Ok so I got a short update for you. Last week I had my doctors appointement and it went really good, I’ve got a few ampuls of T and with that I needed to go to my family doctor so that she can inject it. The only problem was that my family doctor refused to do it, cause she didn’t want to bear the responsibility. So I went to another doctor who told me that he wants to have a few talks with me before injecting. So now I’m sitting at home with the t ampuls looking at me and it makes me really frustrating. My next appoinment ist Thursday (my lucky day I guess) and he said that he is going to inject it then. We will see. I no longer have my hopes high up but of course I hope he will do it this time. I thought the hard thing was getting the stuff but it’s actually harder to get it injected. o.O
Ok, ok, so I recently went to see the movie and let me tell you something… it’s more than just a movie, es una obra de arte.
I’m not joking, really, my expectations went beyond what I thought. It was amazing in every way. Well, maybe I’m gonna make some spoilers, but I found myself in need of telling you my experience as a Mexican point of view.
Because yes, I’m proudly Mexican.
1. Estás muy flaco, ¡come más!
This is funny.
In each family, at least in mine, it is normal that your grandmother wants to feed you because, according to her, you are very thin. And this reminded me a lot of my grandmother, whom I sweetly called Yaya. And yes, she is a strong, very determined woman who always fills my plate with lots of food.
But my Yaya’s food is always the best.
2. El maravilloso ambiente
There was no time to take the eyes off every scene, every color, every sound, literally. In the land of the living, the colors were relatively balanced, since it is a village, when dusk comes, which illuminates each house in a beautiful orange color. The colorful cemeteries and ofrendas captivated me greatly, for the passion with which we adorn the tombs of our departed is more than a tradition; is a connection that even Death itself can never take away.
3. ¡Música maestro!
My God, I can’t believe Disney has started its own theme with Mariachi music.
AY, AY, AY!!
That. was. Phenomenal.
The rest of the film, when I started to hear the voices of each character singing, dancing or even playing guitar, I almost felt like jumping and singing, clapping and dancing. If anything you must be sure, is that when a Mexican hears that kind of music, mariachi, trumpets, violins, the shoe, the drums, gives him an infinite desire to be celebrating forever.
4. La Chancla
La abuelita threatening everyone with la chancla.
That’s typical of mexican family. No, seriously. Once my Yaya threw me la chancla voladora when I was little and I was running and they had yelled at me to stop. That could not be missing!
If you have never been threatened with la chancla, or much less have hit you with it, trust me, as a mexican you had no childhood.
5. La Llorona
Originally, the song La Llorona is sung by Chavela Vargas. If you have never heard of it, I strongly recommend that you do so. That was totally amazing!
“Ay, de mí llorona. Llorona, de azul celeste. Ay, de mí llorona. Llorona, de azul celeste…”
“Y aunque me cueste la vida, llorona, no dejaré de quererte. Y aunque me cueste la vida, llorona, no dejaré de quererte…”
Miguel’s great-great-grandmother sang it with such sentiment made me shed tears, because I’ve heard it since I was a little girl. My grandmother sometimes sings it when she’s cooking.
6. Ay, Ernesto, no te rajes
Yes, yes, YES!!!
I actually knew that Ernesto de la Cruz was inspired by Pedro Infante and Jorge Negrete. OH, MY GOD! I love this man so much!
Maybe you can remember Jorge with the song Ay, Jalisco no te rajes! (From the movie The Tree Caballeros) There are other songs that I recommend you to hear. But my favorite has always been that.
Yo soy Mexicano, Mexico Lindo, Ella, Entre suspiro y suspiro, El Abandonado, and more…
Actually, this was a very original idea that I loved.
Alebrijes are imaginary beings made up of physiognomic elements of different animals, a combination of several animals, not only fantastic but also real. They’re handicrafts made with the technique of the cartonería, that they are painted with joyful colors and vibrant.
Alebrijes are one of the many wonders of Mexican art and a pride and the hallmark of Oaxaca. Having a alebrije or a collection of them at home is considered good luck and it is said that happiness will accompany anyone who owns one of these works of art. In addition, owning a alebrije is to possess the best of Mexican art, so vast, so colorful, so full of life and a beauty recognized internationally.
8. La Familia es primero
Even though The Book of Life is also another of my favorite movies, something made me even love more Coco than this.
It may sound a little… cliché, but for me the family has always been the most important thing. In fact, I quite identified with Miguel’s family. I could see in my own flesh not only my grandmother, but my uncles, my cousins and my other relatives. We don’t live in one house, we live in different places.
Traditionally my grandfathers are doctors, and they wanted my mother to be a doctor, but she preferred to study theater just as my father studied music. And there could be no doubt that her own daughter would also want to be an artist.
When I first went to Europe to visit the Universities, my grandmother, who repudiated the idea of being an artist, came to me one day and said to me: “It’s your life, you decide what you want and what you choose will be always good for me.”
The love of the family is so different and so unique, that to a certain point it made me realize that I do not need love of a couple if I have people that I can always talk to and who can support me too.
This song was definitely the best of the best. Full of feelings, full of dedication, I should applaud the effort for composers, I haven’t had the privilege of hearing it in English, but I think you should also listen to it in Spanish, and I say it because the song sounds infinitely cool. and with the voice of the characters, made my skin prickly and shed more tears.
“Hasta que en mis brazos tú estés… Recuérdame…”
10. Mama Coco
This, without a doubt, is my favorite. The entire character of mama Coco.
She may not appear more than some scenes from the entire film, but she is a very important and very captivating character. The relationship she has with Miguel is very special, an old mind woman and a big-hearted young man, the love of grandparents or great-grandparents is so strong and has no limits…
I have lived with my great-grandparents since I was two years old, and I loved them with all my heart just like them to me.
They are no longer with me…
But that does not mean that I have forgotten them. I remember them every day, every moment, when I least expect it, I sometimes dream about them. Sometimes I ask my grandparents how they were as young people, and I could imagine their lives in black and white films, where they wore dresses and suits.
The times of my great-grandfathers were hard, but were also beautiful, they enjoyed their entire life and were happy. Mama Coco was able to leave the world knowing that her father loved her and sang for the last time. Recuérdame with her great-grandchild.
What a beautiful scene, so simple, so lovely, that speaks for much.
Believe it or not, I loved Coco more than The Book of Life.
But I don’t think there has to be some anger cause somehow they seem to be something in como. For God’s sake, they do NOT seem at all, at least of the plot.
Is more than obvious that the producers and the cast made a mega effort to make the film an original work, and yes, it is original, cause there were so many unexpected twists, plus that, again, made me cry.
Don’t hate Coco, really, the movie is worth seeing, and it is such a beautiful and so cute way of putting the family theme.
The Book of Life talked about fear in being yourself: there is nothing wrong of being yourself and always follow your heart, while Coco talks about that it is okay to follow your dreams, but also think about your family, think about something that goes more beyond your expectations, but what you choose will always have the support of your family.
Two films focusing on Mexico, focusing on El Dia de los Muertos, two films that use direct themes, but that somehow made me realize what Life is like.
Sooo I am very curious on each characters backstory so here is a list. I’d love to receive more thoughts on this as well!
So far we know Neil is jewish with two parents who are divorced from an unknown reason. His dad is very dorky and nerdy while his mother, from comments made by Neil, is his preferred parent.
Dolph Houston is american, but was raised in a German army base and whose surname pertains to Scotland. No need to mention who he was modeled after.
David is 24 and one of the only characters alongside Max to have his age confirmed. He is also potentially Canadian after season 1 episode 6 with the comment made about his “papers” by Dolph. It is David’s reaction that leads me to believe this. We know after the end of season 2 that he isn’t blind to the realities of the world but rather chooses to see the bright side of things and tries to get others to see the same.
Max is of Indian descent with parents who are potentially abusive. He flinches back when people get in his face, he is already cynical at the age of 10 for pete’s sake and by the end of season 2, we know for a fact that they practically abandoned him at the camp.
Gwen I am unsure on. I looked up all her nicknames and most of them originate from Welsh (aka Britain). We know she
is a fan of Doctor Who and “wants to have his British babies.” But her skin ton has me a bit unsure until I looked up anglo-indian, which is a mix of Britain and India. Now this is just heavily perceived and in no way accurate without confirmation. (Although I can definitely see her being Hispanic as well.)
Harrison has made hints multiple times that he can use actual magic but when he makes objects disappear, he has difficulty bringing them back. By the finale of season 2, we learn his parents are terrified of him because he made his brother disappear.
EDIT: Okay, Harrison is totally Bill Cipher reincarnated as a human.
Nerris - I didn’t realize she was female until the last episode and I feel bad, but she wasn’t a character I cared for until the finale. After having seen her parents, I realized her entire family is made up of cinnamon rolls. They are the one and only perfect family.
Preston Goodplay lives with his grandma and tends to shout a lot because of her bad hearing. His last name as far as I can tell is just purely a play on words, or a pun if you will.
Nikki used to be a Flower Scout but after her traumatic experience of being driven out, she now seems to have an illness whenever she is near anything prim and proper. And her mom is a gold digger. Enough said.
Neil Armstrong Jr. “Space kid” - has always been so bazaar with his obsession with space but we later learn it is because his Uncle is Buzz Aldrin and his great grandpa is the actual Neil Armstrong. As his uncle commented: “Rocket fuel runs through his veins!”
For those don’t know, Aldrin is an American engineer and astronaut who was the second person to land and walk on the moon.
Gaylord Nurfington “Nurf” was sent to the camp to enroll for behavioral correction while his mom was in jail. He acts crude and bullies the other children, but you learn the reasoning for his behavior is because he was stereotyped into being a problem child at a young age. He was sent to a facility to work out his problems, only to become worse by the influence of other kids.
it is also revealed that he explored his sexuality in the past with a boy named Chris.
Meredith Miller "Ered“ - Ered is stereotyped into the cool kids category. It is confirmed she uses people for her own gain and performs poorly in school, hence the bad grades. Ered’s parents are two male agents of the government that have been keeping an eye on Campbell to validate his legitimacy.
Cameron Campbell is the founder of Camp Campbell, which he named after himself. He is a wanted man by the federal government and is always on the run. Apparently he is rich and powerful and at one point had been the prime minister of Thailand.
Ok forgive me but I just need gush about Anissa Pierce (AKA Thunder), a DC superhero, because first of all look at her, she’s amazing:
A badass woman of color whose power is to control her own density (which sounds kind of strange at first until you realize that means she can make herself completely invincible and kick everyone’s ass by dropping herself on top of them holy shit)
Not only that but she’s got a medical degree because she wanted to graduate before becoming a superhero so like???? she’s a fucking doctor oh my god
And she’s multilingual (English, French, and Spanish) so that’s amazing
But wait! There’s more!!
She has a girlfriend who is also a woman of color and is also super badass:
That’s Grace Choi, a seven foot tall (so big!!!) Amazonian and Asian-American woman who is clearly amazing.
Grace is an abuse survivor with superhuman strength, durability, and healing so good luck trying to beat her up, she’ll kick anyone’s ass
So anyway the two of them are cute together and they’re each super awesome LGBTQ+ women of color which is great
Also here they are playing video games because that’s adorable:
omg i got so excited at it i can’t even….. ugh. not only because i got an another request but also because this is an amazing idea and i’m in love with this, i think i need to change some things that were a little unclear to me but i hope you will like it anyway
sorry if it’s too short to your liking, & please let me know what you think REQUESTS ARE O P E N
[Y/N] was a pretty 15 year old girl, who liked spending her free time in her dad’s work. Jim Gordon’s work. She’d go there everyday after school.
She wanted to work at the GCPD in the future, not as a cop, but as a doctor, just like Doctor Leslie Thompkins. [Y/N] was a very smart girl, so everybody believed she would accomplish her goal.
[Y/N] enjoyed being with Doctor Lee, and as you may wonder, Doctor Lee enjoyed being with [Y/N]. She reminded her of herself when she was younger, so she was happy to answer any questions this sweet girl had.
“Harvey! Do you know where Doctor Thompkins is?"
[Y/N]’s been looking for her, she wanted to watch her work, as always. At first she wasn’t sure if that’s okay with her but she said she enjoys her company, much to [Y/N]’s joy.
"I don’t know, kiddo, check the morgue.” Answered busy Harvey Dent petting her on the head and walking away.
[Y/N] was walking to the morgue as she heard two cops talking about Jerome Valeska. They didn’t have a chance to meet but she saw him, that day when they found his dead mother. Dead because of him.
His cult was trying to bring him back from the dead…
“Can you believe he’s lying in the morgue right now with no face on?!”
“Shut up, this is disgusting.”
[Y/N] could agree on that. It seriously gave her chills.
But still, it didn’t change the fact she wanted to see how he looked now. She would never admit it to anyone, but she thought he was kinda cute. When he had a face and was still breathing, though.
[Y/N] entered the room humming a song she always does.
“Doctor Le–” she stopped dead in her tracks.
Before her, Lee Thompkins sitting on a table, tied up, looking over her should to see who just came in, worry filled her eyes as she noticed it’s [Y/N]. And there it was Jerome Valeska, standing across from Doctor Lee, his face all bloody and bandaged smiling widely at [Y/N]. He was wearing something very skin-tight…
“Hi there. Care to join us, Sweetheart?” Jerome walked towards her.
Now as he took a better look at her, he noticed she looked younger than him.
“Don’t cha a little too young to work here?”
[Y/N] only shrugged and gulped as he started to tie her up and told her to sit beside Lee.
They looked at each other, Lee’s gaze looked like it was asking her “Why did you have to come here exactly right now?!”
Jerome not interested in Lee anymore, moved to kneel before the pretty girl and looked into her eyes.
“Do you know where is my face, Precious?”
She stared at him. “Yeah… I heard Dwight took it and that he wears it like a mask..” She made a disgusted face.
Jerome exhaled deeply. “At least he’s a handsome fella now.”
[Y/N] cracked a small smile trying not to giggle. She didn’t want Doctor Lee to think she’s stupid.
Jerome glanced back at Lee and then back to [Y/N] and cupped her cheek.
“Now tell me, what exactly are you doing here? You can’t possibly be working here, you look young. How old are you anyway, Sweet Cheeks?”
“Umm..” She was unsure if she should tell him but he had something in his eyes that screamed “tell me all about you!”
“I don’t work here, I’m 15 years old. My dad is working here.”
“Don’t tell him that [Y/N]!”
“[Y/N]? Pretty name for a pretty girl.” He smirked and reached for something to gag Doctor Lee. “Who’s your dad? I’m dying to know.”
He started laughing like crazy. “James Gordon! I can’t believe it! And Doctor here is still talking to you after what your father has done to her poor husband?” He burst in another laugh.
[Y/N] wanted to defend her dad but she knew there was no point.
“Ohhh you’re coming with me, Gorgeous! You’re too fun to be left here!” He started to untie her.
And she left with him. Just like that.
Doctor Lee waited for someone to rescue her, they needed to find [Y/N]. They needed to find Jerome.
But she could’t stop thinking about that one thing that was still disturbing her.
The adoration in young girl’s eyes when she looked at the Ginger.
I had a really interesting conversation about the possibility of a female Doctor with my 12-year-old sister two weeks ago. Doctor Who is her favourite tv show. In the past, she has always underlined that she wanted her Doctor to be young and attractive and basically Matt Smith, thank you. I don’t think she would have had issues with a Doctor of Colour, but a female Doctor would have been almost as bad as, you know, some old guy.
I never had the impression that she put any deeper thought in the matter. And then two weeks ago, faced with the more tangible potential of a female Doctor happening, she looks at me and tells me she doesn’t think a female Doctor is a good thing, because a female Doctor can’t do the same things as a male Doctor? “Really?” - Unsure look. “I guess…?” Silence. “My favourite scenes are the ones where he realises that he’s wrong, that he’s an idiot, they couldn’t do that with a woman?” - “Why?” - “I mean, there’s not really a reason, but…”
There’s this back and forth in which she comes up with new things that a female Doctor probably cannot do, only to me met by her own confusion every time I question why. There’s no direct logical reasoning that goes “Female Doctor” -> “Incapable of all the Doctor’s ‘weak‘ moments”, but she also kind of holds on to that concern as a real one. She never fears that a female Doctor cannot be an awesome hero. She fears she cannot be an awesome, flawed one.
And that’s fascinating perspective from someone who is essentially half a generation younger than me, who grew up with a slightly different media landscape, with half a generations worth of new heroes. So here’s to the Doctor as a flawed female heroine, as someone who is silly, as someone with faults, as someone who gets to be wrong. In spite of being a 2,000-year-old alien, let her be a role model who is real.
