As the year draws to a close, what’s on your wish list? At the end of 1908, patients at the Martha Parson Free Hospital for Children received, among other gifts:

 · Sixteen tickets for the circus and automobile rides

 · Ten quarts of oysters

 · A bear on wheels

 · Three sunshine bags

 · Ten pounds of candy

 · A small pig (As a pet? To eat? We’re not sure.)

And finally, “a party for patients, with ice cream, cake and magic lantern pictures.”

Martha Parsons Free Hospital for Children was an early affiliate of St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Records of both hospitals are available at the Becker Medical Library Archives.
