Good to Me (And I’d Be So Good to You) by AWickedMemory (ReadyPlayerZero) Words:8905

Everyone returns to Hogwarts after the war, but nothing is quite the same. Harry’s groupies are creepier than ever, Ron and Hermione are snogging all over the place, and the once-proud Draco is shuffling around like a kicked puppy. But that’s okay: Harry’s got a plan.

A simple prayer

Njord, hostage who traveled far from your home to carve out a new life among those that bore arms against you, Hear my prayer.

Help me be aware and awake in my city and land, to protect those who are like you were, strangers in a new land hostile to them.

Strengthen me to be as many Aesir were to you, giving hospitality and power to those who have traveled to this shore, let it be theirs.

Safeguard them through these storms to come, and offer them safe passage and safe harbor when needed most, by your name.

Aphrodite,
Relaxes upon her silk bed.
As Eros joins her,
And lays upon her breast.

The two lay together,
and cuddle each other.
As Aphrodite combs his wings,
He smiles up to his mother.

And the two together
Enjoy this gentle moment.

Me & Jack Kerouac

The first time I ever heard the name Jack Kerouac I was fifteen years old and my dad was cracking a joke about my friend James Thiede who wanted to take a bus to California: “you guys want to be Jack Kerouac now huh?” I had never heard the name but man somehow right after hearing that I did want to be Jack Kerouac. Or at least know who he was. The name alone–the rhyme, the funny French vowels in the surname, it just sounds endearing. So I checked out On the Road from the Redford library. It turns out it was the perfect time in my life to come across him, I was going into my junior year of high school that fall which meant that my friends had licenses for the first time (I didn’t get mine until I was seventeen), which then in turn meant everyone was able to really start partaking in the activities high schoolers tend to partake in at night. Just by nature of having cars suddenly the world seemed so open to adventure. In retrospect many of these “adventures” have certainly been romanticized by nostalgia, after all driving around from parking lot to parking lot smoking pot after football games and drinking your parents’ weird liqueurs while listening to Built to Spill in the back of a minivan isn’t exactly Treasure Island, but reading Jack Kerouac made it all feel the more fantastic (in the most literal “of fantasy” sense). Reading Jack Kerouac that fall was the first time in my life my eyes were really opened to how fiction can make the mundane magical, how with just the slightest bit of imaginative perspective the everyday world could be transformed into the sublime. I was sixteen reading this book about this guy riding around with friends getting high and drunk “in the American night” looking for something to give life meaning and purpose and here I was doing the same thing for the first time. And for the first time in my life I saw fiction not as just entertainment or a window into some other world but also as some weird sort of funhouse mirror that could reflect life and refract it back upon itself in ways that made it seem more beautiful, more full of purpose. Reading Jack Kerouac meant that suddenly eating cheeseburgers in the glow of a diner at night could be beatific, and that drinking beer in an apartment while listening to records with friends could have the potential for religious experience.

Of course a lot of this is me being sixteen and having the sort of dopey, romantic feelings sixteen-year-olds have, but those are exactly the sort of feelings Kerouac plays too, he finds what Springsteen referred to as the “waltz between what’s flesh and what’s fantasy.” His perspective was so childlike and wondrous that he saw his life not only as adventure and material for fiction but also as part of this big intertextual tapestry of American history and literature. He sees Steinbeck characters in the faces of lunch cart cooks, sees the rolling land of America as the result of Paul Bunyan’s axe and other folk mythologies. The American landscape is one giant Thomas Hart Benton mural through Kerouac’s eyes. And so when reading Kerouac, I began to do the same as him- projecting the history of American fiction onto my reality- seeing Dean Moriarty and Carlo Marx in the faces of friends I was having my own nocturnal American adventures with.

I know for a lot of people it’s the bebop rhythm of his writing (“glug a slug from the jug”) or the spontaneous prose approach he had borrowed from the modernists and placed in a jazz improvisation context– writing full sized novels in weeks at a time holed up in bathrooms on Benzedrine—but for me it’s less about the form and process and more about his mood and tone. It’s that aforementioned childlike wonder that really gets me with Kerouac, the romance he finds in simple scenes like eating beans and hot dogs over a fire while hopping trains in The Dharma Bums, or finding redemption from his downward spiral into alcoholism through something as kind of simple and naïve as looking at the stars in his backyard at the end of Big Sur (“on soft spring nights I’ll stand in the yard under the stars, something good will come from all things yet, and it will be golden and eternal just like that”). Perhaps the best example is the famous closing passage of On the Road. After following an over three-hundred-page journey that spans several years of traveling coast to coast across America all through his eyes he tracks the camera back to a bird’s eye view of America, and in one giant paragraph-sized sentence he paints the entire country going to bed:

“So in America when the sun goes down and I sit on the old broken-down river pier watching the long, long skies over New Jersey and sense all that raw land that rolls in one unbelievable huge bulge over to the West Coast, and all that road going, and all the people dreaming in the immensity of it, and in Iowa I know by now the children must be crying in the land where they let the children cry, and tonight… the evening star must be drooping and shedding her sparkler dims on the prairie, which is just before the coming of complete night that blesses the earth, darkens all the rivers, cups the peaks and folds the final shore in, and nobody, nobody knows what’s going to happen to anybody besides the forlorn rags of growing old, I think of Dean Moriarty, I even think of Old Dean Moriarty the father we never found, I think of Dean Moriarty.”

He’s also at his best when his writing appeals directly to the senses. Short of Hemingway I don’t think I’ve read anyone who’s better at writing about food, from the apple pie in On the Road (“it was getting better as I got deeper into Iowa, the pie bigger, the ice cream richer”) to the breakfast he cooks for himself in The Railroad Earth:

“and make raisin toast by sitting it on a little wire I’d specially bent to place over the hotplate, the toast crackled up, there, I spread margarine on the still red hot toast and it too would crackle and sink in the golden, among burnt raisins and this was my toast. Then two eggs gently slowly fried in soft margarine in my little skidrow frying pan about half as thick as a dime in fact less, a little piece of tiny tin you could bring on a camp trip—the eggs slowly fluffed in there and swelled from butter steams and I threw garlic salt on them and when they were ready the yellow of them had been slightly filmed with a cooked white at the top from the tin cover I’d put over the frying pan, so now they were ready, and out they came, I spread them out on top of my already prepared potatoes which had been boiled in small pieces and then mixed with the bacon I’d already fried in small pieces, kind of raggedly mashed bacon potatoes, with eggs on top steaming, and on the side lettuce, with peanut nearby on side.”

This is the stuff that I love. It’s so simple. The guy devotes an entire page long paragraph to the breakfast he cooks for himself. That appetite too. You read that and suddenly you’re hungry, he’s great at that type of thing. If Kerouac writes about bowling, suddenly you want to go bowling.

Now I also should say there’s also a lot to Kerouac’s oeuvre that hasn’t exactly held up for me in the last seven years since I first read him, and specifically a lot of what I don’t like is directly connected to what I love so much. There are times for me when his childlike wonder and optimism can drift into the proto-hippy abstract a little too much, times when I wish Jack would kind of see the world through more of a rational, adult point of view. There are also times when this rose-tinted POV and childlike appetite for adventure can cast a shadow on his ethics, such as the myriad number of scenes throughout On the Road when you just want to grab Jack by the collar and beat it into his head that Neal Cassady isn’t a good guy. He has three different wives with children all across the country and here he is still behaving like he’s a kid, manically running back and forth across the country answering to nobody and living solely in search of “kicks”. Not to mention the different times both he and Jack discuss wanting to have sex with high school girls. That stuff pretty obviously can’t be reconciled. And as much as I’d like to section off the Jack Kerouac that I love and admire from the Jack Kerouac that makes me want to gag and regret ever mentioning that he’s a literary hero of mine, that’s just not possible. Those parts are connected.

But while it can be disheartening to see your heroes pale when you revisit them later on, the more critical approach that comes with rereading someone you loved in your youth as an adult I think can actually deepen the meaning of the work and your connection to it. When I first read Kerouac there was an authority that came with it. This was serious literature. The context of mystery and coolness that surrounded the book in my mind when I first found it that summer in high school meant that no matter what was written inside I was going to think it the greatest writing ever. But as I keep rereading it over the years I come at it each time with a more critical eye and I begin to pay attention to the authority of context that comes with reading writers that have been canonized. I start to notice that the Neal Cassady that I thought was so cool as a kid is actually a shitty father who cheats on his wives as well as a child predator. Now I start questioning if the Beats are just some hedonistic, self-righteous hipsters. After all this Neal Cassady is their proclaimed “Hero” and Jack and Allen are both very enchanted by his ethos and show no real signs of critique towards him. But then I remember that they were both also very religious. And quite pious too. Jack claims in the Dharma Bums that he was celibate for a year as part of his Buddhism. The sex, drugs & rock and roll jazz lifestyle they lived wasn’t solely for pure bodily pleasure, it was supposed to be part of a search for experience. “Truth”. I don’t know these days I feel about all of that. It becomes this big chess game of sincerity and authenticity that I don’t like getting into. “Were they doing this because they sincerely believed it or were they doing this to be cool?”
I worry a lot about whether or not I identify with the Beats or not. When I imagine the Beat Generation that’s been portrayed to me over the years through pop culture I see a café filled goatees and berets and people snapping to spoken word poetry over congas. That feels really ridiculous to me. When I think about the real life antecedent for an image like this, like Ginsberg’s famous reading of “Howl” for the first time at the Six Gallery in San Francisco, and Kerouac’s recollection of this night that supposedly spearheaded the “San Francisco Renaissance”, how they passed around jugs of wine and started yelling things like “go!” and “yeah man you’ve got it!” like it’s a jazz club, I’ve got to be honest I kind of roll my eyes.” And I don’t like that I’ve become cynical like that. I hate that it turns into this game of “I really and truly and authentically like and “get” the Beats, you’re just posturing to be cool.” Because that’s how I got into them. I got into the Beats specifically because of this context of supposed cool that I saw around them when my dad first cracked that Kerouac joke and sent me down the rabbit hole that’s led me to right here, right now.

I know that I do love Jack Kerouac’s writing. It’s tender and exciting and it feels like talking to an old friend. It reads best in the late summer and the fall and it’s September now so.

May 12 563 The community of Iona was founded by Colum Cille (St Columba) from Ireland.

Columba is undoubtedly the most important saint associated with Celtic churches.

Legends about him grew over the centuries, and many of the stories must be treated with caution. One of the more famous paints him as a sort of Christian sorcerer’s apprentice, naughtily copying his master’s precious psalter by the light of his own hand, and thereby sparking a major battle!

So too, hundreds of poems, some quite romantic in their descriptions of nature, others simple devotional verses, were attributed to the saint long after his death. Nevertheless, through the obscuring mists of his legends have endured and many make the pilgrimage every year to visit Iona. His feast day is on June 9th.

You have any fic recs for 8th year drarry?

So I’ve finally got round to rec-ing drarry 8th year!!! This has been a long time coming so thank you guys for your patients, I just really wanted this to be thorough as it’s my favourite genre. On this list I’ve included all fics that include going back to Hogwarts after the war (because some don’t strictly focus on 8th year, instead call it re-doing 7th year). All fic’s here are also pretty long, I thought I wouldn’t included one-shots because you’d be waiting on me forever to finish that list. So if you guys want to see an 8th year one shot rec just ask and I’ll do that separately. I completely adore 8th year fics, so hope you enjoy (my absolute favs are marked with ***)

  • Right Hand Red *** Harry felt Malfoy’s breath on his lips as they came together over the bottle, hands firmly planted on the floor as though they each needed their familiar soil, refusing to cross into enemy territory.
  • To Give Everything Draco finds The Room, a torture chamber in the Hogwarts dungeons and longs for someone to submit to him. Harry finds he needs that and more.
  • At your Service *** Hogwarts students are in danger; Harry is determined to save them all. There’s only one thing he knows for certain: Draco Malfoy is somehow involved. An eight year fic.
  • Love Comes Tumbling*** 'Harry’s thoughts were of how much he would have done differently with Malfoy over the years, and of Dumbledore’s final words to the other boy … “It is my mercy, and not yours, that matters now.” Maybe, Harry wondered, he could find some mercy, too, and give Malfoy the second chance that Dumbledore had believed him worthy of.’
  • Tug O Want Harry is back at Hogwarts minding his own business when he finds himself magically drawn to Draco Malfoy. Over and over again.
  • Get Some*** Harry is sick of everyone treating him differently after the war, and catches onto the one person who doesn’t seem to care
  • Let Me be Your Voice As the hero of the revolution, Harry leads the wizarding world in its efforts to rebuild; but first old wounds must be tended, rifts caused by hate mended, and his history with Draco Malfoy seems like the perfect place to start.
  • When the Songbird Stopped Singing Shortly after the war, Draco Malfoy wakes up with a new understanding, and Harry Potter needs firmer ground to walk on. Unfortunately, life is never easy, especially with the burdens of N.E.W.T.s looming closer. As Draco struggles to maintain his sanity, Harry is back to his old routine—stalking Draco.
  • Marginal Notes When you’re 18, and nothing is as it was meant to be, sometimes it can be hard to let the right people know what you are thinking.
  • Two Sides of the Same Coin*** Harry and Draco find out the hard way that the line between hate and love is a fine one, and that somewhere between the Battle of Hogwarts and being thrust back together as Hogwarts eighth years, they may have just crossed it.
  • Don’t Think Twice Harry was just trying to get away for a while. He didn’t mean to get trapped in the Prefect’s Bath with Draco Malfoy.
  • Unknown Pleasures The Room of Requirement was definitely broken. Why else would it be presenting Harry with a whip, some handcuffs, a blindfold, and a… what exactly was that thing, anyway?
  • Hurt for the Right Reasons Everything was so cocked up. He just wanted this one thing. He wanted to hurt for the right reasons for once.
  • Punishment Harry loses an impromptu wager with unforeseen consequences that open doors neither he nor Draco Malfoy had known existed.
  • How to Handle an Enemy Everyone knows that it’s no fun playing truth or dare with a Slytherin. But add a little Veritaserum, a scheming duo of Slytherin girls and surprising things can be revealed. Particularly about the fine line between love and hate…
  • The Potter Malfoy Problem The room of requirement’s gone mad — at least, that’s what Harry thinks. There’s no way that Draco Malfoy ‘requires’ him, of all people, but why does it keep dragging Harry there like he’s some kind of furniture, every time Malfoy enters it? Throw in Pansy the pervert and a clipboard-wielding Hermione, and things can only go from bad to worse. And that’s not even mentioning the pirates …
  • Dragon Tamer Desperate to avoid an arranged marriage, Draco convinces Harry to pretend to be his boyfriend. What follows is an epic romantic comedy involving scheming, snogging, silliness, shagging, snarky boys, superstars, singing, shagging, snuggling, secrets, sex gods, shagging, and a bunny named Draco Lucius Malfoy the Third.
  • Absolution Draco and Harry return to Hogwarts after the war, both struggling with their own issues. Their unlikely friendship blooms into more but is torn apart by circumstances outside their control. Warnings for slash, language and explicit sexual content.
  • Aftermath Harry returns to Hogwarts to finish his education but there have been a few changes – the most important of which is a Slytherin in the Gryffindor dorms and a teacher who is acting suspiciously.
  • An Act of Simple Devotion It’s a age-old story. You fancy a boy and you think he fancies you. Sure there are problems – attacks on former Death Eaters, crazed tabloid journalists and your girlfriend – but you have a cunning plan. Now if he’d only explain the L. Ron Hubbard-like references …
  • Draco Malfoy it’s your Lucky Day Even though he’s unarmed, injured, lost in the Forbidden Forest, and facing a possible murder charge, Draco Malfoy gets lucky.
  • For all the Marbles The prompt I worked with “Harry has lost his marbles and Draco helps him find them.” I had a lot of fun with it. Hope you enjoy it!
  • He was He and I was a Bunny The war is over and “eighth year” is about to begin at Hogwarts. But for Harry and Draco, nothing is quite the same. Harry’s looking for an escape, Draco’s looking for a friend. Does a little black bunny hold the answers for both of our boys?
  • Master Work Harry’s eighth-year at Hogwarts is going about as well as all the others. Someone is out to get him, Aurors keep questioning him about the final battle and, worst of all, Draco is determined to repay his life debt to Harry.
  • Moving On Harry tries to put his life back together after the fall of Voldemort, but it’s more complicated than he thought. And he hadn’t counted on war changing everything around him so much.
  • Trajectories Rembrandt’s phrase in describing his painting: “Die meeste ende di naetureelste beweechgelickhijt”, can be translated as greatest, most natural movement (emotion or motive).
  • Unexpected Consequences*** Harry was going back to school. He was going to play Quidditch, sleep in lessons, hang out with his friends, and generally just enjoy being a kid for a change. And he was also going to do it while being bonded with Malfoy, because apparently life was just going to continue throwing curveballs at him. Harry didn’t know why he expected anything different.
  • Helix*** Seven months after the end of the war, Harry is feeling lost. Fortunately, he is about to be offered an unexpected and sparkling chance to find himself again. [2014 advent fic]
  • In the Interest of Inter-House Co-operation Organizing a Duelling Club was supposed to be a fun extracurricular activity for Harry’s 8th year. But add in Draco Malfoy and a malfunctioning Room of Requirement, and things can’t help but get complicated.
  • No Greater Victory Back at Hogwarts after the war, a defeated Draco Malfoy is prepared to settle for life’s simpler pleasures: snark, sex, and Slytherin scheming. That is until Pansy, newly in possession of Malfoy Manor, offers to return his ancestral home. Just one condition: he has to win, and break, Harry Potter’s heart to get it. That’s no problem. Draco’s got this situation completely under control. Completely. At least until he doesn’t.
  • Draco Malfoy is not Attractive Draco Malfoy is NOT attractive. Not even one bit. Nope
  • Something I Don’t Want to Stop It’s Harry and Draco’s eighth year, the Houses have been all but demolished in favor of unity, and they’re being forced to room together. How ever will they cope?
  • What Malfoys Don’t Do There are things that Malfoys simply don’t do. They don’t cry, or show any emotion unless entirely unavoidable. They don’t back down. And they certainly don’t admit that maybe, just maybe, they might be wrong about a few things.Draco’s back for his eighth year, and with everything that’s changed, these basic rules will soon be called into question.
  • White Lies Draco drinks a potion that makes him know if a person is lying, and Harry, apparently at fault that Draco is this way, is forced to 'help’ him with the effects of the potion. For the first time, they deal with each other with no lies to hide behind.

Oh and I’m going to try and keep this list updated, so don’t be alarmed if it keeps getting longer

hiiii. your blog is great!! I'm wondering if you know of any fics in which Harry and Draco hide their relationship?? like when they're alone they are all cute but when in public they go back to "hating" each other

I’m so sorry for the delay! I’m not sure if in all of these fics they hate each other, but their relationship is kept secret. Also, I’m not so sure about cute, these fics can get pretty angsty - the first 10 fics are pretty fluffy compared to the rest.

Simple Devotional Activities: Athena

Going out and taking a pottery class, knitting, and self defense are often brought up when worshipping Athena. These are wonderful and true, but not everyone can afford it, find time or energy to do so. Here are simple devotional activities you can do at home or during your spare time:
• studying
• read a book
• listen to a friend talk about something they’re passionate about (you’ll learn something new)
• watch tutorials of something that interests you
• watch a historical documentary
• Meditation (strengthen your mind)
• Go on a short walk outside your house or do some stretches as exercise
• motivate friends and family when they need it
• do some sort of puzzle or crossword challenge (online/apps work just fine)
• organize your room
• use a planner or calendar to keep track of things you need to do
• make realistic goals for yourself to accomplish overtime
• create a new spell and share it (you’re taking the time to invent something & share the information)
• be proud of your accomplishments no matter how small they may seem

These are just a few things, there’s so much one can do to honor Athena! If you have more ideas please feel free to add them.

Shimura TATSUMI 志村立美 (1907-1980)
is known for designing several striking bijin-ga prints towards the end of the shin hanga movement. Born in Takasaki, Gunma, Shimura’s real name was Sentaro. In 1921, he began studying art with Yamakawa Saiho, a well-known llustrator. Three years later, he became an apprentice of Saiho’s son, Yamakawa Shuho, who was also a bijin-ga artist and print designer. Shimura exhibited paintings with Kyodotai in 1927 and with Seikinkai in 1938. He became known for his paintings of beautiful women with long eyelashes and blurred pupils.
From 1948 to 1952, Shimura designed several woodblock prints of beauties that were published by Kato Junji. Later he collaborated with the Japanese Institute of Prints to create a series called “Five figures of modern beauties” (Gendai bijin fuzoku gotai). These prints were published in 1953 in editions of 200. They depict Japanese women in traditionally feminine poses and attire. The finely detailed figures are juxtaposed against very simple backgrounds. Shimura devoted his career entirely to Nihonga, or Japanese style painting.

Symptoms of Weak Iman (faith)

1. Committing Sins

Some people insist on committing the same sins over and over again. As a result, repugnance of sins is slowly withdrawn from their heart to the point that
they commit these sins openly as described in this Hadith:

“ “All of my followers will be forgiven except those who commit sins openly. Such is the case of a man commits a sin at night and Allah had his sin concealed till the morning comes. But, he says openly: ‘O so and so, I did such and such yesterday.’ Allah had covered his sin, but he uncovered the veil of Allah from it.” (Related by Al-Bukhâri).

2. Hardening of the Heart

The person reaches a stage where he feels that his heart has turned into a solid rock that is not affected by anything. Allah says:

“And yet, after this, your hearts hardened and became like rocks, or even harder.” (Al-Baqarah, 2:74).

A hardened heart is not affected by anything – even seeing people die and attending funerals would not move it. The person with a hardened heart may even carry a corpse and bury it, yet, he walks in the graveyard as if he were strolling between pine trees!

3. Performing Acts of Worship Poorly

Such a person remains absent-minded during prayers and while reciting the Qur’ân. He also does not contemplate upon the meaning of the supplications he is making. As a result, he recites them in a monotonous tone void of any reflections. He does not think for a moment about the value of these supplications. He forgets that:

“ “Allah does not accept the supplication from an inattentive, heedless heart.” (Related by Al-Tirmidhi).

His acts of worship are reduced to hollow movements with no spirit behind them. Allah describes the hypocrites:

“And they do not remember Allah but little.” (Al-Nisâ’, 4:142).

A hard hearted person remains indifferent when he does not perform some good deeds and misses those times of worship that have more reward in them. His lack of interest to earn rewards is obvious. Delaying Hajj when he is capable of performing it, missing congregational prayers in the Masjid, and even the Jumu’ah prayer are a few examples of this. The Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam [pbuh] said:

“ “People will continue to withdraw to rows behind the first one until Allah puts them in a back place in Hell.” (Related by Abû Dawud).

Furthermore, he does not feel remorse if he misses obligatory duties and does not try to perform the different Sunnah prayers or invocations that he misses. He ignores them, convincing himself that they are only Sunnah!

4. Lack of Tranquillity

His chest gets tightened, his mood changes, he feels as if he is carrying a heavy load, and he becomes annoyed quickly because of minor things. He gets pestered by the behavior of the people around him and he does not forgive them easily. He harbors malice towards fellow Muslims over insignificant issues. The Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam has described Imân to be forgiveness:

“ Imân is patience and forgiveness.” (Related by Al-Tirmidhi)

In another Hadith, the Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam described the believer in the following manner:

“ “He makes friends and is befriended and there is no goodness in (one who) does not make friends or is not befriended.” (Related by Al-Tirmidhi).

5. Verses of the Qur’ân Have No Effect Upon Him

The promises, warnings, commands, prohibitions, and descriptions of the Day of Judgment do not make his eyes flood with tears, or his heart quiver, or his soul shiver. Consequently, he gets bored and tired when he listens to the recital of the Qur’ân!

6. He is Negligent in Remembering Allah

This simple act of devotion becomes heavy upon him to the point that when he raises his hands in supplication, he hastens to fold them up quickly to conclude it. He is not eager to repent to Allah, the Mighty and Glorious, and to make invocations to Him for his needs. Allah describes the hypocrites:

“And when they stand up to pray, they stand with laziness and to be seen of men, and they do not remember Allah but little.” (Al-Nisa’, 4:142).

7. He Does Not Get Angry When the Commandments of Allah Are Violated

This is because the glowing light of honor in his heart has been extinguished and as a result, his limbs have become numb to repudiate evil. So he does not bother to enjoin good or forbid evil. This is due to a weak heart as indicated by the Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam:

“ “Temptations are presented to the heart, one by one. Any heart that accepts them will be left with a black stain, but any heart that rejects them will be left with a mark of purity, until the hearts become one of two types: a dark heart that has turned away and become like an overturned vessel, and a pure heart that will never be harmed by temptation for as long as the earth and the heavens exist.” (Related by Muslim).

So the desire of enjoining good and forbidding evil disappears from a sick heart. Good and evil are the same to it.

Rather, the person may even be happy to hear about the corruption that is being committed on earth. His unfortunate soul forgets that the sin upon him is the same as the sin upon the person who witnessed the evil and approved of it, as the Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam said:

“ “When a sin is committed on earth, the one who witnessed it and hates it is like one who was absent from it, and the one who was absent from it but was pleased with it (after he found out about it), it is like he witnessed it. (Related by Abû Dawud)

Since being pleased with the sin is a deed of his heart, it makes the sin upon him equal to the sin of the one who witnessed it.

8. He loves to be in Gatherings and be Engrossed in Talking

He tries to impose his views on others and likes the discussion to center around him. Gatherings in which idle talk takes prominence are considered like slaughter houses from which the Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam warned us when he said:

“ “Watch out for the slaughterhouses (meaning) gatherings.” (Related by Al-Bayhaqi).
9. He is Arrogant

He likes people to stand up for him when he enters to meet them because feeling great gratifies his diseased soul. the Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam said:

“ “The one who is pleased that the slaves of Allah stand up for him, then let him be assured of his place in the Fire.” (Related by Al-Bukhâri in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad)

Mu’awiyah Ibn Abi Sufyan entered upon two companions of the Prophet, Ibn ‘Amir stood up and Ibn Zubayr sat down. Seeing this, Mu’awiyah said to Ibn ‘Amir: “Sit down, because I heard the Messenger of Allah say:

“ ‘The one who loves that another man stand up for him, then let him rest assured of his sitting place in the Fire.”‘ (Related by Abû Dawud).

A similar example is that he will get angry at a person who applies the Sunnah and starts shaking hands with people on his right hand side. Also, when he enters a gathering, he is not satisfied unless someone else, already sitting, gets up so that he may,sit in his place despite the fact that he is forbidden to do so by the Prophetsallallahu alayhe wa sallam:

“ “Let not a man make another one stand for him then sit in his place.” (Related by Al-Bukhâri).

10. Stinginess and Greed

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala has praised those who spend their wealth for good causes and at the same time blamed those who are miserly. In the Qur’ân Allah has praised the Ansar for the way they gave preference to the Muhajirun (Muslims who migrated from Makkah) over themselves:

“But they (Ansar) give them preference over themselves even though they were in need of that (the booty). And whosoever is saved from his own covetousness, such are they who will be the successful.” (Al-Hashr, 59:9).

Allah has clarified that the successful ones are those who protect themselves against stinginess. Without doubt, weakness of Imân is born from stinginess as the Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam said:

“ “Imân and covetousness can never come together in the heart of a slave.” (Related by Al-Nasa’i).

Concerning the dangers of stinginess and its effects upon one’s soul, the Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam explained it to be:

“ “Beware of covetousness, because the ones before you perished because of covetousness. It induces them to be miserly so they became misers and it induced them to break the ties (of kinship) so they broke it and induced them to commit sins so they committed sins.” (Related by Abû Dawûd).

A greedy person also has a weak Imân. He scarcely spends anything for the sake of Allah even if he is called to donate in charity when his Muslim brothers are hungry and afflicted by hardships. There is nothing clearer in this matter than the Book of Allah:

“Behold! It is you who are called to spend freely in Allah’s Cause: but even among you are such as turn out to be niggardly! And yet, he who acts niggardly in Allah’s Cause is but niggardly towards himself: for Allah is Rich, and you are poor. And if you turn away from Him, He will cause other people to take your place, and they will not be the likes of you.” (Muhammad, 47:38)

11. He Falls into Doubtful Matters

When he performs an action, he does not ask if it is an act of righteousness, but rather will it earn him any sin or not. This is exactly what the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam informed us of:

“ “But he who falls into doubtful matters falls into that which is unlawful, like the shepherd who pastures around a sanctuary, all about grazing therein. Truly, every king has a sanctuary, and Allah’s sanctuary is His prohibitions.” (Related by Muslim)

When such people ask for a fatwah (Islamic ruling) about something, and find out that it is forbidden, they do not give up. They want to know how severe the prohibition is. How many sins does he earn if he commits it? He is not concerned to stay away from evil and sinful deeds, rather he is inclined to take the first step towards haram things by belittling the burning effects of sins which run him the risk of committing haram, and remove the screen between him and the sin. This is why the Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam said:

“ “Know that some people from my Ummah will come on the Day of Judgment with good deeds like the white mountains of Tihama, but Allah will make them scattered dust.” Thawban said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, describe them to us, so that we may not be one of them without knowing it!’ He said, “They will be your brothers, and from your people, and they will take from the night as you do (meaning prayers, etc.), but they are a people who, when they were alone with the prohibitions of Allah, violated them.” (Related by Ibn Majah).

So, you will find him engulfed in forbidden things without any protection or shielding, and this is more evil than the one who commits them but with some reluctance. These people commit sins with ease as a result of their ailing Imânand do not see their act to be an evil one. This is how Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud radhiallahu anhu described the way a believer and a hypocrite perceive sins:

“ “A believer sees his sins as if he were sitting under a mountain, fearing it might fall upon him, while a sinner sees his sins as a fly passing over his nose, so he gets rid of it with his hand.” (Related by Al-Bukhâri).

12. Belittling Good Deeds
There is lack of concern on the part of the sick at heart to perform small deeds of righteousness contrary to what the Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam has taught us when he said:

“ “Do not belittle any small act of kindness even if it is to pour water from your bucket into the vessel of the one who asks for it or to talk to your brother with a cheerful face.” Related by Ahmad.

So, acts that appear to be minor should not be underestimated. Hence, meeting a fellow Muslim with a smiling face and removing trash and dirt from the Masjid – even as little as a straw – entails great rewards. It may be that a small deed becomes a reason for the forgiveness of major sins. Allah thanks His slave for these small deeds and forgives him.

The Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam said:

“ “Once, a man saw the branch of a tree in the middle of a road. So, he said, ‘By Allah, I will remove this from the path of the Muslims so they may not be hurt.’ For this action, he was put in Paradise.” (Related by Muslim).

Mu’adh Ibn Jabal was once walking with someone. He removed a pebble from the way. The man asked Mu’adh why he did that. Mu’adh answered him: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhe wa sallam say:

“ “One who removes a stone from the way has a good deed written for him, and one for whom a good deed is written shall enter Paradise.‘” (Related by Al-Tabarani).

13. Not Caring About the Affairs of Muslims

A person with a sick heart does not react to the needs of Muslims by making supplications, giving charity, or offering assistance. He does not care if his brothers are afflicted by a hardship in any part of the world such as being overwhelmed by the enemy, being persecuted, or being stricken by disasters. It is enough for him that his conditions are good! This is because of his ailing Imân; A believer is the opposite of that as described by the Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam:

“ “A believer feels pain for the believers, just as the body feels distress over what is troubling the head.” (Related by Ahmad).

14. He is Deprived of the Friendship of Brothers

The Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam said:

“ “Two persons who became friends for the sake of Allah do not separate except because of a sin committed by one of them.” (Related by Al-Bukhâri in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad).

This is a proof of the evil effects of sins: it breaks the ties of brotherhood. This alienation that a person finds between himself and his brothers is sometimes the result of a decline in Imân which results from committing sins. So the love others have for him dwindles.

15. Showing Grief and Fear When Afflicted by a Hardship or When in Difficulty

Such a person is often found to be shaky in offering obligatory duties, unbalanced, absent minded, lost, and fidgety. He is not able to face reality with unwavering limbs and a firm heart. All of this is due to ailing Imân.

If the Imân were strong, he would have been firm and faced the greatest of hardships with strength and steadfastness.

16. Disputing and Arguing Unnecessarily

Much engagement in these habits hardens the heart as the Prophet said:

“ “A people never went astray after being upon guidance except through disputes.”(Related by Ahmad).

So, argumentation without proof and proper intention takes one away from the Straight Path. These days, most people argue falsely and without knowledge or guidance. It is enough for them to leave this bad habit after knowing what the Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam said:

“ “I guarantee a house in the outskirts of Paradise to the one who gives up arguing even if he were on the right side.” (Related by Abû Dawud).

17. Attachment to Worldly Life

He is so materialistic that he feels anguish when something of this life, like wealth, honor, status, etc, is taken away from him. He feels as if he has been injured badly because he did not get what others did. His feeling of injury becomes stronger and he feels rejected on seeing his Muslim brother get something of this world which did not reach him. Envy takes root in his heart so he wishes that this bounty be taken away from his brother. This is what the Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam warned us against:

“ “Never can Imân and envy come together in the heart of a slave.” (Related by Al- Nasa’i).

18. His Speech is Void of the Etiquette of the Qur’ân and Sunnah
The signs of Imart are absent from him. You will barely find in this person’s speech quotations from the Qur’ân, or Sunnah, or the sayings of the early pious generations of Muslims.

These are some of the symptoms of a weak faith. By becoming aware of the symptoms, one has made the first step towards the remedy.

randomlena-deactivated20141129 asked:

I was wondering how you devote yourself to Persephone. I am new to Hellenism and I have always been extremely drawn to Persephone and I am just trying to do all the research I possible can on her but am not finding much. I was recently told to open up to her, but I do not know how I would do that. I am trying to figure out her sacred days and everything. Do you have anything that can help me?

Acts of devotion, for me, include: prayer, offerings, altar-setting, creative acts in her honor (art, writing, etc), and living by her example.

Here’s what I would suggest in terms of opening up to her. Every night (for a few days), light a candle. Near the candle, offer Persephone a glass of something (wine, milk, honey, pomegranate juice, even just water) by saying “For you, Persephone.” Read (out loud, if possible), the Orphic Hymn to Persephone. Then sit for 10 minutes and focus on your thoughts. Try to be receptive to messages from Her, in whatever form they come. Let thoughts come and go, remaining aware of your thoughts and feelings. Write down the images, sounds, and feelings that come to you. Use all your senses. After a few days, look over your notes for any patterns, symbols, stories. Ask a devotee for help interpreting if needed, or do some research on your own. That is one way to build your connection with Persephone.

Sacred days: Many modern practitioners honor Persephone’s descent to the Underworld on the Autumnal Equinox and her ascent to the Upperworld on the Vernal Equinox. This is not traditional Hellenic Polytheism, but is widely practiced. You are free to find your own sacred days for her as well - personally, I like to give offerings on each lunar month’s two quarter moons, since they signify the “halfway” that Persephone embodies. In traditional HP, the last days of the lunar month are sacred to chthonic (earthly) deities.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
