shelter pets

Ever since the day Steve Greig went to a shelter and brought home the dog with the least chance of being adopted, he continues to take in elderly animals that would have been euthanized. So far he’s collected 10 dogs, several cats, 2 ducks, some pigeons and chickens, and an old pig named Bikini. Source

HAPPY PET DAY, TUMBLR!

Please join the Department of Impossible Cuteness in welcoming their newest mascot, Huff the Hedgehog, aka Sir Hodge Huffington the Cricket Slayer, aka secret best friend of Bunnicula. This 3-year-old rescue African Pygmy Hedgehog lives in Utah, where he was adopted by student Carolyn Parker after his previous human mistreated him. How anyone could mistreat a hedgehog, let along a hedgehog with teeny pronounced fangs is beyond us.

Follow Hodge Huffington on Instagram, for regular doses of befanged hedgehog cuteness.

This is Findlay, an outgoing, playful, and loving Bombay mix.  He has been at a shelter in Cincinnati, Ohio known as Save the Animals Foundation for a couple years.

He was the victim of senseless cruelty when he was younger.  He was put inside a bag and beaten with a baseball bat with no way to escape.  Despite his rough beginning, he LOVES people and adores any attention and love showered upon him.  He will follow you around the room and try to ‘help’ you with whatever you are doing.  It’s hard to resist this charming guy.  He also loves toys and is very athletic.  Sometimes he even makes full twisting jumps into the air to try to catch a toy.

At the shelter, he is confined to a cage since he doesn’t like being around other animals, meaning he can’t live in any of the cat large cat rooms.

Findlay is around 3 years old and healthy.  His ideal forever home would be one without other pets or children.  He is a very special boy whom the volunteers at STAF love very much.  We’re hoping he finds his forever home soon.

Lucia is a super sweet gal that has been having trouble finding a forever home. She’s diabetic, and a lot of potential adopters are scared off by chronic health conditions. However, Lucia can easily live a long and happy life as long as her diabetes is properly treated! She is currently on a low-calorie diet and she receives insulin shots. She’s an easy patient that is totally used to her shots and won’t struggle when it’s time for them!

Lucia is a bit stressed out at the shelter because she prefers peace and quiet. When she’s relaxed she’ll cuddle up on your lap and snuggle with you for hours! She also has a playful side and loves chasing jingly balls around the shelter. Her favorite thing to do when she doesn’t want to cuddle is to find boxes to sit in. If you give Lucia a chance you’ll be rewarded with lots of fun years with this tiny girl who has a big personality!

If you are interested in meeting Lucia or any of the cats at The Ellen M. Gifford Cat Shelter, visit our website (www.giffordcatshelter.org). While you’re there, you can fill out an online adoption application and learn more about our shelter.

Today the Department of Awesomely Good Deeds salutes members of the 501st Legion: Capital City Garrison, a Canadian costuming organization that spends their time making fantastic Star Wars-related costumes and wearing them to brighten the lives of the less-fortunate when and wherever they can. For this year’s Star Wars Day Cecil the Tusken Raider, Garindan (aka Mark), and Melissa the Stormtrooper traveled to the Ottawa Humane Society animal shelter and posed for portraits with a variety of pets in need of adoption.

Until now we had no idea how much we’ve always wanted to see Star Wars characters cuddling with guinea pigs, cats, dogs, and rabbits. We hope these wonderful photos, taken by Rohit Saxena, help these animals find forever homes. Click here for additional images.

Visit the Ottawa Humane Society website for more information about these critters.

Cat has waited 400 days for her furever home

Meet Finley! This cute girl has been residing at the Great Plains SPCA in Independence, Missouri for over 400 days! She was a found stray and went into foster care for socialization and now sits in a colony in the shelter just waiting and watching her friends get adopted

Volunteers at the shelter say she’s shy, likes petting, LOVES the cat dancer toy and tolerates other animals in her space. She would do best in a calm home where she has time to open up and learn to trust…

Finley is 4 years old, spayed and house trained, she’s been at the shelter longer than any other cat and gets overlooked day in, day out, which is heartbreaking for the staff and volunteers who just want to see her find a loving home.

No animal should wait for a home for 400 days! Finley is healthy and sweet, just a little scared, if there’s anyone out there who’d like to adopt this gorgeous feline and provide her with a new home, follow the links below, THANK YOU!

Two dogs escaped being euthanized after a photo of the pair hugging went viral on Facebook. Along with the image, the caption included a message that could bring any animal lover to tears.

I’m Kala. This is Keira. We’re so scared in here. The people working in the shelters see how scared we are but just told each other that today is our deadline. We have to have someone rescue us or we’ll be “next.” Keira is black and not a “real boxer,” just a mix. She’s so brave and tells me it will be okay no matter what happens. She tells me to be brave too but I don’t know if I can be. Can you see our faces. Keira knows what will happen. You can see it in her eyes. She’s putting on a brave face for sure but I can feel her heart beating fast while I’m clinging to her. If no one saves us, someone will take her away from me. I’ll see her as she goes down the hallway. She won’t come back and I’ll cry. They’ll come for me next and I won’t be as brave. We’ve comforted each other while we were here. She gave me hope when I had none. Now it’s over.

The photo quickly went viral and in just two hours, the pups went:

Gotta love a happy ending, a second chance at life and soaked facial tissues!
