skate evening

Another Story From Mom...

When my mom was in high school, she wasn’t popular or anything. Anyways.

So a group of kids decided they wanted to go ice skating but they couldn’t get a ride, so these kids told my mom that if she could get them all a ride to the skating rink, she could come too.

Well she asked her dad, and he said that they could go and they piled all these kids into the car and they headed off to the skating rink and my mom was telling my grandpa how he didn’t have to wait around for them to be done and that the session was over in about three hours or so.

But nah

He was just: “Actually, I think I’ll try skating, I should really try to learn.”

So my mom was horrified, her dad was going to be trying to learn how to ice skate and embarrass her in front of everyone. The guys thought it was funny to get to see an old man fall on his ass all night so they were all for it.

Well my mom and a couple other girls didn’t terribly know how to skate either so they edged around the side of the rink and my grandpa was right with them, inching along.

Well one of the guys thought it would be funny to slide toward the girls and kick ice up at them and my grandpa told him that wasn’t an approrpiate way to treat the girls and told him to stop it.

Little bastard said something flippant my mom can’t remember but she summarized it as essentially being ‘kiss my ass’ and skated off.

My grandpa looked at my mom and the rest of the girls, and told them to never, ever let anybody, let alone boys treat them like that and like that he was GONE.

See

thing my mom and none of these kids knew was that my grandpa knew how to ice skate, actually. The man was the star player on his highschool hockey team.

He skated right up to the boy and stopped abruptly, which ended up causing the boy to fall on his ass and told him to never, ever treat anyone like that ever again, and had him go over and apologize to my mom and the other girls for his horrible behavior. Of course he then spent the rest of the evening skating backwards and sideways and doing fancy maneuvering around the rink, as the jig was up.

But later, my mom realized that he stayed at the rink and pretended he couldn’t skate because he didn’t trust the other kids to behave themselves and wanted to be there to protect his daughter. So he spent all that time barely inching along, wobbling and pretending to struggle so he could stay with my mom and make sure she was going to be treated alright by the popular kids.

Kingdom Hearts…. Ice Skating.

KINGDOM HEARTS ICE SKATING!!!

KINGDOM HEARTS ICE SKATING!!!!!!!!

KINGDOM HEARTS ICE SKATING!!!!!!!!!!!

what makes the Welcome to the Madness exhibition skate even funnier is that on ONE HAND we have a pair like Viktor and Yuuri:

looking at each other in pure love and admiration

doing romantic lifts

sensually caressing each other’s faces

AND ON THE OTHER HAND WE HAVE YURIO AND OTABEK PERFORMING TOGETHER

WHO JUST

FINGER GUNS

I wanna talk about Viktor’s room at the Katsukis’ Onsen.

A room says a lot about you. I mean, just look at Yuuri’s room. We are made to understand right from the start who he is.

Yuuri’s room was designed to really hammer the point across that he’s the biggest Nikiforov fan out there. And let’s be honest, although we learn a lot about who Yuuri is, from his anxiety to his competitiveness, his developing relationship with Viktor is the heart of Yuri!!! On Ice.

Viktor has moved into his new room temporarily but he’s pretty damn extra and brought everything with him so there’s a lot in there to look at.

So essentially this is Viktor’s room. It’s pretty self-explanatory for the most part. We’ve got the lamps he clearly likes as we see them in his Russian apartment in ep 1. Matryoshka dolls, because he Russian duh, giant bed to share with Makka, books to read. Then there’s a large artsy painting of a woman and a, no doubt heavy af, stone sculpture. These two things show that Viktor’s got money, that he’s classy, and that he’s extra. All pretty straightforward.

So what really interests me about Viktor’s room is the photo frame. More specifically, the frame that holds a picture of himself

Unlike painting and posters, photo frames are far more personal.

Yuuri has posters of his idol, okay yes there are a lot, but it’s still pretty regular behaviour. But something that I, and many others from what I’ve seen, found super endearing was that he had multiple framed photos of Viktor. That’s far more personal, and it really hinted at Yuuri’s stronger feelings.

So then we have Viktor’s room, and the only photo frame he brings with him holds a picture of himself.

At first, I thought damn isn’t that arrogant? So conceited, it’s actually a bit cringe even.

But then, this is Viktor. Yes he’s a legend, yes he knows it, but he’s never truly flaunted it. That doesn’t seem very in character to present him this way.

I wondered if maybe it was Yuuri who put it in there. After all, Yuuri clearly had the same poster–

– which we saw him take down from his room.

But then, that seems unlikely. That would defy the point of hiding the posters in the first place! Plus, look at Viktor moving in.

The room is completely bare, there wasn’t anything in there. Everything came from Viktor’s boxes. The frame had to have been his.

So, thinking of what I know of Viktor, one of the things that stands out the most about him was that skating was his everything. No life and love as he much later explained, but that was fair to assume even in ep 1, given that he was a legend. The sport clearly took up a lot of time!

If someone wanted to frame a picture, what would they pick? A picture of their family? A shot of them with their friends? A cute pic of them and their dog? It would be a picture close to them, something or someone that matters. And what does Viktor have?

A picture of himself skating.

Because his whole life has been his skating career, he pretty much knows nothing else. He even admitted that he rarely got to spend time with Makkachin before.

Looking at it that way, the picture is suddenly really sad.

When you move to another country, you’d want a reminder of the people you love, of home. Viktor brings a reminder of skating because it’s all he’s known, and it’s the thing he’s going to miss most

Because, think about it. He skates and skates and skates, and now it stops. He knows that choosing to be a coach means putting skating aside. His skating is framed there on his table, because it’s like looking at a missed loved one for him.

But this is actually really beautiful. Because, throughout the entire series, we don’t really see a Viktor who mourns the fact that he’s not practicing a routine for himself. Yuuri doesn’t catch him skating by himself thoughtfully, missing having the ice all to himself. Not once do we see that on their journey! Viktor is completely engrossed in coaching Yuuri, and now he only skates to teach him. His devotion is so genuine. I  knew that Viktor loved Yuuri to have put everything on hold like that for him, but I didn’t know it like this.

I really want to see Victor’s photo frame in season 2. My money’s on Yuuri being in that picture.

4 types of clapping demonstrated by Figure Skaters

Okay, here we go:

  1. The “That was awesome!”-type. Usually used when feeling a great amount of joy and amazement.

       2.  The “You rock! Keep going!”-type. Often seen when people feel the              urge to cheer on performers they’d like to continue performing and/or                as a sign of support.

      3. The “I’ve no idea what I’m doing but I don’t want to be rude”-type.            Executed when a person did miss the reason for cheering but still desires          to be polite.

      4. … and then there is Yuzuru Hanyu

soooo….competitive figure skating Voltron AU? (there’ll be more to come w Shatt, Pidge/Shiro as a duo, coach Allura and PT Hunk! :D)

Almost all of these poses are ref’d from routines of Yuzuru Hanyuu! He’s got such a beautiful style of figure skating, with lots of flair and flamboyance, it felt really fitting for these two ^-^

Figure Skating AU in which Kylo Ren, a skater with a lot of promise but not nearly enough discipline, is taken under the wing of Armitage Hux, two time Grand Prix Gold Medalist and a young Ben Solo’s idol. Kylo quickly leaps at the chance to learn from someone such as Hux, not realising that his childhood hero is a far pricklier personality than he’d initially expected. What is initially a tense relationship quickly morphs into something far richer as both realise they have a lot to learn from each other, and, spoilers, Feelings™ happen.

I have been sitting on these for an age, as you can tell by the fact that my signature changed, but I really wanted to get these out as a set. Enjoy!

Edit: someone please explain to me how to upload images where the preview pic isn’t blurry as all heck. *cries*

roller gal giorno!

Someone give me seventeen-year-old Yakov Feltsman at the 1964 Olympics wearing bell-bottoms and a peasant shirt with a scarf around his head, hair cut into a moptop and skating to The Twist. He landed the first triple flip in competition and, in an interview, announced that his inspiration was the most beautiful girl he’d ever met, his girlfriend of three weeks Lilia Baranovskaya.

Yakov’s coach is banging his head against a wall somewhere just off camera.

Forty years later and Viktor Nikiforov, he of the fae-like looks and waist-length silver hair, wants to wear a bondage costume on the ice and Yakov can’t even tell him not to because when he tries Viktor starts screaming “COME ON BABY LET’S DO THE TWIST” and Yakov is immediately paralyzed with shame.

“I mean, really, you have no room to talk,” Lilia tells him, examining her nails as Viktor announces that he’s engaged to a skater he’s barely known for eight months. Who he’s still actively coaching.

Yuri shows up in his exhibition skate outfit and doesn’t even wait for Yakov to open his mouth before he’s holding up a picture–an actual printed picture where did he find it–in full color of Yakov on the podium at the 1964 Olympics.

“Bell bottoms, old man?” he says, flipping his hair as he skates onto the ice.

(Lilia frames the picture. It hangs in her office underneath a laminated poster reading “Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it”)

On May 26, 2017, Yuzuru Hanyu revealed his short program for the Olympic season at the first show of Fantasy on Ice (Makuhari). He will skate to Frederic Chopin’s Ballade no.1 again for the third season, debuting a different jump layout of 4lo, 3a, and a second half 4t-3t combination. (x
