“An obscenely prolific polymath, Dean Tzenos is the non-dead Jay Reatard, the Nathan Williams it’s ok not to punch in the face…” VICE, November 2011
“Skronk-heavy, acid soaked post-punk/ surf-rock hybrids aren’t exactly Canada’s prime export, but it’s a pretty good look on Odonis Odonis… their torrential, evil-grin squall on ‘Hollandaze’ makes for an appealingly physical reaction.” Loud & Quiet, November 2011
“..deliciously brutal; hissing feral guitars and a pulsing drum machine marking out the territory once occupied by Steve Albini’s ferocious Big Black. There is little let up, killer hooks shoe-horned into grimy, proto surf-rock. Singer-songwriter Dean Tzenos’ homage to Albini and other pre-grunge luminaries is utterly exhilarating. A blindingly good debut.” Clash, December 2011
“Big melodies and addictive riffs reminescent of Pixies at their finest… make this your new find of the month.” Cooler, December 2011
Taken from the debut album ‘Hollandaze’ - a grimy, gum-splattered ménage of surf-gaze, punk and lo-fi – ‘Busted Lip’ becomes the latest single from Odonis Odonis on 21st May. ‘Busted Lip’ was actually OO’sdebut ultra-limited edition 7" single on Canadian label We Are Busy Bodies prior to signing to FatCat last year.
Originally a solo project for prolific songwriter/ bandleader Dean Tzenos, Odonis Odonis has in the last year also become a formidable live concern. The April dates will be Odonis Odonis’ first in the UK and will be followed by European shows before the band return for the Great Escape (10th-12th May, details tba).
Based in Toronto, Odonis Odonis make killer hook-driven tunes that hark back to the classic ‘80s sounds of The Jesus & Mary Chain, Pixies, Big Black and The Cure. Like a good post-modernist, however, these influences colour but do not define Odonis Odonis.
Compiled from a wealth of material written and home-recorded between January 2009 and September 2010, Dean recorded virtually all of ‘Hollandaze’ alone in a tiny home studio, writing two or three songs a day - generally starting with drum programming - before adding bass then guitar and vocals, experimenting with a host of different styles.
