“You know, Sasuke-kun, we’ve been together for quite a while,” she says to him one night, as they are both walking home from their monthly Team 7 meetup at Ichiraku’s. He simply hums in response, and lets her snuggle up closer to him as his hands remain shoved in his pockets. This makes her frown. Matter of fact, Sakura reminds him, “Five year now, actually. And we’ve been living together for four of those years.”

He spares her an amused glance, the corners of his lips lifting in a small smirk. “I’m aware of this, Sakura,” he says, looking at the road ahead of them once more. She watches his lips twitch into a small, teasing smile. “I think you’re forgetting which one of us actually remembers anniversaries and appointments,” he adds.

She gasps and elbows him lightly, cheeks flushing as he chuckles softly and tucks his arms into his body, pulling her even closer. She smiles a little, and leans her head on his shoulder, relaxing. Neither of them say anything as they listen to the sound of their footsteps and crickets in the still market. Most people have gone home, and Sakura thinks it is because everyone can smell the rain in the air.

Even so, it is a nice, quiet night, she thinks to herself.

Hi! For Yana's post about her birthday (sorry about no links it wont let me attatch one), did that heart emoji thing in the cake cover up her actual name? Cause didn't she say she chose Yana Toboso for herself? I have no idea... I am so sorry, I can't speak Japanese so the only way I can see her blog is through you! Thank you so much for all that you do for this fandom!! TTwTT

Hi! Yes exactly, her assistants wrote her real name on the cake, that’s why she covered it up with that emoji! (Btw, “Yana Toboso” is her pseudonym, we don’t know what her real name is!)

Today my assistants got me a birthday cake. They said “We put the candles [on the cake] with the Phoenix pose in mind” (lol) For some reason they wrote my real name on the cake and sang the Happy Birthday song with my real name… Why!!?

i think the "did you even wonder who i used to be" line gets a lot more read into it than is actually there. she's just saying "you didn't even care, or look at things from my perspective. you didn't even think that maybe you should set me free"

I agree that the tone of Lapis’s statement in that particular context was definitely intended as a “you didn’t even acknowledge there was a person in that mirror” but the specific choice of words, and the context immediately around it- right as Lapis says that, she’s also building an absolutely massive attack, and her very next move is to pin Garnet with a force that sends Amethyst and Pearl flying while shouting her name. That degree of emphasis crosses a line from “I’m a person” to “I am important and you made a grave mistake in making me your enemy.”

And then there’s the fact that this is Lapis we’re talking about.

In a setting where every character’s namesake jewel has often rather in-depth narrative significance for their character, Lapis is named for a gem that has been historically the regalia of gods, and is the origin of a pigment almost as closely tied to royalty as tyrian purple. There’s also the fact that as our Lapis has no trace of white or gold on her design, this suggests that she is the highest possible grade of lapis lazuli- pure blue.

Lapis is incredibly powerful. Pearl explicitly says she had no idea it was even possible for “the Gem in the mirror” to be that strong, and Jasper starts singing a very different tune about Lapis once she realizes how strong Lapis is. A two-gem fusion containing Lapis took a four-gem fusion to fight her.

Inexplicably, Lapis is perfectly able to hold her body together without glitching once, with a heavily damaged gem. Also, unlike Eyeball or Amethyst, we never see Lapis’s crack spreading. What’s a life-threatening situation for Eyeball and Amethyst is basically an inconvenience for Lapis.

And yet… no one knows who Lapis is. Lapis herself seems to prefer it that way to some degree, as her suggestion to Steven in Same Old World is that people only see her when something’s gone wrong, and I’ve personally taken that to mean that Lapis is so important that she’s usually protected by being completely hidden from view. Something about her identity is valuable enough to give her the aristocratic sense of self-importance and hauteur she presents, but also that if people are really seeing and taking note of Lapis, then something has gone wrong, and the cover that’s supposed to protect her isn’t there.

There’s a reason why, while Lapis’s theme isn’t the only one to include her character name, hers is the one that’s a decisive statement of identity: “I Am Lapis Lazuli” stands out compared to, say, “Peridot”.
