sinister forces

  • What she says: I'm fine
  • What she means: The Iron Giant is such a vastly overlooked cartoon classic which didn't get nearly enough recognition despite its originality and its approach to mature topics in a way that was accessible to a young audience. From the way Brad Bird handled the villain, a man driven mad by the paranoia inflicted on him by government propaganda, to his clear and unflinching anti-war message, The Iron Giant encouraged children to question authority and be suspicious of the media we are spoon fed, and I will always wonder whether there were more sinister forces at work which kept the film from reaching a wider audience. Also, I am so thirsty for Dean McCoppin, it is embarrassing.

Here’s the thing for me. About those scenes with Merle and “John.”

At the start, I couldn’t help but feel a little annoyed that Clint wasn’t asking different questions. Travis clearly had the same thoughts I did–tactically, Merle was playing it poorly. He gave more information than he needed and asked vague questions that didn’t yield practical intel on how to fight the Hunger.

If it had been Taako, he’d have asked clever questions and been focused on getting info out of the Hunger, on besting it. If it had been Magnus, he would have straight up asked, “how do we kill you” and likely learned at least something from that. But this wasn’t Taako’s or Magnus’s role to play.

Merle was approaching parley the way it was meant to be approached. Not as a warrior looking for a way to kill the Hunger, but as a diplomat trying to understand it. He approached it with an open mind. To the point where he was eventually able to ask “are you my friend?”

He asked that of this nightmare entity, this thing that’s caused so much death and suffering–that’s killed him dozens of times. Maybe he’s just that able to open his heart. Or maybe despite the religious ideals he tries to project as a cleric, he’s someone who–whether the person in question is a human, or a god, or a sinister consuming force—just wants people to like him.

Whatever the reason, he was able to look at the Hunger and try to reason with it. To talk to it earnestly about the value of life, and hope.

It didn’t listen. And when it didn’t listen, I actually believe Merle was disappointed. That for a moment he had hoped the Hunger could be better. Instead, he told the Hunger off, and said he didn’t want to see him anymore.

And the Hunger is sad. For the first time in who even can guess how long, the Hunger feels sorrow, and regret. Because for a moment he had a friend, and then he lost that friend. Because of his own actions.

Merle didn’t learn how to kill the Hunger, he didn’t learn any information that could help them slow it down or get to the Light of Creation faster. But what he did hurt it more than any weapon ever could.

↳ “Nobody here but the FBI’s most unwanted.”

Jyn “Spooky” Erso is a talented FBI profiler and agent. Obsessed with the disappearance of her father, Galen, she at first believes that he was abducted by aliens, but she comes to realize that there is a more sinister force at work, and that he may have been taken by a shadow syndicate known as “The Empire.”

Because of Jyn’s belief in the supernatural–in the existence of “little green men”–she is a pariah among her colleagues, a walking joke. Despite her talents, she is shunted away to a little-known department in the basement of the FBI building that deals in strange, unsolved cases: The X-Files.

Enter Agent Cassian Andor. Assigned by Assistant Director Draven to work with Erso, Andor is a medical doctor, and more important, a skeptic. Sent to oversee her work and report back to Draven, he is also there as a logical and cool counterpoint to her speculative and reckless behavior. They butt heads at first, but over time, Andor finds it harder and harder to provide scientific explanation for the things he sees, even if he is able to debunk Erso’s original, unconventional theories. He eventually becomes a reluctant believer.

Though they begin their partnership in conflict, their relationship evolves, from contention to cooperation, from distrust to a deep faith in one another, and from friendship to a love that cannot be explained by logic or pragmatism.

Kati Kati(2016) directed by Mbithi Masya

“Bereft of earthly memories, a new arrival in the afterlife struggles to recover the past, in this poetic fantasy that offers a dark reflection on personal atonement in the shadow of Kenya’s violent past

Imagine waking up one day in a barren wasteland. Amnesia leaves you clueless as to your whereabouts, your identity, and how you arrived. A small group of strangers welcomes you to a nearby oasis resort, and they reveal to you the nature of this new reality. You are dead. And this is the afterlife. This is what happens to Kaleche (Nyokabi Gethaiga) in the enigmatic opening sequence of Kati Kati, writer-director Mbithi Masya’s poetic first feature film.

Kaleche is a new arrival with no recollection of her life or death. A dozen other young Kenyans are all caught in the same eerie dormant state. They want for nothing; they simply write down whatever their heart desires and it appears at their bedside the next morning.

The group’s unofficial leader is Thoma (Elsaphan Njora), who is passionate about helping the dead remember and reconcile with their fragmented pasts. But Kaleche’s presence triggers a transformation in Thoma. Their mutual enchantment with each other unearths a sinister secret of his, forcing him to confront his own denial and pain.

Masya is one third of the alternative house-funk trio Just a Band, and his musical background clearly informs the film’s lyrical rhythms — to say nothing of the way the script by Masya and co-writer Mugambi Nthiga crescendoes to a climax. With echoes of Wings of Desire and After Life, Kati Kati offers a dark reflection on personal atonement in the shadow of Kenya’s past.”

“But it did just happen. It happened to me.” A large grin drew across his face. “I was chosen, Hunk! To fight crime!”

Six people, one destiny. After a freak accident at the Future of Science Museum, six unlikely individuals end up with powers beyond their wild imaginations. These powers are not without struggles, and as the six do battle with themselves, and with each other, sinister forces make themselves known. Barely controlled and barely a team, they are forced to turn their attention outward as a group known only as the Galra use their abilities for evil. As Team Voltron gears up for battle, one question remains on their lips: just how many people were affected that day, and why, of all people, were they the ones chosen?

Every day, every hour, turn that pain into power.

Some more WitchMercy and OniGenji perhaps? You did one a while back that I really enjoyed.

Its a really interesting dynamics. Here’s a new little spin on the two

  • Being strong, means getting strong attachments to the sinister forces that lurk near the shadows and at nightfall. Witch’s powers aren’t natural, never based off of anything good or lovely. If one wants witchcraft and curses, one has to summon a demon.
  • And so she did, needing more strength to continue her dark arts. The spell was easy enough, the chant a little less so, but she did it. Summoning a dark spirit, the mighty demon stood before her, trapped until it allowed her to draw its power.
  • Genji, he called himself, and The Witch made him her familiar. Tying her own soul to the dark creature. With a body of shadow and a mask of red horns and fangs. They vanished into the night, side by side.
  • Having her own life energy tied to the demon, they share life force, empowering the other. The demon is quick and powerful in the night, helping her enchant poor souls to her bidding. She keeps him safe and sound by her side, and soon finds him more to be an agent of chaos.
  • He is clever, and she finds him beautiful in every way. Already bound so close together, she feels the stirrings inside of him. Strange and foreign, but protective over her for reasons beside their ties.
  • Some say, that the only way to get rid of the Witch that lies deep in the forest, is to kill the strange man at her side. That if someone where to end her lover, she’d die of heartbreak. Fade away back to the darkness that she is rumored to have come from.
  • There is truth in rumors and lies. Though no one could ever get close enough to truly find out, for the Witch’s spells are powerful, and her demon is quick.

Long ago, the gods of the upper planes abandoned the world below to the sinister forces that besieged it - demons and devils, clockwork armies, cruel archfey, legions of undead, cosmic horrors from beyond the stars. The gods that the civilizations of present day know and worship are actually ancient constructs created by a mighty alchemist, each designed as a living weapon of unimaginable power, each designed to stand against a different otherworldly foe and each powered by the world’s refusal to submit.

Got another one for ya (I really enjoy your blog btw!) An imagine for each of the team RWBY girls where they find out their S/O is trying to escape the life of an assassin. Not just a killer who got bored an wants out, more like they were taken off the streets and trained to kill in order to survive, and now that they're older they want to use their skills to help people as a Hunter. Maybe a bit about the S/O agonizing about potentially having to fight their former 'family.'

ooo, I adore assassin characters

  • “You used to… kill people…”
  • You’ve seen a lot of terrible things, but nothing has broken your heart quite like the frightened look in your girl friend’s eyes.
  • You’re quick to rush forward, the words explaining your actions spilling out of your mouth.
  • Something about the way you stutter and trip over your words in an attempt to explain yourself calms her down.
  • If you were nothing but a cold killer, you wouldn’t bother, right? You’d have more composure than this.
  • She tells you to slow down, and she listens.
  • She feels terrible about getting so scared when she learns how you were captured and forced into that life.
  • ‘-and now I guess i’m just trying to make up for everything by becoming a hunter.’
  • You look at your feet, unable to meet her eyes, then you hear foot steps and suddenly you’re being held tightly.
  • You ear her mumble into your shoulder, “I’m sorry, I had no idea.”
  • ‘how… how can you even stand to be near me, knowing that I…. knowing what i’ve done?’
  • “It… shocked me, but look at yourself.” Ruby steps back to look you in the eye “You said it yourself, you’re trying to make up for it by protecting people. That speaks volumes about what kind of person you really are. Besides, it wasn’t your choice, you were forced into the job.”
  • ‘I know… what kills me is there were so many kids like me that I couldn’t help. They’re out there, practically brain washed into obedience. Ever since I left i’ve been afraid that one of them would be sent to kill me. I don’t know if I could bring myself to fight them.’
  • “If that ever happens, you know i’ll have your back, no matter what.”
  • It does weird her out from time to time, if it’s really talked about, but she never stops being supportive.

  • She’s instantly on guard.
  • ‘Weiss, listen to me.’
  • “How do… I want to to trust you, but how do I know I can anymore?”
  • ‘Please, you know me, Weiss.’
  • “All I know is that apparently everything you’ve told me about your life before becoming a hunter was a lie.”
  • ‘Just- just let me explain. Please.’
  • She takes a deep breath “Go on.”
  • You explain everything about your upbringing, how you were brought in as a child and trained to kill, all the way to your escape and your enrollment at the academy.
  • ‘I figured the academy could offer some safety should they send another assassin after me, but… more than that, I thought I could start to repent for what i’ve done by using my abilities to help people.’
  • Weiss nods as you finish your story. Slowly, she apologizes if she reacted a bit to harshly, she explains she’s had to be wary of would be assassins, being the heiress to such a large, powerful company, hearing reports of people with the company taken out by the white fang.
  • “You should have told me sooner”
  • ‘I know, i’m sorry. I just didn’t want you to hate me.’
  • “Hm, well, this will take some time to process, but I don’t hate you.”
  • ‘Y-you don’t?’
  • “No, I don’t. You’ve given up that life, you understand it was wrong and made the choice to leave. So long as you keep working to improve yourself as a protector of life, then you’re fine.”
  • ‘Thank you.’
  • She nods “Just, I think I need some time to process this, but if anything tears us apart, I don’t think it will be this.”

  • “So, let me get this straight, you were taken in by an assassin organization when you were young, and they trained and conditioned you to become a killer, and only recently you realized how wrong it all was.”
  • ‘That’s the gist of it, yeah.’
  • She’ll sit down for a while, and she won’t say anything for so long you start to get worried.
  • ‘Blake-’
  • “You said you left it all behind, right?”
  • You’re to caught off guard to say anything right away.
  • Blake looks you straight in the eye “You are no longer affiliated with those assassins, right? You have no plans of going back?”
  • ‘Of course. Even if I wanted to, i’m pretty sure any of the people I called ‘friends’ ave orders to kill me.’
  • “And… you regret all the bad things you did?”
  • ‘Yes, i’ll carry the guilt for the rest of my life.’
  • She’ll nod and stand. She explains she knows what it’s like, to be part of something and think you’re doing the right thing, only to realize you’re aiding something sinister and be forced to run from everything you knew.
  • “I guess we have more in common than we thought, huh. We both have a lot to make up for, we both have done things we’ll always regret, and I don’t think either of us will ever stop trying to make up for it. That’s wy we came to the academy in the first place.”
  • She’ll put a hand on your shoulder “Thank you for telling me. I know what it’s like to carry that weight. If i’m going to have any one next to me on this road to redemption, i’m glad it’s you.”

  • “No way, you’re joking right?”
  • ‘No, i’m not. Yang please, I can explain-’
  • “Why?! Tell me it wasn’t your choice, (y/n)!”
  • ‘It wasn’t! It wasn’t, I swear, I swear I was forced. Wen I was just a child… they found me and took me in. They were my family, Yang, I did whatever they told me, they saved my life after all. I thought I was doing good, but I realize now I was just a blind idiot.’
  • She’ll go quiet and pace around the room.
  • ‘Yang, please don’t be mad.’
  • “I’m not mad, this is just… a lot to take in.”
  • After another moment “You’ve really turned your back on them?”
  • Relief that she’s listening and not trying to beat you up floods through you ‘Yes. I haven’t seen any of them since I left. Except one… but it wasn’t to bring me back! She was sent to kill me, I barely got away alive.’
  • She’ll process this “Okay, okay, i’m dating an ex assassin, that’s… okay, um, at least you told me.”
  • ‘I understand if you want to break up. I swear, you’ll never have to see me again.’
  • “What about your quest for redemption at the school?”
  • ‘I’d… enroll at one of the other academies, I guess.’
  • She’ll shake her head “Nah, I won’t make you do that.”
  • ‘So, you don’t want to break up?’
  • “This is some pretty big news, and i’m not going to lie, it’s a little unsettling. Ha, I guess I finally know where you got your fighting style from. Call me crazy, (Y/n), but I can’t bring myself to break up with you. I can see how sincere you are, and I can tell you regret it. You did some pretty bad stuff to survive, but like you said, it wasn’t your choice. I think you can redeem yourself, and… i’m proud to be with someone who has dedicated them self so fully to becoming a hunter and fixing their mistakes.”

So…I attempted to write a somewhat serious beginning of the Plotdale Movie idea where Robert decides to try and escape the Plot. Worth continuing?

Robert knew, even before the wedding he knew. If he really thought about it, he should have always known it would happen, but that didn’t make it sting any less. It was a Sunday, late at night, long after Aaron had gone to bed, tired from an exhausting day plagued with thoughts of going to prison all because he had punched some largely irrelevant person they would likely never see again. All of it was his fault, he knew that’s how it was being portrayed, and he felt awful about it. He couldn’t understand why he kept going back to Rebecca no matter how many times he made it clear to her that he was using her, that he wanted nothing to do with her. Even more strange was the notion that she still thought she had a chance with him despite the agreement they had come to, to just be friends after she had inserted herself into a discussion with Aaron about what Gordon had done to him and convinced him to buy the Mill. He was coming to understand that a lot didn’t add up where Rebecca was concerned. If only he had remembered that he had a load of money from his divorce with Chrissie, he could have helped Aaron buy the house instead. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be.

Propped up against both pillows and headboard on the bed, he had been thumbing through his phone with one hand, while occupying the other running his fingers through Aaron’s gel free hair. It was quiet moments like these, after the drama of the day or week that he liked the best. These were the times he was allowed to be his best self. A text had popped up on his phone from one of his contacts. Clive had been gifted to him when he had needed to sort out revenge on Adam after he had cheated on Victoria, but he had long since learned to cultivate those relationships for his own uses. Clive had come through for him on a number of occasions and he trusted him.

From Clive:

I have a source that says you’re going to betray Aaron in the coming weeks.

Like a Cruel Mistress Woos (WIP) by Salvia_G

Steve has struggled with the modern world since he woke up, and mostly he and it have called it a draw. When the Winter Soldier comes in from the cold, asking for help in recovering his identity as James Buchanan Barnes, Steve is thrilled. Finally, he’s going to have a friend and ally who understands what it’s like. He’s getting Bucky back, and he couldn’t be happier.

But six months later, James is well enough to be living in Avenger Tower, making moves on Natasha Romanov, occasionally fighting the forces of evil alongside the Avengers, and adapting to modern life like he was born in 1987 instead of 1917.

And he wants nothing to do with Steve.

Maybe it’s time to figure out what Steve wants if he doesn’t have Bucky. What he can live with. What’s not worth living without.

Featuring a confused and questioning Steve Rogers, a Tony Stark with a daddy complex, a Bucky Barnes whose mouth needs to be washed out with soap, a Natasha Romanov who likes her cars fast and her boys bad, and a handful of OMCs with designs on Steve. But I promise you’ll come to love them just as much as Steve does. Most of them.

after me comes the flood by kafkian

‘Do you think they’ll accept me?’ Steve had asked doubtfully, staring down at the flier. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! it bleated at him in sour Hulk green, which he thought demonstrated a serious lack of tact considering it was an advertisement calling for people to work with kids left with PTSD after the Avengers levelled half their home city. 'I mean. I’m the one who caused half the mess.’

'While defending the earth from aliens,’ Natasha pointed out.

In which Steve joins a support group, realizes rebuilding New York isn’t just a one-man job, and tries to figure out what the hell is going on between him and Bucky.

Five times Bucky turned somebody on without realising or even planning to do it. And: One time he finally noticed. From Steve to women, from Steve again to German scientists and back to Steve, because Steve is the only one that really counts.

Safe Harbour (WIP) by Escapologist

After a dramatic incident in his late teens, Steve Buchanan ends up miles away from Brooklyn, working for global aid agency Shield International in London. He tries to lose himself in work to forget about everything he left behind, but ten years later he still hasn’t moved on very far, and he might even be starting to crack.

Sinister forces are gathering on the horizon, but Steve’s always game for a fight: ultimately, though, all he wants is to make the world a better place, and see Bucky Barnes again. In reverse order.

Featuring sexy aid worker Steve, real person Natasha, British Sam (WHAT) and sad sexy photographer Bucky. Oh my God I love them all.

Politics is such as sinister force because it is moved by an alienation and lack rooted in society’s foundations. To remedy this ennui, individuals turn to politics to discover some universal truth to struggle for— a comfortable abstraction to fill the void in their experience. This is a paradox, of course, as this alienation is intrinsic to capitalist society, and politics can only ever reproduce that society, and therefore its concomitant misery. The fantasy of politics promises to suture one’s empty subjectivity to some abstraction outside of oneself in an attempt to find some meaning, to situation oneself within history, to really do something. Like a form of performance art, politics acts as a great representation of resistance to society, yet as mere representation remains inseparable from the symbolic order. The reality of politics is that it offers nothing; a nothingness that corresponds to the meaninglessness of social life.
