When Viktor had asked Hermione out to the Yule Ball, she had agreed straight away, partially because she believed no one else would ask her. However, as the day drew nearer, Hermione felt less and less settled with her decision, bordering on regret.

“What are you thinking about, Hermione?” you asked her, sitting next to her on the Quidditch Stadiums where the two of you were watching Harry and Ron practice.

Unable to contain herself, she blurted, “I don’t want to go to the Yule Ball with Viktor.”

You blinked at her, surprised at her confession. “Why not?”

Hermione gulped, not prepared to tell you the real answer. Instead, she lied, “I… I don’t know. Perhaps I don’t like him as much as I did before.”

“Well, what are you going to tell him?” you asked, and Hermione bit her lip as she closed her book, pondering. “You could say… you got hit in the face with a quaffle.”

Hermione’s eyebrows furrowed as you gestured to the pitch, where Ron had narrowly missed defending a quaffle from one of the hoops. Rolling her eyes, she said, “I’ve literally never heard anything as stupid as what you just said. That’s a terrible excuse!”

“Did you have something better?” you taunted, and Hermione pressed her lips together.

“I could… I could just say I’m not feeling well.” Hermione finally said, and you rolled your eyes.

“That’s the oldest excuse in the book!” you exclaimed, and Hermione sighed. “Why don’t you just tell him the truth?”

Hermione let out a groan, resting her chin in her hands as she stared off into the distance. Trying to appear nonchalant, she asked, “Has someone asked you out to the ball, y/n?”

“Yeah, but I turned them down. They weren’t the person I wanted to go with. ” you said casually, running a hand through your short hair as Hermione looked at you in surprise. Pausing, you looked at her before you asked, “Wait, if you don’t go with Viktor, who would you want to go with instead?”

Hermione gulped, quickly avoiding eye contact. “I don’t… I don’t know.”

“Hermione Granger, you are incredibly bright, but wow, you are a terrible liar.” you laughed, and Hermione blushed as you nudged her. “Come on, you can tell me. Maybe they don’t have a date yet and you can still ask them!”

“Alright, then.” Hermione straightened, taking a deep breath before looking at you. “y/n, will you go to the Yule Ball with me?”

It took a split second for you to comprehend what was happening, but once you realised, a smile lit up your face. “I’d love to.”
