Red & Blue Connection Theory

Be warned there’s gonna be Voltron s3 spoilers in here!! So if you don’t want to see that, look elsewhere. (Also this is super fucking long, I’m sorry.)

Anyway so I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, and what with (at least temporary) Red Paladin!Lance being confirmed, now is probably the time to post this.

Coincidentally, I’ve been spending the past couple weeks looking for foreshadow of the Red and Blue Lions have some kind of Special Connection and there is quite a bit, so I thought I’d share some of what I’ve found.

The gist of it is that I think Red and Blue have some kind of connection that the other lions don’t seem to have with each other. Of course all the lions have a special bond, but there seem to be a lot of hints that the connection between Red and Blue *coughs* and their pilots is something a little different––basically, that Lance and Keith have shown a lot more interest in/connection to each other’s lions than any of the other paladins have.

(And before everyone jumps down my throat, I’m NOT proposing a permanent lion switch so jot that down lol. But I do think temporary lion switches are Good so uhhhh fight me.)

I’m not sure how to go about explaining this, but I’m just gonna break it down to:

- Keith’s connection with Blue

- Lance’s connection with Red

- What Does It Mean

Here we go!!!

Keith & Blue

- I’m still caught up on this whole “Keith sensed the Blue Lion” thing. Granted, it could have something to do with his alien abilities™ (I’m still rooting for Keith with Altean ancestry, y’all) but I still question the choice of having Keith sense Blue, of all the lions. He only detects the location of two lions in canon, and they’re––you guessed it––Blue and Red.

First we have some kinda vague “energy” that attracts Keith to Blue:

Then we have this part where Keith just … closes his eyes and senses Red somehow??

(These both happen in the first episode, I might add.)

Like I said, this could be some kinda sixth alien sense. But, I do also wonder if it was Blue trusting & calling out to Keith specifically, which is interesting considering he’s not even her paladin.

- Also in the first episode, when they find Blue, Keith & Lance are the first ones to approach her. Keith even reaches Blue before Lance does!

And then they’re both standing right in front of Blue, side-by-side, when she wakes up.

There is still a close-up on Lance when Blue awakens––but even so, everyone else has much more of a one-on-one first interaction with their lion, so this scene in particular stands out to me.

- Other than in the first episode we don’t get much of Keith interacting with Blue in s1 (except for him saving Blue for Lance in s1e06, which is cute!)

But then there’s also this moment in s2 where he starts asking Coran about whether there might have been Galra on earth before, and whether that could have something to do with Blue being on Earth:

Which is especially interesting now that we know that Keith is part Galra. So …. is it possible the previous Blue Paladin might’ve been Galra?? or even could have been an ancestor of Keith’s?

Then of course we have Lance emerging from his room at the mention of Blue, and accusing Keith of “having his eye on the Blue Lion since day one”:

This is … kinda odd considering Keith hasn’t outwardly shown any desire to pilot Blue as far as I can remember. So, obviously this is a throwback to the very first episode in which Keith first sensed Blue––and the fact that it was brought up again out of nowhere makes me suspicious that there’s Something there that hasn’t quite been addressed yet.

Lance & Red

- *rubs hands together* Now this is Extra Fun because now I know for a fact Lance is gonna fly the Red Lion at some point in s3 because it was in the trailer and all …

:’’))

Unfortunately I don’t get to say “I told you so” because I didn’t publish this post before then, but anyway! I’ve been looking for foreshadow of this and honestly?? If you ask me, there are hints of Red Paladin!Lance since the very first episode. (Again, I’m not suggesting Lance becomes Red Paladin forever, so please don’t kill me. But I do think Lance having some kind of connection with Red has been foreshadowed.)

- So!! In the first episode I noticed that when Allura assigns each of them a lion, she doesn’t technically assign Blue to Lance (because he interrupts her, lol). It’s just kind of assumed that he’s Blue Paladin since, well, he’s flown Blue. Now, I’m not saying he’s not the Blue Paladin––he is! Buuut I also find a couple things about this scene Intriguing:

1) Lance looks like he almost expects to be assigned the lion as Allura describes it (even though he already has a lion), and then seems a bit shocked/upset when it gets assigned to Keith instead.

2) Not only that, but you may notice the Red Lion hovers between BOTH of them, which is noteworthy because this doesn’t happen to anyone else when they get their lion assigned to them. Hmmmmmm…

- This may be an unpopular opinion but I actually … also think Lance shows some Red Paladin traits. Once again, that’s not to say that Lance doesn’t also fit into the role of Blue Paladin because of course he does, but I do think he shows traces of being capable of being Red Paladin as well.

Like listen, when Allura is assigning Red, these are her exact words: “The Red Lion is temperamental and the most difficult to master. … Its pilot needs to be someone who relies more on instincts than skill alone.”

So really the only qualifications here are: 1) Be skilled. 2) Have good instincts.

And Lance?? Fits those qualifications pretty damn well. He’s a skilled pilot, sharpshooter, and strategist. And he has very strong awareness/instincts as well (i.e. being able to identify the Rover clone super fast, being able to come up with a plan on the Balmera on the fly, etc.). There’s no reason why he can’t fly Red if you ask me.

- Also, when the Red Lion gets fire power for the first time Lance is like, “I want that!!” which is interesting … especially because (at least as far as I can remember) no one else expresses jealousy for another paladin’s lion that way.

And generally I just find it kinda funny that Lance accuses Keith of having his eye on the Blue Lion when Lance has like…canonically had his eye on the Red Lion from pretty early on.

- In addition to all of the above, there does seem to be some foreshadow about Keith getting separated from Red (at least temporarily). i.e. he has that dream about Red rejecting him.

And there’s also that vision he has in BoM where Red is far away from him.

(Tag yourself I’m the people screaming.)

Could be coincidental …. or could be intentional to foreshadow something about a certain someone else temporarily taking over as Red Paladin.

- And lastly: it may not mean anything, but in GoLion (the original anime) Isamu/Lance was Red Paladin … So, could be a nod to the original!

And yes, he wore a blue outfit but piloted the Red Lion, don’t question it. Color coordination hadn’t been invented yet.

What Does It Mean?!

- In general, there seems to be a lot of subtle foreshadow that there is Some kind of connection between the Red and Blue lions––or at least, to an extent, Keith and Lance have connections to each other’s lions as well as their own.

- It could mean they are both capable of piloting each other’s lions. I’ll say it again––I’m not suggesting a permanent lion swap or anything along those lines, because both paladins also have very strong connections to their own lions. (Also, I’m not sure about Blue Paladin!Keith at this point, although it’s hard to say since we don’t really know what the quintessence of the Blue Lion is yet.)

However, I think in certain situations their lions could be accepting of the other’s paladin (which of course we know is possible since Keith has piloted Black before, and in the s3 trailer it appears he does so again, as well as Lance piloting Red). So, I feel like that could be important.

- As for the reason behind this connection: It could be because their elements balance each other out (you know, the whole fire-and-ice thing), but what I’m really hoping is that there is some significance in the relationship between the previous Red & Blue Paladins (interpret that however you want––but yeah like, maybe they were good friends??? or …. more than that????) and their lions built up a strong connection because of that (or vice versa).

- TL;DR: I think it’s pretty much inevitable that Red & Blue/Keith & Lance have some kind of special connection (space ranger partners™ amiright) and if you ask me there are a lot of signs pointing in that direction. That’s all, bye.

SU Theory: Why They Came To Earth--Pink Diamond’s Role

I have no idea if this has been said or speculated anywhere else in the fandom, but I was looking at those murals of the Diamonds again, and something struck me. Something big. This starts off bizarre but I promise it ties together smoothly.
-
White Diamond’s mural depicts her with this giant halo behind her head, a large circle with what I think is supposed to be rays of light shining down. In her hands safely rests Homeworld, secure and strong in her possession. Above her are other planets we assume she conquered.

Now on to her sisters, Blue and Yellow Diamonds. They have lots of planets around them but look at their heads.

They have much smaller halos. Why?

Y’know who else has the only other giant halo?

We can deduce that all that fancy stained glass jazz behind them is what they’re wearing; YD’s huge shoulders and skirt/leg cape…thing, BD’s dress and WD’s full on royal robe. So we can assume that everything shown in these murals means something.

Why are White Diamond and Pink Diamond shown as seemingly more important than the other two? Because they are/were.

Why? How? Well…

Peridot shared a very important bit of info; Homeworld is running out of resources. Now because of how the show presented it to us, we have no idea for how long Homeworld’s been in that situation. For all we know, it could have been bleeding out for eons now, they live for such a long time.

By “running out of resources”, consider instead that Peridot meant Homeworld is dying. Considering Peridot came from Homeworld proper and not some colony planet, we know they actively make gems on Homeworld. Safe to say, that’s probably what’s draining it dry. Gemkind is a warring race, they conquer other planets to add to their empire, supposedly so they can make more gems.

Now this may seem like a really stupid question but, I always asked myself, why so many? Managing control over that many colonies on a scale like this would be a nightmare even for them with all their power, even with all of their subjects being loyal. Not to mention what it would take to conquer them in the first place. There had to be a driving reason behind it beyond power lust.

I’ve seen a theory floating around that thinks it’s because the Gems are at war with another, more powerful race. But I don’t think that’s why, Peridot just told us why; her lack of skill, the resources problem;

The kinds of gems they can make depends on the planet, what it’s made of and how much of it there is!

Out of every planet they own within their empire, I’d bet my Nintendo collection Homeworld is the planet not only with the most resources, but with the most varied kinds of resources! And that’s why Era 2 Peridots are weaker, smaller and have a harder time using abilities and skills their era 1 counterparts would have been able to use easily.

They conquer so many planets so they can make all sorts of gems! This may even explain why certain gems are common af and some are rare!

Let’s say they only had one or two planets that could produce Sapphires. I’d be resistant to making too many of them at once too, since gem production destroys planets–and less resources means Gems with less prowess over their powers…

Peridot having a hard time with metalbending is one thing but ehh.. wouldn’t want a Sapphire with faulty Future Vision. Imagine how disastrous that would be. All it took to throw our Sapphire off was a sweet non-conforming Ruby.

And here’s an even bigger bombshell; who’s to say the homeworld Peridot is talking about isn’t the original one?  Maybe Gemkind has had to replace their Homeworld many times. They live forever presumably or until they’re shattered, and even then. I can easily see how one planet alone wouldn’t be nearly enough to keep up with demand.  Blue and Yellow Diamond must have been made somewhere too, anyway.

So that explains the planet-hogging, lets get back down to Earth. Remember the giant halos behind White and Pink Diamond? Yeah, how does any of this relate to those, you ask? Once again, Peri, if you please:

“Resources unique to this world” There it is. Unique enough to make tons of different kinds of gems? Maybe even unique enough to turn the Earth into a New Homeworld?

Yeah, see that sounds like a stretch until I went back and found this.

That’s an Atom. The building block on which all matter is made! Like the matter that makes up the resources they need to produce a full range of gems!! I think Earth Colony wasn’t just a colony. It was going to be a New Homeworld. There are no coincidences in Steven Universe.

We know Blue Diamond was on Earth to fight the rebellion, but maybe she was the original antagonist they had to fight. If Pink Diamond was newly formed when the rebellion started, she’d need someone to guide her. Gems pop out of the ground knowing their place and purpose sure, but this is a Diamond. I have a hard time believing they’d just send a quartz soldier to lead the expedition.

Speaking of the rebellion, that’s another thing. If those planets on the murals are anything to go by, Homeworld has tons of colonies. If the Earth was only going to be a colony, then… here, look at this for a sec.

All of that. For one colony?? Just a colony? Really? No way. This planet was more important to them than that. Either that or the Diamonds are ridiculously psycho.

Finally, lets not forget, a Diamond was made here. That has to hold some significance as they obviously don’t make a new Diamond on every colony they get. Look at Pink Diamond’s pose. The other Diamonds look powerful and in control, she’s bursting from the ground reaching for the Earth, as if she and this planet were some great hope for them.

In Conclusion

That’s why Pink Diamond has the same halo as White Diamond, that’s why they fought so long and hard for the Earth and Pink Diamond; Maybe she was going to be the ruler of a New Homeworld, and our solar system would have become her line of conquered planets.

Now think of Jasper’s unrelenting self-hatred for failing to protect her Diamond, the Cluster, the fused gem experiments and Yellow Diamond’s utter contempt and hate for the Earth. Yikes. Homeworld is fucked up.

Nobody here?

I got permission from everyone involved to send this.

During my very first D&D campaign awhile back the story setting was there were two guard captains that controlled the city, with the evil one controlling the majority of the guards which is why our party was hired by the council of heroes and the good guard captain to mitigate and hopefully stop his influence. The catch was us being hired was a secret until he was brought down. Over the course of the campaign we had several run-ins with the evil captain, and each time he almost killed at least one party member if not more. He actually succeeded in killing two pcs. Throughout the campaign many moronic things happened like the barbarian elf running naked through the streets in an attempt to cause a distraction for the rest of the party and the dragonborn cleric convincing most npcs in the poor districts that he was the second coming of Bahamut because he could use heal spells. By the end of the campaign there was a civil war in the streets of the city with us being trapped in an abandoned shack with the evil captain right outside with a dozen guard-knights threatening to kill a friendly and very helpful to us dwarf npc if we didn’t come out.
Evil Captain: Come on out, or short and stout gets it! I know you’re in there!
My Half-Orc Fighter: Uh…I would like to persuade him to leave? Can I do that?
The DM: Sure. Roll persuasion.
*Rolls Nat 20* Alright what do you say?
Half-Orc: Um…no we’re not!
Evil Captain: If you’re not in there, who’s talking?
Goblin Bard: I would like to persuade him as well.
DM: *sighs* Roll persuasion. *rolls Nat 20 plus 8 points in persuasion* *DM sighs yet again* What do you say?
Goblin Bard: The only person in here is me, your grandmother! And I’m very disappointed in you David! (The evil captains first name)
DM attempts insight check for evil Captain that has an ungodly amount of insight skill points *rolls nat 1* *DM sighs again*
DM: Dave is so distraught he drops his gear and as he walks off you see him taking off his armor as he goes home to rethink his life choices. With no leader the evil guards quickly surrender. Congratulations. *DM sighs*

Ways to Self-Soothe

In addition to the traditional ways to self-soothe, such as taking a bath, reading a book, aromatherapy, and etc, here are some other tips to build your self-soothing skills:

1. Create a calm, loving voice inside of you that is unconditionally accepting. It may help to think of a best friend, a co-worker, your therapist, or even someone you met in passing. Imagine their energy and presence, take it into yourself, and think of what they would say about the situation.

2. Physically hug, rub, or wrap yourself with something comfortable (i.e., a soft blanket).

3. Tell yourself, over and over, “You’re going to be okay,” “You’ve been through worse and survived. You’re living proof you’ll get through this,” or “This too shall pass.”

4. In response to criticism, you can tell yourself, “It’s okay to not be perfect,” “I am good just the way I am,” or “We are all imperfect, and so am I.”

5. Once you feel a little more calm, begin asking yourself what it is you need at this moment. Your needs are important, especially in times of distress. It may be that the little voice inside you says you need to go for a walk, or to hug yourself a little longer, or for you to continue saying comforting words. Whatever it is you need, give yourself that. And if you have trouble hearing your needs, continue to soothe or hug yourself in the midst of your emotions.

6. Remind yourself that everything in life is impermanent. No exceptions. So what you’re going through now will eventually shift and change. Allow yourself to go through the emotions, surfing the waves with the board of your self-compassion. And soon you’ll find yourself somewhere new.
