Vans Art Spotlight:  Jon Carling (Oakland, USA)

Known for his fantastical and dreamy illustrations and drawings –from bird headed warriors to out of this world landscapes with cosmic skies and mystical female warrior / priestesses, Oakland based artist Jon Carling has filled endless sketchbooks with his unique imagination. Carling’s early love of music has influenced his artistic and creative processes, from creating and trading fanzines to collaborating with various bands such as The Brian Jonestown Massacre to Dead Meadows.  We were glad to have Jon on our Vans Art Spotlight where he talks about sketching in the shower, growing up with music, and getting out of a creative rut.

We have no doubt his interview will inspire you to fill your own sketchbooks!

All of Shel Silverstein books of poems were my absolutely favorites as a kid. This typography quote poster was created in admiration of his words. I tried to bring his language and poetry to life with each quirky letter and type setting. By using typefaces I created (Lunchbox & Lunchbox Slab) I was able to customize areas to fit the words.

The color and texture in the prints are inspired by a combination of watercolor textures and silk screen printing.

Poster has been printed at 1440 dpi on 90 lbs Studio Watercolor Paper. Available in various sizes. On sale at Etsy!

Team Sleep Announce Their Return, Invite Fans To New Album Sessions

In news that should shock some, Team Sleep have returned and intend to work on a new album in Woodstock, NY. In addition to that, they are inviting fans to participate in an in-studio album/performance with the band. The group said of their return:

“Dear friends,
Please join us as we create our next record in Woodstock, New York. We’ll gather at Applehead studio, near the base of the Catskill mountains to eat, write, play and record. For a long time, business people, logistics, careers, adulthood, families and the House Republicans have thwarted us, but we’ve continued to make music. At the same time, the creative process has become increasingly fragmented and dehumanized.
With that in mind, we’re very excited to get together with our dear friends, hang out, play music and have a unique experience in a beautiful place. We’d like you to be there, too. Your participation will be essential to the independent creation and release of the live performance and our forthcoming studio record; we look forward to seeing you.

-Silk-screened posters hand made by the band and signed

Silk-screened posters by Michael Carney:
“… a two poster set that I designed for the black keys two Ohio dates of the up coming us tour. These are my first ever silk screened show posters I have designed / made for the band so I am really excited about them They were printed using two florescent inks, and a custom mixed glow in the dark yellow ink. The posters change colors under black light, and also glow in the dark. I will have a limited number available for sale on my webstore sometime late next week.”
