short concession

Often, I feel that I disappoint too many people for not being able to accept my full potential. Of failing to see myself through their eyes. Of not acknowledging my worth because I’ve been told many times long ago, that I wasn’t worth the effort by the wrong people. For many years, I’ve held myself accountable for all the poor choices done towards me shoving aside my need for reassurance, and dealing with the guilt of not being enough. For years, I believed that I had to apologize to people for what they thought of me. And now I’m finally learning that I need to forgive myself for that. I need to learn to forgive myself for feeling bad that other people can’t appreciate me for what I am.
—  Keen Malasarte, Only when I learn to love myself, will they value me. And I’m not really sure how long that’s going to take.

Eidos, directed by LJ D’Arpa is a simple yet haunting portrayal of a blind artist who is desperately attempting to sculpt the face of his dying mother. This Is She, directed by Tarik Karam is a film about a young woman moving into a new apartment. A Long Walk, directed by Chinonye Chukwu is a gripping narrative drama that begins innocently enough with a group of young boys playing basketball. Their game is interrupted by an unusual sight that eventually leads to an unfortunate tragedy. Based on true events, this film is a brilliant exploration of friendship, identity, and regret. She is a recipient of the prestigious Princess Grace Award and Princeton Hodder Fellowship.

Day 4: Uxbridge to Downtown Toronto

We left Uxbridge around 7:45 AM heading south on Main Street with a planned distance of somewhere around 90km.  The storm from the previous night had taken down many trees so there were some blocked roads.  For us, this was delightful because the roads were pretty much deserted.  We did find the actual Trans Canada Trail head south of town, but it looked under-developed.  That combined with the storm meant it appeared washed out, and pretty much impassable.

We continued down Concession Road 7 heading south towards Ajax.  This was one of the nicest surprises of the trip and was completely delightful.  We followed fast rollings hills descending down towards Lake Ontario through beautiful forests. I’m sure we biked for around 20km without seeing a single vehicle and passing farms and forests punctuated by regal old estates and then unholy mansions and fake castles as seen below just short of Ajax.

When Concession Road 7 ended, we hopped over to Salem Road which took us all the way into Ajax.  Not much was open on a holiday Monday morning, so we landed at a McDonalds around 10:30 AM for coffee and light breakfast.

At this point, we are pretty much off the trail, so we took Kingston road west for a few kms until crossing the 401 at Whites Road to get down to the water.  The big lake and nuclear power in the distance.  We’ve arrived!

No, not really.  Still Pickering and Scarborough to pass through. The water front trail is awesome until the Scarborough bluffs and then you get kind of get kicked about in a rather unorganized way along poorly marked bike routes towards downtown Toronto.  Don’t get me wrong, some very nice neighbourhoods, but I felt lost and disoriented through most of this section and we were sent off trail several times having to double-back to pick things up again.  Eventually, the route dumped us onto Kingston Road, which took us onto the Danforth and into downtown Toronto.  Official arrival was around 1:00 PM and we were super happy to be off our bikes.

Rajapaksa says unlikely to lead next Sri Lanka government

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Former president Mahinda Rajapaksa said on Tuesday he was unlikely to lead Sri Lanka’s next government as initial results from the general election gave a slight edge to the coalition government.
However, with only one of 22 districts having declared, the shape of the next parliament remains unclear and Rajapaksa’s comments to Reuters stopped short of an outright concession.
“I will support good policies and oppose bad things,” the two-term president, who crushed a 26-year Tamil insurgency in 2009, said by telephone from his southern home of Hambantota.
The 69-year-old nationalist ruled out joining a unity government that President Maithripala Sirisena, the figurehead of a broad reform coalition that toppled him at a presidential vote in January, wants to form.
Sirisena succeeded Rajapaksa as leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party but has moved only belatedly to assert his control over the party and block his predecessor’s path back to power.
Sirisena backed the formation of a minority government led by the United National Party (UNP) after January’s election and called the early election in a bid to form a more broadly based administration joined by his own supporters in the SLFP.
Initial results indicated that the UNP was likely to make gains and emerge as the largest single party, but would need outside support to form a viable government to run the Indian Ocean island of 20 million people.
