Well Jojo is mostly about the adventure so should a characters gender/sexual orientation really matter? ((I'm sorry if I worded that weird)) to me it's mostly about the adventure even tho I do enjoy LGBT rep bbbbut I feel like JoJo isn't really the series for that type of thing. Plus araki is like a 60 year old man so I wouldn't expect him to have good rep for the LGBT community. I'm not trying to be rude In this ask so if it comes off like that I'm sorry :0

i mean….it doesn’t matter the genre bad rep is bad rep! if it has place for transphobic jokes and stereotyped gay characters it can surely have room for like….actually good representation. also criticism is criticism i’m not gonna let a person off the hook bc they’re older. however lgbt rights are presented differently in japan, so i have no right to speak on that field. most of my analysis was very western (mostly american) centric, so i may be wrong on a few points but overall, jjba still has issues with good rep

How to Write a University-level Essay

Heyo, so school is fast approaching, and seeing as Tumblr is made up of a lot of younger users who will soon be shipping off to college or university soon, I thought I would take it upon myself to help spread my knowledge of essay-writing. Essay-writing is my thing. I love it. I live for it. It’s how I make up for my shitty test marks, and still get by with an 85 average+ in University classes. I’m a historian by trade, so perhaps this information will seem a bit off from what you’re used to, but hopefully, It’ll help you out. If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me an ask.

1. Consider your question and find your thesis.

I know, I know. People always say, no! Never start with your thesis/intro paragraph! Go to the body!! Well i’m here to say forget everything you’ve been told. Forget that, forget the stupid hamburger shit they teach you, forget it all and start reading.

I ALWAYS start with my thesis. Why? Because you cannot make good paragraphs without knowing what you’re researching. You need direction, and a thesis is your map.

So, the question we’ll use shall be: What is one way in which the Union won the American Civil War?

Now remember, your thesis is your map. It shows you where to go, what to look for. The thesis is the heart and soul of all your work. You want a good, solid thesis. What does that include, you ask?

  • An idea
  • A reason for said idea
  • Evidence to support said reason, and thus validate the        idea.

So, lets do an example. Let’s say I’m writing on the use of media during the American Civil War. I like photography, and wrote a paper on this in my second year, but im gonna be doing this example freehand(idk where I put that essay lol) so lets work with how I got an A+ on that paper. This will be my idea:

“Photography during the American Civil War influenced the war’s outcome in the Norths favour.”

This is VERY vague. This is an example of a thesis in bloom! Let’s take it further. Look at the above. What questions would you have from this thesis?

  • -Who was taking photos at that time?
  • -Why did it influence the outcome?
  • -How did it influence the outcome?
  • -Who consumed photography as a media at that time?

This is where you STOP, and start the next step.

2. Research

Start your basic research with your idea, and the above questions in mind. Look at libraries, ask your professor or TA or librarian, or just do some basic google searches to get to know the subject(but for the love of god if you include a google link in your citation I will personally hunt you down and castrate you.)

I like to start with the basics of any inquiry: WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY, HOW. Who was taking photos? Where were they displayed that caused influence? ect…These, in relation to your beginner thesis, will help guide you in what form your thesis will take.

Once you’ve finished that, and have a general feel for the time period, go back to your thesis.

3. THESIS 2.0

Go back to your original question: What is one way in which the Union won the American Civil War? Now look at your thesis again. It’s too vague, isn’t it?

As you can see, our original thesis was too vague to be a real thesis. So, we NARROW IT DOWN using our WWWWWH progress we focused on during early research!

“Photography during the American Civil war influenced the war’s outcome by providing a visual for ordinary citizens about the horrors of war, and thus helping to increase donations and awareness to the cause.”

Great! But once again, too vague! Questions that may arise include:

  • Who was taking the photos
  • Evidence for donations?
  • Evidence for social awareness?

So, we NARROW IT DOWN again. I’m going to use Andrew Gardner’s photography during the Civil war, as he was one of the most famous and influential at the time.

“Andrew Gardner’s photography during the American Civil war influenced the war’s outcome by providing a visual for ordinary citizens about the horrors of war, and thus helping to increase donations and enlistment in the Union through awareness to the cause…”

The above then gives us the following(why and how are sometimes grouped together):

  • Who: Andrew Gardner
  • What: Photography helped the north win the war.
  • Where: Union-aka northern states
  • When: American Civil War
  • Why/How: Because Andrew Gardner’s photography raised social awareness through this new and budding medium

Use this sort of outline to guide you in the next step!

4. Now that we have a thesis, you need to do some more research and evidence gathering.

The way I like to do this is to go check out a few books from the library(look for text books in particular), and leaf through the index for matching terms. Our matching terms would be:

Photography, civil war, Andrew Gardner, media

From there, you read over the pages, and see if any of the info relates to your subjects. Copy down quotes, page numbers, book title, author, publishing date and publisher. You need these for your bibliography. Pick and choose relevant information. The filter for relevant information relies entirely on your thesis, because it decides what you need to be looking for—this is why I hate when people tell me to start writing paragraphs before I write a thesis! It’s simply impossible and counter productive, and will cost you hours in revision.

So, gather your information from the library, and cross-reference with peer-reviewed articles and data. For our thesis, we would need data on enlistment numbers in an area after a date of Andrew Gardner’s photography exhibit showcases. No matter what type of essay you’re writing, you can always back up your evidence with data, and it won’t hurt one bit. Don’t be afraid of the numbers, kids!

So, if we were to go back to our thesis, we could now expand on it like this:

“Andrew Gardner’s photography during the American Civil war influenced the war’s outcome by providing a visual for ordinary citizens about the horrors of war, and thus helping to increase donations and enlistment in the Union through awareness to the cause. An increase in  donations and enlistment in relation to exposure to Gardners work is seen in data/evidence point A, as well as in data/evidence point B, which will be fully outlined in the points below.”

This gives you an example of how to lead from a thesis, to your opening paragraph.

5. Data and Evidence Justifications–Paragraph making

This is the section where you can branch your essay into your data and evidence points you gathered in steps 2 and 4. You can have as many paragraphs as you like, just make sure your evidence and data is strong and supported. I personally like to work with my thesis copied and pasted onto the top of every page I write on. This keeps you on track, with your clear goal in mind, and will help you from straying. I will give you an example of how a paragraph might sound.

Andrew Gardner’s photography during the American Civil War became heavily influential upon the American population at the time, particularly the north, wherein which his work was showcased. The influence of Gardner’s photographic works is seen in the _____, which shows us that without the influence of Gardner’s media influence, war efforts and awareness may not have been as successful as they had been.

This is an alright opener for you to work with. The ___ is where you could put in your data point or evidence piece. The point of the paragraph is to show your support for your thesis by confirming it with evidence.

Your paragraphs should take this form:

  • Present, Confirm, Conclude, Lead.

You present your evidence, confirm its relation to the thesis and confirm the validity of the thesis, conclude by brief revision of evidence, and then lead into your next paragraph.

6. Conclusion

Your conclusionary paragraph should be a look-over of the above paragraphs. Restate your thesis, present a summarized version of your paragraphs(one or two sentences only), and perhaps take the time to look at your own views on the subject. An example might look like this:

“Taking a moment to step away from the above mentioned evidence, I believe it to be scholarly acceptable and even necessary to state my own views on the subject presented. In drawing conclusions, I felt that the above information was correct in that it presented a reality of the time period, in which photography was becoming a medium to be embraced by popular society. People were not only astounded by Gardner’s photographs on a social level, but also a technical level. The astonishment people held at seeing the war-torn battle fields spurred them into action, and even today can still present feelings of dread, fear and loss when looking at his photos…blah blah blah”

Why is it scholarly acceptable and perhaps necessary to state your views? Oftentimes, it is to reassure the reader of your own personal bias’, which exist whether you like them or not, to the subject at hand. Having a small tidbit on your own thoughts about your research ect, breaking away from the third-person droning of an essay can be refreshing and welcoming for a prof at the end of his stack of essay reading.

7. In summary

  • Thesis
  • WWWWWH
  • NARROW IT DOWN
  • Data and Evidence
  • Present, Confirm, Conclude, Lead
  • Self opinions/Conclude

All in all, do unique things. Professors love it when they come across something that’s not cookie cutter! Even if they present you with a list of essay topics, take the leap and ask them if you can do your own research topic!! Take risks with your essay writing, talk to your professors about what you want to do, and try to have fun with your research. I’ve written on everything from civil war photography to Disney princesses in american media, to the religious formation of idea of heaven and earth. Remember, so long as there’s credible, documented evidence, it’s possible to write about it.

Theo x Reader

Requested by Anon

Proof reading done by the awesome @joeynihil

“Theo?” You asked when you stopped next to him as he slyly rubbed up against you. “What’re you doing?”

“Nothing!” He almost squeaked which naturally had you suspicious that something was wrong worsening.

“Sure, I need to go and get my books from Stiles’ jeep I left them in there this morning.” You groaned and jumped when Theo grabbed you by the shoulders and shook you slightly.

“I can get them, I’m big and I’m bigger than Stiles so I can carry all the books you’ll ever own!” With that he let go of you and hurtled out of the building.

i don't wanna start a fight but i just want to know your honest opinion. should we support all jews even the racist ones, just because they're jewish? like all the people from israel who think it's great to exterminate brown people to get their land in the name of zionism? i don't think i could ever forgive them, because i can't support bigots, no matter where they're from. again i don't want to fight but i would like to read an opposing opinion. have a good day.

“it’s me again; i looked up ‘zionism’ on your blog and i just wanted to let you know that i have no quarrel with jewish people, like really the people, living their everyday lives, even the ones who happen to agree with zionism. i’m angry towards the ones who order the bombing, and the soldiers who will shoot brown civilians. but the people are innocent to me, they just have an opinion. i think jewish culture is way more decent than christianity, but it doesn’t lack faults is all.

Can’t support oppressors because they’re oppressed too. Will support someone who is Jewish if they face antisemitism, won’t support their racism. One form of bigotry can’t cancel another.”

“Do you think we should support all Jewish people even if they’re racist” is such an invalid question I literally don’t know where to begin

do we support all muslims, even the antisemitic ones? - oh wait, that’s a question nobody fucking asks, ever, because it’s weird and incomprehensible

I’m answering your question to the best of my ability but like… tbh the fact that you felt the need to ask it in the first place? antisemitism

  1. I don’t support anyone just because they’re Jewish just like I don’t support anyone just because they’re gay, I support Jewish people in the radical act of being Jewish in an antisemitic world. If somebody is being racist, I call them out (if it’s safe for me, which sadly, it isn’t always), but I don’t call them out despite them being Jewish? it’s got nothing to do with it. Judaism doesn’t have anything to do with racism, we all grow up in an inherently racist environment and have to unlearn things.
  2. There’s this idea that Jews=white and that is just… literally, factually wrong. More than 50% of Jews in Israel are brown (Mizrahi) themselves. That isn’t to say that Mizrahi Jews don’t face discrimination, because they do, but the situation in Israel is just… incomparable to America. It’s not white vs. brown, it’s Jewish vs. non-Jewish Arabs, and that’s a very complex situation. Not to mention conflating Jewish people with white people, our oppressors for literally thousands of years, is fucking antisemitic. (Again: Jewish people can be pale, brown, black, or Asian and I personally went to school with Jews of every supposed “type”. In Israel.)
  3. Aside from specific, isolated cases that are reprehensible in every way, nobody is going into Palestinian land and just killing people for no reason, nor are they bombing Palestinians for no reason. Historically, the IDF has been a defense army, and I will argue even in cases it technically attacked first it was still being defensive. It’s literally in the name: Israel Defense Forces.
  4. I know this is surprising, but there’s a huge group of Jewish people and Israeli citizens who - gasp - don’t think that we should killing Palestinians at all, including myself. But the fact that we disagree with and even hate the way our country is run doesn’t mean we invalidate its entire existence in the first place. If Israel stopped existing, half the Jewish population of the entire world would very suddenly be in incredible danger, and with nowhere to fucking go.
  5. Of course one form of bigotry doesn’t cancel another, but what antizionists are currently doing doesn’t actually fucking help. Instead of invalidating Israel - which just makes most Israelis take what they say with a cup full of salt - they should actively criticize it, work to change it. That’s what most Israelis do. We go to protests. We pay attention to laws. We vote. We get outraged. We try to make things better for everyone.
  6. Most importantly, this whole thing should never have been about Israel in the first place. Because Jews deserve to exist as Jews and we shouldn’t be interrogated on our opinions about Zionism and Israel to make sure we’re good Jews. We should be allowed to exist, out in the open, shouting: “We’re here, we’re queer, we’re Jewish” without having to answer for the crimes of other people who just happen to share an ethnicity and/or religion with us.

And that’s my answer. I might have gone on a small tangent somewhere.

You have a good day, too, anon. And don’t forget to call out antisemitism everywhere you go.

grantaire's like this hobo, hipster creature and dresses like a homeless person and no one asks him about it because you just don't so they just assume he's homeless but whenever the amis is faced with a financial problem he's just "ok ill handle that" and he actually owns an island or something

Heir to a corporate mogul is one of my favourite Grantaire headcanons ohmygod y’all don’t even know, just imagine everyone misunderstanding Grantaire even though he’s not exactly trying to hide his wealth, like:

“Where are you staying tonight?” // “I don’t know, we’ll see?”

And people assume he’s homeless, and taking turns crashing at a different friend’s house every few nights, but in actuality, he just isn’t sure which penthouse he wants to spend the night in yet, probably whichever one is closest to where he gets drunk at though?

When he shows up in a hella expensive suit for Feuilly’s art exhibition: “Dude, that suit looks dope? How much did you get it for?” // “I don’t know, I just took it?”

And they low-key assume he either 1) stole it, 2) borrowed it off someone, when really, he’s just rich enough to shop without having to check price tags?

Oooh, when he picks up the tab for the amis at a bar: “It’s fine, it’s really not much.” // “…..should we try to pay for this? I know R used to work here, but can he really get this much money written off?”

When really, Grantaire’s just passing his credit card to the bartender, not even bothering to ask for the bill, because it’s not like he’s the one paying his credit card bills, and really, this money is peanuts to his family.

um hi no offense but I just woke up in a cold sweat realizing that the regent doesn't have a name and I don't know what to do with my life

he does actually have a name most people don’t realize this but he does it’s “Please Punch Me In The Fucking Face”.

On a serious note though, I do think about this from time to time too. I wonder why Pacat didn’t name The Regent, but a part of me think she did it to further dehumanize him (??? if that makes sense?? i’m typing this out at like 3 am so there’s a chance this is all intelligible garbage) like to make him seem even more cold and unapproachable as a character.

There was a post going around a while back about Laurent being named after/having a similar name to The Regent which I had mixed feelings about, but overall I thought was interesting?? Pacat is very interesting when it comes to names because (from what I understand, which isn’t a lot) because sometimes her characters have names that represent them very well (see: Erasmus) and other times they don’t appear to at all?? of course I could just not be looking in the right place

Though, personally speaking, I’ve been mentally calling him Loghain in my head. Partly bc it starts with an L (since Auguste and Aleron both start with As?? so maybe The Regent’s name would also start with an L to parallel Laurent’s name in a twisted way) and partly bc I’m a huge dragon age nerd (in Origins Loghain betrays The King, his son in law, and leaves him to die in battle. After which declaring the group of people he also betrayed– the grey wardens– as traitors as well as lying to his daughter about the truth of what happened and proceeds to declare himself Regent)

JUGHEAD’S POV

it was another busy night at pop’s chock’lit shoppe.

booths were bursting at the seams as they celebrate the win of river dales very own bulldogs. i didn’t even need to go to the game to know that they’d won.

teenagers and parents hustle into the diner buying burgers and fries by the dozen. me? i sat in my usual booth with my usual oder; cheese burger fries and a chocolate milkshake, with of course my laptop.

i was busy typing up my newest lead that i didn’t pay any attention to the small girl that walked through pop’s doors and ended up at the front of my booth, fries and milkshake in hand.

“can i sit?” she murmurs shifting on her feet

i tilt the lid of my laptop down gesturing with my hands for her to sit, she smiles at me placing her food infront of her as she sips on her drink.

she studies me and i close my laptop completely glance at the small girl, she looked exactly like jellybean.

“everything okay?” she nods pulling books out of her back pack and plugging her headphones into her iPod.

i open my laptop and start typing again inspiration flowing through me. we stay like this for awhile, me working on my story and the little girl writing what seemed like english homework whilst bopping her head to the music that filled her earphones.

she sighs heavily causing me to look up at her “im holly (y/l/n)” i smile “jughead jones the third” she chuckles.

“theres three of you named jughead” she giggles her laugh carrying through the diner, the dinner rush was over and most of the booths were now empty. it was just us, pop and a few local stragglers.

“you miss holly remind me of my sister” she raises her eyebrows “can’t say the same about you- my sister is way cooler than you” she sass’ and i laugh.

“how old are you holly?” “I’m 10, you?” “17″ i reply stealing one of her fries “hey!” she sulks.

“my sisters 17 too, she steals my fries too” i nod smirking to myself

“her names (y/n) we just moved her from san fransico, how olds your sister?”

i close my laptop setting it aside “my sister is 10 years old same as you her names jellybean” she laughs again “is there three jelly beans too?” i shake my head “nope just the one and only”.

she pops a few fries in her mouth “can i ask you a few questions?” i chuckle “haven’t you just been doing exactly that?” she shakes her head.

folding my arms across my chest i decide to give in “fine, i’ll bite”

a take a swig from the saucer infront of me “are you writing about that dead kid?” i spit out my coffee choking slightly.

“yes or no?”

“yes”

“do you ever take that beanie off?”

“no”

“not even when you shower” she pesters

i lean forward “i even poop with it on” she giggles and makes a disgusted face.

“my turn” she nods

“what are you listening to?”

“music” i roll my eyes gesturing for her to go on “right now- all time low”

“why are you at a diner asking a stranger at 10pm personal questions?”

her eyes widen “wait your not a murder right?” i cock my eyebrow “maybe”

“my sister was supposed to come meet me here for dinner after she’d finished work that was” she pauses looking down at her watch

“3 and a half hours ago”

i brush my thumb against my lips “is that true?” she shrugs smirking mischievously to herself.

“do you want to use my phone to contact your sister?” she shakes her head frantically “NO”

i lean back in the booth smiling maniacally crossing my arms infront of my chest “so you sister doesn’t know your here?”

she sinks lower into the booth sipping her milkshake shamelessly

“she’s probably worried about you”

the younger girl looks up sadly before her eyes drift over to the entrance the bell chiming indicating a new customer “crap!” she ducks underneath the table hiding herself behind my legs.

“hey!” i complain as the girl hugs my legs.

i scoff and turn and see the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen walk through the doors of pop’s. her (y/h/c) was dripping wet from the downpour outside yet it still looked incredible.

her clothes hugged her figure as the water drops from the fabric to the clean tiles. her eyes scan the booths looking for someone.

she walks over to pop worry evident on her face “hey I’m looking for my little sister she’s 10 but this high, brown hair” she gestures with her hands “her names holly”

i clear my throat pointing to my booth, as the younger girls back pack and homework sprawled out on the table top.

she mutters a thank you before approaching my booth, she breathes a sigh of relief as she realises that the back pack indeed belonged to her younger sibling.

“you must be holly’s sister?” she nods rocking awkwardly on her heels “(y/n) (l/n) I’m sorry if she’s been bothering you- and you are?” she smiles down at me her cheeks tinting red in the warm diner.

“jughead jones-” i pause “the third” she giggles nd boy do i have to contain myself from drooling.

“there’s three of you named jughead?” she continues giggling covering her mouth and apologising “oh god I’m sorry i shouldn’t be laughing” i chuckle to myself smiling up at the girl.

“its fine, your sister actually said the exact same thing” she widens her eyes and drops to her knee spotting her younger brunette sister curled up at my legs.

“holly!” she scolds “get out and leave the poor boy alone” i try and hide my smirk.

“his name is juggie and he’s my friend” she retorts.

“its fine (y/n) honestly i have a little sister the same age, its harmless really” she shakes her had dipping back under the table.

“you give me no choice” i watch as the (y/h/c) girl moves under the table trying to grab her younger sister from underneath the table.

squeals fill the diner until holly pops out of the booth her sister trying to follow suit only to bash her head on the table and aggressively grab my thigh in the process of a line sentence of cussing.

i lean down to her offer my hand “you okay?”

she clutches her head with one hand and she grabs mine with the other allowing me to pull her up into the seat beside me.

“id like to say that karma for laughing at my birth name?”

she giggles still wincing in pain “atleast theres no gum in your hair” i muse smiling at the mystery girl.

“this day keeps getting better” she smiles sarcastically

“c’mon holz mums worried sick i need to get you home, so say goodbye to your new found friend and lets go. no more running away” she nods sadly rolling her eyes at her older sister.

“can we come back here tomorrow” she whines as the older girl packs away holly’s books into her backpack.

“i don’t know holly I’m already swamped in school work we can’t be coming here on a daily basis i can’t watch you all the time” the younger girl looks disappointed.

“i’ll be here” i speak up the two girls turning to look at me “if you don’t have the time you can drop her off and illl look after her for an hour or two”

she sighs looking at her sister as she stands on her knees begging her sister

“please please please”

she looks at me biting her lip “i don’t know holz”

holly’s face drops disappointment clearly evident on her face.

“you can come too, bring your homework if you feel up to it” she smiles at me before slipping out of the booth “i’ll think about it”

i nod a smile creeping on my face.

“c’mon holly say bye to jughead” she smiles at me giving me a fist bump before walking to her sister.

“thank you, for looking after her. i know not everyone is wired to be kind to a young lost girl. i owe you one”

“if you come tomorrow ill make it even” he says hopeful wanting to know more about the beautiful new girl.

“maybe, goodnight” she places her hands on her sisters holders and guides her toward the exit looking back one last time to send a small smile my way.

there was something about her and i couldn’t quiet put my finger on it but i had to know her.

everyone is gay: the sequel // evak & magnus

even and magnus are hiding something from isak.
(sequel to everyone is gay: the musical)

When both of their phones go off at the same time, it means either one of two things: 1) Eskild is telling them to keep the noise levels down, or 2) there’s a new message in the guys’ groupchat.

Since the closest contact they have with each other’s fun zones (at the present moment, at least) is Isak lying with his head in Even’s lap, Even can only assume it’s the latter.

Less Than Three DHJ Video Project

You’ve seen the title. Due to a previous shitstorm against David Haydn-Jones on Twitter and him being really hurt about it (see here), me and @wayward-mirage came up with the idea to make a video for him to show him how much we love and appreciate him

And for that we need your help!

Please send us your signs of love for him in forms of

  • a picture of you holding up a sign saying “We less than three you, David!” (you can decorate it however you want, or just any sign that shows you love him)
  • a small video around 5-10 seconds with a small message
  • a small text if you wish not to show your face
  • another picture or something that shows your love to him

If you wish to participate, send in your pictures, videos etc to this email

lttdhjvideo@hotmail.com

The deadline is Monday May 1st. I know it’s quite early but we shouldn’t drag this out for too long.

And please, even if you won’t participate, share this. On Twitter or whatever you like BUT don’t mention David. It should be a surprise.

Depending on how I get to edit, finish and upload it the video will be up Tuesday or Wednesday.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me here on tumblr or my twitter @queenxfheii or Toni!

Sakura loves sasuke and they're together, married, and have a kid. The author made his choice. The ship is canon and if they showed them interacting positively I would have supported it but IT'S SO BADLY WRITTEN. I should be given an actual reason to WANT sasuke and sakura to be together. And even if it's because SAKURA loves sasuke what has that done to her character? Clingy, desperate, whiny. Gaiden TRIED to make it seem all was okay but everything sasuke did was just brushed off.

Yeeeeepppp. I mean, like, check out @yomi-gaeru‘s Sasu//Saku doujin The Flower of Joy. Adorable much? And I know people make adorable fanon with the canon ending but the actual Kishimoto-penned Gaiden: 7th Hokage is just… awful. And it’s not in isolation, either, you gotta take it in tandem with the way Kishimoto chose to portray Sakura in 700, with Gaiden: Full Moon, and with every way these Boruto era works portray the original series’ female characters as adults.

And the defenders bleat that it’s a shooooooounen and of course it’s not a roooooooomance well no shit, but Kishimoto chose to write Sasuke having a shit relationship with Sarada and make that the focus of over 200 pages of bullshit, when he could have, you know, not done that? Who among you, SS fans certainly included, wouldn’t have rather read 200 pages of everyone in Konoha being happy together and facing an external threat together???? Yeah??????? Like, and I’m just spitballin’ here, the previous generation training the next generation according to whose abilities matched up the best, instead of Sasuke being all “yeah nice to meet you and all, Sarada, and I know you have the Sharingan and I’m the only other person alive who has one too, but I’m gonna make that kid that looks just like NARUTO my student 👀👀👀” Lord.

a quick little rant regarding gen content

hey it’s your friendly neighborhood fanfic writer here to have a fun discussion about gen fan content, why there isn’t more, and why (in my personal experience) just saying ‘we should have more gen content!’ won’t really get you that much more gen content

what is gen fan content? so glad you asked. gen content is content that has 0 romantic relationships! yup that’s it. gen = general relationships

(sidenote: this post is mostly going to be about fanfiction because i have the most experience there and also fanfic and fanart are treated and interacted with differently in fandom)

first off, if you go into any fandom’s gen tag on ao3, you’re probably also gonna find a lot of romance. that’s because you can choose more than one tag, and hey, even i’m guilty of it. but! that doesn’t mean gen content doesn’t exist

for a while now, i’ve been seeing posts about how people wish there was more gen content, or that fandoms should have platonic weeks, or that they just wish there was less romance in fan content. which are all valid things to want and talk about! but at the same time, we have to keep this in mind:

if you want more gen content, the easiest way to get it is to interact with gen content that already exists

what do i mean by that?

from my experience, with my own work and just from observation, gen works get less notice than works that aren’t marked as gen. meaning they get less kudos, less hits, and less general interaction

the reason for this is probably because fandom is usually very centered around shipping, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s really disheartening to see your hits/kudos/comments statistics on gen works in comparison to ship works.

even if something is really enjoyable to write, if people clearly like something else more, you’re more likely to create that as opposed to what fewer people are reading. you can tell people that they should be creating fan content because they love it, and they definitely do, but it’s very invalidating to watch the hit counter stop at a low number

so if you want more gen works, search them out

interact with people who create gen content! support them! comment on their work, reblog it, give it kudos, send it to your friends!

just saying you want more nonromantic content means nothing if you aren’t going to support those who make it

if you’re going to ask for gen works, you have to actually interact and notice the people who are already creating that content

platonic content already exists out there!! support the gen works that are already posted

if gen works stop being so ignored by fandom in comparison to their romantic counterparts, i have no doubt that you’ll find yourself seeing more and more of it in the tags

A real beauty

[[I saw a crap ton of ppl doing a “mer-May” thing where u draw a character as a mermaid/merman, so I thought I’d join in! I feel like an ass bc I doodled this instead of answering asks ripp. Sorry it’s not colored, you know me, I don’t really color in my art haha, I should work on that lol. Also thank you so much for 700+ followers I’m screaming!!!!]]

If I were to write a story that contained characters that were racially ambiguous or in a place where race didn't really exist (like with mermaids or human-like fantasy creatures) would the story be considered literature specific to my race even tho it doesn't necessarily contain race? I'm Korean and black.

Will my Literature be considered “[Insert Ethnicity] Literature” Despite Who/What I Write?

This could very well happen.

  • Libraries and bookshops may sort your fiction as “Ethnic/African American/whatever” literature no matter what the genre or subject matter because of your race alone. I’ve seen Authors of Color speak on this, that for having a diverse cast and/or just daring to publish while non-white despite genre or subject matter, their works are marked as “[insert group] literature”.
  • That isn’t a reason to avoid writing clearly defined racially diverse characters, as racial ambiguity is not necessarily proper representation (see Racial Ambiguity tag). Even human-like fantasy creatures can be ethnically coded by means of appearance, cultures, region, language, etc. something we’ve offered many resources for here as well.
  • You shouldn’t necessary feel you must publish anonymously or under a pen name for this reason either, if you don’t want to. You didn’t bring up this issue but it’s something worth mentioning.
  • In the case your work does get pushed into the “ethnic corner” and you’re uncomfortable with it, I believe you should reach out, and ask for it to be properly placed or labelled. I’d also suggest making your publisher aware of the issue too as they may have some solutions. I don’t have experience with this battle to offer much advice, unfortunately. Readers who do, feel free to share.

For some really good reading on the subject, check out N. K. Jemisin’s article “Don’t Put My Book in the African American Section.”

~Mod Colette

It’s a symptom of “white as default” in mass society. Because you’re an Author of Color, you’ll run into challenges like people thinking everything you write is autobiographical. It’s the same deal with women authors who write about women— books about boys are gender neutral, books about girls are marketed only to girls and it’s not recommended boys read them.

It’s not fun, but unless a whole bunch of Authors of Color go through the process of fighting it and speaking out about it, nothing’s going to change. Right now there’s still a belief that diversity is some bold political statement instead of just part of life, so we’ve got to make them realize it’s part of life.

But things are already changing a lot! Of course, my point of reference is Canadian bookshelves, where I find diverse gene fiction semi-routinely, not separated out by the fact it’s diverse (mostly LGBT+, but some PoC-centric stories, too).

The more of us out there telling stories where we’re reflected, the more integration will happen.

I never saw KakaSaku more than a student-teacher relationship. Can you give some meta about those two relationship? All these while I thought they were absolute crack lol

It’s definitely tongue in cheek, but basically what I and a lot of other KakaSaku shippers see is potential. Shippuden Sakura is her best self in her interactions with Kakashi–she doesn’t smack him around like Naruto, or become a submissive shaking mess like with Sasuke. Moreover, up until the war arc, Kakashi never really perceives Sakura for either who she actually is or who she’s capable of becoming. This is part of why the “but he knew her when she was 12?!?!?!” arguments don’t move me; he really didn’t know Sakura when she was 12.

Then in the war arc he sees her. And he just? Values her so much and the cheek brush? I’m a;dlfksjfa;sdlkf

Like whenever they’re interacting together they’re their best selves at that point and they just bring out the best in each other and THEY TOUCH ALL THE FRICKIN’ TIME, OK, EVERY OTHER SHIP IN NARUTO TALKS ABOUT EVERY SLIGHTEST TOUCHING BUT LOOK AT THESE TOUCHY TOUCHY BITCHES TOUCHIN’ IT UP

Like, Chouji x Karui, a couple who never interacted in the manga even once before 700, that is a crack pairing. KakaSaku isn’t a crack pairing. (Not that there’s anything wrong with crack pairings!!!!!)
