sing to plants

7

my love, @keepthefrank, tagged me to make a moodboard out of photos from my phone. 💖 i quite enjoyed putting this together so thank you for giving me the opportunity and reason, lotts! love you! x …as we can all see, i live for that black and white aesthetic.

i tag @ivegotfirefouraheart, @soulmatesandfate, @ohboytheyareinlove, @pinkislouder, @loveloveolivia, @florelikeaflower, @prettiestperrie, @softlavenders, @fuckinghatekissingyou, @gotothebank, and whoever else may want to do this! (of course, no one has to go create a moodboard if you don’t want to! please don’t feel pressured!) x

Witch Spoiler #1

Witchcraft isn’t as aesthetic as it’s portrayed.
It can totally be like those mood boards, or those pictures of witches surrounded by thousands of crystals and candles.
But more often than not
It’s kinda just mundane
Like I vent to my single amethyst geode piece and sing to my kidney bean plant and how he’s growing so well (His name’s Aaron.)
I practice spells on the floor of my bathroom in pyjamas with Hey Ya! by Outkast playing in the background
I make sigils in the corners of my notes like
Don’t think you’re less witchy because you use rocks instead of crystals, because you aren’t.

Hey Nai, hope you're having a peaceful day. I have three raised beds in my herb garden, currently rosemary is the only permanent fixture. How do you recommend I make the most of the three beds utilising witchy and edible herbs? 💕

So, the absolute best way to have an herb garden (in my opinion anyway) is an herb spiralThe main reasons for this are 1) It provides more surface area for planting, maximizing the space, 2) Simulates different moisture levels, temperature, and light levels (full sun, partial shade, etc). This means that you can grow a variety of plants in one spot, including some you may not be able to grow normally in your climate 3) After set up, it has minimal maintenance, but tends to produce more due to specific needs being met.

I plan on documenting the new one I build - I just got the bricks today! (There’s other materials you can use instead)

Tips for flat beds/gardens in general:

  • Lasagna gardening. It sounds silly, I know, but it’s a method of farming that creates really healthy plants, with minimal weeding required. Read about it, you’ll thank me later.
  •  Look for companion plantsThis is more important if you plan to plant vegetables, as some vegetables can affect growth if planted next to each other, but another reason is pest control. A lot of herbs repel specific insects that tend to eat specific crops (like catnip, hyssop, rosemary and sage deter cabbage moth), so it’s a pesticide free way of protecting your garden. Some even encourage flavor or growth.
  • Make sure to pair plants with similar needs together - rosemary likes it a bit drier, so don’t plant it next to mint, which likes lots of water.
  • Actually it’s probably best if you left mint in a container. It’s a ‘weed’, as in it takes over everything and can be hard to get rid of. You should look into things like that as well before planting anything.
  •  If you have pets, please make sure to look into things that can hurt them. A lot of plants we like to use aren’t so good for our furry friends, some are actually deadly.

The Witchy side of things:

  • Talk/sing to your plants as you tend to them, and as you spend time in the garden. Some non-witchy people do this as well, because it encourages growth. Personally, I think the stronger your relationship with the plant spirit the more effective the harvest will be in spells, but that’s not verified or anything.
  • Making your own compost makes a wonderful offering/gift to thank the plants when you harvest them. It’s also good for them, and you can feel good knowing that you’re putting less stuff in a landfill.
  • If you’re the type to use sigils, lightly carving them on the surface of your garden is simple and invisible.
  • If you worship a certain deity, making a tribute garden can be a great gift to them. Some of the seeds I ordered are for that, actually.

  • Make a meditation space around your plants. If you work hard to make a healthy and peaceful garden, it can become your solace, and a sacred area for spellwork. A place to clear your head to focus on your craft is really beneficial! :)
Dealing with plant spirits:

So I’m a spirit worker, and though I’ve only been practicing a little bit over a year, I’ve worked with many different spirits with most of them being plants.  This just comes from my own personal experience, so you don’t have to take this as law.

General:

Different kinds of plants have different personalities (obviously).  And as each plant has their own unique personality, generally they tend to be similar to other plants of the same type: cacti, succulents, vines, herbs, flowers, even going down to specific types such as lavender, pine trees, orchids, etc.  And then, how they react to communication depends on what stage they are in: seedling, middle, adult, etc.

Communication:

In general, plants tend to be fairly slow with communication.  And they generally don’t use words. The plants i have worked with preferred sending general feelings and images of what they were trying to communicate.  So be patient with yourself while working towards that communication.  Whenever you try communication, start by giving a small offering.  It can be elaborate, it can be watering it, spreading fertilizer (eggshells are good, a bit of sugar, stuff like that) around it, weeding around the roots, and small stuff like that.  Introduce yourself, and just start talking.  Explain what your day was like and what you did.  You can sing to the plant, they tend to love that.  Seedlings are more likely to talk very quickly to you, while old plants tend to take longer.  The time frame can be from a couple of hours to a couple weeks depending on the spirit.  If you want to create a relationship with the spirit, you’re going to have to communicate with the spirit regularly.  This process will take a while as it would trying to improve any friendship.

Now what?:

After you’ve introduced yourself to the spirit, it’s time to create a friendship!  Giving them small gifts/offerings is a great step.  Spending time with them will also help with that.  It doesn’t all have to be communication, you can read books aloud to them, watch movies with them, or anything else of that sort.  Find out their name!  Each spirit will have their own name, much like we do.  Some of them are really hard to spell and/or pronounce so I won’t be giving any examples here.  After building that friendship, you can do most anything you want!  You can have them assist you with spells, amplify your energy, and other such things.  Keep in mind that the amount of energy that the spirit will have depends on their vessel, the plant.  The larger the life force, the larger the amount of energy that you can borrow is.

Dealing with death:

Now, most of the plants I have worked with have been seedlings, and because I’m not perfect in the slightest many of them have died.  For me, dealing with the dead plant is a ritual to honor the spirit as it passes into a place where I haven’t been able to communicate with it yet.  I give it back to the earth (bury it if I can, or just leave it in a place where it can give back to the earth.  It gets a small funeral service, stating what they did for me, what I loved about them, that they will be missed, etc.  Before you leave them there give them a small offering to help it’s passage, water, fertilizer, eggshell, etc.  This isn’t necessary, but it is respectful and a good way for the spirit not to be mad.

Offerings

  • pebbles
  • water
  • fresh mulch
  • cleaning up forests
  • making bee feeders
  • songs
  • talking to them
  • meditating with them
  • storytelling
  • sugar
  • biodegradable food
  • weeding around them
  • eggshell powder
  • cold tea

Now, treat your plants well and get to know them!

tips from a mentally ill college student

an ongoing list of things i’m learning that i wish i’d known sooner. feel free to add on to the list or ask me to make edits! if some of this seems obvious, i apologize, but a lot of it never occurred to me or took two and a half years for me to start doing.

  • environment: where you study matters. don’t do it where you sleep, if possible. i block out time to go to the library or coffee shop, but you can also try a park, empty classroom, study room, etc.
  • pomodoro timer: as an ADHD student, using a pomodoro timer app has helped tremendously. other options include Forest and similar apps, but my brain tends to just go “okay, let the tree die then.” even this timer doesn’t always work for me, but it works often enough that i use it to study.
  • cook on sunday: or whenever you have a free chunk of time. cooking takes a lot out of me so i usually do it twice a week, sunday and wednesday night. i’ll chop up a lemon, de-frost frozen chicken, rub it in spices and olive oil, and put parchment paper over it, then put that in the oven. + i make rice with chicken broth instead of water. together it’s a solid meal. simple recipes using as few ingredients as possible are a lifesaver for me. search “easy recipes,” “simple recipes,” and the like for tons of options.
  • forgive yourself: it’s so hard for me to do and has taken time. you are going to have days where you simply can’t get anything done. it doesn’t mean you’re lazy. it doesn’t mean you’re a failure. even if you missed an assignment, you can still get a good grade in the class. furthermore, you NEED the recovery time. it is NOT time wasted.
  • counseling: if you have on-campus counseling, take advantage of it. even if they aren’t your main therapist, or you don’t usually go to therapy, or you don’t get along with the first person you see. try going a few times and find someone to click with. having access to someone who can write a doctor’s note is vital.
  • disability resources: if you need them, get in their program! do it! i don’t care if it makes you feel weird, if you don’t feel like you deserve it, etc. do it! do it! it’s one of the best things i did for myself on campus, and it’s the reason i can still go to school.
  • tell professors early on: i have adhd, major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and borderline personality disorder. there are going to be days when, even with counseling and medication, i will absolutely not be able to go to class or pay attention or what have you. if a professor knows i’m dealing with this stuff, they’re more likely to give me a break than they would otherwise.
  • plants are the bomb. name them. look up care sheets for them. talk to the people at plant shops, if you have any in your area. take them for walks. read about them. watch tv with them. sing to them. plants have saved my life many times over and they don’t ask much in return.
  • stockpile your happiness. i keep a list of things that bring positive emotions to me, and come back to it when my mood starts to swing down: things to do, video links, music, vines of cute animals, whatever. conversely, keeping a playlist of songs that help you get through pain can be exceptionally important when it’s three in the morning and no one is texting back.
  • there’s more than the national suicide prevention hotline. they get a lot of calls and are most concerned with whether you’re in immediate danger, and aren’t the best people to call in every situation. i say this because people reblog suicide prevention hotlines all the time, but don’t consider what the general purpose of each one is for. it can feel really shitty to be brushed off by someone who doesn’t think you’re “in crisis enough” for their services, so makes sure to have options saved beforehand. local crisis hotlines, text crisis hotlines, & online messaging crisis centers are important to keep on hand.
  • look for off-campus resources, too. see if there are any organizations in the area that could help you that aren’t tied to the school. again, it is good to have as many options for help as possible.
  • sometimes a rubber band on the wrist is the best option. or throwing ice cubes in the tub, or wrapping yourself in a blanket because it’s the only thing keeping you together right now. if i’m having the urge to self-harm, snapping a rubber band against my wrist is a safer option for me, even if it’s not THE safest option. like, ideally i would draw on my arm with marker, but if i’m in a bad enough state that won’t be enough for me, you feel? the safe coping mechanism that you’ll actually use is FAR more helpful than the safest option you never will.
  • online community. i frequent the #actuallybpd and #actuallyadhd tags on tumblr because these are people that understand what it’s like, and can help me vent my frustrations when i have no one to turn to. just remember not to over-engage in discourse if it’s bad for your mental state, like it is for me.
  • look up pictures of the diaphragm and how it works. i literally didn’t know what my diaphragm looked like, so breathing was even harder than it would’ve been otherwise. looking up animations of it helped me learn how to breathe slowly and deeply, which was not actually something i knew how to do.
  • white noise is the only way i can focus on studying. really.
  • asmr, binaural stuff, etc. if it helps you and it’s safe, there’s nothing wrong with it. i know the jury’s still out on whether it “actually works,” but even if it’s placebo, it helps me calm down quickly.
  • remember why you’re here: to learn, apply that knowledge, meet people, and make the world a better place. or to make cash money, whatever.
Imagine Draco and Luna

-Draco is all hard and down on himself after the war, just broken and sad and alone

-Luna being her nonjudgemental self just approaches him one day when he’s sitting by himself and he’s all cold and rude to her at first

-But she’s offering him lavender and chocolate chip cookies and tea in a sparkly periwinkle thermos so how can he say no?

-He caves anyways because she is the very first person to show kindness to him after the war

-She eventually takes him into her home and even though it’s a bit destroyed, she’s cleaned and rebuilt it and makes him work in the garden with her

-He slowly finds himself growing softer, always looking at her in this incredulous and confused amazement because he always thought she was an airhead but she’s so smart and insightful

-Draco is incredibly confused because he isn’t used to forgiveness or happiness or love but when he brings it up to Luna she just smiles and boops him on the nose which makes him blush

-(he is a sucker for nose boops)

-And he continues to insist he doesn’t deserve forgiveness but she just laughs kindly and says that’s not true

-But even if it was it wouldn’t matter because she forgives him anyways and the way she says it so matter-of-factly hits him s o h a r d

-Like for real how is this girl a real person??

-She seems to always know what he’s thinking, but surely she’s not a legilimens?

-He inquires about this one day and Luna simply shrugs and references her great-aunt Queenie but insists he’s much easier to read than he’d like to be

-Which should put him off but it DOESN’T

-She still has little things that constantly throw Draco off, though

-He doesn’t even know what to do with her because sometimes she’s just like “let’s go sunbathe naked and sing to the flowers!” and he suddenly finds himself being dragged along with her

-”But Luna it’s raining”

-Draco refuses but Luna just starts stripping but not in a sexy way? And Draco is like “LUNA I THOUGHT WE WEREN’T GONNA DO THAT”

-”Well just because you said you wouldn’t doesn’t mean I can’t”

-And he tries to be miffed about it but he just adores her whether he likes it or not

-Eventually, he takes her home to meet his parents (again)

-Narcissa is very intimidated and keeps pulling Draco off to the side because she doesn’t know what to do

-”Draco, dear, she’s singing to the potted plants again idk what to do”

-I just adore the idea of Draco and Luna after the war patching each other up and learning to love again
