she's a character and i love characters

More commissions of @shenanimation‘s characters! The first one is Gina as commissioned by @zirocoh. The second is Sally as commissioned by anonymous.

While Hannibal and Will got the most cheers during the Hannibal Musical tonight, as they always do ❤️~, I was really amazed at being able to experience first hand how enthusiastic and supportive people are of Margot abd Alana. The entire audience showed so much genuine love and excitement for them.

Something similar goes for Molly: I have never seen Molly hate in the Hannibal fandom personally, but it was so refreshing to see in person that people really do not hate Molly just ‘cause she’s a female character and Will’s wife, and the Will and Molly scene even got some aww’s. In most cases from the same people who were cheering for Hannibal and Will before and after it, I’m sure, since virtually /everybody/ was screeching during the hannigram moments. This is something I’ve never seen.

I love Bryan for making complex, compelling female characters that are so easy to grow fond of, I’m grateful to him for, to quote him, shitting in the pot, and I love this fandom for the genuine appreciation most of us have for these awesome female characters.

We're still talking about representation???? As someone who has a noticable limp almost all the time most of the time, hates people touching her without notice or permission, and who has severe anxiety in many cases, the fact that a character like Kaz is still allowed to be badass as hell is bloody amazing. The lack of physically disabled characters in a positive light is so few, and almost none of them are major characters. And it was the greatest thing to see myself in Kaz like that tbh.

yes yes i love this. this brings an excellent point—there was good representation beyond physical appearances. leigh also handled the trauma and the mindset of these characters delicately, and she showed despite their personal adversities they were all still strong as hell. it was good to see how often they struggled internally and how in some cases we literally see them summoning strength and courage to just keep going when they felt like they couldn’t. i know i said it before but these characters are just so fleshed out

but you’re right about the lack of physically disabled characters. they’re always treated like they can’t do much, but with kaz it seemed like there was literally nothing he couldn’t do. i’m so glad we got to see this kid with a limp and cane do some incredible, bad ass things.

Reasons why people need to give Mon El a break:

- He is from another planet, stuck on Earth with no one from home to understand the way he is feeling

- He essentially has no support system other than Kara

- Everything he thought he knew is probably wrong, such as how Kryptonians were supposed to be horrible people

- He almost died by an attack on aliens

- In the Thanksgiving episode (I think), Mon El asks how mating works on Earth and then asks if Kara has chosen her mate after being told people pick their own mate. Then, that Mxy- whatever showed up claiming to love Kara and she says she’s gonna marry him- IMAGINE HOW CONFUSED AND UPSET MON EL WAS AFTER THAT

I get that he is a flawed character. But that is okay!!! Most characters do have flaws just like people!!! It’s okay to want Kara to end up with a different person, but maybe just cut him a little bit of a break???

(a/n): Because I love lazy Sunday mornings, rainy days, and old school Maroon 5. ♡

Rain droplets fell onto the glass window and filled the quiet room with a gentle pitter patter. Rays of sunlight usually pierced through her eyelids, forcing her to wake up. But on this dreary Sunday morning, grey clouds blanketed the sky and greeted the city with a morning mist.

A soft, acoustic melody wafted through the still air indicating that it was time to take on a new day. Her eyelashes fluttered like fairy wings as she recognized the familiar tune. Her hand emerged from under the covers and repeatedly patted the top of a small wooden night stand, trying to grab her phone with what little consciousness she had. Once she felt the familiar studs and music note charms of her phone case, she pressed the home button and forcefully jabbed the screen. A peaceful silence filled the room once more and her arm retreated back into the sky blue blankets. After several minutes, she eventually opened her eyes to see tiny beads of water racing down the glass. No hints of sunlight were present this morning, but the sound of cars driving down the puddle-filled streets indicated that the city was alive and running.

“It’s more about the relationships between the characters. A lot of people go into this show thinking that this guy has to choose between these two girls, and that’s the plot of the show. But that’s very much not our show. These characters are working through real issues. The main plot point of Season 1 is Jason’s murder. It’s definitely not the love triangle. I don’t think there’s even that much of a love triangle. Betty has already accepted the fact that Archie doesn’t love her that way, and she knows you can’t force someone to think differently about you. She needs to move on.

Archie is such a mess! They’re just two people who are so much better off as friends, but she doesn’t realize it just yet. That’s OK. She’s young. She’ll realize it eventually.”

“He’s a confused teenage boy. He doesn’t know what he wants, romantically or for his future. He’s just lost. She has sympathy for him, but she’s trying to protect him. At the end of the day, she doesn’t want him to get hurt or wrapped up in something dangerous. I think her opinion of him, as a person, doesn’t change, but her opinion of him, as a romantic figure in her life, changes. She grew up with him as a best friend, and when you grow up with a guy as a best friend when you’re a girl, it’s hard not to see yourselves becoming romantically involved. You’re like, “We’ve been best friends. Why don’t we just be together?” That’s what she thought. Maybe she wasn’t really in love with him. Maybe she just thought she was because it felt like the right thing to do. It wasn’t easy, but it was easier than you would think for her to get over the fact that they shouldn’t be together, romantically. She just had an idea in her head of the perfect couple that was Betty and Archie, but in reality, it wasn’t there and it wouldn’t have been as good.

It was important to us that Archie did not come between these girls. He does for a second, but the main goal of our show – and Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa] talked about it beforehand – is that Archie is not going to stand between a friendship between these two girls who are destined to be best friends. They are classic frenemies, but on our show, they’re just friends. They just love and care about each other. Betty has a different love interest in the show. She comes to terms pretty fast with the fact that Archie doesn’t see her in a romantic way. She gets it and can’t be mad at him for not feeling a certain way about her. And she can’t get mad at Veronica for wanting to be with Archie ‘cause she gets how great of a guy he is. Veronica wasn’t intentionally trying to hurt Betty.”

Something that really bothers me is that the more butch/masculine characters aren't treated very well. Like everyone's saying, Jasper keeps being portrayed/taken as a one sided villain. Steven bubbling Bismuth didn't solve anything. Sugilite (I know she dresses femininely in a way but she's still butch in my opinion) has only been portrayed as a brute and an antagonist. A lot of people love Ruby (I do of course) but even she seems to be portrayed as just anger and muscle

su definitely has a bad track record when it comes to the treatment of their butch characters. Ruby is probably the best treated out of them bc while she’s a hothead, she’s still one of the “good guys”.

Okay on the topic of identifying with a SoC character. I never truly understood what representation could mean to someone. I always felt like people were exaggerating when they talked about identifying with a character. But then I read SoC and was able to physically identify myself with Nina. And I honestly cried when she was repeatedly described as round. The power of representation is incredible. I really hope that in the future more people will be able to relate to characters bc its amazing.

this is beautiful ah i’m happy you found someone to identify with ♡♡ and can we talk about how it’s obvious that she’s gorgeous and comfortable in her own skin. we were given a chubby girl in canon who was not defined by her weight at all, a girl who absolutely loved and embraced herself. being fat usually comes with such a negative connotation, but leigh was not having any of that. she molded these characters with so much care it’s incredible. it’s not often we’re presented with body positivity that’s actually inclusive of more than one type.

may I ask esme for the question meme?

002 | give me a character & i will tell you

  • how i feel about this character:

oh, i love her. she is the worst person in the world and i can’t help but love it. i honestly can’t even explain why i like her. i think it’s at least partly the fact that she’s so contradictory - she spends all of her time following trends, and yet simultaneously does absolutely whatever she wants, with no mind for the consequences or anyone else’s opinion. she’s confusing and great.

  • all the people i ship romantically with this character:

i guess it depends on what a ship is, and what romantically is. i like esme and olaf as a pair, but i don’t exactly think they’re romantic - they are well-suited, and i’m sure they occasionally have a good laugh, probably at people they consider less brilliant than themselves, but they don’t care about each other, and i’ve always thought it was very uncharacteristic for the baudelaires to believe that they did. also, esme and jerome is amusing, but it’s also terrible. i recently wrote some jacques/esme and unfortunately now can’t help but ship that too, so…

  • my non-romantic otp for this character:

i…don’t think there are any? her relationship with carmelita was funny while it lasted, but i’ve always found it a bit depressing - she’s so obviously using her to further her ego.

  • my unpopular opinion about this character:

i’m not sure i have one. esme is a terrible person with no apparent real feelings or conscience - is that an unpopular opinion, or just canon?

  • one thing i wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:

okay i wish we’d just had a bit more explanation of some of the things that probably actually are canon - the netflix series might decide to fill in some of the blanks, as it seems they already are with the quagmire fire. what was the purpose of marrying jerome, when the baudelaire mansion was already destroyed? is the sugar bowl legitimately the only reason she hates beatrice?

  • my otp:

i guess…in the grand scheme of things…it’s olaf. they’re a hideous couple, but god they deserve each other. they are ridiculously alike, and they so transparently enable each other to be as terrible as they really are. it’s like the way she’s flatters him and calls him a genius all the time - and then, as soon as there’s an hint of a disagreement, immediately stops. she loves getting her own way without getting her hands dirty, and he loves being adored - they are perfect for each other, in all the worst, most disgusting ways.

  • my cross over ship:

this isn’t what the question is asking but you know who actually is esme? madeline fucking ashton, from death becomes her. it’s not a fandom so nobody will have heard of it, but still. a ship isn’t jumping out at me, but i’m sure there are loads of obvious ones…

  • a headcanon fact:

genuinely esme’s special skill is actually manipulating people into doing things. in a way, she almost manages it with the baudelaires, without even knowing it - if you don’t choose the wicked thing, what in the world will you do? what do they do, in the next couple of chapters? set fire to part of a carnival. somehow, despite her hideous personality, she manages to get almost everyone to do exactly what she wants them to.

A Night in the Approach by @ma-sulevin.

This one is very NSFW, just a warning from the outset.

The story appeared on my dash this week and I set it aside in a little email to myself to go back and read at some point. Am I glad I did because WOW! This was really well done.

I love the portrayal of Cullen as more dominant, too often I see him written as very pliable (which you see in in-game situations as well but I think in some fiction his character complexity gets lost). So, it was nice to see someone playing with the more dominant side of his characterization.

I also liked Asha. She seems to be a character who knows precisely what she wants and isn’t afraid to demand it.

And I love the interactions between the three of them. Those little hints of could be jealousy as well as the cooperation. It was very hot, and really well-crafted. A lot of times smut can really lose the emotion and connection to character and wind up concentrating on the graphic. But this piece manages to keep things in line.

So, if you’re looking for a sultry threesome, Asha, Cullen, and Rylen might be right up your alley.

002 for sunny

thanks for the ask!

send me…

002 | give me a character & i will tell you

  • how i feel about this character:

sunny is the best baby in the whole entire world. i absolutely love her. when i first read the books i don’t think i cared about her that much but on my next few rereads i realized that she really does have her own personality (and it’s a great one). she is so sassy and so brave. most of the time sunny is just hilariously not frightened of the villains, for instance in book 10, which i think is really entertaining.

  • all the people i ship romantically with this character:

nobody. even if i age sunny up i can’t think of anyone i would ship her with.

  • my non-romantic otp for this character:

the incredibly deadly viper? they were going to be an amazing team.

  • my unpopular opinion about this character:

this is probably quite an unpopular opinion, but i think sunny was written a bit oddly. it’s very important to the books that violet is an excellent inventor and that klaus has great researching skills. i just didn’t feel biting was really a good enough counterpart - i know she’s a baby, but i feel there could have been something better done. also, the fact that she becomes interested in cooking is great, but it makes no sense. however gifted she is, how is she learning without even having access to another person who can cook, or any equipment, or any recipes?

  • one thing i wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:

to be honest i wish sunny had been the one to solve more of their problems as a group. i always felt - understandably, as she’s a baby - that klaus and violet did the majority of the problem-solving, and this is becoming even more apparent in the netflix series. i kind of get it, but also i hope there’s a big deal made out of sunny climbing the elevator shaft with her teeth because that is really key. she isn’t just an add-on - she is as great as her siblings. i wish in both the books and netflix that we got to see more of sunny being the hero.

  • my otp:

erm i just don’t have one sorry. my favourite relationships for sunny really are her siblings.

  • my cross over ship:

ok i’m awful at these. i just can’t ship sunny, i’m sorry

  • a headcanon fact:

my headcanon is that sunny is really, really good with animals. this is a bit of a cliche, because she can’t talk, but i love to imagine that somehow in the snicketverse animals can kind of understand sunny a little bit better than the adults.

anonymous asked:

What's your favorite episode of the orignal anime?

All of the best LL episodes are in S2 and conveniently all in a row. In chronological order it’s Nico’s character episode, Rin’s character episode, and the Halloween episode.

Nico’s episode was so sweet. It was great to see a different side of her and learn about her family life, since most of S1 focused on her being bossy and fake (but still lovable, just not in the big-sisterly way we found out about here). The climax is really cute, I loved how Nozomi and Eli worked together to help Nico show her siblings the best live she could. Overall an adorable and memorable episode.

Rin’s episode is the one people tend to bring up when mentioning good moments in the anime. It’s arguably the most relatable and well done piece of character development, and it helped make Rin feel as important as any other µ’s girl after she was sort of ignored in season 1.

And the Halloween episode is just the most fun in the original anime. Between the KISS gimmick, the role swap, and Dancing Stars on Me being really good, it’s just a really fun episode to watch.

anonymous asked:

I loved Code Lyoko as a kid! I really liked the idea of the show, the music, and everything! Odd and Aelita were my favorites! Odd because he's... odd, and Aelita because her hair was pink and she was a really deep character. I remember wishing that I could go to Lyoko. What about you? What was your favorite character and part about the show?

Code Lyoko happened for me at a time before I did a lot of the meta-analysis that I do currently, so I think for the most part I just kind of absorbed it. It also doesn’t help that I’ve never really done a comprehensive watch-through of the series; it was just whichever episodes were on when I happened to be watching TV.

Off the top of my head though, I think I really liked Yumi, but I was also super interested in XANA, and exploring them as a character rather than just a lurking presence. (Ironically I don’t think Odd stood out to me that much despite being everything young me adored- purple, a cat, the Funny One)

I think that really started when I saw the episode where Lyoko’s battery was dying and XANA overtook someone to save both themselves and Aelita- without really even the pretense of calling a ceasefire, just sort of grabbing Jeremie and going “Fix this. I brought what you need.”

That, and the episode with the Marabounta intrigued me. Like, again, I don’t recall if there ever was a time I felt like we ever really “met” XANA as much as just saw them interacting indirectly, but there always felt like there was a consciousness there- and not even one that was particularly angry at the warriors as much as inconvenienced by them and a little puzzled.

I remember doodling a lot of designs of what I thought XANA might look like if they manifested their own body in Lyoko or out of it- I sort of arbitrarily decided XANA was female, and my take on her was very tall, with a huge cleaver-type sword. I associated her a lot with the color orange, also, even though those signature specters are black.
