Singing Honeyeaters

Former Deakin PhD student, Emma Carlos, worked hard at capturing Singing Honeyeaters as part of her study looking at how native wildlife use weeds (in this case, Boxthorn at a coastal wetland). Catching these birds was not easy, Emma used paper mache models (top) and play back, to lure birds into mist nets. The habitat here is very open, so the birds were very good at avoiding being captured. These colour marked birds revealed the dependence they had on Boxthorn, and  helped inform Boxthorn removal work at the site.
