- How I feel about this character
Rumple is complicated, man. I saw a post once about how Bobby started with two characters, the Dark One and Mr. Gold, and by now he’s expanded to have played five or six, and I totally agree. There’s a lot going on with this guy, so it’s hard to pin down how I feel about him. I think he’s a fantastic villain; the Dark One is just crazy enough but still super-cunning, and the way he operates his deals is kinda fascinating. Mr. Gold exchanged most of the crazy for this super in-control badassery that is pretty great too. He’s sympathetic, and I definitely prefer him over Regina for the way he’s always acknowledged his own villainy, but Rumple has a ton of issues all his own. He’s a coward, obsessed with power, who has never truly had to face any real/lasting consequences for his actions. He’s got the most work to do, redeeming-wise, but I’m hoping that means we’ll get to see a little more justice done to that arc (
TLK/white magic grumbles). I’m also kind of a big fan of his “if you aren’t family fuck you” moral code even if it isn’t really right, haha.
- All the people I ship romantically with this character
Belle, I suppose. I don’t really go out of my way to ship them or anything, but I find myself getting emotional about their scenes together while watching. However, I have some issues with their relationship, and in basically any conflict I’m pretty much guaranteed to side with Belle.
- My non-romantic OTP for this character
I feel like a lot of people would says Rumple/Regina, and I do love their sassmaster interactions. But actually, more than Regina or even Neal, I love Rumple’s interactions with Emma. They’ve had such an interesting relationship right from the start, and the way it’s developed alongside everything else really fascinates me. I wrote this big long meta/headcanon post about it once, actually, laying it all out. I really love scenes with these two and hope to get more next season.
- My unpopular opinion about this character
Rumple murdered his wife for leaving him, used Cora to his own ends while romantically involved with her, allowed Zelena to become emotionally dependent on him before discarding her when she was no longer useful, and his relationship with Belle has involved a lot of deceit. He has an awful track record with romantic relationships and I want to see him answer for some of this. He’s been directly or indirectly responsible for the death of every woman romantically associated with him except Belle. I don’t think he plans to kill her anytime soon obviously but this really worries me.
- One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
Well, like I already said I want more Emma/Rumple scenes and to see him face consequences for Milah and his other crimes. I would also be really interested in seeing Rumple make a friend - if that’s even possible. I don’t know if he could ever really let down his walls enough to form a friendship on equal grounds with another person, but it would be interesting to see.
