Set an open course for the virgin sea…

For I’ve got to be free,
Free to face the life that’s ahead of me,
On board I’m the captain, so climb aboard,
We’ll search for tomorrow, on every shore,
And I’ll try, oh lord, I’ll try to carry on,
Maymaynemay Maymaynemay Maymaynemay Maymaynemay,
A gathering of angels appeared above my head,
They sang to us this song of hope,
And this is what they said,
Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me… lads,
Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me

I thought that they were angels, but to my surprise
We climbed about their starship and headed for the skies
Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me… lads
Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me… lads

You suck ass, dude. Seriously. I hate you so much.

Eärendil the Mariner & Elwing the White

The Valar, having listened to Eärendil’s plea, went with a mighty host to Middle-earth, and overthrew Morgoth, and bound him. Eärendil took part in the battle, his ship Vingilótë was blessed by the Valar, and filled with a shining white flame and sent to the skies. He sailed at its helm with the Silmaril bound upon his brow. Alongside Thorondor and the Eagles, Eärendil the Mariner slew the great dragon Ancalagon and cast it down onto Thangorodrim, the event which, along with the sheer devastation caused by the War of Wrath, led to the Ruin of Beleriand.

Eärendil lived on in Valinor and the gleaming of the Silmaril upon his brow could still be seen in the skies of the distant West as the bright Evening Star. Those who remained in Middle-earth called it Gil-Estel (“Star of High Hope”). Elwing was given a tower to live in by the shores of Eldamar, and there she fed seabirds that came to her windows. Eventually she learned their language, and was able to transform into a swan, flying to meet Eärendil whenever he returns from his voyages through the sky.

Sailing the Skies (Open AU starter)

“Captain, we’ve spotted a castaway,” called the lookout through the talk-tubes. “They’ve lit a signal fire off the starboard stern.”

“Right. Hard turn to port! We’re picking them up!” The captain turned the wheel to the left and turned the airship around. The ship pulled up near the deserted floating island, then launched a lifeboat down to it. Inside the boat was a young woman, dressed in greens and blacks. She piloted the boat down to land and waited for the castaway to approach.

Fly Me

You strung words like a kite tail
effortlessly flowing through summer air
where I became your breeze
your north and south

you taught me how to fly
opening my world
and I soared…even higher than you
ever expected

sailing through skies
of good morning’s and goodnight’s
I let you win me over
for love is lighter than air

two birds of a feather
in this together…

Sick day crack babies!
Rinse needed some siblings

These two have equal parts chances of growing up like their chubby mom
And equal parts thin and lanky like both sets of grandparents, though Pine already has a Featherweight-like build.

Sap is entirely too level-headed for this family, and takes his big-brother role seriously. He’s also a bit of an odd duck. Never excitable, and not really into either extreme water sports or food making. However he IS into safety, and leaves early on to apprentice as a forest ranger

Mist is the extreme opposite, never thinking twice about her next move and winds up with plenty of injuries. She and Rinse get along famously. Mist does indeed have an affinity for food, but more with cold air and adventure. She loves sailing, boating, and … skiing. She grows up to be on the mountain patrol.

Pine is oldest, then Rinse, then Mist

Edge of the World (a poem)

Edge of the World

In small ships they launched
into weeks of salty seawater
and cloudless skies
sails snapping in the wind
and hands burning to pull ropes
all for a shortcut to the
Land of Spice and Gold
imagining their return home
rich men no longer sneered at
as only sailors but gentlemen;

when I imagine the courage
it takes to thrust oneself
into the world held only
by the cupped hands of a boat
I wonder who am I
to be afraid to love again
when already the scent of
cinnamon is on the breeze
and my own course is already
