skate thoughts

anonymous asked:

how long does it take to choreograph a program and for skaters to learn them? i was watching anna's rise like a phoenix ex at skate canada and thought the program was created really quickly considering how recent the song was at that time. also some skaters have 5+ programs a season, how do they remember all the choreographies??

Depends on the skater and choreographer, but initial choreo sessions might last 1-2 weeks, give or take. I’ve heard of programs being made in as little as 3 days. It depends on how much time the skater and choreographer spend together every day; choreographers sometimes have many appointments with skaters at once. Skaters often tweak parts of their choreo throughout a season, as well. As for how long it takes to learn a program, that also depends on the skater. Some are faster than others but most skaters probably need a month or two to settle into their competitive programs, and obviously they become more comfortable as the season goes on. Anna would’ve had plenty of time to choreograph and learn her exhibition, given that the song came out months before she performed it. Skaters with lots of programs just…practice them a lot. Most exhibitions don’t have very complex choreo, anyway.

A messy little comic where Otabek calls it out.

Part 6/Part 8

It only gets happier from here, I promise. Next part coming out next week 👍🏾

In the Kiss & Cry area, you could hear Yuzu talking with Brian and Tracy. Brian talked about how this time the presentation wasn’t as passionate (interestingly I agree) as it has been in the past. But he still did it. Yuzuru skated H&L cleanly for the first time and broke a WR in the process. I almost cried when he said “I worked so hard.”…it paid off man. Who knows what mental torment and regret he’s subjected himself to in private, out of the media’s eyes. It’s much harder to assure yourself of your confidence than it is to convince others. But Yuzuru has always and will always be an exceptional person, and to that extent, a legendary skater.

Today I witnessed the breaking of a World Record, a beautiful clean skate, and the fruitful labor of a hardworking skater. It was everything and more than I could’ve asked for.

Otabeks cheeky friends in Almaty Headcanons!!

- amongst all his posters of famous Musicians and DJs and festival promos there’s at LEAST two or three glossy creaseless fullbody shots of the beautiful soldier eyed Yuri Plisetsky (his friends may or may not have bought for his birthday as a joke, but secretly knowing he’d love them and he does)

-when his cheeky friends in Almaty found out that Beka was finally going to be in the same competition bracket as his (exclusively) highly spoken of (super) crush, the (loving? friendly?) brutally teasing banter (kissy noises, heart eye emojis, birds and bees and protection talks) didn’t stop until Otabek was safely through airport customs.

-when he turns his phone back on after landing, however, theres a hundred new messages and a photoshop edit of Bekas face over a water bottle Plisetsky is drinking from with the caption “this could be you”

- when the candid snapshots of one Russian Ice Fairy straddling the motorcycle backseat of one Kazakh Hero spread across the internet like the sleet of a Siberian mid-winter blizzard, Otabeks friends absolutely lose it.

-every single social outlet of Otabeks (although few) blows up mental. His phone, his friends group chat, hundreds and hundreds of caps locked screaming, heart eyes, tongue winky faces, “FINALLY"s and various funny edits of the leaked photographs and the support makes Beka chuckle quietly, completely red faced, happy.

-Otabeks friends go over to the Altins home for a viewing party of the Grand Prix Final.

-like they do for every big competition. They’re always so proud of him (some of them say so some of them don’t but he knows they all are)

-although understandably upset for Beka, cannot help but continue to tease him about how his “boyfriend not only stole your gold, but ours as well ;)”

-they all go out for drinks when Otabek returns to Almaty, and force him to spill every detail about what happened between him and the Russian Tiger.

-when they hear he’s going back to visit St Petersburg in the new year, the group is almost thrown out of the bar for the raucous uproar that explodes between them.

AU of sorts where Chris walks up to Yuuri after the Sochi Short Program and is like "My friend thinks you're really cute and was pretty impressed by your skating today, but he thought it would be weird to just walk up and hit on you, so I'm doing it for him. Can I get your number?" Viktor, who is dying somewhere across the room, can't decide if Chris is the worst friend ever or the best.

omg victor’s probably like:

yuzuru hanyu + light shots || the last swan, world team trophy 2017

3 moments that made me cry during the last Hope and Legacy:

  1. This little arm movement completely in time with the music that I have loved all season and imo it was the most beautiful this last time
  2. The blasted 4S+3T that made him fall painfully so many times, holds no power over him now
  3. God I don’t even know how to describe this emergency combo. I lost about 5 years and a hundred hairs off my head. Was killed and resurrected but happily so

Thank you Yuzuru for ending the season in such an unforgettable way ❤️

Yuri on Ice interview translation - PASH! 2017/05 (p24-25)

I am pleased to bring you the very first interview with director Sayo Yamamoto!!! You don’t know how much I’ve been waiting for this… This one is pretty general because of course she has never been interviewed before so they are asking her the basics, but it’s very interesting to finally hear things from her perspective too, since she’s the one who started it all. More interviews with her will be appearing in other magazines in the near future, I’m looking forward to those ones too.

Also, I believe a bright future is to be expected for Yuri on Ice, since she seems to have lots of plans…!! (I was shivering typing out the translation, lol)

Translation is under the cut.

Interview (first appearance in media!)
The world of “Yuri on Ice” that director Yamamoto wanted to create
With 8 notebooks full of notes in one hand, director Sayo Yamamoto has answered our interview for the first time. We have asked her how this new animation that no one had ever seen before was born.

In preparation for Welcome to the Madness
  • Yurio *mumbling*: Can you help me with my makeup?
  • Georgi: Huh?
  • Yurio *scowling and mumbling a little louder*: Can you help me with my makeup?
  • Georgi: What? You need to speak up, Yuri.
  • Georgi: Well now you've gone and hurt my feelings. I don't think I want to help you anymore.
  • Yurio: Fine! I'll just ask Mila--
  • Georgi: No wait, come back! I'll do it! She doesn't know the first thing about eyeliner!
Things I need to happen (to men) at Worlds in Hel(l)sinki 2017

1. Yuzuru Hanyu winning the World Title again (with deserving performances please)
2. The Wedding Pose ritual on the podium
3. Shoma Uno and Yuzuru Hanyu on the podium because otherwise 2. won’t be possible
4. Yuzuvier-Bromance-moments, being it at practice sessions, on the podium, at the gala or all three
5. Respect for all skaters by all fans AFTER the competition (because hate towards skaters is just meeeeh)
6. A great Gala with group coreography, funny skaters and much dorkiness
7. Yuzuru Hanyu being able to skate clean and smile like a ray of sunshine
8. No case of annoyingly obvious overscoring (is that possible?)

9. In a perfect world, I want a repeat of GPF2015 podium (so no one will forget uncle Javi again)

10. Nathan Chen still being a quad machine because if all of the above still comes true despite this, that just means everyone went absolutely wild with the jumps out there on the ice.
11. Yuzuru Hanyu’s clean skate extends to the gala because his exhibition program is absolutely divine.

12. To watch the live stream without it cutting out at CRUCIAL MOMENTS

13. No Shoma in tears like last year, because my heart could not survive another heartbreak like this again!
14. For every skater a satisfying performance, no debakel with lots of falls!

15. Shoma being able to skate clean and finishing with a smile :3

16.  lots of cute or funny interaction between skaters

We’ve quite a list now! I totally agree! Come one, at least some points should happen, okay?

Feel free to expand this list. Any wishes for Worlds?

Just some old rollerboyf doodles before bed I guess. I don’t think I ever posted these here, so

there’s a good reason these tables are numbered honey, you just haven’t thought of it yet // panic! at the disco

Watching Yuna Kim at Sochi, gave me an idea, not far from a similar feeling we all had in last Worlds in Helsinki.
Yuzuru Hanyu will only win his second olympic Gold if he skates the lights out of the arena and drags that fucking medal out of those judges’ hands. It will be the most underscored olympic gold that ever existed.

First, there’s this general feeling that he’s too good to be true. And I get that, because I’m a scientist, so scepticism is my base state and “pics or it didn’t happen” is like my motto. XD
But yes, sometimes people ARE really that good. I’m not sure we’ll see another in a very long time, but he trully is the unicorn of figure skating and I thank God his parents gave birth to him. :)

So human nature is to turn the reactions around and go from fawning to hardcore critics. Fair enough.

The only sad thing is to imagine in a couple of years when you look back at Yuzuru’s skates and to see how harshly and unfairly they were judged for their artistry, technicality and beauty. For the way they pushed the sport forward. For their place in history (even the flawed ones).

So please judges, don’t deny a skater their due because someday one day somebody might/will be better and you have to save the scores for them. If somebody deserves a 10 now, give it to them NOW. Like Massimo says, someday you have to have the courage to put the 10 on the table.
