shanghai lil

This is from the film Footlight Parade (1933).

An example of Busby Berkley’s famous choreography. Who doesn’t love girl kaleidoscopes? This is an immensely silly number called “By a Waterfall,” which precedes “Shanghai Lil.”  The latter is probably a better number, but the depiction of an Asian women by Ruby Keeler is a little off-putting. It’s about as Asian as a grilled cheese sandwich or hockey; however, allowances must be made for the era. Definitely worth watching.

But for sheer silliness, “Waterfall” gets a spot here.

jimmy, i love you so much.
