Nine times out of ten, I can’t sleep because I can’t stop thinking about something. But ten times out of those nine I can’t really figure out what it is I’m thinking about. My mind/heart/soul/whatever is clearly preoccupied… but I can’t tell why.
Now, instead of trying to force my focus to find resolution – which often manifests it’s frustration as tossing and turning and candy crush – I have a little trick to let my subconscious guide me to the source of my sleepless state. It’s a handy helper for the occasions in life where you are the only one awake.
(Though as a kid I would just watch TV because there really isn’t much on at 4AM and the public access channel is an excellent sedative.)
Anyway, here is how I figure out what is keeping me up:
- I go to google.
- I write “quotes about” …
- …and then let the sentence finish itself without me. The conscious me. (Think of it a bit like word association…except your kind of asking someone for advice.)
- Next, I read and copy whatever quotes speak to me. Though I won’t usually know why they do…
- Then I type the “quotes about” sentence again, but by this time have titrated my thought train a bit and am getting closer to the root.
- I repeat this process until I find that words I need. I know that I have found them because they don’t make me curious for more, but rather surround me with a sense of sleepy satisfaction which I can curl up and rest within.
Here’s an abbreviated version of tonight’s results as an example:

… “quotes about courage” …
A ship is safe in harbor, but that’s not what ships are for. ~ William G.T. Shedd
C'est tout! Try it out sometime. Hope it can be helpful!
Both done in Chicago, IL. On the left, done by Adam at Tatu Tattoo, and on the right done at Infamous Ink (not by Adam - artist unknown).
They’re separate but combined in a lot of ways, obviously. The full quote from the left one is “a ship in harbor is safe, but that’s not what ships are built for” and the one on the right (newer one) is from the song Ship to Wreck by Florence and the Machine. As soon as I heard the song, I knew the one of the left needed a companion.
Sail to the great unknown. Annoy sailors, spoil ducks with copious amounts of bread, try talking to dolphins by just nodding repeatedly, print your selfie unto your mast and then take a selfie in front of it, it doesn’t really matter as long as you explore to your hearts content :D
