Someone suggested that Rick might have listened to Carl and Michonne's conversation in 4x16, when she told him not to be afraid of his dad, the details about what happened at her camp, and the whole "I was a monster/I'm a monster, too". Do you think it's plausible? I had the impression he was too far away to heat what they were saying. I think he knows about the cat and stuff because he observed her and payed attentions to certain details. That's why I think he realized Michonne might have been-
-a mother way before she told him (if she did. But I think she did). I imagine she opened up during those two months off screen, maybe during a Rick’s emotional breakdown while blaming himself for being a bad father. I’ve always imagined her saying he was, instead, a great father because he fought for his children’s life and kept them alive unlike other fathers… And the she opened up.
Yeah, ever since Michonne told Carl about Andre, I clung to the idea that she would tell Rick around the time of Carl getting shot, something along the lines of what you described. And since we didn’t see those two months, I still imagine that to be true. Although it also could’ve been at any point while they were on the road headed to Washington. I’m sure they spent a lot of sleepless nights together. Either way, I do think Rick knows because Michonne told him; and having observed her with his kids, he probably wasn’t particularly surprised to hear it. (When I asked Danai about it, she also thought, because of the intimacy between them, that she’s probably told him by now.)
As far as the conversation the morning of Terminus, I agree that he was probably too far away to hear them. I wouldn’t say it’s impossible, but if that’s what they were trying to relay, I think it would’ve actually been addressed by now. The look Rick gave them seemed, to me, more about feeling like Carl was pulling away from him because of what he’d done the night before. So yeah, it was probably a lot easier to notice the cat sculpture, which had likely been sitting in her cell for months. He probably saw that thing more than he saw Michonne, lol.
