#ThingsIGiveAShitAbout:

It’s a #Girl explores the growing epidemic of female infanticide, focusing primarily on #India & #China where more unwanted baby girls are killed each year than are born annually in the U.S. The result is a glaring imbalance in the number of males to females in the population, a disparity that leads to higher rates of sex trafficking, prostitution, & kidnapping of young girls for marriages.

“A man goes out in the beach and sees that it is covered with starfish that have washed up in the tide. A little boy is walking along, picking them up and throwing them back into the water. ‘What are you doing, son?’ the man asks. 'You see how many starfish there are? You’ll never make a difference.’ The boy paused thoughtfully, and picked up another starfish and threw it into the ocean. 'It sure made a difference to that one,’ he said.

This book is BEYOND inspiring, it’s very interesting and it leaves you wanting to do more and giving back to others. It’s heartbreaking to read about what women endure in other parts of the world just for simply being a "female”. I cried while reading their stories and made me even more appreciative of my life. My favorite chapter is “Is Islam Misogynistic?”, because the authors were able to show that Islam never oppressed women. Everybody should read it and be inspired by it!! If you don’t like reading then watch the documentary film that was based on this book! I salute to every individual who is making a good change in other person’s life 👏👏👏👏 #HalfTheSky #NicholasKristof #SherylWudunn

“When you address these issues, they seem really daunting. But there’s always something you can do about it, even if it’s really small. You can always help, even if it’s just a few people, and then they can help other people, and that’s kind of how it expands.”

-Kaley Belval, Half the Sky Movement campus ambassador for Ithaca College, on tackling issues such as gender-based violence
