To commemorate somehow being 75% of the way through the ‘10s, we at Billboard have decided to look back at the biggest happenings of the decade thusfar – the Earth-stopping releases, the major industry changes, the biggest live spectacles, and other moments where you could feel the pop landscape shifting underneath your feet.

November 15th, 2014: Taylor Swift’s 1989 sells 1.287 million in first week 

 The world’s biggest country superstar at the end of the ‘00s, Taylor Swift set her sights on a full pop crossover in the ‘10s, culminating in her biggest sales week to date – and the biggest of anyone in over a decade – in 2014, for her retrofitted pop blockbuster LP 1989. The set moved 1.287 million units in its first frame, part of a total top 40 takeover that also resulted in each of the set’s first three singles topping the Hot 100 and Taylor taking home album of the year – her second, a first for a female solo artist – at the 2016 Grammys. By then, Taylor could no longer be considered country’s biggest superstar, but she was almost certainly pop’s. – A.U. 

 June 21, 2015: Taylor Swift pens open letter to Apple 

 The pending launch of Apple Music June 30 was widely anticipated, and the company’s decision to offer free trials for its first three months of operation was seen as an easy way to test its functionality with users. But Apple’s decision to also not pay royalties during that period drew the ire of many – most publicly, Taylor Swift, who wrote a heartfelt open letter on behalf of her fellow musicians trashing that decision and announcing she would be withholding her 1989 album from the service. Apple’s response was, ahem, swift, and before the end of the day the company had reversed course, promising to pay royalties and forging a partnership with the superstar that resulted in a 1989 World Tour concert documentary and a string of humorous commercials for its streaming service. – D.R.

Trap Streets

On maps and atlases, a “trap street” is either a fake, misnamed, or misrepresented street — the passage may be curved and shown as straight or vice versa. The intention is to “trap” cartography copycats, enabling the original artist to pin them down with unanswerable questions about the duplicates origins in a court of law (or field of battle depending on the region and seriousness of the crime).

Like so many human endeavors, mortal truth unintentionally parallels the Netherworld.

From tiny villages to immense cities, communities of all sizes gain sentience over time. Their movements and actions are typically too slow or subtle for human perception, creating the illusion of a space to be controlled and changed. In reality, communities adjust their features and layouts over time, much in the same way you or I adjust a garment to fit better.

For witches and other magic users, the street changes can be a source of communication. 

Ghosts and non-corporeal undead will notice but rarely take into account the changes. The ability to pass through walls means having to pay little attention to shifting landscapes and architecture beyond a passing curiosity.

Monsters notice significantly more. With the innate ability to travel in plain sight without being perceived, they are masters of adaption. Most monsters are so in tune with their home that following, even aiding, the shifting of streets is as natural as breathing.

For witches and other magic users, the street changes can be a source of communication. After living with an area for a while, they can read and be warned of danger simply by wandering about and taking stock in movements of pathways and light sources.

Travelers and adventurers must beware, for while all of this may seem enjoyable and light hearted, it should be noted that some cities actively use trap streets to corner and destroy those that displease them. In these instances, they are quite literally trap streets.

Can you imagine what Arts were like in the Wizarding World, tho? I mean we have talking portraits but what about abstract paintings? Did wizards have impressionist movements as well? Surrealist? Do we get these sweeping landscapes constantly shifting, constantly changing to imitate a dream like state? Does it give of scents and endorphins to further the experience? Can you look into it and just suddenly… lose yourself in a dream?

And what about theatre? Do we have dancers that dance on literally water air and fire? Do they incorporate apparition and portkeys in their performances? Do they have performances that span across hundreds of kilometers with the performers constantly going back and forth between theatres?

And literature, god the literature. What is the wizard version of the fantasy genre? Is it tales about muggles who are able to build things, sweeping towers, miniature objects that can talk, without the use of their wand? And their poetry? It puts a whole new depth to it. Can you put spells on a page to give off a certain mood, a certain sound. Do they have poems where the typography is always different whenever you look at it, or do they have forms that incorporate veela magic? 

I just… I have a lot of thoughts in the Arts of the Wizarding world, oaky?

Hello,I saw some videos about Evgenia compares with Yuna Lutz(a little 'hater' videos), personaly,I think Medv. deserve her scores, and her Lutz is improve,but what do you think?This comparision is correct? Why the people compare Evgenia with Yuna (only for the World Record? ) I saw Full competitions (2007-2010) and Mao and Yuna , they always fell, and became good after the years, why do people maximize Yuna, if she was many times behind Mao? Is Yuna as magnificent and perfect as her fans says?

Whoa, there are a lot of things going on here, so let me try to break it down in order.

Now, the Lutz comparison. It depends, was that video made to show that Janny’s Lutz technique needs improvement, by using Yuna’s as a benchmark? If it was then that’s a valid point, Janny does have edge issue with her Lutz and Yuna’s Lutz is textbook perfect. I do this kind of comparison all the time too in my tech posts, simply because it’s the easiest way to shed light on a technical discussion. That said, if the point of the video is to claim that, because of that one weakness with the Lutz, Janny doesn’t deserve to be where she is today, then that’s an argument as weak as this horrible thrice watered-down tragically sad vaguely brownish liquid the Americans see fit to call coffee, which I’m having to put up with at my workplace. 

Does Janny deserve her scores? I do think she’s a bit over-scored in PCS and jump GOEs, but not to the point that it’s completely outrageous. There has never been a competition she won in which the final standing could be questioned. As you said, she’s working hard to improve her Lutz too. It probably won’t ever be as good as Yuna’s, but she’s making steady progress. Every skater has their strength and weakness and to evaluate them you have to take both into account. 

Why do people like to compare Janny against Yuna? Obviously, one reason is that they have too much free time on their hands. I, personally, vehemently dislike this sort of comparison. They are skaters who belong to two different generations. There was a time gap of 6 years between Yuna’s free skate world record and Janny’s (Vancouver 2010 to Boston 2016). During that period, figure skating has moved forward, technical content has changed, judges’ PCS and GOE expectation has shifted, the landscape of the sport has been rearranged. That is before we mention the fact that Janny is still in a relatively early stage of her career and more development is only to be expected. Comparing Janny against Yuna is about as constructive as, for example, asking if Guillermo Vilas at his best could have won a clay court match against Rafael Nadal: it’s purely speculative since there’s no way to objectively verify it, and it offers little to no insight on the competitive result of either athlete. One other reason is, probably, because the technical advancement in the ladies’ event has not been as drastic as in the men’s, so to a casual observer, the progression from one world record to another is not as clear-cut as, say, when Yuzuru broke Patrick’s erstwhile FS WR back in 2015. Another reason is, well, Yuna has a legion of die-hard fans who are understandably irritated when they perceive that someone is threatening to eclipse their favorite’s achievement (tell you what, I’d probably be annoyed too if 6 years from now a snot-nosed up-and-comer breaks Yuzu’s WR, especially if he does so without jumping a trazillion quads and raising BV to stratospheric level). On the other hand, for some inane reason which I’ve never cared to dig into because I value my sanity, Janny has always been the target of an inordinate amount of criticism and in some cases outright hatred. As such, comparing Janny against Yuna in order to bring Janny down and raise Yuna up is simply a convenient device for Yuna’s fans to let off some steam without fear of offending the rest of the skating community.

To follow up on that point, I never really was that fond of the incessant Yuna v Mao talk back in the day either. I am a Mao fan first and foremost, but I like Yuna well enough too, and I’ve always found it distasteful how the media (Japanese and Korean, mostly) blew their so-called rivalry out of proportion (the same way I’m cringing now every time I see a Shoma interview in which Yuzuru’s name would inevitably be invoked as a magical spell to backlight it with drama). Yuna and Mao’s skating are so different that any generic comparison between them is worse than apples to oranges, it’s more like banana to… concrete, or whatever. Both of them are amazing though, and by framing your view of them through the lens of a rivalry, the underlying implication is that you have to choose one over the other, which means you’re limiting yourself to being able to fully appreciate only one of them. Why on earth, as a skating fan, would you do that to yourself, when both of them are so enjoyable to watch? 

Why is Yuna so popular and so well-loved and regarded by so many as a queen among figure skaters? Because she’s awesome, when she’s at her best her skating is, yes, magnificent. She is an incredibly charismatic, charming, and mature performer, plus, quite importantly, she was highly consistent. Throughout her entire competitive career she never finished off a podium, ever. Is she perfect in every single aspect? No, she isn’t. Her jump technique is great overall, but her repertoire did have a glaring triple-loop-shaped hole in it (by the way, if you ever get stuck in a reductive discussion with a Yuna uber, a pretty effective way to make them change tack posthaste is casually bringing up Janny’s triple loop). Her spirals left much to be desired, and I’m not the biggest fan of her spins. For a skater who’s got 11 world records on her resume, the development of her technical content over time was not exactly revolutionary. Yuna’s approach to competition had never been to up the ante on difficulty, but to keep perfecting the same elements she is comfortable with (which, incidentally, describes Janny’s strategy pretty well too). Then again, as said, while evaluating a skater you have to balance weakness against strength, and when you consider her as a complete package, there is no denying that Yuna Kim is one of the best female athletes the world has ever seen (yes, I’m saying athletes in general, not just figure skaters).  

I guess what I’m trying to say with this very long rant is, if there is one thing I could change about the skating fandom, it’d be to get rid of pointless comparison and contrived narrative. You are, of course, free to dislike a skater for whatever reason. If you have some sound, objective, technical-based grounds why you don’t like them, sure, go ahead and tell people about if if you want, preferably with graphic evidence to back you up. If the only reason why you don’t like a skater is I don’t get their skating or I find them annoying or their personality sucks or they are way overrated then do please keep it to yourself and please please don’t use such personal feelings to fuel your drive to go on a crusade against them. If you manage to keep your subjective negativity contained and feel that you deserve a personal thank you note for that stupendous achievement, let me know, I will very gladly send you a postcard.

Say Joanna lives and Tywin dies instead, how does that change things? Would Joanna as regent for the twins go with the double betrothal? Would the twins grow up healthy and happy? Tyrion? Elia?

Note that all of our knowledge about the double betrothal comes from Oberyn who certainly was not privy to whatever correspondence actually happened between Joanna and the Princess of Dorne. The Princess told Oberyn some parts and he filled in the blanks of the story with his observations and deductions, making him not the most accurate source of info. Here’s what Oberyn said about the double betrothal:

“Such a clever dwarf. Elia and I were older, to be sure. Your brother and sister could not have been more than eight or nine. Still, a difference of five or six years is little enough. And there was an empty cabin on our ship, a very nice cabin, such as might be kept for a person of high birth. As if it were intended that we take someone back to Sunspear. A young page, perhaps. Or a companion for Elia. Your lady mother meant to betroth Jaime to my sister, or Cersei to me. Perhaps both.”

Perhaps both. The wording makes it clear that this part is Oberyn’s conclusion and not something his mother explicitly told him. The fact that he was speaking of Joanna’s intentions is an enough tell of how accurate this information is, because Oberyn is not an authority on Joanna Lannister, neither was he privy to what she might or might not wanted.

Personally, I think Oberyn is wrong and that a double betrothal was never in the works. The idea of a double betrothal makes absolutely no sense from a dynastic standpoint, and I refuse to believe that the Joanna simply did not care about dynastic advantages. The political atmosphere of Westeros had been turbulent for years at the time and we’ve seen how the reign of Aegon V and the War of the Ninepenny Kings heavily influenced the political landscape and bred awareness of the power the lords of the realm have and how it could be consolidated into a power bloc against the crown. Joanna was not a political novice; she spent some years at court as lady-in-waiting to then-Princess, later Queen Rhaella and was the trusted confidante of the Hand of the King. She was well aware of the shifting landscape and conscious of the need for alliances, especially as Tywin’s relationship with Aerys was becoming increasingly frazzled. Joanna also lived through the misrule of Lord Tytos and knew how attentive Tywin was to asserting and consolidating the power of House Lannister. In that context, it’s hard to see Joanna planning for a double betrothal to the Martell siblings considering it unnecessarily wastes the potential of a marriage alliance with another powerful family. Besides, Joanna knew Tywin and so she certainly knew how difficult it would be to convince him of one betrothal to the Martells considering Dorne’s significant economic and military disadvantage compared to other more politically powerful families. To think she thought that she could convince him of two does not ring true to me at all. No, I sincerely doubt that a double betrothal was ever in the works, regardless of what Oberyn might think.

But that raises the question of which betrothal Joanna had in mind, which is relevant to the answer of your question. While the order in which Oberyn told Tyrion the betrothals were proposed in OTL (Cersei\Oberyn then Elia\Jaime) could indicate her preference, we simply have no way of knowing if this was the actual order the Princess proposed them in. Indeed Oberyns flipped the order around over the course of the conversation with Tyrion as seen in the above quote. It could be argued that that was the correct order of the suggested betrothals because the rejection of Elia as a bride for Jaime came with the “insult” of offering Tyrion instead, which certainly would make the Princess of Dorne far less prone to suggest another match to the man who just insulted her, whereas the refusal of Oberyn as a husband to Cersei did not come with an insult, despite how brusque Tywin was. But even if that was the correct order, was that the Princess’ own initiative? Or did she and Joanna previously agree on Cersei\Oberyn as the preferable or the more-likely-for-Joanna-to-convince-Tywin-of option? We just don’t know. We have no idea what the extent of Joanna’s involvement in how things played out was or even if she and the Princess agreed on a match rather it being a general idea of betrothing a Lannister to a Martell. Whatever theory anyone has is only conjecture based on minimal information but I fell down the rabbit hole thinking about this so why not make you suffer through it? Under a cut because no one has ever accused me of being brief.

She was average enough, almost plain looking. But after a while, after you got to know her, that didn’t matter. And it wasn’t that she magically became beautiful, or that you just learned to ignore her appearance. It was that eventually, her face just became her. I could see her personality shining through her crooked smile and weak jawline and her acne was just an ever shifting feature on the landscape of her skin.  Her personality lit up her face, and it was beautiful.
—  You don’t have to be classically beautiful to be the most beautiful person someone has ever met.

another thing i am intrigued by in black sails is the shifting landscape of protagonist and antagonist. 

Like, in seasons one and two, I’d stake out firmly the stance that Flint and Eleanor are dual protagonists and Vane is the primary antagonist. The plot is chained to Flint and Eleanor–it changes and swirls around them as they walk through the world. Vane doesn’t move the world in the same way, but he catches the other end of the plot and yanks it back in the other direction, so Eleanor and Flint both stumble a little before coming at him. 

And then in season three, the dynamic shifts, because Vane and Flint are now allies. The plot still follows Flint as a protagonist, but Eleanor is the person with her hands on the other side of the plot cloth–the tension between the two of them and their two storylines is where the drama comes from, and everyone else lives in the middle, balanced precariously between Eleanor’s story and Flint’s story (most notably, Max and Jack and Anne.) 

And then season four comes, and it shifts again. Flint is still the protagonist, but Eleanor isn’t the antagonist anymore–and neither is Woodes Rogers, really. He’s an extension of the plotline/position that Eleanor used to hold, but he doesn’t move the plot in his own right–he’s just Eleanor’s echo. Silver is the primary antagonist of season four, the person actively trying to wrench the narrative into a different direction. 

And obviously Silver wins, and Flint is deposed as a plot-operator, but by doing so cements Silver his role as villain/antagonist, and ruins his relationships with Flint (hero/protagonist) and Madi (hero/part of the protagonist-centered narrative)–and since his entire antagonist role was based around preserving his emotional relationships, he’s left with literally nothing. 

And so Silver’s dual victories/losses allows Max and Anne and Jack fucking Rackham to steal the plot, and sail off into the literal sunset with the narrative wrapped around their shoulders, triumphant new protagonists carrying the story forward.

Signs of the Times - Part 7

This is it, folks. The last Signs of the Times. This miniseries has been a look at all the time travely things going on in the Tarkir block. I started with a look at how the plane’s landscape shifted over time. Then the changes to the main characters was examined. Next I explored the hints hidden in Fate Reforged, the fulcrum of the block. I featured the mechanical parallels between Khans of Tarkir and Dragons of Tarkir before cataloging the visual and flavorful parallels too.

It would seem like nothing is left, but there’s still one subset of cards that I haven’t looked at yet: promos. Most of these cards display a Dragon-less Tarkir and a Dragon-full Tarkir, but there’s also a group of Ugin’s Fate cards from Fate Reforged that showcase past Tarkir with and without Ugin. We’ll start with this second group.

All the manifest cards from the Ugin’s Fate boosters show an even older version of those cards where Ugin was still alive. Many depict Ugin himself, such as Soul Summons:

Mastery of the Unseen shows Ugin teaching a Jeskai monk about manifesting magic:

Reality Shift depicts Ugin casting the concealment spell on a human:

Ugin helps out a human on Fierce Invocation:

Some major manifestation happens on Wildcall:

Ugin is also (partially) depicted on Ugin’s Construct, having freshly assembled the rock thing:

Finally, Ugin himself received an alternate art promo:

The rest of the manifest cards were shown to be more manifesty in their magic. The improved visuals made manifesting seem more exciting, such as on Sultai Emissary:

Write into Being features more energy and a new Ugin-themed banner:

And Formless Nurturing is now set above Ugin’s canyon:

The only Fate Reforged card I couldn’t figure out was Hewn Stone Retainers. Is it a hint to Dragons of Tarkir and Narset discovering the secrets of the khanfall? Quite possible so:

The rest of the Ugin’s Fate promos show the different timelines in action. I’d say Smite the Monstrous shows what the biggest change is:

Altar of the Brood showcases the change from a Naga-run clan to a Dragon-run clan:

Jeering Instigator goes from stealing Sidisi’s crown to Silumgar’s bracelet:

Briber’s Purse now fetches the loyalty of a much larger target:

Ghostfire Blade features some background Dragon:

Arc Lightning shows a vicious Kolaghan Dragon:

A gruesome scene is watched by a new Silumgar Dragon:

Watcher of the Roost now flies with Dragons:

The rest of the Ugin’s Fate cards have their own little quirks about them. Mystic of the Hidden way goes from sneaking through a stone wall to sneaking through an Ojutai brood ice wall:

Some of you may not have noticed that Ogres look different in both timelines. They’re hairy in the Khans version, but they end up with these scaly horns in the reforged timeline:

Ainok Tracker’s flavor text was the first hint at Surrak being the Hunt Caller for the Atarka clan:

Ruthless Ripper changes her attire…and watermark:

Finally, Dragonscale Boon as much fancier now that the scales given are from living Dragons:

A few Friday Night Magic promos also showcased the new Dragon overlords. Suspension Field shows a Dragon casting the removal spell:

And just as suddenly as it began, it’s over. A wibbly-wobbly journey through Tarkir’s past, present, and future showcased one of the most ambitious world building projects ever attempted by Creative.
