Minecraft Shorn Snow Golem Cake

Yields one 8-inch square, one 6-inch square, & one 4-inch square cake

The things you’ll need

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • ½ cup cake flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 stick unsalted butter
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon rum extract
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 6 tablespoons cream
  • 6 tablespoons milk
  • White frosting
  • Black fondant
  • Pretzel rods
Equipment
  • Hand mixer with beater attachments
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Small mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Rubber spatula
  • 4, 6, & 8-inch square cake pans, lined with parchment
  • White frosting in decorating bag
  • Offset spatula
  • Small square cookie cutter
  • Small fondant roller
  • Large straws

Let’s get started!

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to combine flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together egg yolks, rum and vanilla extract, vegetable oil, cream and milk.
  4. Add butter and mix on a low speed until soft crummy texture forms and then scrape down sides.
  5. Add half the wet mixture, and mix for 1 ½ minutes, scrape the bottom and sides of bowl, then add the remaining wet mixture in two parts, scraping between each addition.
  6. Divide the cake batter into two 8-inch pans and one 6-inch pan.
  7. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes.
  8. Bake enough cakes so that you have six 8-inch, four 6-inch. Cut two of the 8-inch cakes into four pieces so that you have eight 4-inch cakes.

Time to decorate!

  1. Pipe a dollop of frosting onto a cake board and then place an 8-inch cake onto the board. Stack the 8-inch cakes on top of each other, spreading frosting in between each layer.
  2. Once all of the 8-inch cakes are stacked, use an offset spatula to lightly coat the top and sides with white frosting. Place the cakes in the fridge to chill.
  3. Once the cakes have chilled for about an hour, use an offset spatula to frost them with a thicker coat of white frosting.
  4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 with the 6-inch and 4-inch cakes.
  5. Cut 4 straws to the height of the 8-inch cake stack and then stick them in to reinforce the cake stack. Place the 6-inch cake stack on top of the 8-inch. Reinforce the 6-inch stack and then place the 4-inch stack on top.
  6. Use a square cookie cutter to make black fondant eyes, mouth, and buttons. Place the pieces in the appropriate areas on the cake.
  7. Stick pretzel rods into the sides of the middle tier of the cake as the snowman’s arms.

Inside the station, a honey-eyed waif with a shorn head and a long pale throat is clicking away at a pen and swinging his chair back and forth behind the receptionist desk. Derek plasters on his most charming grin and leans up against it, bracing a hand in front of the guy and sliding his sunglasses down to give him a once-over.

The guy blinks up at him and flushes. His mouth falls open a little and Derek clears his throat around the way he kind of wants to press his thumb to it.

“Hey,” Derek says, still grinning. “I’m here for my sister?”

Inktober Day 28 BONUS- I actually had two ideas for my Stranger Things Inktober, a regular version and Zootopia-styled mash-up. I inspired by a friend of mine who was doing Zootopia spins on famous characters for her Instagram page and I’m a fan of Zootopia ’s style, so I had the idea to put that spin on Stranger Things! I liked it so much I thought: I’ll do both!!!

Clockwise from the left: Dustin as a beaver, Lucas as a jaguar, Eleven as a shorn lamb, Mike as a deer, Will as a fox, and the Demigorgon as…well, itself. I tried to pick animals that would work for each character; hope I made good choices. Wonder if I should do the rest of the cast…..hmmm…?

I am lean against the loaded, heavy hour, hand of the urge and verging towards whole.

We will not speak again, moonfaced and kept. One day I wake from my slumber of the dying, rustling to my impending ruin, and ever more. A death an abandon, it is not in me to do it, but I must. It goes everywhere with me. Nothing more to want, no cumulus of unknowing, no tightening of the pulse - the eventual caesura stops short and takes me to the hoarding sweet of nothing.

What is left of the bog except a spirit shorn or badly marred – take the fury and put it to the loveless, bloodless go. Reddened, numinous in death. Numb, shouldering the luck among me and to the gaunt looking after.

There was a tall man with a fair and noble face, dark-haired and grey-eyed, proud and stern of glance. His garments were rich, and his cloak was lined with fur and he had a collar of silver in which a single white stone was set; his locks were shorn about his shoulders. On a baldric he wore a great horn tipped with silver that now was laid upon his knees. (insp.)

When they get back from the underworld, Killian asks Emma to cut his hair.

“I don’t know how to cut hair. This is going to be a disaster,” she says, handing the scissors back to him.

“Emma, please,” he responds, eyes wide (and almost… panicked? If she’s not mistaken?), and not taking them from her.

“Okay,” she nods, eyes shut. “Okay.”

So she gets him set up in a chair at the kitchen table, and drapes an old shirt over his shoulders because she knows how much it’ll bother him, little clippings of hair stuck in his clothes if she doesn’t.

And she begins to snip,

And snip,

And snip.

Until she thinks she’s got it mostly even. But it’s shorn too short in some places, and is still awkward and long in others. His bangs aren’t in his eyes anymore, but they’re cut at a swooping angle, with one long piece at the end. And she’s cut away too much on top.

“I warned you,” she says, grimacing, before he can look in the mirror. He looks, examines it from all angles. His face is unreadable. And then… he grins. It almost looks as if he’s about to laugh.

“It’s perfect, Swan.” He smiles even bigger, if it’s possible, lips stretched a mile wide. He kisses her, and she runs her fingers through the long bits at the back (at least she got that part right).

That night, he’s fast asleep. She wakes up from a nightmare and snuggles in close, but she just can’t drift off. So she stares. At the ceiling, at the moon outside the window, at his new haircut. And she just can’t help it; she needs to fix this. So she closes her eyes and pictures his hair cut trim, neat, the way he used to keep it. And poof, there it is, good as new. She stays awake for a while after that, but eventually fixes herself an “adult cocoa” and goes back to sleep.

The next morning, he rises with the sun as always and putters around the house until Emma wakes. At some point, he catches his reflection, hair trimmed almost professionally. His eyes narrow. He runs to a mirror and examines it. He’s almost… disappointed. Emma comes downstairs before he can switch his expression, and catches sight of his brows pulled together, lips angled downward.

“Everything alright?”

“You changed it while I was asleep, didn’t you?”

She looks at him funnily. “Well, yeah. It was a mess.”

“Aye, but it was a beautiful mess.” Her eyebrow raises, disbelieving. “It might not’ve been traditional, love, but you’re the one who did it. I truly did like the look of it.” She smiles a little. Hugs him for a moment, kisses his cheek.

“Do you want me to switch it back?” He nods eagerly, like a kid offered a free puppy. With a wave of her hand, his hair is once again choppy, bangs angled and clumpy, long in the back and too short on top, sideburns uneven. He waggles his eyebrows at her, then spins around to look in the mirror. He spends at least two whole minutes examining the look from every potential angle, making silly faces to amuse her but not saying a word.

“I love you,” he says eventually.

“I love you too.”

A/N: Okay I’m not sure what happened. I was just going to give a cute little two-sentence headcanon but it really sorta got away from me and now we have this.

The Empire Falls, The Empire Rises

In the Land of the Lawsuit
and the laughing mad
chiselled chinned proponents
of alternative hatreds
pose themselves
to be guardians
to the drowning
who flounder and are
sinking quick in a sea
of pious hypocrisy
as celebrity strokes the altar
of uncertain egos
calling out
“Prostrate yourself
you weak ugly creatures
empty your mind of thought
and fill it with desires
of being what you will never be”
Oh how we stumble!
Oh how our stunted dreams
drain themselves of a truth
traded for belonging!
Crippled and hobbled,
the wings shorn from our backs,
we stagger towards
the Castle of All Lies
where fear and the inferior
lays claim
to strength and the superior,
They are redacting our consent
with the sadistic bliss
of the schemer exceeding
by any and all measure
the foulest of plans
gone from impossible
to this.

Fiber Associations

I’ve been trying to draft a list of elemental fiber associations for fiber craft witches, and its difficult because it can be so arbitrary. For some, animal fibers may be a connection to spirit, while plant fibers may be connected to earth. Some people connect warmer fibers like wool to fire, while I’ve seen others associate cotton with fire because it grows in such sunny and hot conditions. Ultimately, what you believe is much more important than what some witch on the internet tells you. That said, here’s a set of ideas for you to dabble with:

Cotton

  • Fire: Cotton grows in incredibly hot and sunny conditions
  • Earth: As a plant fiber, it grows in the earth

Animal Fibers (Wool, Angora, Alpaca, Etc.)

  • Fire: These fibers are often the warmest. Indeed, most fiber growing animals must be shorn before summer because they could over heat in an unhealthy manner if they were forced to carry their coats
  • Air: Some lighter animal fibers, like angora, are whispy and light, like air
  • Earth: These animals are almost always herbivores, creatures of the earth
  • Spirit: You can, if you so chose, evoke the qualities of the animal, or just the fact that it comes from a living creature

Bamboo

  • Earth: As a plant fiber, it grows in the earth
  • Water: Bamboo can live in the water
  • Air: Bamboo can grow exceptionally tall
  • Fire: Bamboo is shockingly warm for a plant fiber, and may have some cleansing, antibacterial properties

Silk

  • Earth: As an insect fiber, silk carries the spirit of small creatures that live in trees and usually mimic leaves
  • Air: Silk is incredibly light; Additionally, most silk comes from the larvae of silk moths, which are flying creatures
  • Spirit: You can, if you so chose, evoke the qualities of the animal, or just the fact that it comes from a living creature
  • Fire: Most silk comes from insects that are killed using heat or fire before the silk fibers from their cocoons are harvested

Man Made Fibers (Rayon, Acrylic, Etc.)

  • Spirit: An excellent representation of the ingenuity of humanity, as they are made by us
  • Earth: Many acrylic fibers are made of recycled materials, and could be used to represent our concern for and connection to the earth

Of course, sometimes price and practicality win out and you use what you have. In that case, chose what you can get, what will work, and perhaps play with color and patterns. And remember: always consider fiber care!

it’s so funny to make how un self-aware ben is about his hair….he looks so charming and dashing with the curls over his forehead when they let him do what he wants he looks like a freshly shorn sheep with fifteen cowlicks
