People say that when you get the hiccups, it means someone is thinking of you.

Who remembers me in their sleep,
keeps me awake all night?
The beloved keeps me up, the heart keeps me up,
even the lamp keeps me up.

I have the hiccups, I have the hiccups,
I have the hiccups, hic!
I have the hiccups, I have the hiccups,
I have the hiccups.

O my beloved sent me no message,
no letter either.
My eyes have dried in the rain.

The pond is dry, the kikar bush is dry,
inside even I am dry.

I have the hiccups, I have the hiccups,
I have the hiccups.

The sun has come up over the wall, darling,
and all the shade is burned.
How do I cross the courtyard?
The soles of my feet burn.

The pond is dry, the kikar bush is dry,
inside even I am dry.

I have the hiccups, I have the hiccups,
I have the hiccups.

O my life,
when the evening comes,
and the moon rises,
don’t make me cry again.
O my life,
swear on my life,
you won’t come in my memories.

The beloved keeps me up, the heart keeps me up,
even the lamp keeps me up.

The pond is dry, the kikar bush is dry,
inside even I am dry.

I have the hiccups, I have the hiccups,
I have the hiccups, hic!

The pond,
the kikar bush,
inside even I am dry.

i’ve been listening to this song from the upcoming hindi film, mirzya, for three days straight. it’s beautifully composed by shankan eshaan loy, but it’s really the lyrics here by gulzar that i’m losing my mind over. i did a rubbish job trying to translate and capture the essence, but it’s a poor imitation of something really tender
