set in the near future

I really hope that we get to see more of the future on the next season of Legends of Tomorrow.

Season 1 was pretty past-heavy, but we got two episodes set in the near future, a third on Vanishing Point, and some of Rip’s flashbacks along the way.

Season 2 though really didn’t have ANYTHING set in the future.  The closest we got was Charles McNider in the year 3000.  (I guess we survive the Thanagarian invasion without Savage after all, so yay?)

And I mean, I understand that part of the appeal of time travel is going to see famous events and famous people.  But I still feel like we’re missing out a little.  Where are the dystopias?  The Utopias?  The awesome tech?  The post-apocalyptic scenarios (…okay, we did get one of those.)?  The aliens?

Eobard Thawne is from a future we never got to see.  Whatever interaction Rip had with Future Barry was strictly off-camera.  And DC has so many fun future stories!  Legion of Superheroes!  Booster Gold!  Bart Allen and Jenni Ognatz!  The MULTITUDE of Thawne descendents!  (…they might need to fix the whole Eddie problem first, to be fair.)

Time travel is such a fun concept, but so far, we’ve only really been playing with half of it!

“voltron takes place in the near future”

Bitch where??????? Near future is probably like. 2020-2050 imo. We haven’t even gotten to fucking MARS yet and in Voltron canon they were able to get to Kerberos in TWO FUCKING MONTHS.

In retrospect: It took New Horizons TEN FUCKING YEARS to get to Pluto. NH’s speed varied across the journey obviously but averaging the Earth —> Jupiter speed (43,000 mph) with the Jupiter gravity boost (52,000 mph) we’ll say NH’s average speed was 47,500 mph (although this is probably really skewed cause by the time it reached Pluto it slowed to about 30,800 mph). Pluto is on average (not using Aphelion or Perihelion) 40 AU from earth. (abt 3,717,123,597 miles)

This means that, factoring in the distance from Pluto to Kerberos (abt 36,000 miles) it’s 3,717,159,597 miles from Earth to Kerberos. It took a tiny, unmanned probe TEN YEARS to travel that distance. This means that, in Voltron canon, ships are able to travel 61,952,660 miles per DAY (given each month has 30 days, 30*2). In contrast, NH could travel about 1,140,000 mpd. Now from earth to mars let’s say it takes about six months with the current technology and the stuff NASA has planned. Mars is abt 140 million miles from earth. Divide that by 182.5 days (in 6 months) and that’s 127,853.88 miles per day. That’s with a ship with PEOPLE (and supplies, and everything else needed for the journey) on it with MODERN/POSSIBLY FUTURE SHIPS. IN 2016. So….yeah. I crunched some more numbers out of curiosity and it would take the voltron crew about 2 days to get to fucking MARS. MARS THAT TAKES US (give or take a month or two) 6 FUCKING MONTHS TO GET TO. They could get there in 2(.25) days. For us, going 127,853.88 miles per day it would take us SEVENTY NINE YEARS to get to Kerberos. I laughed really fucking hard abt this but GOD. Voltron is DEFINITELY not set in the near future. Because as things are now it would take us 79 fucking years to get to kerberos when it took Shiro and the Holts 2 months. So MY assumption is Voltron takes place probably 80-150 years in the future just because of how fucking SHITTY our space exploration technology is. I know I read WAY to much into this and did way too much fuckin math but I just thought this was interesting.

Why Adventure Time is a Groundbreaking show in Animation

If you are familiar with modern cartoons from this decade, starting from 2010 and currently, chances are you’ve come across a show called “Adventure Time”.

Adventure Time is a show about the adventures of a boy named “Finn” with his dog “Jake” that has magical powers to shape-shift at anytime!

The show takes place in the “Land of Ooo”, which is set in a post-apocalyptic future where humans are near to extinction and Finn is believed to be the last human.

As the show has progressed throughout its 8 seasons, almost near its end with a ninth and final season, we have learned a lot of back-story and history about the origin of Ooo and various characters.

Here is where I think this show was a huge game-changer for Cartoon Network and animated shows, in general!

If we go back to 2007 and on another channel being “Nickelodeon, Adventure Time’s creator, Pendleton Ward created a 7 minute pilot simply titled “Adventure Time” that was just a basic premise of Finn and Jake rescuing Princess Bubblegum from the villainous Ice King.

The pilot then later became viral over the Internet and became a huge success, where Frederator Studios pitched the pilot as a series to Nickelodeon, but they passed on the series twice!

Later on, the studio pitched the series to Cartoon Network and they allowed them to make a whole show, if it meant to keep all of the elements and characters from the pilot.

And then from then on, the show and the creators have expanded upon the pilot and have created a huge and impactful series that have influenced a wide range of creators, academics, gender and orientation!

People have described the show as being trippy, bizarre and silly on the outside, but on the inside, the show can get dark, thoughtful and even makes you question about philosophy, life and the world, in general.

A great example of this show that has led a lot of underground and freelance artists to pursue their own projects is people like Rebecca Sugar for creating Steven Universe, Patrick McHale for creating Over the Garden Wall and Skyler Page for creating Clarence!

It’s not to say that artists were limited to just shows, as well! Many writers were previously independent comic artists including Jesse Moynihan, Seo Kim, Tom Herpich and Steve Wolfhard, just to name a few! Here is an example of Jesse Moynihan’s work called “Forming”!

Lastly, Adventure Time’s impact on gender and orientation comes from how there is a diverse mix of characters! BMO, for example switches genders back and forth depending on certain episodes! There are also some episodes that feature a gender-swapped world of the show which are called “Fionna and Cake” and these episodes tend to be favourites among the fandom!

Characters like Princess Bubblegum, Marceline and Susan Strong are all shown to be tough characters, but deal with their own sets of flaws and insecurities.

Fans of the show often pair PB and Marceline as a ship called “Bubbline”, as it’s believed that they have been in a past relationship and are trying to work out their problems as the show progresses.

There are many various examples of topics that the show that the series represents like loss and memory disorders in “I Remember You”, sexuality and depression in “Breezy” or isolation in “The Music Hole” and that’s just only a few to list.

This episode is considered one of the most saddest in the entire series, thanks to Rebecca Sugar’s amazing song-writing!

What I always admire about the series is that not only has it been consistently strong over the course of 8 seasons, but the show actually has their characters age and grow physically and mentally in real-time.

Season 1 may be considered the most juvenile of the series, whereas the most recent seasons, especially Season 6 and 7 are some of the most poignant and philosophical the show has seen yet and for the better, in my opinion!

Adventure Time has remained and still is widely considered a ground-breaking show in the history of television animation and pushed the boundaries of what could be shown on a kid’s network, similar to Avatar: The Last Airbender did for Nickelodeon, but that’s another topic for another day!

I will miss Adventure Time when it comes to a close, but what will remain is a modern classic in the history of animation and we will always have fun going on adventures with Finn the Human and Jake the Dog!

OVERWATCH PATCH NOTES - APRIL 1, 2017

PATCH HIGHLIGHTS:

New Hero: Jeff (Tank)

As game director and vice president at Blizzard Entertainment, Jeff Kaplan is the leader and creative vision-holder for Overwatch. Kaplan oversees a crack squad of game development operatives tasked with the following mission parameters: design a highly stylized team-based multiplayer shooter set on a near-future earth, featuring a diverse cast of extraordinary characters embroiled in an epic, globe-spanning conflict. And make it awesome.

Jeff is the seventh tank to join the Overwatch lineup, and much like his real life skill, his gameplay is engineered around wrestling. His main weapon are his Fists, which he uses to punch people. Jeff’s movement is slow, and his weapon requires a long wind-up time, but he packs quite the punch! His alternate fire, Suplex, does just as it says. When Jeff is within range, he will grab the hero closest to him and suplex them, resulting in an instant kill.

His Catapult ability grabs the nearest enemy and launches them across the world. Say you are on the first point of Hanamura and you were to use Catapult, the enemy would be thrown to another map, such as Point 2 of Ilios. He can Pin enemies just like Reinhardt, but, he does not pin them to the wall. Instead he pins them to the ground. The enemy will be faced with a quick-time event and will have to struggle to get up. If they cannot get up within 10 seconds, they will be instantly killed. Finally, we have Jeff’s ultimate, Game-Breaking Bug. Upon activating this ultimate, the entire map will disappear and everybody but you will fall to their death.

To learn more about Jeff, click here.

Yuri on Ice BD audio commentary translation - Volume 4

I absolutely wanted to post this within today because this evening I want to work on the Pash interview with Sayo Yamamoto… This BD volume has lots of choreography footage so that will take a while to translate, and I’m going to give priority to the interview.

This commentary is different from the others because it’s not just Kubo with another person, there’s 4 of them. Luckily enough they don’t really talk over each other (except for one part, lol), but in the second half I translated most of what they say as dialogue because I felt it was more fitting. In the dialogue parts my notes/comments are in brackets.

The commentary is only for episode 7. Episode 8 has no commentary. It’s not a full translation but I summarized most of what they said, and some parts are almost completely translated. Fans of Phichit, Guang-Hong and Leo should definitely read it as it’s a rare chance to get comments from these voice actors. Also, their reactions to the last scene are hilarious, that’s a must read too.

The commentary is by:
-Mitsurou Kubo
-Kenshou Ono (Phichit)
-Yuutarou Honjou (Guang-Hong)
-Shunichi Toki (Leo)

Translation under the cut because it’s long. Enjoy!

Writer’s Tip: Avoiding “Authorism” Metaphors and References

Part of POV writing means getting into a specific character’s head. You explore the world from their view, their opinions, their memories. However, one of the simplest things that can rip the reader out of the story is when the author uses a memory, reference or metaphor that they are familiar with, but the charatcer isn’t.

Examples:

Allura held the device in her palms, running her fingers over the rounded buttons and dials. It was roughly the size of an Xbox controller. “This thing will help me travel through time?” She asked.

There is nothing wrong with the paragraph, except for the fact that Allura has most definitely never seen or held an Xbox controller. She has no knowledge of it. Even if one of the paladins had described it to her in conversation before then, it probably wouldn’t be her first go-to for comparison. She would probably reference something fictional from her own culture.

Allura held the device in her palms, running her fingers over the rounded buttons and dials. It reminded her of a Xental, a trendy handheld device from her teenaged years on Altea. “This thing will help me travel through time?” She asked.

While the audience may not know what this fictional item is, they can infer its looks and purpose from Allura’s opinions and memories of it. Or, you could simply skip the comparison altogether and go with describing the object as-is.

“You guys are acting ridiculous,” said Pidge. “You remind me of an episode of Hey Arnold.”

Again, not entirely wrong, but this statement dates the author, and misrepresents the character. First of all, Voltron the show is set in the near future of earth, so media references probably haven’t been seen yet and would need to be invented.

However, if we’re going with contemporary references or a modern AU, Pidge, assuming she is around 14-15 years old, is too young to have watched a show that aired from 1996-2004. It shows that the author is familiar with this reference, but it’s inappropriate for the character.

Keith watched the robot shift back and forth on its six feet as it readied itself to attack. It was a graceful action, hypnotic and smooth. It reminded him of a waltz.

This one is a little trickier and it requires the author to really consider what Keith’s backstory is and what his go-to references are. Does Keith know what waltzing is? Yeah, generally, probably about as much as the average person. Has Keith ever watched waltz dancing? Maybe on TV at some point.

But the question is, would he use it as a prime reference?

And, in my opinion, probably not. Waltzing is not in Keith’s mind because of Keith’s lifestyle and choices. The reference comes across as authorly because it deposits information that is not natural to the character onto him and endows him with information and experience that is either unnecessary or inappropriate.

A better mental reference would be to link it to Keith’s extensive fighting experience.

Keith watched the robot shift back and forth on its six feet as it readied itself to attack. It was a graceful action, hypnotic and smooth. It reminded him of his capoera classes at the garrison.

This helps to build and solidify Keith’s character, rather than distract from it. It takes Keith’s known attributes, that of a fighter, and gives him a bit more logical backstory. He’s referencing a direct experience he’s already had, rather than an abstract one like waltzing. This is the difference between deepening the story and pulling the reader out of it.

It’s true to “write what you know” but you also need to balance that with what the character you are writing explicitly or implicitly knows or doesn’t know. When you write POV, you are writing from that character’s experiences and memories and references. Keep that in mind when you use metaphors and similies and keep them in line with the character.

Otherwise your readers will be able to peek behind the curtain and see the author there.

Writer’s Tip #2: Placing your characters in a scene with Google Images

Major Lazer & Camila Cabello Have Made 'Over 20 Songs' Together: Exclusive

Major Lazer are dishing some major details about their studio time with Camila Cabello.

In an exclusive interview with Billboard Dance on Tuesday, the dance supergroup divulged more about their forthcoming collaborations with the former Fifth Harmony member. The trio’s founder Diplo has teased their studio time together multiple times on Snapchat, the latest being back in January alongside Benny Blanco and Cashmere Cat.

And it seems the year-long stream of social media snippets resulted in a lot of unreleased material between them.

“We made like 20 songs with Camila Cabello,” Diplo says. “We love her.”

The Grammy winner also reflected on the time Walshy Fire took the “Bad Things” singer to one of her first club nights back in their hometown of Miami. “I do a party every Tuesday in Miami called ‘Rum N’ Bass’ at Coyo Taco, and she came through and nobody cared,” says Walshy. “And she turned way up. And it was dope, loud trap music.”

Diplo confirmed that there is a particular track in mind, set for release in the near future, but that “until we have the video and the song is on iTunes, you never know.” He adds, “But of course we have stuff with her. She’s done stuff with a lot of our friends, like Cashmere Cat, Benny Blanco, Frank Dukes – a lot of great producers we work with.”

There’s a good reason Camila has developed a close working relationship with the powerhouse trio: In the midst of her skyrocketing fame, she feels grounded when she’s with them. “Sometimes we just take for granted because we’re old, we’re not even famous,“ Diplo says. "When you’re young and you’re that amazing and famous like that, it’s hard to live and be normal. When we’re with her, she enjoys that time because we take her places where she can enjoy herself. We love her, her voice is amazing. We’ve done many demos.”

The Handmaid’s Tale: marketing, then and now

Comparing the Hulu adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale to the 1990 version is… weird, because the old one seems to have been made with a “haha, this could never happen; let’s play it like a fun adventure thriller and sell it as sexy as possible!” kind of attitude. I mean, the trailer has this bouncy narration that starts with “once upon a time…” and turns the dystopian element into more of a soap opera.

And just take a look at the promotional art:

(…I don’t think that was the message of the book, guys. Sure, Offred was longing for human touch, or pretty much any kind of human connection, but I think that the book was more about women being reduced to wombs with legs, not state-owned prostitutes… It was about the desperation of needing to give birth or face punishment. Everything about this dystopia was hyper-de-sexualized.)

Oh, and my favorite:

“A psychosexual movie shocker.” With what looks like half the cover of a cheesy romance novel, minus some buff shirtless guy.

(I also think it’s kind of funny that they say “once upon a time in the near future” sex became used for control and domination, as if rape and prostitution haven’t existed for centuries… but okay…)

I’ll admit I haven’t seen this version (or the Hulu one, for that matter), but I do appreciate that they cast a properly old and creepy man in the part of the Commander, and a properly aged woman for his Wife. The Hulu casting is a little youthful, if you ask me; the book characters felt very weathered, and I think it mentioned that they were supposed to be quite a bit older than Offred. Her “affair” with the Commander is supposed to feel very weird and unsettling, partially because he’s this old man who wants someone to play Scrabble with and dress up in sequins.

Anyway, then we had what I call the “holy shit these dystopias are too real” phase, culminating with the new Hulu adaptation of this particular dystopia, which is waaaay too relevant to today’s issues.

See? This is how you depict the feeling of objectification. Not with a topless woman bathed in flattering lighting – by objectifying a woman yourself, you’re not sending a message so much as continuing the trend. Especially when you sell your film as some kind of sexy romance. “Branded, sold, controlled: she belongs to The State” doesn’t quite cut it; this very simple, very clear message does. Offred is no longer human, she doesn’t have a face; she is just an object. Objectified.

(This also has some fantastic layering because it recalls the messages that you might find scrawled across the bathroom mirror meant to demean other girls; part of Gilead’s system involves pitting women against each other: Wives against Handmaids, Handmaids against Aunts, even Handmaids against each other out of jealousy and in the Red Center with their slut-shaming. To stay in power, the men at the top make sure that the women below them are too occupied with resenting each other that they forget to look up at who the real enemy is.)

*holy FUCK*

Now THAT is how you market a dystopia. This story is not some scandalous fantasy set in the near-but-distant future; it’s a warning, of what might be lurking just around the corner. The Handmaid’s Tale is an incredibly frightening book to read today, because of the things that are being allowed to happen in our society. It shows what happens when we let sexism flourish, when ecological and political crises make us paranoid enough about national security that we let the people in power take away our rights. It is a fucking nightmare.

Bellarke and the Walkie

Set in the vague near future. Clarke is facing becoming Mt Weather to save all of humanity and she is close to breaking.

Clarke wanted her mom.

It was a base instinct, and one she could not appease. Raven was sleeping. Her mom was sleeping. Jackson watched over them both, because if they kept working the way they were they’d both die, because Clarke had fried both of their brains to keep them from ALIE and god dammit. What was the point? What was the point in any of it?

They were all going to die anyway.

Clarke did not know when she started crying. Once she did, she did not know if she would stop. She could hardly breathe for the tightness in her chest. Gulping for breath, the tears slid down her cheeks and her chin until her nose was running. She wanted to scream, but somebody would hear. Maybe her mom would and she’d insist on coming down here, and then she’d die faster because her kid couldn’t hold it together.

But Clarke didn’t want to hold it together anymore. She’d had enough of holding it together. She wanted to rest. She wanted to stop.

She wanted…

Through tears, her gaze settled on the walkie. Trembling fingers reached towards it, brought it to her lips.

‘Hello…’

Her voice a cracked whisper, Clarke cleared her throat.

‘Hello.’

Static, and then, ‘Clarke?’

Kane. He probably slept with the walkie beside him in case Abby called.

‘Clarke? Is everything okay?’

‘Can I speak to Bellamy, please?’

Maybe he heard her voice break. Maybe he understood that her asking so blatantly, without preamble, meant she was desperate. Or maybe he was tired too, too tired to ask questions.

‘Hold on,’ he said.

Clarke squeezed her eyes shut, pressing the walkie to her temple. Her breathing came a little easier, but the tears still flowed.

She did not know how long she waited, though she knew she would have sat there all night if she had too.

A breath first, shaking.

‘Clarke?’

It burst out of her, without thought. She clutched at the walkie with both hands, curling around it as if she could pull him close.

‘What were you going to say?’

‘Clarke,’ his voice stronger now, ‘what’s happened? Are you okay?’

‘No,’ she choked, ‘no, I’m not. It’s impossible, Bell. What we’re doing…it’s impossible. I wanted…I wanted to believe that we could find a way, but this is it. It’s the end of the…’

‘Clarke…’

‘And I stopped you from saying it because I wanted to believe that we’d have time. Time to heal, time to make sure that we were ready, and that it was right. Because I need you, and I don’t need you like I needed you after Dax. I need you in…every way. But we don’t have time, and I don’t even know if I…god, if I will see you again. So I want to know what you were going to say.’

She stopped abruptly, drawing in a ragged breath.

Silence.

Silence.

Clarke slumped over the desk, dropping the walkie before her and holding her head in her hands. She’d ruined it. Broken it.

His breathing again, rushed, trembling.

‘Clarke…’

Clarke curled her arms around the walkie, laying her head down beside it.

‘I…I don’t know what I was going to say. I just knew that I wanted to say something. Something to make you understand…how important, how special, you are to me. But I…I don’t think there are words for it. I don’t think you can ever understand. So I guess…I guess I wanted you to know that…’

He couldn’t say it, whatever it was.

Clarke picked up the walkie, swallowing thickly. She wiped her eyes, licked her lips.

‘Bellamy?’

‘Yeah?’

‘I need you to know that I love you.’

The softest of sighs.

‘Clarke, I think you already know that I love you too.’

how to stay motivated

hey guys so recently I have had quite a few messages asking me how to stay motivated so I thought I would put it in one post so that people can see how I like to stay motivated and hopefully these tips help you too!

TIP #1 SET A GOAL

I feel like setting a goal is super important and this is my main source of motivation. I set little mini short-term goals and the odd long-term goal so I am surrounded by aims to get me motivated.

So what is a short-term goal? A short-term goal is a goal that you want to set for the near future. The near future could be an hour, a day, a week, a month - but something that you can accomplish in a ‘small’ amount of time. Examples could include:

  • Getting up at 7am every morning and starting your work early
  • Reading a chapter of a book a day to improve your reading
  • No chocolate for a month
  • No studying past 6pm
  • Keep a clean desk

A long-term goal is something that you want to reach but takes a lot longer to achieve. Long-term goals can include:

  • Going to university to study Law
  • Getting straight B’s in next years final exams
  • Landing a career in journalism
  • Gaining/losing X amount of lbs
  • Saving £X so you can go on holiday

I find setting a long-term goal can be helpful, but short-term goals are just as good. I have a long term goal at the moment to work hard and get good grades so I can go to university and study history. Whilst this is a good goal, I also need stepping stones to get me there and to keep that motivation flowing - these are my short-term goals: such as getting more organised for my final year, or getting an A on an essay I’ve written.

Sometimes people don’t know what to do when they have to set a goal, but think slightly selfish for a bit and think about what you really want and how to get there. This sets up some motivation. I love having a goal because I feel like every small task I complete gets me one step closer to that goal of mine - almost like ticking an assignment off of your to-do list!

TIP #2 SCHEDULES AND TO-DO LISTS

Speaking of to-do lists, this brings me on to tip number two. I don’t know where I would be without a to-do list/schedule because without it, I would be an absolute mess. With having so much to do, it is impossible for me to keep a mental list of everything and writing it down helps so much!

Not only does it help me remember what I have to do, it also motivates me in so many ways. First of all, setting one up at the start of the day means that I know exactly what I need to get done and I want to get it done as quickly as I can, but without rushing it and so it makes me start straight away so I can tick things off of my list.

This brings me on to the second reason why they motivate me so much - because every time you tick it off, you get an amazing feeling of satisfaction and relief that your to-do list is slowly getting smaller. Also, the amount of happiness it brings when you have ticked off everything you have to do is definitely such a good feeling and it is so amazing to know you have finished and you can now relax! Each time you tick something off, it motivates you to get the whole list done.

Schedules work in the same way, as you go through the day, there are less and less things for you to do and it makes you feel gradually more satisfied that you’re coming to the end of your work!

Pro tip: however, it is important to be realistic, if you set a to-do list with 15 things on it, it looks less appealing and you are less likely to do it. go for realistic lists that are long enough to keep you busy but small enough to manage!

TIP #3 BREAKING DOWN BIG TASKS INTO SMALLER ONES

This is actually quite simple and original but also helps massively and perhaps one of the most amazing things ever. If I have a massive chunk of homework for a subject, breaking it down into smaller tasks makes my life so much easier and saves me so much agro.

Of course it isn’t always possible to break it down if your deadline is two days after it is set - but you can always break it down into two halves which makes tackling it seem a lot easier.

I know some of my friends really don’t like doing this because they would rather just get it done and out the way, but if you are someone like me where motivation needs to hit me like a truck before I get work done, this can be a really good way to tackle projects and homework and isn’t as stressful. Whilst it might take slightly longer due to the breaking up of tasks, I actually find this more productive and makes things so much more manageable so I actually feel like I want to do the small task instead of the one large one.

I break up the tasks and schedule these broken up tasks on my to-do list. For example, instead of reading a whole chapter and taking notes from my history books, I will just write ‘take notes from page X to page Y’ and it completely changes my frame of mind and makes me more positive.

TIP #4 DO THE TOUGHEST TASK FIRST

You probably must be thinking something like, ‘Jess you must be mad! why on earth would you do the hardest task first thats just the worst idea ever?!’ but honestly, this is something that can really change your mood and uplift you for the rest of the day - honestly, this tip works!

I completely understand that in a morning the first thing you are not going to want to do is that physics homework that entails you doing 3 pages of questions on oscillations and harmonic motion. However, doing the hardest task / things you don’t want to do first, not only makes you tackle it with a fresh mind after waking up (or after a break from school or whatever it is you were doing), but also afterwards, you feel more confident and motivated to get the rest of the things done which are more enjoyable and is actually more motivating because you have got the worst thing out of the way.

You also don’t want to not do it and then set it for another day, when you are probably going to procrastinate getting it done. Get it out of the way!

We all know that leaving an assignment you really don’t want to do until last is perhaps the worst thing you can do, as you take one look at it and decide you have had enough and need a break or some sleep. Prioritising this first means that you can get everything done without leaving the thing you didn’t want to do.

TIP #5 YOUR SUCCESSES ARE IMPORTANT, BUT THINK ABOUT YOUR FAILURES TOO!

This one is a great one to bare in mind and this really applies to me at the moment and is actually where my main source of motivation has come from since the 18th August (results day!).

For me, getting great results is a massive success, and receiving results such as A’s and B’s makes me very very happy and much more motivated. It gives me a spark of inspiration to keep going to make sure that I keep that up! Whilst I know grades aren’t everything, they are really important to me and so this is why when I get very good results, they motivate me to keep me going to achieve more - and it ends up in a cycle!

However, whilst good grades motivate me to carry on performing at my best and to keep working hard, it is important that I understand my failures too, and so should you. A failure for me isn’t a specific grade as such, but where I am disappointed at myself for getting something or knowing I didn’t perform as well as I should have, or an unexpected failure as I thought I had done better than I did.

From these failures/mistakes, these also motivate me to do better next time, or to focus on improving myself and my technique to be the best I can be. Failures/mistakes can make you more motivated than what your successes can, because it motivates you to find areas of improvement and work hard and improve techniques so that you can get to where you want to be - you can get to that goal!

Successes and failures are so important in receiving motivation. Not only do they provide you with something to keep you going, but they build you as a character and I think that is a lovely thing!

TIP #6 MAKE USE OF YOUR CREATIVITY

I find that since joining the studyblr community, I have found really nice ways to be creative and to make my notes look neater and more appealing for me to look at. This might seem to be such a silly little tip, but drawing simple doodles or fancy titles really motivates me.

Whilst making my notes look more aesthetically pleasing takes slightly longer, I find it calms me with anxiety as I am being creative whilst I am working and it is a really great way for me to stay relaxed. So not only does it bring me motivation, but calms my anxiety too! Killing two birds with one stone!

This point doesn’t really apply when I am revising, a fancy title will probably do; and also when I am taking notes in class, I never bother; but when I am going over things or making flashcards, it helps to make things look more appealing so I am more likely to pick them up and go for them and learn.

Some might disagree that this would actually make them less inclined to do work, but if you need to alleviate stress, get motivated or just want to make your notes look nice, then this could be for you!

TIP #7 BREAKS AND REWARDS!!

Breaks and rewards give you so much motivation whilst you are doing your work! I study and revise probably more than what is healthy, and so I like to make sure I have a nice break whenever I can because I work myself very hard. Sometimes, something can take me about 2 hours and so a half an hour to an hour’s worth of break can really help me before I start something else.

You can try having a break every 45 minutes, every hour or two hours; but make sure your break really puts your mind at ease before you start work again. You need to make sure you give your brain a good rest.

You can have a break or reward yourself by having a nice shower, going for a walk or to the gym, cooking, having a coffee and a biscuit, meeting up with some friends, going on social media, having a nap - whatever it might be, as long as you have that break you will feel so much more refreshed after! It also motivates you to get things done so you know you can have a break after you have finished your task and makes you feel compelled to finish it so you can relax!

TIP #8 GET HELP ALONG THE WAY

This is actually a really important point and can help maintain motivation in the long run. Getting people to help you can be a really good way to stay motivated. Tell people, such as your friends and family, about the goals you have set for yourself or that you are struggling to stay motivated and ask them to help you.

My friends sometimes study with me and help me with things I don’t understand which can help maintain my motivation. When I finally understand something or I go over things with my friends, it can make me feel more confident and uplifted that I know things and spurs me on. Letting family know about your goals also helps them support you which is a really significant part of motivation, because if no one is there to support you, the will to carry on eventually disintegrates and you don’t want that!

Make sure that you do have some support, whether it be from friends, family or the studyblr community, but ensure you are surrounded by people who can motivate you and who can help you along the way so that you can achieve these goals and keep you on target! Sometimes, motivation doesn’t come from the things you do, but from the environment that you’re in - which is why support and help is such a good source of motivation!

That is the end of the tips I have on how to stay motivated. Hopefully they are good starting points for you all! Let me know if you try any of these tips for a while and tell me if they have helped you, it is always nice to see what people think and if these things work - remember if they don’t, that everyone is different and different things work for different people!
