After four amazing years, yesterday marked my last day animating on Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and my last day at my studio, which I’ve been at a total of five years. I drew these up as cards for my director (whom I’ve known since I first started on Planet Sheen and Fanboy and Chum Chum) and production manager.
I’ve learned so much from working on this show and it’s been amazing to be a part of something cool enough to have gifs being made of your animations haha. :D I’ve gotten a lot of sweet messages over the years from those of you who watch the show and I wanna thank all of you so much for that. It means so much to know all our hard work is appreciated! I’ll never forget my favourite turtle teens as I move on to different things.
Nick TMNT's Michelangelo: Constantly Underestimated and Unappreciated
I absolutely adore this version of Michelangelo.
Sure, I’ve always been a Mikey fangirl (yes, even the 4Kids version-before S4 anyway). But this particular take on the character is very near and dear to my heart. (Be Warned: Large Post Under The Cut!)
(Sort of an episode tag to “Mikey Gets Shellacne.”
Also very loosely based off a scene in IDW #35, when Slash injected himself with some questionable stuff in a questionable syringe and went from childlike and prone to violent outbursts, to the intelligent and self-controlled character he is now. This 2k12 drabble has nothing to do with IDW #35, except that it involves Slash and a questionable syringe.)
“No, thank you,” Leo said for the four of them, folding his arms over his plastron. Raph stood casually at Leo’s shoulder, creating a united front, and Donnie’s gaze drifted from them over to Mikey, quick and cursory, before darting back to the Mutanimal.
Only then he did a double-take, because Mikey was looking at the vial with something more than simple curiosity. His head was tilted to one side, round almond eyes unblinking, and even as Leo turned to lead the way home, Mikey piped up with, “Wait a sec—what will it do again?”
Every head swiveled in his direction. Even Slash, holding the vial, looked a little wrong-footed.
“Doesn’t matter, Mikey,” Raph said, brow wrinkling under his red mask. “We don’t need that crap.”
“Yeah, but, he said it’d make us better,” Mikey insisted. “Right, Spike?”
Slash, for his part, looked very much like he was regretting bringing the serum up at all. Leo’s blue eyes cut across the room like a sword, narrowed and fierce and more than a little ticked off. The much larger mutant waffled visibly. Donnie wondered if Leatherhead knew what Slash had come to offer them, and how the alligator might have reacted if he’d seen Mikey’s interest.
“You said it would enhance us, right? Make us faster and stronger?” Donnie really didn’t like the excited light in his baby brother’s eyes, or the eager lilt to his voice, the way he was peering around Raph and edging forward by inches.
His baby brother, who once rubbed retromutagen into his skin, with some backwards hope that it would make him into something more than he already was. “To become better!” he’d said then, clutching that dangerous, glowing jar of could-kill-him in both hands and effectively shaving whole years off Don’s life in a stunning moment of sheer terror.
And now Don watched Mikey’s arm come up in an innocent reach out to take what their allies were offering, and felt that same fear again, behind the armor of his plastron, like it had never truly left.
“I don’t care what you think,” Don snapped, way too sharply. Mikey jerked his hand back like he’d been burned, and Donnie took a quick step towards him, apologetic. “No, it’s just—Mikey, we don’t know anything about that compound. It could react badly to our mutated DNA, it could have any number of adverse effects we’re not prepared to counter. I would have to study it for a long time before I let one of you use it, and even then…. It’s too big of a risk, one that we don’t even need to consider taking. Do you understand?”
Mikey’s shoulders drooped just a little, eyes trailing slowly back to the serum in Slash’s hand. “Okay. Yeah.”
And Donnie knew that look. He knew Mikey better than he knew anything else, had an understanding of his little brother that was more biological than it was learned, gleaned from a whole life of shared secrets and late night talks and inside jokes– and he knew this conversation wasn’t over. With Mikey, he could just tell.
So he reached for him, bumping him playfully, and said, “Besides, who needs it, anyway? You and me are the B Team, tried and true. It doesn’t get any better than us, right?”
And it was like a charm, how quickly Mikey beamed at him, the serum suddenly the last thing on his mind. And he leaned into the one-armed hug Don wrapped around his shoulder, and chattered enthusiastically the whole way back to the Shellraiser, but Donnie couldn’t quite misplace the new, uneasy thought that would probably live in the back of his mind for the rest of forever.
Mikey thought he needed fixing. Of all of them– of all his troubled, angry brothers– Mikey thought he was the one who needed to change.
This is the final installment in my why-each-of-the-2012-turtles-is-my-favorite-version-of-each-turtle-so-far series.
Last but not least, here’s wee Mikey. :3
Oh my. He’s cute. Super cute. I was not prepared for how adorable he’d be in this series. My favorite Mikey used to be 2007, because I thought he was cute, but… I mean look at this face!
One of my favorite things about 2012 Mikey is how innocent and pure he is. This sets him apart from other Mikeys… particularly 2014 (I still can’t believe they made Mikey so lewd in that one).
Seriously though, who wasn’t completely tickled pink by the scene in “Within the Woods,” in which Donnie’s talk went over his head?
I can’t wait to see how he handles a crush on Renet… I bet he’ll be so cute about the whole thing. Be pessimistic all ya want, but this is 2012 Mikey we’re talking about. He probably won’t even realize what’s going on with his feelings or what the butterflies in his stomach are about. This will be ADORBS.
In the meantime, he still has Icecream Kitty.
Gotta love a boy who loves cats.
Plus, he’s just about the sweetest thing ever. He always looks for the best in people.
He wants to make friends with anyone and everyone… Bradford (before he knew he was evil), Leatherhead, Napoleon… he sees every new person as a chance to make a new friend.
He also accepts people like family.
When he heard about Karai being Miwa, the first thing he said was:
He accepted her, just like that. Sure he was weirded out, but that didn’t stop him from loving her the way any little brother would love his big sister.
The emotion he displayed when she said goodbye to them all proved just how much he wanted his big sister to stay.
He’s a very multi-faceted character. Not only does he get us to well up sometimes, but he also makes us laugh, which is very much needed in this series.
(I totally messed up the spelling of sundae in that gif, but it is what it is.)
Aside from being funny, he’s an extremely talented ninja. He has a lot of natural skill that sets him apart from his brothers.
He also has those “ninja vibes, yo!” He’s able to sense when something isn’t right. This isn’t a skill he had at the beginning of the series, but by “Buried Secrets,” he could tell when someone wasn’t who they said they were.
He’s right about a lot of stuff. He was right about the Kraang and how they were alien robots with brain things in their chests, he was right about Donnie needing to cut the green wire to defuse the mutagen bomb (”The Gauntlet”), he was right about Bradford taking Stockman to his old lab (”Mikey gets Shellacne”), and he was right about… just about everything when they went to Dimension X… both times.
He’s creative, too! He’s great at naming things and people. Inventions, enemies, friends, you name it. He names it. (See what I did there?)
AND he’s a great diplomat!
……Ok well maybe that one’s still a work in progress. But he has potential! He has the heart of a peace-keeper. He just wants everyone to get along.
He loves his family so much, and he’s not afraid to show it.
Whether he’s expressing gratitude…
or just glad to see them…
…he loves to show that he values his family above anything else. Even pizza.
2012 Mikey is one awesome, cute, creative, funny, cute, loving, talented, loyal, cute strong cute dude.
55 - When Mikey had Shellacne he was never going to die; Donnie had just exaggerated the symptoms in hopes it would veer Mikey away from touching anymore of his experiments. When it was all said and done, Donnie felt a little bad about lying to his brother, but he didn’t have the strength to deal with another Mutagen Man situation, especially with someone he cares as much about as he does for Michelangelo.
