Pandora Hearts vs. Vanitas no Carte

Aka. long-ass rant about VNC and PH accompanied by the total amount of zero (0) screencaps from the canon material, also featuring my poor grammar skills (for which I’m endlessly sorry) and the bits and scraps of knowledge on fiction / art I happen to posses.

Okay. First of all, I made this post solely so that I can babble about VNC in comparison to Pandora Hearts, because that’s what they taught me in high school – if you have one author and the said author has at least two works, then not talking about both of those works at once is just a waste of a perfectly good opportunity to fill up your essay with a lot of meta with the minimal effort. And I just can’t walk past a chance like that without a second glance. Not that this rant would lead anywhere (I also don’t have any cool theories to share, which is honestly pitiful and keeps me up at night), but still. Here I go and, by the way, I’m taking spoilers with me.

Quick TL;DR before we start: Jun Mochizuki’s progress as a storyteller is just insane and she should be prayed for in the dark times of art / writer’s block.

Finally - Chapter 7: Bunny

aka: 9 times Jay tries to win Voight over (intentionally and not so intentionally) and the 1 time he doesn’t need to.

Also on ff.net and AO3.

Many, many thanks to @justkillingtimewhileiwait for all of her help, listening to me bounce ideas off her, ramble on about what I wanted to write and mostly, the beta-ing. You are awesome! :)

Jay wasn’t waiting. He really wasn’t. If he couldn’t sleep and was instead laying on their bed, playing solitaire on his tablet, it was simply because he wasn’t tired. Even if they had started the day at nearly 6 a.m. and it was currently nearing 11 at night. It definitely was not because he was waiting for Erin to get home, worried about how her meeting with her mother had gone. Or was going, if that was the case. With Bunny, Jay could never tell if she truly wanted to see her daughter or the cop she was. And with Erin being the woman she was, she would give Bunny the time of day he would not if she believed her mother might have the tiniest inkling of actually wanting to be her mother.

Not that that would be the case today. Not after Bunny had approached them whilst heading back to the precinct after grabbing some lunch together, asking Erin for some time to talk. Insisting she come over to her place that evening, which Erin had brushed off and said she would meet her at the bar she was working at again, the only decent job the fickle woman could hold down.

And especially not when the two of them knew that Bunny’s new ‘friend’ was clearly a drug dealer, if not her supplier. As much as Jay had wanted to tell Erin exactly what he thought of her mother, something he had done so previously and numerously, he knew she still felt the primal need as her daughter to perhaps try to help her. To save her. Because if she could do it, then why couldn’t her mother?

Contemplating opening up Erin’s game of Candy Crush, which he knew she would kill him for but sometimes payback was a bitch when she had no need to play on his tablet, Jay froze as he heard the lock turn and the front door creak open.

He’d left the living room light on as was their tradition when one was home before the other, and he waited for her to appear in the bedroom doorway for a few seconds longer than he was happy to.

Hearing her keys being thrown onto the table by the door, her gun a heavy thump next to it, Jay got to his feet and left the tablet behind on the bed as he made his way out.

“Erin-” he began quietly, not wanting to disturb the quietness of the night. The words died on his tongue, no longer wanting to know what had happened when he saw the nasty bruise darkening her jaw, the corner of her bottom lip split.

She had spun towards him at his voice, having not heard him approach. “I’m okay, I’m okay,” she assured him, heading to grab some ice from the fridge dispenser with a tea towel in her hand.

“You’re not okay, Erin,” Jay all but snapped, unable to control the red hot rage that burnt inside of him at the sight of her marred features. He reached her in a few strides, gently skimming his fingertips over the other side of her jawline in a complete contrast to how he felt. Somehow, she managed to bring it out in him, cooling his hotheadedness and calming impulsive actions. The injury was hidden by the makeshift ice pack she was pressing to both her jaw and lip, so he instead tilted her head up to meet her eyes. “Who did this to you?”

“Don’t-” she began, but he knew the answer the second the question left his mouth.

“It was him, wasn’t it? That dealer Bunny’s been hanging out with recently? Is that why she wanted to see you?” he asked in rapid fire, not even giving her the time to reply to one before the next question slipped out.

“Jay, please-” Erin tried again, her voice somehow calm and soothing though he failed to hear it over his own anger. Dropping his hand from her face, he took a step back and held onto the counter behind him in an iron knuckle grip instead.

“I’m going to kill him,” he stated venomously, features hardening as he conjured up the man’s face in his mind from the brief look that afternoon, and imagining him even daring to lay a hand on his girlfriend, his partner. Jay had no problem with returning the favour ten-fold.

poldarkmmmuses musings: The Four Swans – one year and a WHOLE lotta Poldark after

THIS POST IS RIDDLED WITH POLDARK SPOILERS FOR THE FOUR SWANS. AND THERE IS SWEARING. CONSIDER YOURSELVES WARNED.

I’d only been active in the fandom for a few months when I read tFS for the first time. And I admit, I was quite vocal about the things that happened in it. Since I’ve become more involved in the fandom, have watched series one of the 2015 countless times, analyzed both S1 and S2 to pieces, and led interweb bookclubs on both The Black Tide and The Four Swans for the Poldark Podcast, I can say some of my thoughts around Graham’s sixth book have mellowed. This is not to say I’m all warm and fuzzy about Hugh Armitage all of a sudden. I’m just no longer demanding his head be served to me on a platter.

I have a trigger when it comes to adultery. I’ve mentioned it in a few locations as well as the podcast. This goes back all the way to when I was a kid (back in the Stone Age). Without getting into too many details, my dad had affairs. The last one broke up my folk’s marriage. At the time, I was all about being on Team Mom. It wasn’t until after she’d passed and I’d learned some of the KRAYKRAY shit happening in their relationship at the time of that last affair that I began to understand why my father made the choices he did. This perspective has doubled as I approach the twenty year mark on a less-than-ideal marital situation.

So, what do I get with all of this life-wisdom heaped onto my head?

There are no such things as Soulmates™. I say this specifically to address some of the anonymous asks that have come into the @poldarkpodcast inbox. Here’s a sample (tweaked spelling and punctuation a bit):

…not enjoying the four swans don’t like how Graham comes up with plot devises to constantly split up Ross and Demelza. he gave them a break in Black Moon, wonder if that’s why we talk about it so much because of heartache. I think in Black Moon Ross loves Demelza more then ever but as you said, there is now a chink in Demelza’s armor, she loves Ross still but it’s not the same as before the betrayal, she changed, lost faith, not on pedestal anymore, because if she was as happy as she seemed in Black Moon she wouldn’t want to have known Hugh, just friends who enjoy company etc, if you in love with husband you don’t sleep with a man who you hardly know, just to make him happy, its as bad as Ross sleeping with Margaret because she fed up, this was wrong of Graham to do this with Demelza because it alters how her character has been so far in the books, i know she has flaws, reckless with Julia, Verity etc but not unfaithful to Ross, hate the four swans. I agree with all what you said, she didn’t need to have sex with him on the beach, she could of said no, spoils it for me, hate betrayal, makes a mock of their marriage and i thought they were soul mates in literature, don’t think so. What do you you think Michelle

Folks are undeniably upset about Demelza’s adultery and have said they were supposed to be Soulmates™ (the trademark is my addition to the term that is posted). Other than the dictionary definition of the word, I simply cannot believe there is only one person on a planet of seven billion that I’m meant to be in a perfect, shiny, awesome state of being for the rest of my life . If that’s the case and I’m current with that person, then whoever is responsible for the soulmate matching job in my current situation is about to get a size-ten Doc Marten upside the head because why? EPIC FAIL.

It’s a lovely, romantic notion, to be sure, to be with a single person in one’s life and never encounter moments of suck, the whole “happily ever after” idea. And yes, there are many couples out there who have been able to sustain a loving, committed relationship with the same person who used to snap their bra straps in junior high school or whatever. What I’ve discovered is what lies beneath those “soulmate-type” couples most if not all of the time is unwelcome compromise, societal pressures to stay together, despite what would be better for all concerned, and/or a SHIT-ton of hard, heartbreaking and heart-mending work that chips away on the very foundations of their partnership. This can include infidelity (emotional or physical), lack of communication, grief and loss, changes in dynamic (e.g. the traditional bread winner loses their job, so the other partner becomes the breadwinner and all of the mindfucking that goes into that. Don’t ask me how I know this). Which brings me to my next point…

Marriage is hard frakking work. There’s a reason why I haven’t bounced out of this less than ideal relationship. Or, I should say, YET. It’s far too easy to bail on a situation where the person you married has left the toilet seat up or has left the cap off the toothpaste one too many times. Living one’s life with another person, a person who is doing the same amount of growing and changing as you are, requires strong communication, opportunities to be independent in one’s hobbies or activities, and a whole bunch of other stuff. The first one, communication, is the thing that glues everything together. If you’re not willing to do the work, accept those moments when you’ve been the horse’s ass and need to apologize or say “I don’t think I love you anymore”, then stick with dating and booty calls.

So why blather about this stuff on a Poldark blog? Because the Poldark series is NOT a fairy tale, like Beauty and the Beast or The Little Mermaid. It is all about a marriage, through its turmoil and betrayal; its healing and forgiveness, that spans thirty-plus years. We encounter two of the greatest injuries to the Poldark marriage in Warleggan and The Four Swans. By the end of the latter, BOTH Ross and Demelza, our power couple, the Soulmates™, the hero and heroine of the series, have committed adultery, but emotional AND physical adultery and are at a very precarious place in their relationship. And as much as I want to rage and howl at both of them – and I do, every single time I re-read these books, I do – the emotion I am left with is a bone deep disappointment, the same disappointment I had when I was a kid and discovered my father’s failings, and when I was an adult, and discovered my mother’s failings. Feet of clay.

Now, neither of them were hapless victims or perpetrators of their decision making. As the saying goes, it takes two to tango. I’ve got ZERO love for either Elizabeth or Hugh, see both of them as being selfish, manipulative individuals (I’ve at least backed away from the predator label I’d slapped on Armitage my first read-through of tFS…see? An old dog can learn new tricks) and have much to do with how things shake out. Communication across the board for these four was ridiculously flawed and craptastic. Ultimately, it was the folks who’d made the promises that day in June 1787 that are responsible for ignoring the “You Shall Not Pass” line.

Why does Demelza’s adultery affect me more than Ross’s? Believe me, I’ve asked myself this question more times than I care to think about. Maybe it’s because she’d been the injured party first? Because she is so intuitive and has such well-honed Spidey senses and they’d been screeching in her ear from the moment she met Hugh? Because despite her saying she was content with Ross, in love with him and only wanted to be his wife, it feels like she was saying all of those things with her fingers crossed behind her back? Sadly, she doesn’t accept the truth of the situation until after she’s given herself to Hugh. Even after she acknowledges Jud’s tale telling and Ross’s secret meetings (which she assumes are ongoing rather than the single incident) as something that’s niggled at the back of her mind and, in the moment of decision, “eroded her will”, she acknowledges that it only had the power to do so because her impulses towards the act were strong enough that they would have leapt upon any excuse to justify the act. Even Hugh’s romance and fawning and charm and crap weren’t enough to sweep her away. Further, it isn’t until she thinks of the damage the knowledge of her infidelity would have upon her relationship with Ross should he ever find out that she begins to feel bad about what she’s done. She then reconsiders the possibility that Hugh’s romantic overtures had more of an impact on her than she’d thought earlier (of course they did, otherwise you wouldn’t have kept all of those damn poems, Demelza). She is sorry for committing adultery, not because she is any less in love with Ross, nor because she’s remorseful about having the experience of making love with another man (because she’s not)…it is because it has eradicated trust and loyalty, just as Ross’s visit to Elizabeth in Warleggan did. And even then… it’s not until Hugh is dead that she finally, FINALLY seems to come to terms with her actions and motives behind them: a) she was instantly attracted to him; and b) she’d fallen in love with him – long before she learned of Ross’s meeting with Elizabeth – and followed her heart’s desire.

If SHE casts aside her knowledge of Ross and Elizabeth’s meeting(s) and Ross’s fall from grace as an excuse for her behavior, who are we to continue to point at them as being the thing that would have kept her from doing what she did? Hugh’s not the only one who has had Demelza on a pedestal. We have as well. And her fall from that lofty position hurts so incredibly much.

tl;dr If I could say one thing it would be this: Ross? Leave that sonofabitch at Quimper. He ain’t nothing but trouble.

Want to read the passage where Demelza ponders all of this? It’s behind the cut. Happy to talk about this – I know I’ll enjoy the conversation. Well… enjoy might not be the right word for it, but you know what I mean. :-)

Old Vs New

I have drawn fire twilight way back in 2012, (Before she got her awesome wings). Its interesting to compare old vs new work. Anatomy definitely is different. Theres more color than just red and orange, plus you can actually tell her body is white.  Pose is more interesting with her in a lower stance than simply standing, and of course the fire is more lively too.

Theres still plenty I could improve on, but for now its good to see what has changed, and learn from the mistakes. To fellow artists, don’t fret about mistakes, get good critique feedback and work at it. It’s what helps us learn.

Analyzing the Morality of Bluestar’s Decision to Give Up Her Kits

By LZRD WZRD

One of the most dramatic revelations in the Warriors series occurs in Forest of Secrets when Bluestar tells Fireheart that she gave up her kits Mistyfoot, Stonefur, and Mosskit so that she would be able to assume the role of ThunderClan’s deputy instead of Thistleclaw - a cat who she perceived to be a cruel, bloodthirsty warrior who would lead the clan into unnecessary battles if he became leader. The narrative significance of this is mainly to highlight a parallel and contrast between her and Graystripe. Both of them had kits with a RiverClan warrior and both had to make a decision between family and Clan. Whereas Bluestar chooses her duty to her clan at the expense of mothering her kits and unfortunately Mosskit’s life, Graystripe instead chooses to be a father for his kits and move to their clan instead staying loyal to ThunderClan. Not only does this all make for a fascinating plot development, but it poses a really interesting moral question: which of them made the right decision?

On Twitter I asked the question: was Bluestar right to give up her kits and the overwhelming majority went with the neutral answer “Even StarClan doesn’t know”. It’s notable that in Secrets of the Clans, StarClan is having heated debates about Bluefur’s decision to take her kits to live with Oakheart in RiverClan with essentially these same three arguments. This is actually a really fascinating world-building moment because it confirms that StarClan lacks true knowledge of the future or has any kind of coherent moral authority. This begs the question of whether there’s something more to this spiritual afterlife than just StarClan. But I digress, that’s a topic for another video and apparently even the writers don’t seem to know. Anyways, the main argument in favor of Bluefur giving up her kits is:

  • Bluefur must give up her kits because Thistleclaw will be a terrible leader compared to her (with a possible extension being that Bluefur is giving up kits that should never have been born and in doing so is making amends for her disloyalty towards her clan).

Note how the reason for her decision is based off of its consequence - she’s doing this to prevent Thistleclaw from becoming leader. This kind of reasoning is known as consequentialism. Whether this action is considered right is being derived from its effect, rather than the action itself. People like utilitarian consequentialist John Stuart Mill propose that the action which maximizes happiness is the right one to take. So according to this philosophy, whether Bluefur was right or wrong comes down to whether it’s better to live in a Thistleclaw-controlled ThunderClan with her kits or being leader of ThunderClan without her kits. This is the framework that is used prominently in both the book and in fandom discussions of this question, including my own. We’ll never know exactly what would have happened if Thistleclaw had become deputy, so it’s difficult to argue the effects, even in hindsight. Let’s assume arguendo that Thistleclaw was just as bad as Bluefur thought. ThunderClan fights many unnecessary battles, probably resulting in deaths on both sides. This is opposed to the death of just Mosskit and then whatever deaths occurred due to Bluestar being leader. It may actually be correct to assume that Bluestar being leader led Tigerclaw to murder innocent cats such as Redtail. Would Tigerclaw have lied and schemed his way to the top if his mentor and role model Thistleclaw had appointed him to be his deputy? He may have felt right at home there and been a loyal warrior until Thistleclaw’s death. There’s no reason to think ThunderClan would have turned into an extreme, immoral place like Brokenstar’s ShadowClan or Tigerstar’s TigerClan. They probably would have been more in the vein of a Mudclaw-led clan, but not a tyranny that murdered its own members. So in a weird, twisted way, maybe Bluestar becoming leader led to the rise of Tigerstar. Since this is a consequentialist framework, it may be that hindsight condemns Bluestar for inadvertently creating an even bigger monster than Thistleclaw! Additionally, we can assume that Thistleclaw never lets Rusty join ThunderClan, which would dramatically shift the future of the clans in likely a negative way.

Now in fairness, hindsight isn’t fair in judging the morality of Bluefur’s decision. To do that, we can only use the information that she had to work with, which was Thistleclaw will probably be a deadly, destructive leader, while Bluefur would be a wiser, more tempered leader. The trade-off is whether giving up her kits and the pain she and they will both go through is better or worse than letting Thistleclaw rule. Given that, I think it’s fair to say that something that will only affect a few cats is better on paper than a ruler who will effect all of the cats in all of the clans and almost certainly cause a greater amount of suffering than what’s possible from Bluefur and her kits. By this reasoning, Bluestar ultimately made the right decision from a utilitarian standpoint. Of course this argument hinges on the assumption that Thistleclaw would have been as bloody of a leader as Bluefur believed and that becoming a deputy and going through a leader ceremony would have in no way tempered his aggressive urges. As such, this debate will never be settled, because there’s no way everyone can agree on what the actual consequences of Bluefur’s decision actually are.

However, there is another way of framing this debate that can give us a definitive answer as to whether or not Bluefur made the right decision. German philosopher Immanuel Kant proposed the Categorical Imperative as means for determining whether or not an action is right or wrong. This falls under the general ethical philosophy known as deontology. While consequentialism determines the morality of an action based on its consequences, deontology determines its morality based on whether the action adheres to a rule or set of rules. Kant’s rule, The Categorical Imperative, states that you should “Act only according to that maxim whereby you can, at the same time, will that it should become a universal law.” What this basically means is that you should only do something if you think everyone else should also do it regardless of context. An example of this would be stealing. I think we can all agree that it’s bad to steal $1 from a homeless person in the street. What the Categorical Imperative says is that it’s equally wrong to steal $1 from Donald Trump. Stealing is wrong - period. The morality is based on the action itself, not the players or the relative consequences. This example reflects the universal authority of the biblical commandment “Thou shalt not steal.”

The way we can apply this philosophy to Bluefur’s decision to give up her kits is to ask: “Is giving up your kids something that we should want everyone to do, regardless of their situation?” I think most everyone here will agree that no, we shouldn’t want everyone to give up their kids. To use an example from the Warriors universe, if it’s wrong to give up our kids because they had an accident and injured their jaw, then it’s also wrong to give up our kids because doing so will prevent a dangerous leader from taking control of ThunderClan. Remember, the reasons and consequences don’t matter under the Categorical Imperative - it’s simply a matter of principle.

So given that, it’s up to you to decide what reasoning you buy into. Kant’s Categorical Imperative would say Bluefur made the wrong decision in principle, while Mill’s belief in maximizing happiness would likely say she was right, although you’ll never be able to have a definitive cause-effect analysis that everyone can agree to. I think in the end, the real lesson we can learn from this is don’t mess around with those darn RiverClan cats. They cause nothing but trouble! But actually, this whole debate just highlights what an awesome inclusion this was to the story. I’ve said this before, but the gray morality in Warriors is huge benefit to the series and the readers. All too often stories spoonfeed you right and wrong and while that’s not necessarily a bad thing in its own right, Warriors gives us something different. It gives us difficult issues and characters who never have a clear choice. In the end, it’s up to you to decide what’s right and wrong in your life, whether that means strictly abiding to a code or universal principles - or following your heart and the pull of goodness.

Ahh so sorry for the long wait omg! But I promise the last chapter will be out shortly after this one! Then that will have been it for this story already :o Such fun times ehhehe. This one is in Natsu’s POV again as usual, but the last one will be Lucy’s. >B)

It had been seven days.

Seven days since the discovery that still made Natsu doubt his sanity.

He was dating a witch.

And he still had no idea how to confront her about her secret hobby.

With every passing day, though, he wondered how he had not found her out earlier. It all made so much sense now. The clues had all been there.

The fact that he had not been able to lose his keys no matter what after she had tinkered with them, the spell book she had left lying around openly… probably even the little black cat keychain, now that he thought about it.

Hell, she even had a fucking scythe on the wall.

He eyed it from his place on her couch, where it hang with all her other kitchen utensils. She really had a whole arsenal. When he’d asked her to lend some, she’d had to explain some intricate gadget’s functions to him more than once.

Lucy - his girlfriend, he thought with the proud giddiness of a man in fresh, fresh love - had her legs on his lap, where he’d unconsciously started rubbing her bare skin. Her nose was deep in a book, and it seemed she had lost contact with the world around her. For at least twenty minutes, she hadn’t moved at all.

Before that, she had shifted and twisted about a million times until she had finally found a position that actually suited her, and now Natsu felt much like he did when Happy snuggled into a fluffy ball on top of him.

He couldn’t move.

It came close to sacrilege to disturb a creature in so much obvious peace and content. Especially when she looked like a supernatural being while doing so.

Except, of course, she was.

She was supernatural.

Natsu took a deep breath, pondering if now was the time to break the question. Lucy bit her lip in concentration, and his eyes automatically followed the motion, a shudder travelling down his spine.

She noticed his intense stare, regarding him over the rim of the book in her hands. Half her face was obstructed from view by the damned thing, but by the way the skin around her eyes wrinkled, he knew she was giving him a large, relaxed smile.

Natsu smiled back, all of his building determination shattered with that simple glance of hers.

Everything was perfect right now.

Did he really want to risk that?

But before the sudden fear - a feeling he was a stranger to 363 days of the year - could overwhelm him, he opened his mouth, his hands stilling on her shins.

“Lucy…”

Ronda Rousey
  • So for the past 24 hours I have seen a shit ton of people bash and slam Rousey because she got too much in her head the night before the fight. However, before that they were aboard her bandwagon! The minute she lost, they all jumped off and joined Holly's Bandwagon! Those people were never her fans in the first place! Yes she may have gotten a little to cocky and a little to distracted in the months leading up to the fight. But, I still support her 100%! Nothing will make me just support a champion. She earned that belt and kept it for as long as destiny let her! 12 undefeated matches. She has ONE lost! ONE! So id rather be a fan of a woman who is the definition of badass than be a fan of someone simply because she has a belt. Holly was and is an awesome fighter. She knew and studied Rousey and that worked to her advantage! But, Rousey will get that belt that is rightfully hers back! #Rousey #AlwaysTeamRousey!

I love Harley Quinn and I will follow her and the bad choices of her writers into the deep dark abyss. Doesn’t mean I can’t still be critical of it.

People have this weird mindset of having to either adore something or despise it with no inbetweens. You’re allowed to pick and choose what you like. You can say “I don’t like the depictions of the characters but I’m still very excited for the movie.” I don’t understand people who boycott things after they see one thing they don’t like. That’s just life.

I don’t like coleslaw but that doesn’t mean I don’t order a dish I like that comes with coleslaw. I just don’t eat the coleslaw!

Niki’s Endless List of Favorite Ladies 5/?? (in no particular order)

Commander Shepard, From Mass Effect Series

No matter what face you give her, myself having gone for my original dark-haired Shepard with a bun at first and then later using the default red-head, Commander Shepard is an awesome lady. Mass Effect does offer some choices and personalization to the approach, but that doesn’t change the fact that this lady is saving the fucking galaxy! She doesn’t ask for the job, and she definitely feels the emotional weight of every decision she makes. Whether you go in guns blazing with a mean streak or try to make peace across all species, no one other than Shepard can get it done. She makes friends and loyal comrades of aliens and humans alike, all people who would lay down their life for her. She kicks ass, she solves problems, she outsmarts ancient machines. She can fall in love, or simply have important friendships. The wonderful voice acting and the great storyline bring to life this awesome lady who I think all players of Mass Effect feel a personal connection to.
