Guillermo del Toro's highly personal monster film 'The Shape of Water' speaks to 'what I feel as an immigrant'
Director Guillermo del Toro speaks about his latest movie, "The Shape of Water," one of the breakout films of the Telluride Film Festival.
By Josh Rottenberg

Obviously the world has changed dramatically since you were shooting this film. I can’t imagine you could anticipate the way those themes would resonate …

I did. And the reason why is that I’m Mexican. I’ve been going through immigration all my life, and I’ve been stopped for traffic violations by cops and they get much more curious about me than the regular guy. The moment they hear my accent, things get a little deeper.

I know it sounds kind of glib, but honestly, what we are living I saw brewing through the Obama era and the Clinton era. It was there. The fact that we got diagnosed with a tumor doesn’t mean the cancer started now.

Hopefully one of the things the movie shows is that from 1962 to now, we’ve taken baby steps — and a lot of them not everyone takes. The thing that is inherent in social control is fear. The way they control a population is by pointing at somebody else — whether they’re gay, Mexican, Jewish, black — and saying, “They are different than you. They’re the reason you’re in the shape you’re in. You’re not responsible.” And when they exonerate you through vilifying and demonizing someone else, they control you.

I think the movie says that there are so many more reasons to love than to hate. I know you sound a lot smarter when you’re skeptical and a cynic, but I don’t care.

But you’re not on a mission to change the way people see genre?

No, I can’t. I know that what I saw when I was a kid had redemptive powers. Some people find Jesus. I found Frankenstein. And the reason I’m alive and articulate and semi-sane is monsters. It’s not an affectation. It’s completely spiritually real to me. And I’m not going to change.

Imagine Mary realizing both of her sons, Sam and Dean, are in love with the same girl, you.

“Morning.” Sam mumbled as he walked into the kitchen and saw you, Mary and Castiel there, you still cooking the pancakes and her setting everything else up for breakfast with Castiel’s help.

“Morning sweetie.” Mary smiled up at him as he leaned down to kiss her cheek before he turned to take a good look at you.

“Wow” he breathed out and you looked at him for a second before in the end giggling as you tucked a few strands of hair behind your ear.

“What?” you asked, looking up at the older man as he blinked rapidly, staring at you almost awestruck. You glanced at his mother that was still there but luckily was not looking at the two of you.

“You just- I never thought you’d look this good in my clothes.” he said with an adorable dimpled smile as he rubbed the back of his neck nervously.

You laughed looking back at the food, after glancing down at yourself for a moment. You weren’t in the mood for trying really hard so along with the messy hair you had stolen one of Sam’s flannels that could work as a dress for you and wore it. It was a nice chance compared to you wearing always Dean’s shirts. There was something similar in this, both their clothes made you feel at peace, they had a certain scent to them that brought the same kind of comfort their hugs did but at the same time that scent was so different. And it reminded you instantly of whose clothes you were wearing.

“Thanks” you bit your lip, opting to look only at the pancakes as you felt your cheeks heat up. You had a soft spot for the younger Winchester, you couldn’t deny that, you were really close and had many things in common. He was sweet and kind, gentle and caring. You knew that when you needed to talk to someone he would always be there for you. You were like a little sister to him, as far as you knew at least, even if for you he meant a lot more than just family. But you weren’t going to do something to risk what you had, you’d much rather bottle up your feelings than ruin all of this.

Besides, he wasn’t the only one involved in all of this.

“But- if you want it back I could give it. I’m sorry I didn’t ask I just- it looked too comfy and I-” you started rambling, trying to find an excuse for yourself but he shook his head.

“No, no no!” he said a little too fast and you bit your lip at his reaction “By all means-” he breathed out “-You can keep it, it looks better on you anyway.” he said adorably and you grinned.

“Thank you Sammy.” you stood on your tiptoes and kissed his cheek, making his smile even wider.

“So- what do you want with your pancakes, you didn’t tell me?” you asked and he paused in thought for a moment.

“Uhm I think I’ll go with some eggs today.” he paused in thought.

“Do you want me to make them?” you asked, ready to start on them already but he shook his head with a laugh.

“No you already do enough for us.” he pecked your forehead “I’ll do that myself.” he winked and started working on them next to you as you still laughed and chatted happily.

“You know I love taking care of you anyway.” you mumbled with a shy shrug and he smiled warmly.

“Yes, and I know it. But it’s not bad if you take a break once in a while and let us do all the work.” he said matter of factlyand you just shrugged “You know you deserve it.”

“Not as much as you guys do honestly I-” you shook your head, flipping another pancake.

“Dare you complete that sentence.” it was Dean’s stern voice but the moment you looked at him he had a small smile on. You sighed, knowing you weren’t going to win this fight against both of them so you just shook your head.

Oh and he also happened to be the other person involved.

“Morning guys.” he greeted as he kissed Mary and came towards you, not missing a chance to wrap his arms around your waist.

A small squeak left your lips as he pressed his body against yours and you both chuckled in the end as he kissed the back of your head “Damn smells amazing.” he breathed out as he looked over at the pancakes.

“Thought you’d like them, and in case you are not really into pancakes today I made some cherry pie for you.” you smirked and he looked at you with a wide grin.

“Gosh” he breathed out with wide eyes that made him look like a little kid on Christmas day “Marry me!” he grinned and you laughed.

“You’d have to take me out first, Winchester!” you said as you heard him laugh as he squeezed you, burying his face in your hair.

“Anytime princess.” he mumbled, nuzzling his face before in the end he leaned down and kissed your neck.

You giggled as his morning scruff tickled you and you turned your head to peck his cheek, making him smile down at you. It felt so refreshing to see him like this. It has been such a long while since you saw Dean so carefree.

Of course you had gotten the chance to see him relax sometimes, when it was just the two of you and he’d let loose, but those moments were rare. It mostly was you holding him as you either sat in silence or he talked to you about a nightmare- or whatever was worrying him at the moment.

Your relationship with Dean was different from that of Sam. While with Sam you were all playful, most of the time, and acted all cute together: watching movies, reading books and talking about all kinds of nerdy stuff your relationship with Dean was more contact and less words. You’d spent many nights in each other’s rooms just holding each other, gazing into each other’s eyes like some love-sick couple – well you were love sick you couldn’t deny it at least to yourself – and only sometimes talking. Dean wasn’t really a man of words so when it came to just the two of you he talked about only the things that troubled him. But even the few words were enough for you to get a look into his world. Heck, the mere fact that he trusted you with his thoughts and feelings was enough to let you know how important you were to him.

Of course there were serious moments with Sam as well, he too trusted you with his worries as well, and as that there were funny moments with Dean. Both brothers were very similar but at the same time your relationship with each of them was completely different. Each one of them completed a side of you that in returned completed them as well.

“Hey you two-” Sam’s voice got Dean’s attention. You looked at him to, luckily, see he had a small smile on his face “You’re not alone alright?”

“Sadly” Dean added and you giggled as Sam shot him a bitch-face.

“Why don’t you prove yourself useful and and prepare some bacon huh?” Sam obviously found an excuse to get him away from you.

“Oooh yes, love me some bacon!” Dean said with a glint in his eyes and you chuckled at how childish he was being.

“But first-” he said cupping your face as he leaned down and kissed your forehead, his lips much like Sam’s previously lingered a little longer than they should have. He looked down into your eyes, exactly like Sam had done, and offered you one last gentle smile before going back to playful him and started working on his bacon.

The three of you still talked and laughed as you had each Winchester on each side of you. Her sons’ laughter caught Mary’s attention and this time she took a real good look at the three of you. For a second she smiled fondly at how childlike you were all being, happy that her kids looked so carefree around you, but when realization downed on her hersmile faded away.

“Mary?” Castiel’s low voice caught her attention as she looked at the angel.

“Are you alright?” he asked with a small frown.

“Should I be Castiel?” she sighed sadly “I mean, how can I even be? At first I was happy about Dean but now- seeing this-Knowing that my one son’s happiness depends on the other’s grief- how can I be happy?”

“What- what do you mean?” Castiel frowned with a tilt of his head and she looked from the three of you to him.

“I thought seeing my sons fall in love would be something great. I just didn’t know it was going to be with the same girl.”

Inspired by THIS POST about gay Disney Princesses.

When the old beggar comes to the door, Addy knows better than to let her in. She doesn’t look at the rose or the woman too long; she shuts the door.

Some will call her arrogant or selfish, but what is she to do? No guards, parents in the capital (not, here, not here), and the knowledge that she is the damsel in all those fairy tales weighs heavily on her mind. Oh, little princess, far from home and alone, so alone.

The Enchantress (for they do not call her witch) makes sure that she stays that way.

Alone except for her wilting rose.

(She did not want it, would not take it, so she was bound to it. Such is the way of Princesses.)

———————————-

Addy used to have frightful bursts of temper. Her face would turn red, fat tears rolling down her cheeks, mouth screwed into an upside down kidney bean. Anything could set her off; a too tight corset, a walk ended too quickly, another toy sword taken away. She’d wail and scream, kick her feet and punch the air, tear and rend anything within arm’s reach.

The first time she has a fit in her new form, it’s after Mrs. Potts reads the King and Queen’s decision on her…condition. She’s to stay here, on the outskirts of their kingdom, until a Prince comes to release her from her spell. Alone until a different sort of bond is forced on her, until she is made to change from princess to beast to bride.

Addy know why they refuse to save her. It’s because she’s always been too big, too strong, too ill-tempered, too–

In her rage, Addy upends the tea tray, forgetting, forgetting, forgetting.

She is reminded when fine china falls to the hard ground, when it rattles, when it shatters, when it screams.

“No!” Addy falls to her knees next to her dishes– no, her friends and frantically rights them, apologies tumbling from her lips, eyes brimming with tears.

“Temper,” Mrs. Potts murmurs, more out of reflex than anything, looking obviously terrified. She hops from her side to her base, better able to control her new body than any other castle resident. Her lid is sitting askew and her eyes are wide (so wide) as they dart from one cup to another. “Daniel? Daniel!”

Addy cuts herself on broken porcelain and flinches. She–she’d killed him, she’d been so thoughtless, how could she? “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry–”

“I’m okay,” a little voice says. “I’m okay, Mom!”

Addy sobs as she locates him under the silver platter, on his side, trapped. She throws the platter too hard, lodging it in the wall, and takes Daniel in her paws.

“It’s okay, Princess Addy,” Daniel chirps at her. He’s a little older than her, just a few years, and he’s always trying to be strong. His eyes are wide (too wide), but he offers her a tremulous smile. “I’m okay.”

“Thank goodness,” Mrs. Potts says and her china clinks as she hops forward.

Addy’s eyes lock on the horrible, huge chip in his rim.

I did that.

She’s across the room before being aware of setting Daniel down, of standing, of leaping away.

“Princess,” Mrs. Potts says from her low, low position on the floor. “What–”

“Don’t call me that,” Addy grits out. Her huge body leans heavily against the door, making it groan, as she desperately tries to wrap her paw around the handle. She can’t stop looking at the chip, the proof of harm, the proof that something much worse can happen so easily. “Don’t call me– I’m not–I’m not the Princess. I’m the Beast.”

The door crashes open and she disappears.

————————————————

It’s weeks before the servants realize that she’s never going to answer to her name again. She no longer sleeps in her princess bed or attempts to wear her princess clothes. She wears pants scavenged from the servants’ quarters, tunics from her father’s closet, ties her mane back with twine instead of ornaments.

“Addy!” they call. “Princess Addy!”

The Beast doesn’t even know who that is.

Preference: What They Secretly Love That You Do.

Darry:

Darry loves when you’ll play with his hair. When you two are in front of the gang it’ll just be you lightly playing with the hairs at the back of his neck but when you two are alone or simply just in front of his brothers you’ll run your fingers through his hair and just move them gently. He’ll complain at first but it’s half hearted because it really does calm him down.

It was almost midnight on a Saturday Ponyboy and Sodapop had just gone off to bed but you and Darry were still sitting on the couch, to comfy to move. Your legs were over Darry’s lap and your body was pressed against his. His eyes were closed and his head was tilted back against the back of the couch but your eyes stayed open as you watched him. You moved your arm up slowly so you could begin running your fingers absently through your boyfriends hair. You saw the faint glimmer of a smile cross Darry’s lips as you did so and you watched his worries slowly relax off of him.

Sodapop:
Sodapop loves when you drag him along to see ‘girly movies’. He’ll complain about the whole way to the theater but the second you’re watching it he gets almost more into it than you do.

You were sitting at the drive-in theater with Sodapop’s arm around you as you waited for the movie to start. They were doing a special showing of ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ and you had been excited all week since you convinced Sodapop to take you. Now that you were there sitting and waiting he was sulking to himself.

“This is stupid. Can’t we just go back to my house and see what’s on? Or we could go to the regular theater in town. I think there was a movie there that you would like.”

You turn and give him a look. “Stop pouting and just enjoy the movie okay?”

Sodapop just sighed and put his arm around you. The movie soon started up and Sodapop was immediately captivated. He was so into the movie that he wouldn’t even turn his head away from the screen at your many attempts to kiss him. When the movie finally came to the end you couldn’t help but laugh as Soda looked over at you.

“Don’t you dare tell the others about this.”

“Yes, m’am.” You laughed causing him to nudge you playfully before leaning in to finally give you a kiss.

Ponyboy:
Ponyboy loves when you take his sweatshirt. He’ll whine that now he’ll be cold now but he really doesn’t care. He just loves being able to look over at you with his hoodie on.

You were all sitting at the drive in seats. The movie was about halfway through and you couldn’t stop shivering. Your head was resting on Ponyboy’s shoulder and you looked up at him. “I’m cold.”

“You knew we were coming here. You should brought a jacket.” He said and you continued to stare at him so he sighed and sat up so he could take off his sweatshirt and give it to you. You put it on with a grin and leaned back into his arms.

“Jeez, Y/N, now I’m freezing.” he groaned and so you leaned up to kiss his cheek before turning back to the screen. Once you were looking away he looked down at you and smiled.

Two-Bit:
Two-Bit loves when you’ll get him to dance with you. Sometimes you do it seriously and try to get him to slow dance, other times you’re just messing around to whatever comes on the radio but he loves using you as his excuse to get up and dance to his favorite songs.

Two-Bit and you were sitting on the back of his car, the radio could be heard faintly through the cars open windows. The two of you had been silent, holding hands and just drinking some beer when a song you recognized came on. You smiled softly and looked up at him before standing and tugging his hand.

“Dance with me.” You said.

“Come on, baby, I don’t dance.” He replied and didn’t budge.

“Please,” You begged gently with another small tug at his arm and he relented easily and stood. You pulled Two-Bit close to you and made him sway back and forth with you. He complied until the song started coming to an end and he began lifting you off the ground spinning you, causing you to erupt in a fit of laughter. After he put you down again you persuaded him to dance for a couple more songs.

Dally:
Dally loves when you take his hand to hold. He never went to take it on his own as it would look more his style to have an arm around your shoulders but he did love when you would take his hand in your own. He loved the feeling and though he would never outright admit it you always knew by the way he would squeeze your hand lightly every once in a while or kiss your knuckles when the gang wasn’t looking.

Dally and you were trailing behind the rest of the group as you all walked down the sidewalk into town. He had just lit a cigarette and once one of his hands was free you carefully thread your fingers together and he squeezed your hand gently. Once you all had arrived at where you were going you moved to pull your hand away so his friends wouldn’t tease him but as you did his hold tightened and you couldn’t help but grin to yourself as you felt his them gently moving to stroke your hand. Two-Bit went to say something but with a glare from Dally he shut his mouth quickly. He didn’t let go of your hand once for the rest of the night.

Steve:
Steve loves when you take care of him after a fight or a rumble. He does love to show off his injuries like they were trophies but while he would never admit it to you there was something nice about you fussing over him and making sure he wasn’t hurt to bad.

Steve was laying on the couch at the Curtis house as you gently held a cloth to his bleeding lip. You sighed in frustration however at the fact that he kept talking.
“What are you doing that for, Y/N. Let it be I want people to see how tough I am.” He grinned and you just shook your head.

“Steve, don’t be so stubborn and let me help you. I hate it enough when you go out and fight the least you can do is let me make sure you’re all right after.” You frown.

“Alright fine,” he said begrudgingly. “But only for you, babe.”

You nod and press the cloth to his lip again and his eyes close. You place your free hand on his cheek to stroke it comfortingly and you can’t help bit feel happy as you see him lean into the touch.

Johnny:
Johnny loves when you get all clingy on him. Whether it’s in private and you have his arms wrapped around his neck as you lay as close as possible or whether it’s in front of the gang sitting on his lap with your head resting on his shoulder Johnny lives for these moments.

You were asleep in your room when you heard someone come through the window. You weren’t to worried as you knew it was your boyfriend Johnny. You always left it open a crack for him. Johnny carefully crawled into bed beside you and immediately your arms wrap around his neck and your legs around his waist to hold him close. As he spoke you pressed a few gentle kisses to his jawline and down his neck.

“Hey, love..” he whispered softly and you just hugged him tighter. You felt his hand run gently up and down your back and soon you felt Johnny relaxing into your embrace.

I sat on the couch zapping through the channels and letting out a sigh. Grabbing the TV paper, I let myself fall back against the backrest before checking the program. “Tom?”, I called out for my boyfriend but I got no response. “Tom, which movie do you want to watch tonight?”

Still getting no response, I stood up and entered our bedroom. “Tom, where are you?”, my voice was loud, probably loud enough for our neighbours to hear.
“I’m here, darling!”, I heard his voice and turned around, heading for the bathroom. His head popped out of the door frame, his eyes curiously looking at me.

“What’s the matter?”, he wanted to know before I entered the bathroom. And then came the moment I realised he wasn’t wearing a shirt.
There was a moment of silence and a grin on his face while my eyes swiftly gazed over his abs-covered abdomen and I leaned against the door frame.
“Um, I just… eh, I wanted to know which movie we’re going to watch tonight?”, I asked him before my eyes nervously met his. I hated it when I got flustered around him. It’s just that I didn’t expect him to be shirtless!

“I told you I can’t tonight.”, the brunet boy sighed, the smile vanishing from his face.
“What? But it’s movie night…”, I pouted, knowing that he couldn’t resist my puppy face. “I know, I know…”, he breathed, his gaze going to the ground.
“And you didn’t tell me.”, I grumbled before I crossed my arms in front of my chest.
“Yes, I did! I got this thing tonight. It’s nothing big but…”, he began before I finished his sentence with an annoyed tone in my voice, “more important than movie night. I get it.”

I lightly pushed myself from the door frame, ready to think about another lonely evening but Tom stood in front of me, grabbing my wrists and placing my hands on his sides before wrapping his arms around me.
The look in his brown eyes was as soft as his hot skin and a few strands fell on his forehead before he spoke up, “I’m gonna take a shower. And I think you should join me.”
An annoyed scoff escaped my lips before his lips collided with mine in a passionate kiss which I couldn’t help but return. I was mad at him! But resisting him was simply impossible…
His lips quickly wandered to my neck, sucking on the sensitive skin and my face blushed while my body slowly melted into his form.
“It has been weeks…”, he whispered softly, his lips brushing over my ear while his hands caressed my hips. Yeah, somehow we didn’t have a lot of time for that since he’d been busy all the time.

With his teeth grazing over my skin and his hips pressed against mine it was incredibly hard not to moan but I managed to push him away from me slowly, my body instantly aching for his touch. “Tom, you should get ready for your thing.”, I mumbled, noticing disappointment in his eyes.
“Did you just air quote me?”, he scoffed after he completely let go of me, his eyebrows narrowing. “Yeah, I did.”, I shrugged before I headed towards the bedroom. “Whatever…”, I heard him say under his breath, making my mood fall even more.

Laying down on my side of the bed and grabbing the book I was currently reading, I let out I sigh I didn’t know I was holding.
I only heard that Tom was showering but decided to ignore the guilty feeling inside my chest. It wasn’t his fault that he was away so much… but I was so mad in that moment.
Quickly getting lost in the lines of my book, time went by pretty fast and soon my half naked boyfriend entered the room without looking at me and stood in front of the closet.

I glanced over my book, our eyes meeting through the mirror and I quickly turned my attention back to my pages.
But I had to look again, watching his shoulder blades getting covered by a white shirt and his legs by dark pants before he put on a matching jacket. Watching him putting on clothes was at least as entertaining as watching him taking them off.

He hesitated when he wanted to choose a tie, which was always my thing to do. Suddenly he stood in front of the mirror wrapping his tie around his neck and pretty soon I realised that it was my favourite, black tie with the light stripes.
Our eyes met again and I looked at my book again, acting as if nothing had happened.

The tension between us was raising with every second that passed.
“Do you expect me to stay or why are you giving me the silent treatment?”, he suddenly said, turning around to face me.
“I just can’t believe you leave me again. It’s movie night!”, I exclaimed, smashing my book on the nightstand before standing up, “And it’s not the first time you do this. I’m just pissed off that I’m always looking forward to be with you and then you ditch me.”
“I’m not ditching you!”, he objected, his fingers running through his hair, “They want me to be there, so I am there. Y/N, it’s my job. That’s what I do!”
“Yeah, but you just told me that you can’t tonight. You could’ve told me a couple of days ago!”, I grumbled, crossing my arms in front my chest.

“I told you on Wednesday!”
“No, you didn’t!”
“Yes, I did!”
“NO, YOU DIDN’T!”

A frustrated groan escaped his lips before he turned around and left our bedroom. I followed him, ready to continue our argument but he went into the bathroom, slamming the door behind him. I let myself fall onto the couch, taking a deep breath. We had been arguing a lot lately. And I just wanted things to be easy again…

I was too busy staring at the plant next to the TV that I didn’t notice Tom approaching me from behind. “I’m going to go, now.”, he stated before touching my shoulder lightly.
And it hurt. Not physically but mentally… knowing that he was leaving me again.
“Yeah, have fun without me.”, I mumbled without even looking at him. I heard him sigh. Then he mumbled something under his breath. Then the front door slammed into the frame.

He was gone.
Curling myself into a fetus position, I pulled a blanket over me. The following thirty minutes were filled with self loathing thoughts and there might have been a few tears.

But after I had calmed myself down, I grabbed my phone and called Harrison.

“Hey, Y/N! What’s up?”, he greeted me happily, immediately answering his phone.
“Hey, Haz… Can you come over?”, I ask, a quiet sniff being audible.
“Yeah, sure! Are you… okay?”, he wanted to know and I shrugged before I realised that he couldn’t see me.
“I’m… it’s just… Tom ditched movie night.”, I replied sadly.
“Again?!”, he mumbled, probably shaking his head.
“Yes, again…He said he had, I quote, a thing tonight… and now I’m bored.”, I explained quietly.
“Okay, I’m on my way.”, he responded and hung up quickly.

Too many minutes later the door bell finally rang and I literally sprinted towards the door but opened it relatively slowly.
“Finally!”, I exclaimed after I saw Harrison smiling at me. “I bought ice cream since you sounded like you could need it.”, he laughed, holding up two cups of Ben & Jerry’s.

“You’re the best!”, I grinned, pulling him into the flat before rushing off into the kitchen to get spoons.
After I went back to the living room I saw that Harrison had placed the cups on the table. “So you wanna talk about it?”, he asked carefully, his eyes looking at me softly.
“No, let’s just watch a movie.”

But half an hour into the movie later, Harrison paused it after I had started telling him about what had happened today. I couldn’t keep all this in. I literally exploded, rambling and rambling.

“And then I said ‘Have fun without me’ and he just left! I mean, why?”, I sighed, taking another spoon of my ice cream, “It’s just… he always hugs me and kisses my cheek before he leaves.”
With my feet laying on his tighs, he drawed circles with his thumb on my shank while I mentally thanked myself for shaving my legs this morning.

Harrison looked at me, sympathy in his eyes and took a deep before he spoke up, “But you have to see it from his perspective, too, you know. You were mad at him… of course he didn’t hug and kiss you. He probably thought that you just wanted him to leave.”
“Yeah, you’re right…”, I mumbled, pinching the bridge of my nose, “I’m a horrible girlfriend.”
“Hey, I didn’t say that! You’ve been dating for three years now and Tom’s still talking about how perfect you are.”, he claimed, his head tilting towards his shoulder while he looked at me.

I smiled to myself briefly, thinking about Tom saying those words to Harrison. “Yeah, but I’m so selfish and always whiny…”, I drifted off, watching my fingers playing with the hem of my shirt, “And we’ve been arguing a lot lately. Usually we only have these slight variances. And now…”, I sighed deeply before I looked at Harrison again, whose head rested lazily against the pillow tugged between his head and the backrest, listening attentively.
After a few moments of silence I realised that he didn’t know what to say, so I continued, “And we haven’t had sex for 5 weeks now. That’s like… a new record or something.”

Harrison laughed loudly, shaking his head slightly at my open statement.
“But I thought he wanted you to join him in the shower today?”, his eyebrows narrowed while a cheeky smile was on his face and I only shrugged.

“Yeah, but the times before he was either too tired or something. I’m probably so bad…”, I mumbled quietly, lowering my head before a question popped up in my mind and I looked at Harrison with raised eyebrows. “Did he say anything to you?”

Harrison shifted uncomfortably on his seat, stumbling over some incomprehensible words.

Snap Decision

(A chance meeting with a stranger at a bar helps you recover from a bad breakup.)

Warnings: 11000+ words of mostly sex stuff.  Bad ex boyfriends. People doing inadvisable things.  Listen up kids: in real life you should be more cautious about who you let take naked pictures of you! Lots and lots of sex.  If you’ve read my stuff before, you know the drill.

You thought it would be fun to work in sales after you graduated from university; you would travel around the country, meeting new people, holding meetings in fancy high rise office buildings in big cities, wining and dining clients at gourmet restaurants while you closed deals and made boatloads of money.  The reality was that you were selling industrial wastewater management systems, making a moderate income, while traveling four days a week to factories and chemical refineries in some of the least glamorous locations on earth.  You didn’t mind the work itself, but the evenings alone in small town hotel rooms were dull and disheartening, so you would frequently head out to a local movie theater or neighborhood bar to distract yourself from the loneliness on the road.

It was pouring down rain outside and you decide to run to the closest place you could find to grab a drink, rather than risk driving around and getting lost.  That’s how you found yourself sitting alone at the bar of the Applebee’s restaurant that was adjacent to your hotel, sipping on something called a Blue Hawaiian, in a town you couldn’t even remember the name of.

Unruly children sat with their families having dinner in the nearby booths, while innocuously bland pop songs played overhead.  You took one sip of the cloyingly sweet blue cocktail in front of you and immediately regretted your decision to come here tonight. Given the lousy week you had experienced, you would have been better off drinking cheap whiskey at a dive bar filled with unapologetic alcoholics.  Here, the family friendly atmosphere mixed with the empty promises of a fruity cocktail that was designed to trick you into thinking you were on a tropical island vacation instead of in your real life.  Your real crappy life.

You had totally blown the sale today.  The clients had a million questions about the technical specifications of the products you were trying to sell, but you kept tripping over your words and making yourself sound like an idiot.  You blamed your poor work performance on lack of sleep.  And you blamed the lack of sleep on your boyfriend, David.  Actually, he was your ex-boyfriend now.  After more than a year together, you dumped him for cheating on you.

He claimed he was faithful, but you were certain he was lying.  He never picked up his phone when you called him from out on the road.  He would eventually call you back, but his stories about where he was and what he was doing always sounded a little off.  The final blow came when your friend Stephanie told you she saw him going into a movie theater with another girl.  David claimed Stephanie was mistaken and that you were just paranoid and jealous for no reason.  You wanted to believe him, but deep down you were sure that Stephanie was right.  All the unresolved questions you had about what David was doing while you were working could easily be answered if he had been cheating on you.  David cried when you told him it was over, he begged you to reconsider, but you were resolute and just walked away.

That had been a week ago, and every day since then, you questioned whether or not you made the right decision.  You had no hard proof that he had been unfaithful.  Sure, Stephanie said she saw him, but she only saw from a distance.  Maybe she was mistaken.  Maybe it was just someone who looked like David.

“Is this seat taken?”

GREG WEISMAN IS MY HERO

Can we take 5 minutes to read it? I Love how Greg support LGBTQ people and how he don’t care about Twitter Hate. Ok dearies, all of us know about Marie Logan aka Garfield Logan’s Mother (Beast Boy). But what do you think about it? who can be the others LGBTQ CHARACTERS!?!? I hope Bluepulse! Obviously because is my favorite ship, as a Bisexual Mexican Boy, I Love Jaime Reyes and his relationship with Bart Allen, even if only are Best Friends. We saw Poison Ivy on Season One and she’s officially Bisexual, hope se more about her and Harley on Season 3. In the animated movies we have 2 LGBTQ CHARACTERS and I need them on Young Justice, John Constantine (Bi) and Batwoman (Lesby). And also Aqualad and Jericho are Bisexuals on the comics. In my opinion, Kaldur don’t need a girlfriend or boyfriend, he need time to forget Tula. Hope see Jericho and Slade on S3, even if he’s not Bi, love him since Teen Titans. Love you all!
2016: The Return To Anime

I used to watch a lot of anime before, but when I moved away from my friends whom were fellow fans of Japanese animation, I became really bad at taking any initiative to sit down and watch anything new. So my New Years resolution was to simply watch more anime during 2016 (for inspiration and entertainment)! ;D And in order to prove to said friends that I am indeed keeping my promise, as well as to take the opportunity to recommend good shows to others, I will be sharing my progress list and general opinions.

OBS: Some of these shows are not appropriate for an younger audience!! Before viewing, please check out  the recommended age restrictions, genre and potential trigger warnings!

END OF YEAR UPDATE: 25 shows in total! Not bad at all considering that I maybe watched 2-3 shows the year before. But I still have a lot of series that I want to see, so don´t be surprised if I make a new post for 2017. ;)

My personal top 3? I would say Death Parade, Re:Zero and Madoka Magica.

ANIME COMPLETED:

Mushishi (S1) - Not a single cliffhanger in the whole show, so it makes for  perfect bedtime stories for teens/adults. The english dub was really good and the landscape art is 10/10.

Kino No Tabi/Kino´s Journey (S1) - Do not let the simple and cute style fool you! This show contains murder, cannibalism, suicide and war!! And it asks the hard questions in life!! RUN if you do not want to contemplate the meaning of existence!!

One Punch Man (S1+3OVA) - OK, now I know why this is in 4th place on IMDB´s “Best TV-series” list. The animation is some of the best I have ever seen in an action anime! It is simply stunning to look at and it is fun ride all the way to the out of this world (literally) finale.

Sakurako-san No Ashimoto Ni Wa Shitai Ga Umatteiru/Beautiful Bones: Sakurako’s Investigation (S1) - Pretty much like an anime version of the TV-show Bones. I love mysteries where you have to follow clues in order to solve a murder so a second season is strongly desired.

Owari No Seraph/Seraph Of The End (S1+S2+10OVA) - Pretty predictable, but the the bloody fight scenes are fabulous. Needs even more angst thou (…she said even though a bunch of children are butchered in the very first episode….). >:3

Death Parade (S1) - And there is all the angst!!! Do not watch if you do not like pain in your soul!! Heart cannot be repaired!! AHRUM!! Excuse me. The show is really well written and the artists really knew how to create the perfect atmosphere to tell this dark story.

Free! (S1+S2+4OVA) - It feels like everyone and their grandmother has seen this show, so of course I fell on the bandwagon. For the first 11 episodes thou I was very neutral to it… But goddammit the first season finale had me sheering, squealing and tearing up!! (Let Rin be happy!!) Sadly only the S2 OVA had me laughing; apart from that episode, the humor was not at all up my alley.

Zankyou No Terror/Terror In Resonance (S1) - I really like the style and the smooth animation in this one. And DANG, THAT ENDING! If you like thrillers that are completely based on reality and science (like Beautiful Bones) then this could be perfect for you.

Wolf’s Rain (S1+4OVA) - I remember trying to watch this when I was like 15, but I never got past episode 3 for some reason. Which is a real shame because I think that I would really, really liked it then. Perfectly angsty and tragic for little wannabe-emo-teen-me. Do you like dark fantasies with pretty people/wolves? Then do not miss out on this one!

Mahon Shoujo Madoka Magica/Puella Magi Madoka Magica (S1+1 movie) - Oh shit. Oh holy shit. I would never have guessed that this show, this thing that looks so darn innocent and cute in design and summary, would have me in so much emotional turmoil (very much like Steven Universe in that way). But seriously; amoungst all of the animes on this list, this is in my opinion the one with the most captivating story-line, plot development and characters (I simply had to watch all 12 episodes in one sitting). Some people hate the ending, but I think it worked really well (even though all the tears could have clouded my judgement). And if you liked the show, then you MUST watch the movie Rebellion! Also: One of the the best English dubs I have ever heard in my life!! UPDATE: I have now seen everything twice… I cry every times I see Homura on screen. (O_Q)

Kuragehime/Princess Jellyfish (S1) - I watched this before when it first came out but I had a hard time remembering anything from it apart from the characters. Glad I gave it a re-watch because it´s super cute and silly; perfect for when you just want to give your feels a break from all the angst and suffering other shows come with (*stares at the one above*). I also highly recommend the live-action movie based on this! :D

Boku Dake Ga Inai Machi/Erased (S1) - This show is both intriguing and stunning! I love how modern animation uses lightning and this show is a good example of that (same goes for Death Parade). Downside: Stress, stress and even more stress!! Please, just let the small children live!!! My heart cannot take this torture!! D,,X But the stress aside, it was all worth it at the end.

Jigoku Shojo/Hell Girl (S1) - My Golb, the young girls in this look exactly like the characters I would draw at 14-16. X,D The animation is just okay, and it takes a long time before we learn anything worthwhile about the main characters. But what made me watch a whole season (26 ep) was because of the interesting stories in each episode. It was fascinating to see how little/much it was required for people to give up their souls for eternal damnation in return for the death of a person they hated.

Steins;Gate (S1+1OVA) - It took me a while to get into the story, but by the half way point, when shit got really intense, I was waaay hooked. I usually do not like stories that involve time-traveling because it makes my head hurt, but this (Like Madoka Magica) was really well written. I have very little to fault the show on ((apart from how the harassment of a trans girl is used for comedy in at least 2 episodes…)) and would recommend!

Love Live! School Idol Project (S1+S2+1 movie) - Decided to watch something really cute with sis again and this is what we ended up with. And oh darn it, it is cute alright! Everything is so sugary sweet and lovely, and good music too that you will hum on for weeks. Apart form the occasional funky looking CGI (which actually looks really good in the movie), the animation is top notch. A simple story about a bunch of girls and their lives and friendships when guys are not in the picture.

Makura No Danshi/Pillow Boys (S1) - Finally met up with my anime loving friends and this was one of the things we saw. The episodes in this are very short, all of which are about different types of guys talking to YOU before you go to sleep. It´s… different to say the least. Who was my favourites? Hmmm… I guess the guy from Ep 2, since I recall him the clearest. He also felt like someone who had known me for a while and I appreciated that. WARNING: Ep 10 did give me some extreme rapist vibes! BAD TOUCH!! (O_O)

Koutetsujou No Kabaneri/Kabaneri Of The Iron Fortress (S1) - If you like bloody action of high quality with humans fighting against superhuman enemies then this is most surely something for you. Many parallels can be pulled to Attack on Titian, but I would never call this a rip-off. All the animation is in the A+ class and there is this wonderful colouring/lighting effect they sometimes use for close ups which makes the characters look absolutely stunning. The level of details on the character designs also stuck out to me (A+ there too).

Shokugeki no Soma / Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma (S1+S2+1OVA) - Also known as food porn. I had never heard of this until Dan and Phil mentioned it in a video and when I understood that it was about food I had to check it out. I love shows/stories that are centered around cooking (Hell´s Kitchen, Master Chef, Kitchen Princess, etc) so I really got hooked on this. Not only is the food animated beautifully, but you learn a lot at the same time. And the absurd (dirty) humor is so redicoulus that I cannot help but laugh.

Re:Zero Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu / Re:ZERO - Starting Life in Another World (S1) - When I first saw posters for this show they never caught my interest. It looked so much like the generic fantasy harem anime that I just ignored it. But then a friend forced me to actually see it and BOY was I wrong. Let me put it this way: Imagine Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni but with a higher budget and set in a fantasy land. So if you enjoy blood, gore and mind games, check this baby out!

Ghost Hunt (S1) - I know that I had seen this anime when it was new, but apparently I never saw the final episodes of the season since I had no idea what was going to happen. But glad that I saw this again! Not the scariest or goriest show out there, but it is fun and entertaining. My favorite part is how all the characters get along even though they have different beliefs and ways of dealing with the unknown.

Psycho-Pass (S1 + S2 + 1 movie) - Everybody were recommending this show to me and I understand why. There is detective work, blood/gore, and some kick-ass action; just right for me. However, I am not into all the tech porn (you know - when the put so much time and focus on weapons and other technology when they open up, charge, fire, etc. Not my thing!), but it was still a good anime. The only downside was that I felt very little when characters died, which was strange since I usually get attached very easily and morn fictional characters on a regular basis.

Mayoiga / The Lost Village (S1) - Oh maaan. I was expecting something along the lines of Battle Royale, but this was nothing but a big disappointment. There was so much potential in the first episodes for this to become the next Another or Corpse Party, but nooo. Lack of death aside, I guess it had it´s creepy moments, but the finale was not worth the wait in my opinion. I was actually so upset by the final twist that I sat down and basically created an alternative version of the story. Same basic structure, characters, feel and pitch, but with a more classic psychological horror plot. I would also have put the focus on other characters over the two basic cardboard cutouts (I vote for Valkana and Nanko!).

Corpse Party: Tortured Souls - Bougyakusareta Tamashii No Jukyou (5OVA) - I had seen this before when it first came out, but since I am still in a Halloween mood I decided to give it a re-watch. Totally one of those shows that I cannot look away from (not only because I need the subs, but you know what I mean). Spooky details all over the place blended with intestines and body horror. I may not be a big fan of the Elfen Lied-wannabe character designs, but I would totally watch it a third time when I once again forget the ending. I was so shocked that all I could do was to stare at the screen while the credits passed by.

Mira Nikki / The Future Diary (S1) - That moment you like the premise and concept of a show, but dislike the main characters. Damn that moment. It could be that the English dub makes the protagonists seem more douchey than what they actually are in the oringal Japanese version, or it´s just that they are both written poorly (IMO). But I like the background characters and there is some genuine tension throughout the show, so I watched it all.

Yuri!!! On ICE (S1) - I had been looking forward to this since the first trailer, so it was really really hard for me to wait until all episodes had aired before I had a marathon. But gah! It was worth it! There are no cliffhangers no, but the show just makes you feel so warm and fluffy that you want to see more right away. It is a sports anime, but the characters and relationships are so well developed that I would say to give it a chance even if sports isn’t for you. You will still fall in love with everybody and you just want them all to win gold and be happy!!

PS: Oh dear brother of mine, if you are reading this, be prepared for an anime night next time we meet. You and Jorge will love this! ;D

BONUS:

Kimi No Na Wa / Your Name (movie) - Hands down one of the best MOVIES I have seen this year. Well made, a story that pulls you in, heart-wrenching and beautiful music. This is totally up there amongst Wolf Children and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and I will definitely be showing this to all my friends, no matter if they are into anime or not.

BTS reaction to their girlfriend falling asleep on their shoulder while watching a movie with all the members

Jin:
Jin would turn to talk to you about something going on in the movie to find you fast asleep on his shoulder. He smiled softly, wondering how you fell asleep with all the noise from the rest of the boys. He’d put his arm around you and held you close. “Guys, could you be a bit quieter? I don’t want her waking up.” Jin would ask softly.

Yoongi:
Yoongi himself would start getting sleepy through half the film. He would turn to you to ask you if you wanted to go up to bed with him only to find you asleep. He would chuckle a bit, then scoop you up in his arms. “We’re going to bed. Tell me how the movie ends.”

Hobi:
He would think it was precious. Hobi would be squealing at parts of the movie he liked and tapping your shoulder to make sure you saw. When he didn’t get a reply he looked at you. Wiping the bit of drool from your mouth, he felt a bit bad for being so loud. He laid you down on his lap and kissed your forehead. “Night Night, jagi~. I’ll tell you all about it in the morning~.”

Namjoon:
He would be laughing and talking to everybody as the movie played. Namjoon looked down at you with a huge smile, only for it to get bigger when he saw you sleeping. He kisses your forehead softly and took you upstairs, tucking you in so that you would be away from all the noise. “I’ll be up to cuddle you soon, baby~. Sleep tight.”

Jimin would fall asleep with you. Since you were already asleep, he took you in his arms and cuddles you close. He would start to yawn then slowly close his eyes as your sleepiness rubbed off on him. Holding you tightly, he fell asleep with you. “Goodnight, princess…” he slept with all the noise around you fading away from both of you.

Taehyung:
He would also be pretty loud with Hoseok as the movie was being played. He would laugh loudly and clap his hands. He would feel you jump slightly at the sound of one of his claps. He glanced at you to find you fast asleep on his shoulder. Tae would quickly pull out his phone to take pictures and get the rest of the groups attention. Guys! Isn’t she so cute!?”

Jungkook:
Jungkook would be super into the movie. He would be fully focused on it, until he felt your head slowly sliding forward off his shoulder. He’d look down to find you fast asleep, drool running down your chin. He’d giggle a bit, cover you up and cuddle you until the movie was boring. “You’re adorable, jagi!”

AND REQUESTS HERE

@tayrae515 asked:
Ok so don’t hate me but I had another idea! Could you do one where you are once again Archie’s younger sister and you and Jughead are really close friends so when he became a serpent you were around them a lot and became friends of the serpents and because they take care of there own the offer you a jacket to and Archie and Betty and the gang find out and get upset, they feel like they already lost Juggie and don’t want to lose another friend but you join and idk fluff? Jughead x reader. 💕💕💕

Even with all that crazy stuff following you ever since the death of Jason Blossom, you thought that for once you could have a quiet day. And you did, but not for long. You woke up that morning with your brother, Archie, and his best friend ,and roomate, Jughead jumping on top of you. They were laughing while trying to wake you up to have break fast and go to school with them. As soon as you realised what was going on the two dorks started tickling you and the extreme laughter combined with the extreme ab exersise you were getting by it didn’t really let you talk. “Stop! Stop you are killing me,” you yelled. “DAD! SAVE ME!” You called at him after seeing him standing by the door, admiring the joyfull moment before him. “Hey, boys, enough,” he tried stoping him but the didn’t stop. “Well, you know what they say, Y/N. ‘If you can’t stop them, join them’ .“ “NO!” You screamed as your dad joined the two boys tickling you; more like stabbing you, with their fingers.

“I hate you all,” you said at the two boys sitting in front of you eating breakfast trying to suppress their chuckles. “She’s right, you know,” your father butted in jokingly. “Oh, you don’t talk,” you grumped and went on with your breakfast as the man let out a breathy laugh.

The day seemed to be rather calm. You know, stupid classes, small breaks, lunch with your brother and his friends; in which Jughead would not stop tickling you. You really had no idea why they were like that today but you liked it. As much as you hated to admit you liked it. But, your quiet day came to an end as soon as you walked inside your house with your brother and your close friend short behind you.

As you stepped a foot inside you spotted a woman around the age of your father talking to him. “Hey, guys. This is Ms. Weiss from Social Services. She’s, uh, she’s Jughead’s case worker.” Your father declared as soon as he saw you three. You all seemed shocked and you were. While the boys walked towards the small kitchen you followed close behind. “Jughead, I know how terrible and emotional the last few days have been for you. Your father’s facing serious jail time. Your mom’s over-extended and out of state. We just want to make sure that you’re taken care of.” The woman admitted and Archie butted in , “Well, he can keep staying with us, right, Dad?” Your father simply sent him a sad smile telling him that he already offered. At that moment you knew what was coming. You took Jughead’s arm in your hands and held it firmly, while you later proceeded on hugging it close you your body and interwine your fingers together. He turned his gaze on you for a second smile at the sight of you like this. No, you were not together, not that it would bother you. But Jughead was the person you truly fitten in with. He was quiet and so were you. You were the two members of the little group of friends that would never talk, and when you were it would mostly be between you two and you would be just making sarcastic remarks. “Great, so what’s the problem?” You asked even though you knew the answer.  “It was a DUI. After your mom left. Look, we can talk about this later but between that and my cash flow problem, it knocks me out.” Your father explained as Jughead gave your hand a reasuring squeeze. “There is a family on the Southside that’s offered to foster you. They’re good people, they’ve worked with us before.” The woman added while looking at him. “That doesn’t sound completely horrible.” Jughead reasoned, saying that mostly for you to hear. “It does mean you’ll be in a different school district, Jughead, and you’ll have to transfer schools.” That’s when you lost it. The only person you were comfortable around in school was going to tranfer to the southside. Great, wasn’t that just great?

After leaving them and dashing into your room you were completely unaware of anything else that was said. All you could do was stay in your room and try to calm down a bit. There was a soft knock on the door and without having anytime time to answer the sudden visitor opened the door. “Are you ok?” A person you recognised as Jughead asked. You slowly rearrenge your posistion so you could look at him. “Do I look ok?” you replied with tear stained eyes. “Oh, little one, come here. I’m not gonna be that far away,” he said hugging you close to his body. “I’ll tell you what. I will be staying at my dad’s house, ok? And you will be coming over as frequently as you would like, ok? We could even have sleepovers!” He cheered trying to explain to you that it was not the end of the world. “Yeah, ok. But you will not be there with me at school. How will I do that?” you asked, probably acting like a baby but you didn’t care. “Well, uhm, I could give you my beanie but we both now I won’t,” he said jokingly and making you smlie, “but I will give you one of my flannels. You can wear it on school and it’ll be as if I’m there, yeah?” He said giving you a peck on the forehead. “Good. Want me to sleep here tonight?” he asked and you simply nodded as he started getting comfortable in the bed and pulling you towards his body, embrassing yoy and allowing the heat to warm your small body up in this cold night. “The door stays open,” your father called passing by, always destroying the moment.

It had already been a couple of days ever since Jughead moved to the southside and you spent most of your time there. You would finish school and then you would instantly run to FP’s trailer to meet Jug and today was not going to be any different. The thing was that before that Jughead would come over so you all would go to the Jubilee together and as much as he hated it he did it for you. He walked inside and was stunned after he saw you. You were standing by the kitchen island with your brother and mother. A stunning off-the-shoulder tight-fitted black dress, falling down to your knees. You looked absolutely stunning and Jughead could not hide it. “Oh, Jug’s here,” your mother called and you saw the boy looking at you all. “Jug!” You called and walked up to hug him. “Hey little one,” he said hugging back and giving you a forehead kiss. “Are they a thing?” Your mother asked Archie silently that replied with a disappointed no. “I think we should head off,” your dad said and grabbed his car keys as you all walked to the truck.

After the boring dance was over… Well, it was not so boring. I mean you had Betty’s speach and your brother sing with his current love intrest, and your mum being annoying and a lot more things, but let’s stick to boring. So, after the boring dance was over you and Jughead were going to walk to his father’s trailer, watch a movie and you would then sleep here. And that’s exactly what happened, with a little twist. You made it to your destination and walked inside. Jughead offered you a shirt of his he knew would be huge on you and a pair of his boxers as shorts, knowing that his sweatpants would be enormous on you. You were after all tiny in front of him, but he found that cute. Not that you knew. After putting that on you found Jughead sitting on the couch turning on the TV to find a good movie, and knowing him it would probably be some great old one or a scary movie since he was always amused when you got scared. But his actions were stopped when there was a knock on the door. He walked outside but you didn’t know what happened until you got out as well to see what took him so long and he was wearing his father’s Serpent jacket. When he saw you he seemed scared of your reaction but you took it surprisingly well. You even said that he looked like a very dark version of Clark Kent with the hair and all, or like a younger and more adorable version of Damon Salvatore. After that you continued doing what was on your original plans.

Your brother and his friends were devastated when they saw Jughead walk inside Pop’s wearing his Serpent jacket. Betty was shocked to say the least, while your brother seemed angry, Veronica didn’t think much of it and neither did Kevin so they just kept on making jokes and comments like the ones you did when he was given the jacket. The downside of this was that you were going to have your brother talk about this for a long long time, but you would indeed avoid it as much as possible.

It had been about a week since Jughead became in charge of the southside Surpents, since his father was the ‘leader’ before. But he did have help both from you and a man’s that was second-in-command that took his dad’s place until Jughead came to the southside. Due to that and because you and him seemed to become even closer with everything that happened you spent a lot of time together in the southside, either just walking around and talking, or staying at his house, or some times spending a lot of time in the Whyte Wyrm. Everyone was surprised and you constantly had your brother or father trying to keep you from going there with Jug, but you didn’t seemed to care. The thing is the Serpents accept you as their own, they got your back not matter what. Like that time this girl from your school started calling you names and some of them happened to be around they did everything to protect you from her and make sure you didn’t actually believe everything she said. They even had one of their own stick around you just to make sure you were ok but your brother didn’t know.

One day you all were going to hang out over at Jug’s so you, your brother and the girls were driving there in Archie’s truck. Just as you stepped outside a bunch of Serpents appeared in front of you. Betty got scared, thinking they would attack you or something, since they were told you to stop walking, and she hurried to get Jughead. He walked towards you watching as the second-in-command came over to you and hugged you. “Look,” he began, “we see your friends here are like family to you, you are one of them. But you are family to us and you are one of us. And you know how we take of our own. So we wanted you to know that we will keep on taking care of you, kid. It’s always good when you stick around and, well, we thought you deserve to have this. You deserve to have this cause, as I said you are one of us.” He finished. It was so sweet how much these people cared for you. I mean you grew up with the idea that they are vicious and bad. But they’re not. They are nice people; different people that are under the influence of the stereotypes. You smiled at the man and reached for the jacked but Archie stopped you. “Y/N, no. Don’t you dare. You are not a surpent. You are one of us.” He said. “He’s right, Y/N. You don’t belong with them but with us.” Veronica butted in, agreeing with the stupidity of my brother. “We already lost Jughead to the serpents, little one, we can’t lose you as well,” said Betty adding to the anger that began to boil inside of you. “You are joking right? You don’t mean this stupid things you said.” You mumble. “No, Y/N we’re not,” replied Archie. You looked down for a second contemplaiting what was going on exactly, and then you did what your friends and brother didn’t want you to. You grabbed the jacket from the surpent and wrapped it around your body. After a long time you felt like home. You felt that you truly belonged somewhere. The serpents start cheering on your decision the one that gave you the jacket even hugged you once again. Jughead stared in aw as the two girls with Archie walked inside.

The serpents left and both you and Jughead walked inside meeting a furious Archie, a disappointed Betty and an annoyed Veronica. “What’s wrong with you guys?” You asked trying to understand why they all were like that. “What’s wrong? You ask what’s wrong? Y/N, you are no serpent. You are my sister. They are no good for you.” Archie said pacing up and down the small space. “Arch are you joking? They are amazing people. At least most of them. They treat me like family, they take care of me. They have on of their own to keep an eye on me and make sure I’m safe with all that shit you guys get yourselfs into and drag me into as well.” You fired back at him. “Wow, Y/N, wow.” Betty said looking at you with a very disappointed, almost discussted look. Tears pricked your eyes as this kept going on for a while. “Just don’t come home until you find a way to explain this to dad,” he said in an angry matter. “That’s it. Get out. All of you get out. And don’t come talk to me or her until you stop being irrational.” Jughead yelled, seeing how these words hurt you. You started sobbing in an instand as Archie said that and Jughead pulled you into his arms. Archie tried to apologise but Jug didn’t let him. “I said leave. Now.” He chanted once more since your brother wouldn’t leave. Eventually he did and Jughead picked you up and walked to the couch.

The whole night you spent on that couch. He would say things to calm you down but your tears would not stop. He wouldn’t give up though. He would hold you in his arms stroking your hair and back in attemts to relax you. “It’s ok Y/N. It’s gonna be alright. You can stay here for as long as needed. You know the serpents love you. I love you,” he said. You stopped crying after he said that and you just stared at his face. “Yo-you love me?” You asked surprised. Jug didn’t reply so you took matters in your own hands and you kissed him. You kissed him with so much love you had never shown to anyone. “I love you too,” you uttered before the boy took you in his arms bridal style and run to the bedroom playfully as you laughed. He seemed so happy you said that, so he threw you on the bed and run to the window and opened it. “My little serpent loves me back,” he screamed repeatingly so every one would know.

Dinner Party

Warnings: Smutty, language, and a  good, fun time.

A/N: This was inspired by an episode of Game of Thrones, enjoy!

“I can’t believe you did that!” You shouted as your friends roared with laughter around you.

Harry was hosting a small dinner party for his close friends which, of course, included you.

You had only known him for a short amount of time, maybe six months or so. You had met at a birthday party of his hair stylist, Lou, who also happened to be your boss at BLEACH. Admittedly, you were a little intimidated at first, but that soon subsided when you realized just how sweet he really was. You had your fair share of celebrity clients at the salon, but being around them so often still took some getting used too.

Nick, a mutual friend of both you and Harry, had just finished telling an absurd story about the first festival he had attended which included sex, drugs, and rock n roll.

“Swear to it.” Nick held his hands up in surrender.

“You’re absolutely fucking insane.” Harry quipped up as he laughed.

Warnings: heights, panic attack, language, fluff, sad stuff. Let me know if I missed any.

A/N: Alrrright guys, hopefully this turns out okay. I was thinking about making this into a series depending on how much you guys dig it. If you do, then I will post all about what I’m going to do for the series to see if you guys are interested. Sound good? As always, feedback is definitely appreciated. I never get any, so I don’t know what I’m doing wrong or right. Enjoy!

Ever since Peter told you he was the big ‘ol Spiderman, it felt like your guys’ weekly hangouts and movie nights were coming to an end. Of course you understand that he’s saving the world and stopping the bad guys, but it leaves you worried and afraid for his well being. He always seems distracted around you and it fills you with a darkness. Telling Peter would make you seem selfish, so you bury it, hoping it won’t poke its way through.

Being the shy, reserved, person you are, you definitely had difficulty talking to Peter, especially since you’ve always had a never ending crush on him. After a while of trying to ask him if he could hang out, you stopped. It wasn’t worth the pain of going through to only be rejected once again.

However, what you didn’t know was that Peter noticed you putting up your walls again. He didn’t want to lose you and decided he was definitely going to do something about it. Starting tonight

TOM HOLLAND X READER

He opened his eyes to see the white bedding against his skin. Tom squinted against the morning light as he shuffled between the sheets, careful not to wake you. The countless disasters that he created by doing that, he knew not to wake you until after a certain point. As he got up, his skin prickled with the lack of warmth your body radiated from under the covers, he twisted, looking over his shoulder down at you. Sleeping soundly, hair ruffled, your features soft and warm. Comfortable and safe. You face was lit up due the orange sun shining through the curtains. He couldn’t help but smile. His heart bled for you, for every giggle and every hug and every kiss. Tom couldn’t imagine harming you.

   But he did.

Four months later, during the filming of Homecoming, you decided to surprise him. You hadn’t seen each other in months, so you thought it could raise some spirits, put the smile on your face that he was recently lacking the ability to do. The last time you talked, on a cell phone even, was a month ago. It was silent. All you ever got was his same old voice mail or a dry text about he was busy and he wished you good night. You didn’t bother texting Harrison or Jacob, you didn’t even have contact with Zendaya.

You were tired of this. Maybe this visit would rekindle the relationship. You could only hope. You sat down on the plush bed in Tom’s house that he rented in Atlanta while filming. It was nice, it had a large outdoor space and a modern kitchen, the living room stacked with movies you both love to binge occasionally. You gazed longingly at a photo of the two of you, you were laughing at some cheesy joke he had made while he was staring at you. You could see the love in his eyes, and you couldn’t help but wonder if he still did look at you this way. You heard that the spark of long-term relationships eventually ran out. But it was you and Tom, an undeniable force to be reckoned with. The both of you agreed on mostly everything, and there was never a dull moment. You both knew when to stop and when to start, what was right and what was wrong. He fit into your heart like a puzzle piece, and he had permanently glued himself there. But now… the glue was cracking and soon as you realized this you were on a plane within seconds.

Toms place was like your home back in England, where you had moved in with him two years ago after dating him while you were going through your first-year college and decided to make the leap after a year of countless dates and safety hugs. You thought maybe he was the one, and you sure were set on that after you moved in together. But now looking back on it you realized you were young, and maybe, just maybe, you could’ve pushed yourself too much on him. Maybe, just maybe, you were wrong.

    “(Y/N),” Tom said in disbelief.

You dropped the frame in fright. You had zoned out, not even hearing him come in. You swore softly under your breath as you looked down at your feet where smashed glass and a broken metal frame laid on the wooden floors. You scowled, ignoring the mess, your only focus on him.

You watched as he dropped his keys on a table beside the door and kick his shoes off, but he stopped dead in his tracks when he saw the look on your face. He hadn’t smiled when he saw you like you had hoped. There was no cliche run, no bone breaking hug, no fit of giggles as he peppered kisses into your neck.

    “What’s wrong?”

There was no darling, no love, no pet name that came along with that sentence.

“I don’t think I can do this anymore.”

It’s been a month since you had broken up with him. It’s been a month since he’s finished the movie. It’s been a month since he’s been back in England since he’s moved back to his loft to find all your belongings gone with a yellow sticky note with your handwriting on it. I moved out and I’m now living with (Y/B/F). If you find anything of mine text me.

God, what had he done. The one he loved so deeply, cared so much for, his one in a gazillion, his soulmate; he had pushed you away. He fought hard to push tears back as he crumpled up the note and threw it in the trash next to your relationship. He scrubbed the floors clean, washed everything to get rid of anything left of you. But when he was finished, his nose burning from chemical fumes, he could still smell the sweet perfume he had bought for you birthday last year lingering in the bathroom or on your side of the bed. He had been so frustrated that he threw out the mattress and had Harrison go shopping with him the next day to buy a new one.

Harrison hadn’t said anything about the breakup yet and Tom was glad for it. Although he could see the pity from his best friends eyes, so he would drag him out everywhere he went. It wasn’t even necessary for Tom to get over you, it was for Tom to stop thinking about it. Harrison knew Tom believed it was his fault, but he knew that the distance was a two sided road that ended usually in a sharp drop off.

So that where Tom was right now, sitting in a coffee shop staring blankly out the window while Harrison went on about some story he went through when he saw some old friends yesterday. He wasn’t listening, especially not when he saw the familiar blue cardigan walking across the street. His back went ramrod straight, his hand shaking so much that he almost dumped all his tea over his pants.

“What?” Harrison questioned at Tom’s tight appearance.

“She’s with someone else,” His voice croaked.

“What?!” Harrison basically yelled as he leaned across the table to see where Tom was staring.

And he was right. There you were, wearing one of his favourite outfits on you. Soft blue cardigan, charcoal grey blouse with a small ruffled neckline, dark jeans, and black boots. His heart hammered in his chest, threatening to break out at the sight of you, holding someone else’s hands.

He watched as you twisted to look up at the man, extremely tall, dark haired, stubble, leather jacket and twinkling smile. Tom set the tea on the table and excused himself to the bathroom. Harrison, once again, didn’t say anything. Tom stalked to the restrooms at the back, locking himself in the single stall and stared at himself in the mirror. His hands gripped the basin of the sink, knuckles turning white at the pressure. His teeth clenched as he dared another look into the mirror. But all he saw was you smiling at the other man. The other man that should be him.

    You looked happy.

He wondered if that’s what you looked like when you saw him. If you were bursting with happiness that emitted a light so pure. The light, the laugh, the teasing pushes, he missed it. There was a knock on the door.

“Tom… You alright, mate?” It was Harrison.

“Yeah!” He said too quickly, blinking away the forming tears. “Yeah, I’m good. I’ll be out in a sec’.”

You had the right to be happy. You had the right to be with someone new. He had hurt you, he had left you alone and never tried to fix what he broke. And he still loved you. He knew he always would. Who could forget you? You were brilliant, astonishing, breathtaking.

He could picture the first time he met you, how you were a nervous bundle of tears because you had gotten lost in the city and were scared of missing your first class. You were lucky he found you, lucky he ignored the tears and did not pity you for them. Simply, he held your books, walked a little too closely beside you and showed you to class. The whole twenty minutes of it was him talking, then occasionally you offered a sarcastic comment. Afterwards, you kissed him on the cheek, and he had never blushed so much in his life.

He wondered if the person you were with now felt the same. If he had butterflies in his stomach whenever you spoke, or if his heart rate jumped whenever you complimented him. Maybe he hugged her, maybe she kissed him. Maybe it was your first date since the breakup. And if it was, you looked happy to get over it. That’s what he should be doing. Getting over you. But how could he do that when you still were glued deeply into his heart. The puzzle piece that fit perfectly.

With a sniffle, Tom shook his head, his hair shaking out of its style slightly, he exited the restroom. He found Harrison outside, holding a scone in a white paper bag while he scrolled through Instagram on his phone. Tom cleared his throat to catch his attention. Harrison looked up, blinked slightly at Tom’s shaken features and engulfed him in a hug.

“Hey, it’ll happen to you too one day. Don’t you worry.”

What if Tom didn’t want it to happen. What if he wanted you back. He missed every inch of your skin, your over sugary tea, your grandmother’s secret pancake recipe. But most of all he just wanted to hold you in his arms, at least one last time. Maybe that would make him happy.

They walked towards Harrison’s flat, the gloomy grey sky matching Tom’s mood perfectly. He busied himself with looking at his shoes, the ones you loved oh so much. How you had to practically beg him to buy them. Now, look at him, how he walked comfortably in them. He remembered the other things you loved. Like the cat sitting on the windowsill on his left, or how the owners fed their pet too much that he was fat. They passed more and more and with every step Tom regretting coming to get tea with his best friend at all.

Everything he saw reminded himself of you. The little-checkered table cloth inside a cheap restaurant that you both found each other in after the first run into each other. Hours inside that bar, and a few later accompanied by drinks he found himself in bed with you. Weeks and weeks of dates and flowers, you didn’t have a favourite because you didn’t want to hurt the flowers feelings, chocolate especially. Tom went through the movies he wouldn’t be able to watch anymore, or at least for a while because that was your thing. More and more memories crashed down upon him as he walked beside Harrison, who was quietly munching on the scone that was supposed to be saved for breakfast tomorrow morning.

He regretted it. He regretted losing you. He would give anything, his career even, just to be with you again. But it would never happen. He fucked up.

And he hated you. Not for going out with someone new. No, he hated you for still being there, no matter where he went because he knew you would always be in his heart.

I knew one day you’d fall for someone new. But if he breaks your heart like lovers do, just know that I’ll be waiting here for you.

You were just finishing up writing a mission report late at night-given you arrived an hour prior from said mission-, in extreme detail since Nick was upset that you left out what weapon you used to kill a guard last time. He was surprised when you held up your dominate hand with a shrug. So, if he wanted details, he was gonna get them. As you typed away, Tony was to your left, sorting through old files. He was moving them into the new safe Nick had brought in, when he let out a rather loud and long yawn.

A smirk formed on your lips as you looked up from your laptop. Tony was sitting in a swivel chair, stacking old manila file folders on the ground. “It’s not even ten-thirty, and you’re already tired?” You shook your head, mocking him. Nick wanted him to sit the mission out and do this for him instead.

He scoffed and glared at you, sighing heavily. “I’ve been moving these files all day long! And he wanted to organize them by year, and some of them aren’t even dated!” He complained, groaning in frustration.

You tapped your thumbs against your laptop as you thought to yourself. You were nearly finished with your report and Tony did look tired. Pursing your lips, you turned to look back at Tony. “I’m almost done here, why don’t I finish that up?” You offered with a small smile. Tony whipped around to face you with a shocked expression. “Who are you and what have you done to Y/N?” He asked with caution, crossing his arms.

Your eyes nearly rolled out of their sockets. “You have ten seconds flat to leave the room or I withdraw my offer.” You began typing on your laptop again, laughing softly to yourself when you heard his shoes squeak against the floor, his speedy steps echoing as he ran out of the room.

After half an hour later of typing your mission report, you sent it in an email to Nick. You sighed and cracked your knuckles, stretching your arms above your head. Your body was sore from the mission and your eyes had grown tired, but you told Tony you’d finish the files.

Walking over to the stack he left on the ground, you picked them up and brought them over, tossing them down onto the table. A white square envelope slid out of the top folder, a shiny disc catching your eye. Your eyebrows creased with confusion and you grabbed it, flipping it around to look for a name or any piece of information that told you what was on here. You opened the envelope, only to find that the disc was plain, too.

You were always a curious person. Almost everyone in the tower had trouble with accepting that, but you couldn’t find it in you to care. It was in your personality to be curious. And that’s why you sat down in your chair and slid the disc into your laptop.

Biting your lip, your cursor hovered over the play button. What if this was something bad, something terribly horrid, something you’d never be able to un-see. You’d dream of it, think of it, and have so many questions. Or what if it was the long-lost embarrassing drunken karaoke video of Sam and Tony at Bucky’s birthday party?

You quickly pressed play and sat back, anxiously waiting for it to start.

You realized that this was not the latter as you saw darkness, The camera shook a little bit as it showed a brightly lit room - or rather a lab of sorts. Suddenly voices started coming into the room.

One by one, a group of men came into frame. Men with lab coats. Your stomach churned and your fingers shook as you heard Bucky’s voice. “Stop! Don’t do this! I knew him!” The camera was shakily aimed at him and you could see him struggling against them. They were dragging him towards a large chair and shoved him down. You knew you needed to stop watching. But you couldn’t look away. Not now.

Bucky had a thousand yard stare, as if everything about him and his life was rushing back and he knew he’d lose it soon. A few seconds later, he was out of control and shoving a guard away from him; he was angry and unstable. You looked away and bit your trembling lip as your finger hovered over the power button, but when you heard more footsteps, you willed yourself to look again.

“Mission report.”

Alexander Pierce was there, leaning down in front of Bucky, his hand whipping out to slap Bucky in the face. The camera had a muffled sound from the person shaking so much. You figured this wasn’t actually supposed to be filmed, or it was and the person was extremely afraid to be around Bucky, or in this case, The Winter Soldier.

Your eyes filled with tears as you watched Bucky look at Pierce. He looked hopeless, he was tired and you could see a spark of fear behind his eyes as he spoke. “But I knew him.” His eyes held so much emotion, something you didn’t see when he first arrived at the tower. It took him a few months to even come out of his room when everyone else was awake. After that, it took a year to get him back to as normal as he could be, given everything that happened.

One more year, and you two were happily together. You both had grown close to each other, you helped him with his nightmares and he always stitched you up, both of you taking bullets for each other. Though the two of you were unstoppable on the field, working together like it was meant to be.

“Wipe him.”

Those words brought you out of your thoughts and your breath picked up as you watched two men push Bucky’s back against the chair, his hair framing his face. You realized your were gripping the edge of the table when your hand started to hurt from the pressure. Tears filled your eyes as you watched them stick a mouth guard in front of him. He accepted it; he knew he wouldn’t be able to fight back.

The machine came to life and his chair leaned backwards, the electric headpiece coming around towards Bucky’s head. It fired up and you saw his chest rise and fall before he started to scream, the machine shocking him. A sob escaped your lips and your hand flew up, covering your mouth as you cried into it. He continued to scream, his voice breaking and the sound of his metal arm fighting against the restraints shot right through you.

You slammed the laptop shut and squeezed your eyes tightly, but all you could see was Bucky’s face behind your lids. You’d only heard bits and pieces about Bucky’s life with Hydra.

Now that you’ve seen it with your own eyes, it was something you’d never want to see again.

Two weeks have passed since you watched Bucky’s torture video. You’ve become silent almost, timid around anyone. Telling Bucky about watching the video wasn’t something you wanted to bring up. But you knew he could tell that something was wrong.

He watched you from the door, your fingers typing on your laptop as you wrote out another mission report. It’s taken you longer than usual because you kept thinking about the video. You noticed you were typing out the details from said video instead of the mission you and the team went on, and you groaned, backspacing two sentences.

“Y/N, you need to rest.” Bucky’s voice startled you and you looked up from your screen. You swallowed nervously and let out a shaky breath. “I need to finish the miss-an email.” ‘Mission report’ suddenly sounded like a terrible set of words to use, despite Bucky’s mind being cleared for the most part.

Bucky sighed and walked into the room. He stood behind you and let his hands rest on your shoulders. You melted into his touch and your lip trembled when you felt the coolness on your left shoulder. Everything you’ve been holding in finally came out. “Bucky..” Your voice broke and you tried to hold back your sobs, but it was useless. He quickly turned your chair to the side and bent down onto his knees in front of you.

“Y/N, what’s wrong?” His eyebrows creased with worry and his hands grasped your cheeks. You couldn’t form the words, you could only cry. Bucky felt his throat tighten at seeing you like this, your eyes filled with tears and the hiccups coming from your throat.

He wiped your tears as they fell, giving you time to catch your breath before speaking again. “Y/N, are you okay?” He asked softly, moving his hand to yours, caressing your skin with his thumb. You sniffled and took a deep breath, huffing it out as you let your eyes fall to his metal hand in yours. You weren’t scared, you weren’t angry; just seeing him like that broke your heart.

“I need to tell you something, but I don’t want you to be mad at me.” You sobbed again and Bucky stood to his feet, picking you up out of the chair bridal style, so he could sit in with you in his lap. He shushed you softly, cradling your head on his shoulder. “Doll, you’re makin’ me nervous. Please, tell me.” He pleaded softly, looking down at you.

Wiping your cheeks, you took another breath. “I watched a video.” You whispered quietly, hoping he missed it. But he heard you clearly and his heart jumped in his chest. He knows exactly what video you’re talking about.

He was silent as he gathered his thoughts. Your heart sank as the minutes ticked by without a word from him. Right when you opened your mouth, he did the same, only he could use his voice. “I’m not mad at you, Doll. I wish you hadn’t seen me like that, though.” He held you closer, pressing his lips to your head.

You sat up in his lap and looked into his eyes. The looked sad and he had light circles underneath them. Your hand rested on his cheek and you caressed it. “You’ve come a long way, I know that. But seeing it, it broke my heart all over again, Bucky.” Your lip trembled and Bucky reached up to rub it with his thumb.

“Hey,” He met your eyes and leaned in to press his lips to yours. The kiss was short but sweet. “It won’t happen again; I’m confident about that now. I have such an amazing team and girlfriend that will make sure of it.” Bucky let his metal hand cradle your cheek. Even touching you with it was proof that he’s one hundred percent sure he’s okay.

You smiled sadly at him. You sighed and played with your thumbs for a few moments. “I was hoping it was that embarrassing video of Sam and  Tony, singing horribly at karaoke night on your birthday.” You admitted bashfully. Bucky suddenly laughed, which caused your heart to soar at the sound.

Bucky’s laughs calmed and he stood up with you in his arms still, leading you out of the room. You let your head rest against his chest. “Where are we going?” You asked softly, playing with the ends of his hair. “Always so curious.” He chuckled deeply, the action causing his chest to vibrate against your side.

“Well?” You looked up at him, raising your eyebrows expectantly. He stepped into the elevator and a smirk formed on his lips.

“To watch that exact video.”

A Series of Unfortunate Events : the recipe to a good adaptation

This is a short analysis of the recent adaptation A Series of Unfortunate Events by Netflix. I will not mention everything here, it would require much more time and analysis but here is a general appreciation. Careful for spoilers !

Adaptations are quite tricky to accomplish because being true to the original work while bringing novelty to the piece is not so easy. The best adaptations are often the ones that manage to channel the spirit of the original work. A Series of Unfortunate Events is a very successful example of this. It was already visible in the first trailer where Lemony Snicket actually walks on the set of the filming to tell us not to watch this series. Right here, you have three core elements of the original series : our narrator-character, the breaking of the fourth-wall and the plea not to look into this horrific story. That last element actually is a known way to catch the reader/viewer’s attention and make him want to know more.

When it comes to A Series of Unfortunate Events, the character of Lemony Snicket is crucial. Therefore the adaptation needs to be perfectly true to his features. As a child, I really believed Lemony Snicket was this mysterious author hidding from malevolent authorities. The fact that Lemony is actually out of the story ,since he is the author/narrator, and a full part of it builds the whole myth around this series.
When I saw the movie, I did not get that feeling of mystery around Lemony mainly because it is not cleary explicited that he is part of all this : the viewer doesn’t see on-screen any important hint that Lemony is a central character of the story, he is presented above all as the writer.
In the Netflix series, Lemony is the first person the viewer visually encounters, just like in the books. The fact that you can see him entirely makes him a reassuring presence throughout the show : he is your guide. The show stages this aspect very cleverly by blending Lemony in the situations the Baudelaires find themselves in, usually through his costume.

Thanks to this process, the narrator’s role is fully depicted. A narrator that addresses directly to the reader/viewer is usually out of the story and Lemony is indeed “out” since he is telling the events. But Lemony is also “in” as an important character. The show drops hints along the way which keep getting bigger gradually : his investigation, the letters to Beatrice, the fact that he is being chased, among other things, and of course the reveal of the picture with Olaf in the last episode.

All these proofs show that Lemony really is involved in this story. It is very fortunate that they kept the dedications to Beatrice at the beginning of each segment of the story because she is the one who ties Lemony to the story. She actually acts as his muse, she is the main reason why he writes, the name Beatrice being a reference to Dante’s own muse.
Since he is an « in-between » character, literally the bridge between you and the story, Lemony is the one who constantly breaks the fourth-wall. This aspect is so crucial in A Series of Unfortunate Events. It allows Lemony to act as the antic chorus or Prologue : “If you are interested in stories with happy endings, you would be better off reading some other book. In this book, not only is there no happy ending, there is no happy beginning and very few happy things in the middle.” (The Bad Beginning).
With those few lines, the essence of the plot is completely laid before your eyes, just like the ancient tragedies. In the series, apart from those lines, the opening song has the exact same role : “Every single episode is nothing be dismay.”
The breaking of the fourth-wall is also at the core of both series because story-telling mecanisms are explained through it. In the Reptile Room, Lemony explains the dramatic irony which is then again an aspect of the antic tragedies. As I remember it, the book series crossed the fourth-wall to teach something to the reader : a word, writing techniques and less straightforwardly, literary references. All these elements were fortunately brought into the show as well.

Now Lemony is mainly the one to break the wall, as allowed by his narrator status. What is unsettling for the viewer is when Count Olaf breaks it, usually to advertise the TV show and stare at the camera for a couple of seconds. This leads to the other important aspect of an adaptation : the creativity. The writers did not only represent Olaf, they actually add depths according to the new medium : what would Olaf do if he was in a TV series ? Break the fourth-wall and sing its opening sequence !

A short word on the amazing cast, especially Neil Patrick Harris who pulled out a very good Count Olaf. This character is very complex to play, he needs the right amount of villainy, humor and the talent of an actor who can play a character playing other characters. Jim Carrey brought too much of his own eccentricity to the character and you saw more of the actor than of the character. Neil Patrick Harris really understood and nailed all of Olaf’s facets.

Hence adaptations would be rather dull without creativity and novelty.
Sure a lot of dialogues are actually taken word by word from the books because they are good as they are but an adaptation needs to adapt precisely even more when the media is different.

A book and a  TV show are of course very different mainly because of the images. In a book, a description can only be completed by the reader’s imagination. In a show, what you see allows very little space for imagination. This is why a successful adaptation is one that can get the spirit, the ambiance of the world, conveyed by the original words, and transcripts it on screen. From the language of worded images to the language of filming.

The unsettling ambiance, the faded colours and surreal pastel imagery are very fitting for the Baudelaires’ story. The main aspect of the series is its dark humor and stories that you find rarely in children’s book : one death if not more per book, usually a gruesome one. The TV show manages to render the baudelairian world : this very specific atmosphere, the feeling of being oppressed by all the places in which the Baudelaires find themselves.

Finally the most important aspect of an adaptation is that it must appeal to all audiences. What is complicated about making adaptations is that they are received by two different audiences : the one who knows the original material and the one who doesn’t and their first interaction with the original universe is through the adaptation.
That’s why getting the atmosphere right is so important, it shows the specificities of the work in another way which should not “betray” the original story.
An adaptation is full of references that will be immediately recognized only by the ones familiar with the original piece. These references show the adaptors love for the original work and also creates a complicity between them and the well-aware viewer. Which book lover did not scream at the sugar bowl in episode 2 or at those four simple words : the world is quiet here ?The beauty of references is that they are hidden, they could be seen as completely normal by an unaware viewer : the scene of the sugar bowl seems very innocent.

It allows the adaptors to play on what the reader already knows. Take the first appearance of the Quagmire mother and father: most of the book readers thought them to be the Baudelaire mother and father even though they know very well it is impossible. This builds up until the revelation in the first part of the Miserable Mill. Not only this plays with the well-aware reader but also stages already the Quagmire trio and most of their backstory. Being already intertwined since the first episode with the main story, they meet naturally at the end of the season and do not appear previously unmentionned like in the books.

As thrilling as this is, if the adaptation is only met for the experts, it won’t be a total success. An adaptation also needs to speak to new viewers who have no knowledge of the original work. This is why there is a need for balance of references so the newcomer will not spent his time on Wikipedia trying to figure out what happens. How the series introduced right away the Quagmires is actually rather clever : it allows the newcomer not to be lost in all the key characters.

Lastly, this show really catches the core humor of the original work by playing on the fact that it is an adaptation and therefore needs to depart sometimes from the original sequences. At the beginning of the Miserable Mill (episode 8), Mr. Poe freaks out because the Baudelaires are gone and in the middle of his panicked speech, he says : “It’s off-book !’. And indeed it is, because in the books the Baudelaires don’t go to Lucky Smells Lumbermill by themselves but are brought there by Mr Poe. An adaptation makes choices and the show plays on that aspect.

Of course, this show would need a 300 pages-long essay because of all the references and allusions not only to literature but also foreshadowing the main story. This show completely smashes the movie adaptation which did not manage to really transcript well neither the atmosphere nor the characters.

Remember, an adaptation is not a search of perfection because it will never be exactly like the original material. The change of medium requires changes in the story and the story-telling. The intelligence with which the choices are made makes all the difference between a good and a bad adaptation.

My other friend who is also a Gruvia shipper send me this pic after I beg for hours (since I didn’t go to watch the special screen with her because of works) T^T It’s the scene when Juvia got hurt.

She added “Their moment is not really romantic but SUPER CUTE!!!” (She shouted from the phone) Juvia hugged Gray but he just complained like ‘what is wrong with you’ but didn’t push her away so yeah some development. The ending song was the scene that every ships (Nalu Gruvia Gajevy + Erza + Wendy) stand beside each other and holding their wooden beer mug. Gruvia stands next to each other and they were so closeeeeee, both their bodies and their beer mugs.(Actually she said there was 0% distance between their bodies) and they both smiled to the camera.  She liked the scene when after the fight that Juvia got hurt and Gray ran to her and asked ‘Are you okay’. She said that his voice was really gentle and sounds like he care so much about her.   can see how much he care about her by seeing his face. There was also a scene that Gray thought or sensed about Juvia. (She called it 'Juvia sensor’) “

and yeahhhh I think this is my last submission. I think I will go see it myself on 13th and I will tell you all the gruvia details !!!

Thank you so much for the information and picture submission! I see this is the part where Juvia throws herself in front of the little girl and takes the attack. That’s where Gray screams her name and goes devil slayer mode for his bae. ;)

I know Juvia will be almost entirely comedy in this movie, and that’s fine. It’s been a long time since she’s acted that way, and the Japanese LOVE IT (again, difference in Japanese and Western culture). All the tweets say she’s super cute. I also like that Gray’s main fight (his only one, really) is with Juvia.

I saw the ending credit photo actually, so I know what you’re talking about. The person who shared told me not to post it, as they themselves unfortunately weren’t allowed to either. But YES. It’s ADORABLE. We see Nalu, Gruvia, and Gajevy–their arms around their girls. Gray’s face is leaning into Juvia’s hat and he’s smiling. xD So this is the picture the Japanese were excited about. It’s a group shot.

Despite Gruvia being a comedic aspect of the movie, I’m glad we can really see how much he does care for her. That’s their dynamic in the manga too, we know Gray loves Juvia. ^^ Even when they’re married, Gray will still make faces when Juvia is acting like…. Juvia. lol.

Jay Baruchel & Alfred Molina

Just another ‘messing around’ post :P

I watched this 2010 movie ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ yesterday, and I was thrilled that I found a Jay-Alfred confrontation scene just like in the RTTE!

(If you haven’t watched the movie and you want to check it out yourself, please skip my post, since the pictures below may spoil the movie to some degree…)

Dave Stutler & Maxim Horvath in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

Hiccup Haddock & Viggo Grimborn in Race to the Edge

Thus, when I saw Horvath asking Dave for the Grimhold, it was all Viggo asking Hiccup for the Dragon Eye…

Also…

Horvath kidnapped Dave’s girlfriend Becky…

Viggo kidnapped Hiccup’s girlfriend Astrid…

When the villains were defeated, Dave and Becky kissed…

When the dragon hunters were defeated, Hiccup and Astrid kissed…

EVERYTHING’S JUST SO FAMILIAR!!! Such an interesting discovery XD
