Shehu is a boutique design and development firm located right here in Philadelphia. It helps design companies with branding, pattern drafting, line sheets, and so much more and even has an in house brand NINO full of unique pieces such as capes and cut out dresses. I recently interviewed Bela, the creative director of Shehu about this fabulous local company, here’s what was said:
FashionPennPal: Can you tell me a little about what you do exactly?
Bela: I am the creative director of SHEHU, a boutique design & development company that helps young apparel and accessory brand with their development.
FashionPennPal: What is you background?
Bela: I always had a passion for designing, but things didn’t start getting real till I started taking classes at Moore. I’ve never had a job or internship where I learned what to do - I’m entirely self-taught. I feel as in this business that one either has it or they don’t.
FashionPennPal: What does a normal day consist of for you?
Bela: A lot of research, strategizing, and dreaming, haha.
FashionPennPal: Can you tell me little bit about NINO Brand? Do you design it, if so where does you inspiration come from?
Bela: NINO Brand is our ‘in-house’ line, and the closest project to my heart. I really don’t compromise design when it comes to NINO Brand - it is exactly how I’d like my woman to dress!
FashionPennPal: You recently showed NINO Brand at the PIFA Couture show (congrats!!!), what was it like showing in front of this many people, and with Ralph Rucci in the audience? How did you prepare?
Bela: It was truly an amazing experience - I loved every minute of the process. I didn’t do anything different than ordinary - I tried to express myself on the runway the same as I do everyday.
FashionPennPal: Who are some of your idols in terms of designers or business?
Bela: No one in particular, I suppose designers and businesses that stay true to their creative integrity.
FashionPennPal: What have been your greatest challenges and successes with Shehu?
Bela: Seeing new brands disappear before they make a mark. Seeing small little ideas transform in household names :).
FashionPennPal: What advice would you give someone wanting to get into the world of fashion?
Bela: Do your research!
FashionPennPal: What are some of you future plans for Shehu?
Bela: The main goal is to stay creative and have fun, that’s about it. We’re super excited for Lithe Wear to come out to Lithe Studio Boutiques (this is one of our dear projects and we can’t wait to share it with the world!).
FashionPennPal: Why did you choose Philadelphia as the headquarters of your business?
Bela: I’ve been in Philadelphia for almost 14 years now - it’s my city and it has been so good to me. Being an artist in this city is tough, but that comes with the territory of being an artist, no?
FashionPennPal: Thanks Bela! Everyone be sure to check out Shehu!
