Moana is in love with the world around her; this is seen from a very young age as she constantly interacts with the world. She is of a curious mind and sees things from different viewpoints than others. She isn’t quick to come to her own conclusions of the world, but is open to the ever changing patterns of the world outside of herself (Ne). She sees the larger picture beyond her society or the fear of the ocean many have. She is constantly looking for new and better ways to do things and that includes voyaging. From a young age she sees there is a whole world outside her village and her island. She needs to go out and learn about it.
She has classic Ne moments of discovery filled with enthusiasm that is contagious to the viewer. When she comes upon a new idea she lights up with excitement seeing the continual potential. We see this when she comes upon the ships, especially. Notice though, she isn’t one for details. She had the idea of setting sail and of discovery, but she never thought to learn to sail before her departure. She never really thinks her actions through before jumping to them.
Now, there is a possibility to argue that she reflected on leaving for quite a while before voyaging into the great blue yonder, but I disagree with this. She always wanted to go out to the sea, the only reason she didn’t is because her father said no. Even then she was rebellious and looking for a sign to leave. When she makes the choice to leave it is quite spontaneous and not thought through. She didn’t really reflect on the consequences of her expedition nor did she prepare for her trip in any way. She didn’t learn sailing, or pack much. She acted first and in Ne improvisation fashion hoped she could just adapt as she goes and figure it out later. She is not a composed J type, but a restless Ne dominant craving new experiences.
SECONDARY INTROVERTED FEELING: Fi
Her Fi is secondary so it is often a tool for her Ne. Her judgments are heavily influenced and shaped by her Ne experiences. In addition, her Fi can only judge based on her own experiences. Hence, why she doesn’t get why her father judges the sailing into the sea based off of stories and past experiences. Her Fi is not conceptual like Fe, nor does she use dom/aux Ni/Si to learn from these stories or take them to heart. She hasn’t experienced the sea and doesn’t see why a little danger should get in the way of a new future.
However, her Fi does make her alert to the judgement of her father. It is not the fear of disharmony (Fe) that this Fi user is feeling. She is feeling out her Ne ideas on people around her to see if her ideas (Ne) would be accepted. At no point does she agree with him nor believe in her heart that her societal duties should come first (Fe). Let us take a closer look at her lyrics in How Far I’ll Go:
I know everybody on this island, seems so happy on this island Everything is by design I know everybody on this island has a role on this island So maybe I can roll with mine I can lead with pride, I can make us strong I’ll be satisfied if I play along But the voice inside sings a different song What is wrong with me?
We see she is aware of her society and the role she is supposed to take on. You don’t need to be a dominant Fe or secondary Fe to notice something like this. Fe would take her society and role into play in her decision making, but she explicitly doesn’t in these lyrics. She listens to the “voice inside.” This decision making process has nothing to do with her social role, her family role, etc. It has to do with her inner self, her Fi. She throws social expectations to the wind in order to make her choice!
An Fe user would not feel like they have to play the role, the very role would be instrumental in their sense of identity.
TERTIARY EXTRAVERTED THINKING: Te
It is her Te, not Fe as many think, that pushes Moana to accept her father’s and societies priorities over her own. At least for a while… She gets the rationale that her father is looking out for her and her people. That in a practical way he is making the best choice he can and she respects that. She even tries to “play along” for him. Eventually though, her Fi overrides this and she takes off on her own journey. In her heart though, she cannot fake it for him any longer. Her Fi rises as she has to be true to herself. How her father wants her to rule and take on her role is not how Moana does things.
INFERIOR INTROVERTED SENSING: Si
Moana has a disregard for the rules of her people and how things have “always been.” The more her father tries to stop her from using her Ne, exploring the world and ever-changing-ness of it, the more motivated she is to disobey. She feels that her father is tying her down, despite his best intentions. This pressure to control her is a major motivator in her defying him and his rules. His constraints are on her very freedom and sense of self. Living the way he wants would not only get in the way of her Ne freedom, but it wouldn’t be true to who she is, her Fi.
It is interesting because ENPs often get confronted with the fact that they prefer the expedient choice over (Ne) the honorable one (Si). And this tension is very big in Moana’s story, but comes full circle. Her disregard of her father’s wishes and his way of life for their people is Ne overcoming Si, but she discovers that the way of life that she sees as new and exciting is in fact the true way of her people. The very things she disregarded, traditions, were the exact thing she was really looking for. This is true of all inferior functions for us all! We are just uncomfortable with our inferior function and something in our life must push us to confront and overcome our fears of our inferior function. For Moana, she had to explore her freedom and the world to come full circle. To see the responsibility she has to her people and the value of traditions. Her Ne helps her come to terms with her Si, as she sees that the new isn’t always in conflict with the traditional.
J’t’aime. Et t’me manques. Et aussi, à jamais.
Dominant Function, Introverted Feeling, Fi: As a dominant function for Iroh this works inward and is far more experiential than many like to admit. Fi guides Iroh like any other Fi dominant by perceptions that can’t really be explained. It is why IFPs are known as wanderers. Iroh is guided most by what “feels right.” He lets this gut feeling, that many would call intuition (not in an MBTI context), guide where he goes, his actions, and who he helps.
Fi is focused on moral decisions that unlike Fe, are not directed by any laws and social obligations, but are formed separately from such community influences. Iroh’s morals are not shaped by the Fire Nation or any nation’s ideas of morality or social acceptability, but are formed by his own subjective experiences of simply being a human being. Iroh will always ignore structural factors and put human values first. He doesn’t care what nation rises or falls as long as the human values he prizes come first. It is part of what helps guide Iroh to see past nations and teach Zuko how the elements that divide us, actually connect us. In his history we know that a major pivot for him and where his Fi truely began to shine was with the loss of his son. He no longer conformed to his nation or any nation for that matter. He saw a lack of human values and learned from this experience.
Fi also has a focus on empathy on a very individual level. It is what leads INFPs like Iroh to focus on helping people one on one rather than trying to alter society as a whole (Fe). The Fi strategy is more pushing one pebble and watching the ripples expand and change the waters of humanity rather than an Fe approach that thinks on a bigger societal and structural scale. Hoping to create waters that change and reach the individual pebble.
It is important to keep in mind that Fi dominants need their outer and inner realms to be connected and one. It is why Fi dominants are known as artists and writers. Whatever their inner and outer worlds are, they must be one. A painter can do this in how they become one with their art. But this does not mean that IFPs must be creatives in this way. The fundamental piece that connects them all is not the creative aspect, but their need to have oneness with their inner and outer worlds. Iroh is quite a healthy INFP and has achieved this. We see this physically manifested in how he can walk in and out of the spirit world without even being the Avatar. We see this manifest itself in how he is a superior fire bender who uses his calm connected energy instead of unbalanced anger as his source. This oneness is what creates an adaptable Iroh who is willing to go with the flow. Who is able to have some tea rather than get in a tussle or to teach a robber how to properly use a knife rather than attack him.
Auxiliary Function, Extroverted Intuition, Ne: Fi cannot properly function working alone and needs the auxiliary function to ground inner judgments to the outside world. Iroh uses Extraverted Intuition to relate and interact with the world around him. Iroh doesn’t relate to the world in a physical or concrete way (Se), but through patterns and mental impressions of meaning. In plainer words that apply directly to Iroh, he connects with the world through seeing the potential of what could be, rather than what is. We see this way of engaging and interacting with the world better when contrasted with Zuko (ISFP, using Se not Ne). Both types see possibilities, but Zuko is focused with what is in front of him, of what he can achieve now. Iroh see potential in Zuko and Aang. He sees beyond the horizon.
This combined with Fi is what makes some mistype Iroh as ENFJ. Both types can help guide others but for what means that is the differentiating factor. THe ENFJ (Tenzin fro Legend of Korra) try to help an individual reach a potential that society will accept, but Iroh the INFP focused on the other’s inner world just they focus on their own. Iroh looks at values that connect us in an essential way. His mentoring of Zuko of helping Zuko realize his full potential is not for the purposes of helping Zuko find his place accepted in any society, but to help Zuko truly connect with his inner world. He does not care if Zuko is accepted by others, but only on Zuko as an individual who is accepted by himself.
Tertiary Function, Introverted Sensing, Si: The tertiary function can show itself in many ways. It is more obvious in an unhealthy type as they use it instead of their secondary in order to cope with the stress of the inferior function. However, as said before, Iroh is a very healthy INFP when we see him and so his Si may not seem so obvious.
So instead we see Si appear in subtler forms for Iroh. One way is in his more conservative lifestyle. This doesn’t mean politically, but that he is more of a minimalist. He does not put much stock in material goods and is able to not only live but prefer a more vagabond lifestyle. Si can also focus on honing on the bodily self which we see in his mastery of bending. The most crucial part we see Si in Iroh is his ability to not repeat the past in order to be his truest self. We see this in his work with Zuko. He doesn’t want to lose Zuko like he did his son. This is a prevailing motif throughout his arc. He isn’t stuck in the past like many believe that Si pushes people toward, but he is informed and influenced more from his past because of this.
Inferior Function, Extroverted Thinking, Te: We all fight and try to work with our inferior functions. This tension can stress us and it can guide us on both conscious and subconscious levels. Iroh is at a point in his development that he doesn’t fight his Te because he has healthy Ne development and is able to acknowledge objective principles to a point without forgetting the unconditional human values. By not denying Te Iroh is not an unhealthy INFP who is too subjective that simply what he likes and is comfortable with is what is right, instead he is able to keep with his Fi without losing sight of the actual world outside of himself. Thereby he is able to change hearts and minds by being himself inside society instead of having to actively change others to align with himself. Basically, Te and Ne help ground Iroh in the real world without getting blinded by his purely subjective Fi function.
Hi, I've been wanting to ask this question for a REALLY long time but I've been having trouble with my tumblr and gmail, and just got it fixed. Anyway I really LOVE your typings and just wanted to ask why Trafalgar Law was typed as an ENTP? I'd just like to know how you analyzed him and found it interesting that you chose ENTP, since he's usually typed as an INTJ, ISTJ, or in some cases an INTP. Thanks for taking the time to read this, also you just keep doing you honey! 👍
Trafalgar Law: ENTP [One Piece] A Glimpse
Dominant Ne: Law looks outward first. I don’t know where this introverted observation is coming from. He lives in a world of potentials, of what could be. This is instrumental in how he uses his powers. He comes from different angles than most in a fight or simply his observations as he makes patterns and connections others normally wouldn’t think of. This is how him and Luffy (ENFP) are quite similar. They shock many with their fresh, new, innovative approaches to being pirates.
Because Law always sees the constantly changing patterns around him, he also constantly tries to change his plans as he goes. This Ne route is ultimately what leads him down some poorly planned paths. This is why he doesn’t come close to the intricate planning of an INTJ or the consistent follow through of an ISTJ. He also doesn’t have INTP focus, he is so preoccupied with the changing world around him first (Ne), he needs the thrill of the action. INTPs don’t and only engage when pure logic is at play, they don’t need the stimulation.
Secondary Ti: Unlike Luffy who is people focused and idealistic, Law is a strategist. Combined with seeing potentials this is what makes Law the opportunist that we see. His Ne makes him see the potentials in the moment, and his Ti within a situation sees the logical adjustments that need to be made in the moment in order to reach his end goal. He does not have Te logic which is conceptual and linear. Law is quite tactile and adaptable, Ti.
Tertiary Fe: Law isn’t the best with people. He can display social behavior to get truces and so forth, but they are rarely genuine. He also uses his Fe for approval in an unhealthy manner. His relationships are an emotional point for him that he tries to keep deep down. Instead of reflecting inward on what he can do for others and his personal responsibility to them, he looks outward hoping for quick less meaningful signs of approval. We got this when he was very young and joined Donflamingo.
Inferior Si: Law has little respect to past ways of doing things. He doesn’t see the integrity and meaning that others do. The world is constantly changing and we should change with it. His Ne in conflict with his Si is what pushes Law to be part of the New Generation of pirates that others feel and don’t know what to do with. He doesn’t care for how things were and wants to strike out against it, creating a new future.
At the same time he is in a search for something consistently meaningful in his inner life, something that stands true in the ever changing world. This is when his past comes into play. He holds onto the worldview and truths that Corazon bestowed on him. Reminding him of solid truths in life of love and family.
However, his Ne pulls him from his Si throughout his life. As soon as anyone tries to tell him what to do, put an expectation on him, etc. he pushes against it, sometimes just to prove them wrong. Ne-Si tension mixed with Ti focus on strategy and competition it is no wonder Law finds himself in conflict a lot throughout his life.
Sal kf? Cum imi recomanzi sa incep o discutie cu ea? Ma semnez ₧₧₧ ca sa imi recunosc mesajele. :)) ₧₧₧
Salut. Păi, te cunoști cu fata respectivă, nu? Ce ar fi să începi cu “bună, ce faci?”, nu “kf?” Absolut totul începe cu aceste cuvinte.
Some interesting things I picked up on Eric Harris’s AOL profile screenshots:
1. Eric’s Computer
Eric used a Pentium 75 computer. It was a good computer to play computer games on, although he apparently later got a different computer or improved this one’s system.
2. Nil Sine Numine
This translates to “Nothing without the deity” in Latin, which is printed on the seal of the state of Colorado. Eric listed it under his location under one profile.
3. Semper Fidelis
Another Latin phrase, meaning “always faithful” or “always loyal”. In the USA, this is best known as the motto of the United States Marine Corps, which is most probably the reason Eric placed it under his profile.
4. Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum
Another very popular Latin phrase, translating to “If you want peace, prepare for war.” Eric also created a graphic for this which was used on one of his websites.
Both the cognitive functions start with an ‘S’ which stands for ‘Sensing’ or ‘Sensation’. Basically S determines how we perceive the physical world, this counts for our body language as well.
Si stands for Introverted Sensing or Introverted Sensation. Because the S function is introverted, it means that the way you perceive using Si will be subjective. For example, if you are a bodybuilder and you look at a fitness model you would consider that person ‘skinny’ as an Si user. Because that person is in ‘your’ physical perception not a muscular person.
Si is very controlled and may seem ‘unnatural’ to others. An Si user is constantly ‘aware’ of their physical movements. As an Si user you are by default more sensitive than an Se user and you might find it hard to learn to do physical movements you have never done before or sense new sensation in the current moment. But in the other hand Si is keen to physical-mastery, as practice literally makes perfect. Si has an excellent (muscle) memory. If an Si practices enough and regularly, the user may be able to move or sense almost perfectly and consistently.
Si can be recognized by it’s closed posture. They are less aware of what others may sense, but base their perception purely on their own physical experience. For this reason, heavy Si users tend to live in the past, lean towards rules and tradition, and deeply value safety and security. Compared to Se users, Si users seem more ‘mature’ and ‘parent-like’.
Profiles with Si in their top 4 cognitive functions (from highest to lowest) are: ISFJ/ISTJ, ESFJ/ESTJ, INFP/INTP and ENFP/ENTP.
Se stands for Extraverted Sensing or Introverted Sensation. Because the S function is extraverted, it means that the way you perceive using Se will be objective. For example, if you are a bodybuilder and you look at a fitness model you would consider that person ‘fit’ as an Se. Because that person is in a ‘general’ physical perception a muscular person.
Se is very natural that may seem ‘energetic’ to others. An Se user is usually not ‘aware’ of their physical movements, they just do it. As an Se user you are by default less sensitive than an Si user, unless it is a total new sensation. An Se user will perceive new sensations much faster than an Si user, which makes them seem more physically ‘sensitive’ but they actually are not. That being said, Se’s are the masters of improvisation. Having to improvise with physical movements you have never done before and adapt to the current situation is what Se excels at. Although in the long term they will eventually be outclassed by the Si’s extraordinary (muscle) memory. This is why Se tends to be in a constant search for new things to do or experience.
Se can be recognized by it’s open posture. They are very aware of what others may sense, which makes ‘performing’ or ‘impressing’ others very natural. Heavy Se users tend to live in the current moment, ignore rules and tradition, and value the ‘thrill’ of new experiences. Compared to Si users, Se users seem more ‘trendy’ and ‘fun-loving’.
Profiles with Se in their top 4 cognitive functions (from highest to lowest) are: ESFP/ESTP, ISFP/ISTP, ENFJ/ENTJ and INFJ/INTJ.
Deci e o poveste cam lunga .
Hi, could you explain why exactly Rapunzel isn't ENFJ and why she is ENFP, please? I can't find clarity about that and I think you might be able to explain this to me :)
Rapunzel: ENFP [Disney’s Tangled]
As someone who once typed her as an ENFJ I get the confusion. Even though functions of an ENFP and ENFJ once broken down are quite different their combinations can make them easy to confuse as their outward behavior can look identical at times.
Dominant Extraverted Intuition, Ne: Rapunzel first looks outward towards the world seeing constant possibilities. Her tower is covered in her moving from hobby to hobby. This may seem like what we would all do trapped in a tower, but indeed it isn’t. Notice she doesn’t perfect anything but moves from thing to thing. But more importantly the world is full of meaning and potential.
Secondary Introverted Feeling, Fi: This is the crucial function to differentiate ENFJ and ENFP for Rapunzel. Fe and Fi are both people focused, but Fe deals in societal terms and human behaviors. Fi, what Rapunzel has, is more individually focused. Her Ne sees potential and her Fi directs her to see potential in people. This is why she helps people with their dreams. But on a more personal level, especially with Eugene.
Now, ENFJs also help people. But their focus is different as they try to help people on their journey’s in society. Of discovering their roles. Meanwhile, an ENFP is trying to help people fulfill their possibilities.
Tertiary Extraverted Thinking, Te: Rapunzel has quite a healthy tertiary function. It helps her prioritize her life and others. She knows what the important things are in life and makes sure they take priority.
Inferior Introverted Sensation, Si: For Rapunzel in Tangled her inferior function takes the form as a goal setter. She is looking for that thing that created concrete meaning in her life. She thinks it is the lanterns but it turns out to be finding a home in Eugene and her parents. In all her Ne possibilities her Si balances in trying to find that steady thing in her life.
Dominant Function, Extraverted Thinking, Te: We see Hermione’s dominant function from the very beginning in her behavior, how she goes about being a student at Hogwarts, and in her social interactions.
Hermione is a stickler for order and people fulfilling their societal roles. She feels the right way to be a student is to follow the rules and fulfill one’s student responsibilities. She looks down on those that flaunt the rules and think they are exceptions to the order at Hogwarts. This includes her friends Harry and Ron. This doesn’t mean she doesn’t like them, but she is often annoyed and struggles to see the logic and reasoning behind their lack of taking responsibility. They procrastinate their homework, they generally don’t study, etc. She hates that they think they don’t have to do the work but they can get undeserved credit.
Te has social rules and principles that create expectations. For Hermione these are showing up on time, getting your homework done, really doing the work yourself, and really contributing to the system within your role, whatever that role might be. A huge part of this we see is that Hermione pushes to have knowledge. For her it isn’t for the sake of knowledge but her duty as a student. She assumed that was what everyone felt obligated to do before even coming to Hogwarts. That it was the expected way to prepare: by filling yourself with knowledge of the school and what they were to study in the coming fall.
We also see her form of Te logic most contrasted in her encounters with Luna Lovegood’s Ti logic. Luna’s Ti is open to the unknown and the unpredictable, but Hermione’s is more conceptual and based in hard evidence. Her Te logic does not open her to ever accept Luna’s theories of other creatures not proven and published and respected articles in the Wizarding World. She is absolute in her certainty that Luna is wrong. Hermione could be persuaded but she needs hard proof and not just a fellow student’s conjecture. Luna’s Ti logic–that is open to the unknown and the unproven–seems irrational to Hermione’s Te–that needs to work with objective, proven principles.
Hermione often comes off as much more emotionally intense than she actually feels because of her dominant Te. She seems severe to Harry and Ron when they first meet her. She is very outspoken and articulate in her thoughts and opinions. You will always know what Hermione thinks on a matter whether you want to or not, especially if she thinks you are wrong. Because her Te is a judging function, extraverted, and dominant she comes off in the first impression as closed minded and extreme in her views. Like how she writes off mystical things even being in the magical universe. She doesn’t believe in Luna’s creatures nor in Divination. Such endeavors seem impractical and therefore fruitless. Her judgment always comes down first and then later she reflects with her Introverted Sensing–her perceiving function–leaving her to appear more closed minded than her ISTJ counterparts. The fact that people see her this way, see her as angry all the time, is actually shocking to her as it is to all ESTJs. When she and other ESTJs makes these judgments and come off this way it is coming from a very rational place and their Fi being inferior they despise arguments and judgments that appeal on the emotional level. She doesn’t see herself as coming from an emotional place when she is arguing with Ron and Harry, but as the rational one of the group dealing with very emotionally driven individuals.
As addressed before, Te deals in principles, and as a dominant Te user Hermione strongly believes in these principles and is unafraid to tell others how they should live their lives in accordance to these principles. She will always tell Ron and Harry how they should act, how to be better students, etc. She keeps these two in line and wishes they would have their lives together more and live up to their responsibility to the House, to the School, and to the Wizarding World at large. When they are flaking or goofing around when they should be applying themselves, Hermione is perturb with their behavior because of their disregard to the systems in place and the principles they uphold. Because of this mentality, this sense of responsibility and honor, Hermione is able to make hard decisions for the larger systems. She is able to be self-sacrificing because her mind is on those around her, the system around her more specifically, before it is on herself. The system, whatever it is, comes before her own self interests. This is seen most in her bravery to wipe her parents’ memories of herself in order to restore the rightful order of the Wizarding World and keep them safe. Her parents remembering her was not more important than her mission to restore the system.
Auxiliary Function, Introverted Sensing, Si: For many ESTJs they don’t fully realize their Si until their Te no longer helps them deal with a situation. This is why Hermione, the rule follower, becomes the rule breaker in her adventures with Harry and Ron. When Hermione sees things being unfair or unjust, when her Te fails her and the rational no longer helps her solve a problem, she discovers her Si. This is why ESTJs can make such great advocates and what inspires Hermione to create S.P.E.W. It is not the Fi function the pushes her to this, but Si. Her Si takes in immediate and subjective data. This is Dobby for her. She sees his individual perspective and she isn’t an ESTJ drone, as many stereotype ESTJs. Her Si allows her to see things outside of her Te logic and rationale. She engages in her Si, she sees immediately in front of her someone who needs her help, or in the case of the the House Elves, a peoples who need her help. But, being a Te user, instead of rebelling against the system she is an advocate who fights for the House Elves’ inclusion in the system. She doesn’t turn her back on the Wizarding World or have a fight “the man” mentality. She wants to inform people with her Te-Si knowledge. She wants to represent all the House Elves and their plight for them to be equals within the larger system.
Si as stated before deals with the immediate and subjective data that is separate from the rational categories that Te deals with. It is why it is such a helpful companion to Te, for balance. They play into one another a lot. As an Si user Hermione prefers actions, her own and others. What this means has a couple different forms. For one, everyone should put in time and work to be deserved of any recognition. This is why she is so angry with Harry in The Half-Blood Prince. It isn’t that he is better at her in the class, but how he is getting recognition in the class. Not only is he defying the directions in the book, but they aren’t his own improvements on the potions. It is a short-cut, a cheat. That is why although she is rational in her fear of things written in the book–that her Te-Si struggles with trying these unproven and unchecked recipes and spells–but there is this impression of jealousy in the way she attacks Harry for using the book. He hasn’t worked hard for the grades he is getting and that isn’t how the system should work. No one deserves recognition for something if they have not worked for it and deserved it.
The other part of this is that the way she helps people is in concrete forms of action. She will do parts of Harry and Ron’s homework or she tries to organize their lives. Tell them when to work on something, etc. This comes from a place of genuine caring for her. This is how she shows she cares without having to get touchy-feely about it. From sharing and imparting knowledge to others she is helping and caring for them. That should be enough to show someone you care. It is also how she reads that others care about her. It is part of why she doesn’t see that Ron does have feelings for her. They are speaking two different functional languages as Hermione is a sensor who needs people to show they care and Ron is an intuitive who simply doesn’t operate in that kind of way. His head is too far up in the clouds and he finds Sensor activities to be dull. He makes this clear a lot, which makes Hermione think he definitively doesn’t reciprocate her feelings. He is so in his Ne he can’t see what is clearly in front of him.
Tertiary Function, Extraverted Intuition, Ne: We see Hermione’s Ne most when she is unhealthy and not engaging in her Si. This is what makes her hard for Harry and Ron to be around. When she can’t see from another’s perspective and is stuck in her Te, she resorts to her Ne, which also faces outward. This reassures her that she is right in being bossy. She has to point out what others are doing wrong and only she knows what the right thing is. It is why Harry has a tough time telling Hermione things when he knows she will judge him and not see from his point of view. But at the same time Harry knows he needs it sometimes (his Te being inferior as an ISFP).
However, Ne does have an upside for Hermione. It is what helps her relax and have fun. Dealing with possibilities and not the concrete reality are a nice vice for her from time to time. It is probably the thing about Ron that appeals to her. But it is also that spark that helps Hermione be inventive in crisis situations. Although she doesn’t naturally go against the rational and the proven, her Ne makes her innovative when she needs to be, thinking outside of the box in order to help the gang survive. She uses her Te to analyze what has and hasn’t worked on their past adventures. Her Si deals with the concrete data of what is needed, and her Ne helps her innovate new solutions for their future adventures. This is what makes her so prepared in The Deathly Hallows. She has her magic purse and has every book and resource they may need on their mission to take down the Horcruxes. She needed all three functions: Te, Si, and Ne.
Inferior Function, Introverted Feeling, Fi: Because of her Introverted Feeling being at the bottom of the stack, she is not comfortable with her own feelings and often has a hard time sifting them out. Her focus is on the outer world and not herself. She is uncomfortable actually talking about her feelings and prefers a rational verbal approach to things. Her elusive Fi is what makes her more controlling at times, because if she can put together her outside world, maybe her inner self will follow. However, that plan is usually a destructive one and is why as a healthier ESTJ, Hermione doesn’t try to escape her Fi for long. She realizes that there is only so much she can control and by being her best self she doesn’t have to be in everyone’s business. She can help others by being her happiest self, being a rational advocate. Hermione really finds this in administrating for Dumbledore’s Army. Her Si helps her see that Umbridge’s system defies the Hogwarts system she loves and helps her with the needed details to keep the D.A. afloat and secret, her Te loves to organize the group and makes her great at implementing order with the D.A., her Ne gets to have some fun coming up with new ways to evade Umbridge. Her Fi is helping her realize that doing these things is enough and fits her well. She doesn’t need to be over-domineering or controlling. She finds that just letting go, being herself makes her an unstoppable force.
Fi is also a personal moral compass that works separately from the external world. It can conflict with Te or make an ESTJ one of the strongest advocates for a cause who not only has the moral aspect, but can get things done. When I said it wasn’t Fi but Si that helps her create S.P.E.W. it was a little lie. Si is what helps her perceive the injustice and see from the perspective of the House Elves, but it is her Fi the judges separately from the Te system and principles that put them in that disenfranchise position in society in the first place. But the judgement is where the Fi stops, because she uses her Te to fight for them, she appeals to the rational and represents the House Elves. But as stated before, isn’t asking for the whole system to be brought down nor does she find the system (Wizarding Society) as a whole to be terrible, but simply needs to improve to operate at it’s best. She isn’t an ENTJ improving on the system at the helm, but an ESTJ working within the system to make the changes. Hence, why she becomes the head of Law Enforcement. She can feel for the oppressed, but can negotiate the systems and use her wealth of knowledge to work within a system to bring about change. Classic ESTJ.
Bref, je me suis lancée !
Dominant Function, Introverted Feeling, Fi: Castiel is a very different angel from the rest and this comes from being an Fi dominant with inferior Te. (More on inferior Te below). Fi is a very subjective, individualistic, and experiential function. Castiel is the rebel angel because his first instinct is to judge from his own experiences. He doesn’t obey or follow the laws of the angels first. He will if he agrees with them, but we see he clearly doesn’t. He changes his mind and adapts as he experiences new things, new sensations, new experiences in general with the Winchester brothers. What seems right before he starts to question. It simply doesn’t “feel right” to him anymore. Hence, the start of the relationship he has with the Winchester brothers in their anarchy against mythical forces.
Fi focuses on fundamental human values and are prone to more of an idealism than the moral dealings of Ti. Fi for Castiel is seen in how he deals differently with each individual human, how one human doing a good thing is beautiful to him. He doesn’t adhere to Angel rules and principles of how to judge and deal with humans and being on earth. He handles each situation as unique and judges in the moment. Fi has an emphasis on that free will. The very thing that separates him from the rest of the angels. He doesn’t think Dean and Sam should conform to the plans of the angels, but can make their own path. He becomes a defender of free will for everyone, including himself.
Fi being prone to idealism is also very prone to self doubt as a result. This is what centers on the beginning of his character arc. As an angel his Fi gave him this ideal of how things should be instead of how things are. When he finally is outside of his own head, his own romance of how things are on Earth and he lives in it helping the Winchesters these feelings of doubt set in for him. Life on earth and the angels do not uphold the ideals Castiel held close to his heart. He isn’t seeing reality reflecting his inner world. This can become disastrous for an INFP like Castiel who can’t reconcile with his inferior function of Extraverted Thinking. This combination leads to the darker path he takes.
Auxiliary Function, Extraverted Intuition, Ne: This function helps promote a healthier Fi outlook as it grounds Castiel in the objective experiences in the outer world beyond his Fi inner world of personal and circumstantial judgments. Se can work in much the same way for ISFPs. This secondary function helps balance out an IFP so they are not stuck in doubt, disappointment, and dissatisfaction that comes with being stuck in an inner world of Fi. What Ne specifically focuses on are more impression of experiences rather than the concrete experience. Castiel with Ne is trying to unpuzzle a deeper meaning in the world with Ne, but through his Fi lens.
This is what makes Castiel feel so lost. His Fi has led him to question and doubt the world as he conceived it before, he is questioning the authorities of the universe, especially as God is real big on one way conversations. If his Fi judgments are to be trusted and all the angels are wrong in their bringing on the apocalypse and using the Winchester brothers, then what is the meaning of angels in the first place. What is Castiel’s role in the big picture of the universe, what is the role of the Winchesters? What is the right thing to do? He is left looking for meaning and patterns that make sense of his Fi judgments.
Unlike an Ni-Fe combo that looks to help and understand people in a bigger picture, looking at society as a whole, Fi-Ne focuses on helping those who have fallen through the cracks of society and the system. Castiel feels for the demons, for the humans, for everyone his angel brothers and sisters seem to underestimate and dismiss. He finds meaning in helping those who are left behind.
Tertiary Function, Introverted Sensing, Si: Si is a very personal function that takes in concrete information that works desperately from society and any system therein. This can be a problem as Fi also works in a very personal and subjective form. So without proper use of Ne and Te to ground an INFP in the objective outer world, Castiel becomes rather unhealthy as he isolates himself and doesn’t use his Ne when he doesn’t get the answers he wants. He picks and chooses the Si concrete forms of information that fit his already made Fi judgments. This is what motivates his taking on the position of God and leading the angels. He starts to distribute divine punishment on humans. He works with the information that conforms to his judgments instead of using Ne to see outside of his own perspective.
Inferior Function, Extraverted Thinking, Te: As the inferior function Te is what irks Castiel the most, but what influences him just as much. He finds Te judgments, those based on proven principles to create rules and order to the world overall to be cold and heartless. They miss the individual experiences of each unique person. Castiel finds this mode of thinking to be incredibly imperfect with his Fi priorities. Order and structure should not come above individual freedom and happiness, no matter the greater purpose. Te structure tries to pin Castiel into a very specific role as an Angel, but his Fi challenges this pigeonholing. Castiel doesn’t see himself as being definable in this way. He is an exception. So he tries to erase this boundary imposed upon him by the angels, demons, and anyone else who wants to tell him who he is.
However, as much as this thinking irks him, the more he pushes it away and does not see this function inside himself the more Te impulses show themselves within his personality and way of going about things. Because of his Fi he finds the system to be corrupt, morally wrong, and leaving too many people behind. This is when he tries to take on being God. However, he starts imposing his own Te order on others. He becomes strict and cold while being motivated by Fi.
