Throwback Thursday…

Shortly after I discovered Adventure Time, my friend Andy, who works on the show, was kind enough to share with me the prompts on the Adventure Time design test. I designed a number of characters based on those prompts, and these ones are a few of the later ones, and probably my favourites. Drawn some time in 2012.

For Christmas this year Meg special ordered me Andy Ristaino’s (@skronked on Twitter) collection of three books - The Babysitter, Escape from Dullsville and Night of the Living Vidiots!

For those who may not know, Andy Ristaino is the lead designer on Adventure Time. I met him at TCAF last year and he was one of the nicest people. Unfortunately I was a bit short on cash at TCAF and couldn’t afford to pick up his incredible work - but luckily Meg was able to order it directly from his online store. You should definitely support this guy, he’s ridiculously talented and the fact that he’s so passionate about his work  really makes it easy to fall in love with his bizarre drawings!

Here’s hoping he’s back at TCAF this year so I can thank him personally!

Molto Bruto - Tschechoslowakei

Austrian art-rockers, known primarily for their four contributions to the 1981 “Die Tödliche Dosis” compilation. But it’s their debut S/T where all the highlights are, however hard it tends to be to track down. Plenty influenced by no wave and Beefheart, it’s a masterwork and probably the best the Schallter label had to offer. Heaps of skronk, manic vocals, synths, and a random assortment of instruments utilized in a minimal, unorthodox manner: cheap-sounding keyboards, tambourines, harmonicas…xylophones? It’s hard to pry everything apart at times. Cohesive chaos. The album seldom does pop up on eBay, usually auctioning at a reasonable price, but it’s nonetheless begging for a reissue.

There is little let up, killer hooks shoe-horned into grimy, proto surf-rock. Singer-songwriter Dean Tzenos’ homage to Albini and other pre-grunge luminaries is utterly exhilarating. A blindingly good debut.” Clash, December 2011 “Big melodies and addictive riffs reminescent of Pixies at their finest… make this your new find of the month.” Cooler, December 2011 Taken from the debut album ‘Hollandaze’ - a grimy, gum-splattered ménage of surf-gaze, punk and lo-fi – ‘Busted Lip’ becomes the latest single from Odonis Odonis on 21st May. ‘Busted Lip’ was actually OO’sdebut ultra-limited edition 7" single on Canadian label We Are Busy Bodies prior to signing to FatCat last year. Originally a solo project for prolific songwriter/ bandleader Dean Tzenos, Odonis Odonis has in the last year also become a formidable live concern. The April dates will be Odonis Odonis’ first in the UK and will be followed by European shows before the band return for the Great Escape (10th-12th May, details tba). Based in Toronto, Odonis Odonis make killer hook-driven tunes that hark back to the classic ‘80s sounds of The Jesus & Mary Chain, Pixies, Big Black and The Cure. Like a good post-modernist, however, these influences colour but do not define Odonis Odonis. Compiled from a wealth of material written and home-recorded between January 2009 and September 2010, Dean recorded virtually all of ‘Hollandaze’ alone in a tiny home studio, writing two or three songs a day - generally starting with drum programming - before adding bass then guitar and vocals, experimenting with a host of different styles.

Do you have any theories on what Commander-in-Chief Kong's power could be?

He’s skronk as hell, probably doesn’t have a devil fruit if I’ll be honest

BUT if he had to have a devil fruit, I’d probably go the obvious route and say he has a gorilla zoan or some kind of paramecia that would make him dumb fuckin strong
