‘Just once.’

‘Please?’ Allison begs. ‘Just let me cheat off you once.’

‘Allison,’ Lydia sighs. The disappointed and disapproving look she throws her girlfriend is almost enough to make Allison back down. Almost.

‘Let me sweeten the deal for you.’ Allison smirks. ‘If you let me cheat off you on the test, we can stop studying, and we can go make out until you have to go home.’

Lydia turns to face her. ‘Sweetie, you need to do well on this test, and you need to know this stuff, because it’s going to come up on future tests. I’m not going to let you cheat off me, not just because you won’t learn anything, but because you’ll be disappointed in yourself.’

Allison slumps in her chair. ‘It’s just really hard. I don’t get any of this crap.’ She gestures at the Economics text books on her desk. They’ve been at it all afternoon and evening, and she feels like her head is about to explode.

‘You’re doing better than you think,’ Lydia says, grabbing Allison’s hand and squeezing. ‘How about this: I’m going to quiz you. Ten questions. If you get eight of them right, we’ll call it a night, go make out, and continue tomorrow.’

‘I have to get eight of them right?’ Allison asks indignantly. There’s no way she can get that many right.

‘That’s the percentage you need to bring your grade up to passing.’

‘Fine.’ Allison chews on her lip for a second, grins and says, ‘What if I get that grade on the actual test?’

One corner of Lydia’s mouth ticks up and she raises an eyebrow. ‘You’ll just have to wait and see. But trust me, it’s worth all this.’

Still holding Lydia’s hand, Allison squares her shoulders and gets ready for Lydia’s impromptu quiz. She’s going to get that reward.

Derek: (nervous gay laughter)…uhh…neat!

Derek: *face planted on the floor*I can’t believe I said ‘neat’ ,Lydia . ‘Neat’ . Nobody says neat! Anymore it’s the 21st century!! It’s not neat to say neat! But I said it ANYWAY!

Lydia: *putting on eyeshadow* hey, don’t beat yourself up. Everyone gets nervous sometimes. Remember what happened when Allison confessed to me?

Derek: didn’t you like ,thank her?

Lydia:*puts her brush down* *laying down next to Derek , staring at the ceiling* I thanked her…

Nice naive athlete protagonist with less athletic precious sarcastic childhood best friend and fierce brunette new girl with popular red head friend that loves red lipstick.

“When I see this, I see Lydia looking at Malia, the new girl being shown the school, and remembering a certain other new girl on her first day. I see her remembering the first time she saw Allison in the corridor, the first time she talked to her, about a jacket of all things! How trivial that must seem now. How Lydia shallowly proclaimed Allison to be her ‘New Best Friend’, as though she had any idea what it meant to have a best friend. A real one. Someone that wasn’t just a best friend, but a sister. Someone who she went through fire with, someone who was her sister in arms. Someone who held her hand as she went to a loft to meet the man who attacked her before she knew any of this. The same man who had killed Allison’s aunt in front of her very eyes. Yet despite that, The Hunter and The Banshee stood together. That’s what a best friend does. That’s what one is. So no, I don’t see that smile as someone who is getting over the death of someone that was a part of her in ways no one else ever had been before or likely ever would be again. I see it as her picturing the nervous, happy, dimpled young girl who walked that same hall on her very first day.” SOURCE
