The Inner Dimensions of Fasting

By Imam Ghazzali (qs)

Three Grades

It should be known that there are three grades of fasting: ordinary, special and extra-special. Ordinary Fasting means abstaining from food, drink and sexual satisfaction.

Special Fasting means keeping one’s ears, eyes, tongue, hands and feet — and all other organs — free from sin.

Extra-special Fasting means fasting of the heart from unworthy concerns and worldly thoughts, in total disregard of everything but God, Great and Glorious is He. This kind of Fast is broken by thinking of worldly matters, except for those conducive to religious ends, since these constitute provision for the Hereafter and are not of this lower world.

Those versed in the spiritual life of the heart have even said that a sin is recorded against one who concerns himself all day with arrangements for breaking his Fast. Such anxiety stems from lack of trust in the bounty of God, Great and Glorious is He, and from lack of certain faith in His promised sustenance.
To this third degree belong the Prophets, the true awliya and the intimates of God. It does not lend itself to detailed examination in words, as its true nature is better revealed in action. It consists in utmost dedication to God, Great and Glorious is He, to the neglect of everything other than God, Exalted is He. It is bound up with the significance of His words: ‘Say: “Allah (sent it down)”: then leave them to play in their vain discussions.’ [al-An'am, 6:91]

Sheykh Abdul Kerim's Duty From Sheykh Mawlana

When Sheykh Maulana sent me here to America and I first came to this country, I was 19 years of age. He made dua for me and said, “Go now. There is one thing you have to do there. Make those people like you. However you choose to make them like you. That is your duty.”

At first I didn’t understand. I was very young, 19 years of age. But I said, “That’s what Sheykh Mevlana said and that’s what I have to do.” So I left my country and came over here. I watched. I noticed people are in depression. There are none that are smiling in the country. I was smiling and greeting everybody but people were turning and cursing at me. I thought to myself, “How can I introduce Sheykh Maulana?”

At the time, Sheykh Maulana had casette tapes in English. I was making little money. I would sit and copy the tapes. They were very expensive at the time. I would buy, fill, and give them as a gift to people. I would print Sheykh Maulana Hazretleri’s nice pictures on small size kodak. When I met a person with radiance I would ask, “Would you like to see the most beautiful person in the world?”

He would say, “I would.”

‘Here, look.’ I would say to that person.

‘Oh, how beautiful.’

I said, ‘Take it. It’s yours.’

Very strange incidents happened to them afterwards of course. Alhamdulillah, and then so many years later I understood why Sheykh Maulana had said that to me earlier, and what was really happening.

Sheikh Maulana Nazim al Haqqani is interpreting a dream and stating that Sheikh Abdul Kerim has a huge role to play during the time of Mahdi a.s. Sheikh Maulana says that he is “Sahib-ul Saif”, Owner of the Sword.

This is also a title that was given to Ali r.a & Halid bin Walid r.a. by the Holy Prophet s.a.s.
