set a course

Keep Flogging On This...

@hikerlady asked me to give my latest theory (which may well change by tomorrow) and who needs sleep!?  Sure, let me type!

When did Lucien send the affidavit?  Hiker has checked his ties (no, we’re not obsessed or anything) in the last couple of episodes and can’t find a definite spot where he could have been dropping it off.  But he doesn’t appear to be suffering from his stabbing, so it could well be before the attack, and thus his moment of ‘confession’ in his hospital bed is that turning moment.  He could have told then, but once he didn’t, he was set on his course.

This was a man who worked as a spy.  He’s given a mission, and the fewer people who know, the better.

Well, that and the old husband axiom, better to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission.

But what of Jean?  Our smart, intuitive Jean, who can diagnose pregnancy with a glance, is missing the blaring alarms going off?  She, the person who knows Lucien best on this earth?

Because the last time she called her man on the very center of his being, he ended up dead.  And just to remind her, her God almost kills Lucien.  When she begs him to not  make any unilateral decisions and keep her in the process, she’s thinking of Christopher Sr just walking out and signing up for active service without another word.  While Lucien desperately needs to sacrifice himself to save the woman he loves.  Jean’s not going to end up in a figurative prison of shame, dammit.  Both of our Beloveds are suffering from the tragic error of fighting the last war.

How will they get out of this!!??

Updated tutorial? My advise is – use references! All those hands were drawn from the references, photos and life. There’s also loads of useful tutorials on drawing hands that explain how hands work. It’s your job to understand the anatomy and find a way of constructing hands that’s easy for you. And thank you! :)

When I started Stargate, I got the part, I was sooothrilled to have this incredible character, to be playing someone in the military and I had so much respect, to be playing someone who’s so smart and so liberated and… I thought, “Yes!”

I had two weeks to move from Toronto to Vancouver. I flew out there, I had my first wardrobe fitting. And one of the things that was in… the thing that was in the wardrobe room was a very low-cut tank top and a push-up bra…

And I turned to the costume designer - whom I’ve worked with since, who’s wonderful - and I said, “What… What is this?”
And she said “Well, they wanna see what you look like in it.”
And I said, “…but this… nobody in the military, no captain in the US airforce would wear this… while her male counterparts are wearing crew neck T-shirts and… I c… I… I can’t do it!”
And she said, “Well, they just wanna see what you look like and take a picture and…”

I was like “…”

And I panicked because I thought I have just been given this amazing opportunity - I didn’t know it would last 10 years but I knew it was gonna be a kick-ass show - and I was like… “I can’t do it…”

And I started to cry and I said, “You have to go upstairs and tell them I’m not doing it. And if it means that they recast the part then recast the part but you’ve cast a smart woman and you’ve cast somebody who’s never tried to get a job based on her looks or her body. I’ve always played strong, smart women, I… I can’t do it. So if they wanna recast the part I totally get it but I’m not playing that version of this character.”

But I’m saying this while I’m blubbering because I’m suffering that I’ve just lost maybe the best job of my career…

And so she said, “Okay” and I said, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’ve never been difficult, I don’t… but I can’t do that!”

So she went upstairs and she came back down and she said, “Okay, no problem.”
And I said, “Okay, so what’s my costume?”
And she said, “Well…”
And I said, “Just… What are the guys wearing?”

So she handed me a black T-Shirt and the BDUs, which is what my character would wear in the field with her male counterparts, and that’s where we went from there.

But that to me was the defining moment of…

And I still cry about it because I still remember that young woman on the verge of breaking into the… new something big, being petrified that she was gonna loose it, but… I knew that I couldn’t play the TNA version of Sam Carter.

And to the powers-that-be, great credit, I don’t think that it was Brad or Jonathan or Rob or any of those guys who were asking for it, I think it might have been, you know, much higher up.
But to their great credit they were like, “No, absolutely not. She’s… okay, whatever she’s comfortable in.”

And… thank God that they went that route.
But that was… that was one of the defining moments.

Voltron Terminology: Season Three

A list of places, objects, phrases, and new characters introduced in Season Three. All spelling is from the subtitles. Might be missing one or two. Good luck, content creators!

Places

Puigsaved by Lance and Hunk in s3ep1, attacked again later by the Galra General Ladies. Call themselves the Puigians.
Ulippa System – Throk is transferred out here. The planet/system has ice worms.
Va’Kar quadrant – the Paladins set a course to this place during their search for Lotor and the comet.
Planet Kythra – a tribal desert people, featuring the same large feathered ears as the aliens who rescued Matt. Pronounced “keeth-ra”.
Tando people – live in the Valurian quadrant, and wear flappy loose pants.
Paglium quadrant – the yellow and blue lions were spotted here between season two and three.
Planet Thayserix – planet made of dense gases with unusual magnetic poles that cancel the sensors. Atmosphere has areas full of Red Syntian Nitrate, which is a highly combustible gas that goes BOOM when you shoot through it with “amplified emissions of light.” (In summary: lasers bad. Ice guns okay.)
Daibazaal - original home of the Galra. The comet that Voltron was made from crashed here.
Rygnirath - home of the original Yellow Paladin, Gyrgan
the Dalterion Belt - home of the original Green Paladin, Trigel
Nalquod - home of the original Blue Paladin, Blaytz

Terms and Objects

Red Syntian Nitrate – a highly combustible gas found in parts of Thayserix’s atmosphere. See above.
Skort pantaloons – flappy loose pants traditionally worn by the Tando people.
Bogwaggle-cape – can be trained to sing theme songs. Coran had one back in the day.
Nanothermite titanium-boron – the bomb that broke Matt out of galra prison

Non-cogs – a term used by trans-reality Alteans that refers to people controlled by the hokril.
Hokril – a device that plugs directly into one’s brain via the back of the skull. This device saps the fighting force from a person – from “enemies”. Used by the trans-reality Alteans to bring “peace”.
Klygarg – a computer or database of some sort. Transmissions can be logged on this device, which needs a password to activate.

Note: the comet that Voltron was made from, as well as Lotor’s new battle-ship, is never specified by name. The ship (and Voltron) are said to be made from the “ore” produced by the comet – but the comet itself currently has no specified name.

Phrases

By King Groggery the Infirm! – used by Coran as an exclamation. Fun fact: King Groggery the Infirm is also on the Altean currency that Coran tries to bribe the mall-directory!Unilu with in Space Mall (Season 2.7).
By the ancients – another one of Coran’s exclamations.
Hold your gazurgas, everyone! – thank you, Coran.
And I’m the Phoblan of Gargalax – Shiro’s taller captor uses this as a sarcastic statement of disbelief, similar to “sure, and I’m the King of France.”

Lotor’s Generals
Ezor – awesome. ‘ribbon-hair’ Galra

Vakala – tiny alien on the ice planet fake!Shiro/Kuron lands on. Their companion, the larger alien, is not named.
Subject Y0XT39 – approved for use in Operation Kuron.
Note: Shiro’s fugitive number is 117-9875. (Season 1.10)
General Raht – assigned by Haggar to keep an eye on Prince Lotor.
Honerva – Haggar’s original name

Behind the Scenes of The Runaway Bride (Part Eight)

Excerpt from Benjamin Cook’s “Bad Reception” article in DWM #378

This, ladies and gentlemen, is Donna Noble’s reception. The room is adorned with decorations, party balloons, and a banner that says, somewhat prematurely, ‘Congratulations Donna & Lance’, but wedding presents, streamers, and sausage rolls lie strewn across the dancefloor, tables and chairs are overturned, the air is thick with smoke, and four artificial Christmas trees (watch out - they’re swines) are standing about, all menacing-like. Over there in the corner, chatting to a pageboy, is Donna herself, actress, comedienne, and famous lady Catherine Tate. In a wedding dress.

“How do you manage to run in that dress?” asks the pageboy.

“I know, it’s a bit tricky,” she answers. “Do you want to know a secret?” She hoists up her dress, but lowers her voice, “See, I’m wearing trainers!”

“Nice trainers,” nods David Tennant, the Doctor. “You should wear ‘em in wide shots!”

“Here we go, then,” calls out Peter Bennett, the first assistant director, “for a take. Nice and quiet, please. And turn over…”

Donna and Lance, her would-have-been fiance, climb out of hiding from behind a table. “You all right, sweetheart?” she asks, stepping over the wreckage of her wedding reception. “Michael? Connie? Sunita, do something useful -”

“Who’s Sunita?” asks Euros [Lyn, director].

“I’m making it this lady here,” replies Catherine, stroking the arm of a supporting artiste wearing an absurdly large hat.

“I thought Sunita sounded more like a bridesmaid’s name,” says the lady in the hat. […]

“I want this to happen at my wedding,” jokes Don Gilet, who plays Lance.

“That can be arranged,” says Any Effects’ Mike Crowley, the special effects supervisor.

Wanna take over my wife's job after her maternity leave? get yourself pushed out of the company instead.

LTL, FTP. I have almost no direct involvement in this tale. I’m writing it on behalf of my wife.

Sorry for the wall of text… TL;DR at the bottom. This story happened (ended) two weeks ago.

Background:

We live in a country that needs a lot of improvement on laws, their application and enforcement…. we are a lot better than a few years back, but still sometimes people can get away with forging some types of documents, like medical records, education degrees etc. Also, english is not our main language, so job titles, degrees and other details are translated to their best equivalence.

According to our country’s labor laws:

  • All female employees are entitled to 3 months paid maternity leave.
  • Employers, at their own expense, are expected to cover for the employees on maternity leave, usually with temp workers.
  • Severance payments are mandatory when firing employees (without justified cause… crime, fraud, etc) with more than 3 months on their jobs, so that’s the time limit to be considered a temp employee.
  • Severance payment calculation is rather complicated, but for firing people employed 4 years or less, it usually boils down to about 4 months of salary.
  • To fire Pregnant women, employers have to pay them 6 months of salary on top of the severance payment they’re entitled to.
  • If an employee quits voluntarily, they effectively forfeit all benefits previously mentioned.

5 Things that Keep us Stuck in Life

1. Believing negative, unproductive and self-defeating thoughts. These include thoughts like “I could never … I’m not good enough to … I don’t deserve to … I’m useless at …”

2. Blaming others. It’s true that other people can have a huge affect on what happens to us, and where we are in life. But we give them too much power if we let them set our course, and see ourselves as victims, and act like we’ve no power.

3. Taking ourselves too seriously. It’s important to work hard and to have integrity – but we also have to laugh and enjoy ourselves as well. Also, decide to let things go, and put up with some mistakes. You’re not a perfect person and, the truth is - that’s OK!

4. Being afraid to take some risks or to live close to the edge. To have an interesting life you must leave your comfort zone and say “yes” to some new chances and opportunities. It will broaden your perspective, reduce anxiety, and provide you with new options and possibilities.

5. Being afraid of change. It doesn’t take much effort to stick with what you know. The unknown can seem daunting as we don’t know where that leads! But we grow as individuals and lead a richer life if we learn to accept changes, instead of being scared.
