Creating Likeable Characters

Sometimes it’s difficult to make your characters likeable as they are tested and are pushed to further and further lengths. Sometimes they have to make hard decisions, and sometimes the pressure gets to them and they mess up, hurt another character or an innocent bystander. How can you keep them likeable throughout the whole plotline?

- Keep their motivations pure.
It almost always comes back to the heart – if their heart is pure, and that’s established early-on, the audience is more likely to root for them.

- Give them flaws – make them human.
Not every character has to have some huge problem, like an addiction or a traumatic past or a disability – if your entire cast does, it’s no problem, but it’s not necessary. But every character has to have some flaw(s), whether it’s cheating at card games because he can’t stand to lose or being too-closed minded or closing off when she gets too emotional. If your character doesn’t have a flaw, they start to come off as too perfect, too angelic, pretentious.

- Give them permission to mess up.
This ties in with flaws – if your character is inclined to make a bad decision at any point in the plot, don’t steer him away from it because “oh no he’s my protagonist and he must be Good and Whole and Pure and All-Knowing”. Let him walk into that ambush despite the sick feeling in his stomach and get half his army killed; let her rush into a confrontation with a bully and get into a fight with another girl who has a switchblade. Let your characters mess up – it shows that they’re human.

- But if your character messes up, let them own up to it eventually.
The general who killed half his army by ignoring the unease in the back of his mind might cry over their makeshift graves long after the rest of the platoon is asleep; the girl sitting in the infirmary might feel remorse for knocking her opponent’s block off. Or your characters might argue and might be stubborn and might not apologize for weeks. But let them apologize eventually. This goes back to the heart, and what the character knows is right.

- Relationships with other characters are vital.
That’s not to say a loner character can’t be likeable – but the audience’s perception of a loner character is determined by the thoughts/words of other characters. Characters all color each other and define parts of each other, just like people do to each other in real life. If your character is a jerk to other characters and other characters don’t like him (especially if the characters who dislike him are likeable), the audience won’t like him either. The character’s image depends not just on himself, but on his supporting cast.

Hope this helps! - @authors-haven

having to apologize for or ask if you’re being too much is the 10th layer of hell tbh

Imagine: Imagine Dean and Sam getting transported to the French Mistake universe. Only for Dean to realize he is married to you, his best friend, love of his life and… Sam’s girlfriend.

Great thank you to @gaveherhearttotheliontattoo for being an amazing beta!

Read Part 1 here!

“Well, talking about awkward huh?” Dean laughed nervously as Sam only looked at him with a hard look.

“Yeah, very.” he said through pursed lips and Dean cleared his throat, avoiding looking at him in the first place.

“Honey?” it was your voice that broke the silence that had set between the two Winchesters “Can you come help me?” you sounded a little too eager and at your question Dean’s body stiffened and he felt his heart beat harder inside his chest. Gosh, how every fiber in his body just screamed for him to find you.

But he knew he had to keep himself, much less something from showing. He cleared his throat and shook his head “Well, this is gonna be a whole lot of fun.” he huffed.

“Definitely.” Sam mumbled and Dean instantly looked at him, raising an eyebrow.

“You know I’m just joking, right?” he asked with a deep frown but Sam wouldn’t even look him in the eyes.

“Yeah, when are you not?” he stuffed his hands in his jeans pockets and prefered to look at the things that were in the house instead of pay attention to his insanely increasing jealousy.

midnight cancer confessions

i’m still awake going through the motions of unforgiving memories and all of my worries, the feeling of sick inside my stomach, all the people that the voices inside my head tell me are going to leave. i try to fall asleep and begin drifting off and everything becomes watery in the space between sleep and awake, and then i am thrusted out of sleep and dream, not sure if i’m awake or asleep in this nightmare. i roll over holding my own tummy, wishing somebody was here to fill the dead moon that eats away like a dead space in me. midnight is when i feel most alive, the only time i feel safe or at peace and yet being alone is destroying me

A/N: I have been really sentimental today and have also been lying through my teeth about when I would upload this. Thank you all for being on this journey with me. I may or may not have sobbed while writing this. And I may or may not be willing to write an epilogue. Thank you for the past 7 months of support you’ve shown this series. I hope the ending doesn’t disappoint.

“I can’t believe you’re actually here!” Momo almost screeches as you step out of the front seat of Mina’s car.

“Thank god,” you retort as you smooth your hands over your irritated stomach, “I don’t think anyone’s driving has ever made that car sick before.”

“Hey!” Mina protests as she pulls your bags out of the backseat, “I got us here over an hour earlier than the GPS predicted.”

Momo snorts as you shoot a glance at your speed demon best friend, “I think I have some ginger tea somewhere in my apartment. We can make you some to settle your stomach.”

“You don’t. The only thing you have in this apartment is potato chips and pig’s feet,” Sana teases as she joins all of you on the driveway of Momo’s complex.

“I’ve missed you,” you admit as you wrap your arms around your two best friends, “Please don’t leave me alone with her for that long.”

“I heard that,” Mina hisses as the car door beeps as it locks.

Sana doesn’t let go of your shoulders as all four of you proceed into Momo’s apartment, “It seems like we have a lot to catch up, but do you want to shower first? You smell.”

You sniff you armpits, “I do not!”

“That’s because you can’t smell yourself,” she gently pats your back as she barely shows your around the apartment before she is shoving you into the bathroom and turning on the shower, “We can go to dinner once you’re ready.”

My back was resting against the soft, white pillow. I pulled the covers higher, covering my entire body. I felt cold, but it had nothing to do with the temperature in the bedroom, it was all about the enormous fight Shawn and I had earlier. Fighting with him always made me feel so cold, so tired and completely drained from any sort of energy. I was reading a book or at least trying to, but I hardly managed to read a single page.

Honestly, I just needed something to distract me from the fact that Shawn had left the apartment in anger and I hadn’t heard from him since.

You awoke to the blankets being pulled from your body. You rolled over to find them bunched around your boyfriend. “Shawn, baby, are you okay? This is the third time you’ve pulled the blankets from me tonight and you never do that.”

A low muffled groan left his mouth and into his pillow. “I don’t feel good. My stomach hurts.”

You sat up and turned on the lamp next to your side of the bed. Looking over, you saw Shawn curled up in all of the blankets and a look of discomfort resting on his face. You placed your wrist on his forehead to check his temperature. “Shawn, you’re burning up. And you’re covered in sweat. Why didn’t you wake me up earlier?” You got out of bed and walked to his side, pulling him out of bed and taking him to the bathroom.

You were over at Taehyung’s, on the couch with him and Jimin watching a movie. Sadly, you weren’t paying too much attention to it because tomorrow you were trying out for a seniors dance showcase. It was a big deal for seniors, it was what they worked for all four years. This would be what they would perform for tons of people and entertainment scouters. Your school was known for helping dancers get jobs after this showcase at the end of the year.

My Period Journey

I got my period completely unexpectedly. I hadn’t even been told a thing about it and was absolutely convinced something was wrong with me when I saw blood in my panties. I had to go, crying and scared, to my teacher. I had to sit, embarrassed and bloody, in the office and wait for my stepmom.

I was 9

The blood was thick, heavy, and I felt like I was going to throw up. My stomach rejected food, the part of my body I wasn’t even fully aware of yet was now always sticky and wet and gross and I was told it was completely and totally natural. No one told me it was okay to be afraid. No one prepared me.

“It’ll be over in a few days,” they said.

“It won’t come back until next month,” they said.

I was 10

Sleep started to elude me almost completely, and then I’d get so tired that my father had to literally drag me into a standing position so I’d start to become conscious. My stepmom didn’t explain that if my pad got full I could change it. She yelled at me because pads are expensive. I ruined almost all of my underwear because I didn’t want her to yell at me again. My dad refused to acknowledge it had happened at all. He has four daughters.

I was 11

A sharp pain gripped my side and I could barely breathe. I didn’t feel good. I begged to stay home from school. I was crying and clutching my side. Something wasn’t right.

“It’s normal,” they said.

“Don’t be so dramatic,” they said.

I passed out in science class. Woke up in the doctor’s office because my small town didn’t have a hospital and was told I’d had a ruptured ovarian cyst. I had four more cysts on my left one and at least three on my right. I needed to be on birth control and tested for PCOS.

I didn’t even know what an ovary was.

I was 12

My dad flat out refused to get me birth control. Said I didn’t need it. That there was no reason for a twelve year old to get on the pill. I’d just start having sex and who knows what else and that was that.

He’s a nurse.

I was 13

“What do you mean you’ve gone through the entire box of pads already?” my stepmother demanded, loud, shrieking. “There were 20 pads in there! How many days do you bleed?”

I didn’t know I was supposed to count.

“When does your period start? How many days between stop and start?”

I didn’t know I could count.

I started marking it all on my calendar. Some months there was nothing. Some months over half the days were filled in. I stole an entire box of pads from under the sink to hide in my room for my very own.

I was 14

New year, new calendar. I give my period tracking one to my stepmom and take her through it page by page. My periods last 10 days at the least. There is no consistent day my period begins and I show her.

“You just counted wrong,” she says.

I was 15

My legs swell. My back aches. I’ve got a headache. I puke up my dinner and shit out my breakfast five minutes after I ate it. I’ve bled all over my bed.

“You’re overreacting,” they said

“Don’t be such a baby,” they said

I was 16

I can’t eat for two straight days because if I do I will throw up. I’m not sick. I’m on my period.

It’s normal, I think.

I’m 17

I go through 40 pads this time.

It’s normal, I think.

I’m 18

I gained three pant sizes right before the blood shows up. I lay in bed all day with a heating pad across my shoulder blades, on my lower back, and one across my stomach. It doesn’t really help.

It’s normal, I think.

I’m 19

My own money. No health insurance. I moved away. Saw a doctor. I’m on birth control pills.

I’m 20

The pills have stopped working at easing my blood flow. The doctor tries a new pill. It does nothing. The doctor tries another pill. I can’t afford it. I don’t go to the doctor for four more years.

I’m 24

My girlfriend drags me to the doctor with my state health insurance. She tells the doctor about my symptoms. The doctor’s mouth opens slightly.

“That’s not normal,” she says.

I bleed for 28 days straight.

I’m diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. The doctor asks if I want an IUD. I’ve never even heard of that.

My insurance pays for it. It’s free.

“Okay,” I say.

“It’s worth a try,” I say.

I haven’t had a period in months.

I am 25

My oncologist examines my medication list. “IUD? Birth control?” he asks. “You’re married. Don’t you want kids?” No. “What about your husband.” Wife. “Oh.”

My GP is out of town. I see a new doctor. We’re discussing surgeries. Is a hysterectomy an option?

“No,” he says. “You might marry a man who wants kids.” I’m married to a woman and I don’t want kids.

My dad is a nurse. He has four daughters.

“You’re married to a woman. Why are you on birth control?”

“Because I need to be,” I say. Finally. I say. “Because I want to be.”

Because it’s my body. Period.

A faint noise rang in my ears, but not nearly loud enough to pulled me out of my heavy sleep. Only seconds later, I felt the faint squeezes on my arms. When I finally managed to open them, the room was too dark for me to see anything properly.

I rubbed my sleepy eyes, feeling just how sore they were. I blinked a few times, before finally being able to see shadows in the dark bedroom.

“Daddy, daddy” she cried again, forcing down my gaze.

prompt: 55- “don’t you dare lay a finger on her” & 86- “you know it’s okay to cry”

you walk out of the gym still clad in your cheerleading uniform, the hall filling with the loud commotion of kids as they pour out from their classes.

you see the jocks exit their locker room rowdy from practice you assume, as you make your way toward your locker one of the jocks bumps into you sending you toward the ground

“watch it idiot” i spit annoyed picking myself up of the floor “me watch it? how about you watch your mouth vixen” he steps closer to me trying to intimidate me. i place my hand on his chest pushing the jock out of my face

“you think your tough because your a bulldog?” i giggle and roll my eyes at the teen “get out of my face Chuck”

i try and move past as a crowd gathers but he’s hands dart to my arm and he pulls me back pushing me up against the lockers “no can do princess” he snarls

“seriously chuck stop being a meat head and let me go” he steps back and i glance at him before walking forward only to have chuck grab a handful of my ass as i pass

i freeze turning on my heel “what the hell chuck!” i yell feeling sick to my stomach “oh c'mon (y/n), i had to see if the rumours were true” he bites his lip and runs his hands over his head taking a good look at my body

i suddenly feel self conscious in my uniform and lookas a crowds gather “CLAYTON!” a sudden voice yells

i search for the voice as none other than reggie mantle steps through the sea of jocks and shoves his friend into the lockers behind him just like the boy had done with me.

“ah chill mantle im just having fun with the hottest little river vixen, right (y/n)” the jocks get giddy pushing on each other like ‘bros’

“it’s fine reg forget it” i mutter to the raven haired boy turning to leave the scene “yeah reg it’s fine” chuck tease slipping past the boy and walking briskly toward me to get one last touch of my ass

i squeal disgusted in the boys actions, and like lightning reggie is next to me in a flash shoving the dim witted boy up against the lockers holding him up by his sweat shirt

“don’t you dare lay a finger on her” he warns getting into his face “you hear me” he shouts and the boy nods vigorously “okay okay reg chill” he drops the boy down and I turn walking away as fast as my legs could take me.

“did i hear that chuck & reggie were fighting over you today!” ronnie gushes as we prepare for the big game.

i roll my eyes applying another coat of mascara to my lashes “jeez v it wasn’t like that at all” i exhale placing down the wand and turning to face my two best friends “chuck was being a handsy dick and reggie stuck up for me thats all”

they share a puzzled glance “wait what do you mean handsy?” betty pushes worry washing over her face “he just grabbed my ass a few times and yeah I don’t want to talk about it can we just drop it?”

“(y/n) that’s not nothing you-” and by some grace of god cheryl bounds into the locker room “let’s go sluts show time”

“god i hate the kids at this school” i mummer before following the raven and blonde headed girls out and onto the field.

we stand along the track as the bulldogs rip through their banner jogging onto the school field as the bleacher erupt in cheers. we do a few cheers and flips before it was the opposing teams turn to enter

i make my way over to the drinks table and catch chuck and his mates staring me down like a piece of meat making gestures that would only make a girl feel sick to her stomach

and like clockwork tears dribble down your fast as fast as they appear “(y/n?)” i cuz sand turn away from the boy quickly wiping my eyes before turning back to the jock “reg hey” i smile

“your crying” he states and i shake my head denying it which only causes me to cry even more “im sorry it’s stupid i shouldn’t be crying im fine” i choke and he shakes his head stepping closer to me

“hey hey” he places his hands on my shoulders in attempts to comfort me “you know it’s okay to cry?” he questions dabbing a few of my fallen tears with his thumb

“do you?” i tease earning a laugh from him which cause me to giggle to myself “um yes for a fact i do, your looking at a dude who cried during the fault in our stars”

my eyes widen “no way” he shrugs his shoulders “guilty, but if you tell anyone im afraid I’ll have to kill ya” he said as a matter of fact. i hold my hand up “scouts honour”

i wipe the remaining tears off my face and take a few steady breathes trying to block out chuck and he’s idiotic friends

“forget Chuck okay? a guy like that doesn’t deserve a pretty girls tears okay?” i look up into his eyes and smile to myself “thanks reg” he smiles shyly.

“anytime (y/n/n)” he plays with his helmet and i glance down to my shoes to nervous to say anything else

“mantle lets go!” he turns to his coach as he yells for him “coming coach” he yells back glancing at me looking slightly guilty

“im sorry ive gotta go” and i shake my head touches his shoulder softly “it’s fine it’s fine!”

“goodluck” he smiles at me and i blush “thanks reg” he waits glancing at me “what aren’t you going to wish me good luck?” he sasses and giggle.

“you won’t need it but” i throw my arms around the boys next and stand on my tip toes kissing him

“good” kiss “luck” kiss “reg” kiss

i take my hands away from his neck settling them on his chest as his still linger around my waist “woah that was way better” i smile giddy as he re joins our lips “good luck my little vixen”

“MANTLE” he rolls his eyes “im coming coach im coming!” he yells giving me another kiss before rushing off to his team turning around and smiling giddily at your as a blush covers your face.

The panicked atmosphere seemed to consume you, muffled voices sounding determined yet rushed. There was a red spot in your vision, no doubt from blood that had gotten into your eye, and it was covering the view from your left side. It was hard to tell what was hurting, your brain only knowing that something everything was.

A bag valve mask was placed over your mouth, attempting to adjust the rate of your breathing. You weren’t sure if it was too rapid or too slow. You couldn’t feel your heartbeat, you couldn’t feel your breathing, you couldn’t feel your own skin. All you could feel was air rush past as each person reached for equipment.

And then a face moved past the red spot in your vision, leaning over you and mouthing something to you with so much resolve, that you couldn’t look away. His eyes pierced into yours, breaking open whatever trance your body was in. You were sent gasping for air through the mask, and your ears opened up to the sound around you.
