Yuri on Ice Fic Recs, #2
The first round was so much fun, I’m going to do it again. Here’s another 8 fics that I thoroughly recommend for reading.
All titles include links to the fic (in case your broswer doesn’t show that handy under-line).
Not Quite Fluff, Not Quite Angst:
leave-taking by winchilsea
Moving to St. Petersburg was Yuuri’s idea. Viktor wanted to stay in Hasetsu.
My comment: Victor’s POV of the conversation about moving to St. Petersburg. It’s vaguely more angst than not, since Victor doesn’t want to go, but it’s still a sweet look at the two of them, and the author packs so many atmospheric details in just over a thousand words that you completely understand Victor’s reluctance to leave. Beautiful.
falling through the ice by lagaudiere
Home. Home is Viktor’s sparse St. Petersburg apartment, which is now where Yuri keeps his clothes and his toothbrush and his silver medal, which Viktor hung above the fireplace, and his extensive collection of Viktor Nikiforov posters, because Minako had mailed every one of them from Hatsetsu. (Yuri had shoved them into a drawer, but Viktor put some of his favorites on the fridge, next to the photos he’d had printed of Yuri in his juniors costumes.)
Home, where every time Viktor sees Yuri chattering excitedly to the triplets over Skype or hears Mari complain over the phone about the time difference, he feels guilty for keeping Yuri to himself, as if he’s the one stealing Yuri from the world now.
“What will Viktor Nikiforov’s fans say if he falls like that in competition?” Viktor sighs, not moving. “What will his protégée and rival Yuri Katsuki say?”
Lovely, with a slight bit more angst than fluff, but the ending is so sweet
it’s worth it. Victor’s worries about returning to competitive life (and his
own personal life with Yuuri) are what I have to think he’d have on his mind in
the second season.
i took no time with the fall by lazulisong
It’s really nice, knowing Victor like this, as a real living person who hates chocolate and sleeps with his dog in his arms like a teddy bear. That he’s obsessed with the perfect selfie and remembers that Yuri doesn’t like carrots. All of those things about Victor, that Yuri gets to find out every day, over and over again.
My comment: The angst stems from the UST in this short fic that is more about Victor falling for Yuuri from Yuuri’s POV – mostly it’s just the delight of meeting someone new and getting to know them, knowing that they’re going to be immensely important to your life. If you like the subtlety of the show, you’re gonna love this.
some things require leaving by idrilka
It still amazes Victor, how much one person can feel like home.
(Or: On leaving and returning.)
My comment: idrilka wrote one of my favorite Check Please fics, so I was thrilled to find out they’re writing YOI too – and this story does not disappoint. It even has two sequels, both of which are much hotter (read: smuttier) than the first, which has gorgeous inner dialogue. All three are beautifully written.
Porn, plot optional (please assume at least a Mature rating on these fics):
Touch and Go by Ashida
Victor couldn’t figure out whether Yuuri Katsuki was utterly dense, truly not interested, or if he was in fact the biggest tease to ever skate the ice.
My comment: Victor’s POV, hot as blazes. Ashida may have just become my favorite porn writer; this hit the perfect notes of frustration and UST that ends in explosive and really, really well-written sex. (Honestly, just go read everything they’ve written, it’s all gonna show up on a rec list eventually.)
you’re like heaven to touch by lazulisong
“Is this because I let you watch American movies as a child,” says Yakov flatly. “The ones where the popular boy gives his coat to the pretty girl?”
Victor puts up both eyebrows in a delicately mocking gesture that was unbearable when he was a fey creature of sixteen and makes Yakov yearn to clip him around the ears now, when he’s twenty-eight. “‘Let’ me?” he says.
My comment: In which we discover that Yuuri is much quicker to figure out (and act upon) Victor’s kinks than Victor actually is. Also, horrified Yurio, which is always a pleasant bonus to any fic involving kissing. (That might be the mom in me talking, though. What’s the point of having kids if you can’t horrify them once in a while?)
Praise Please by surveycorpsjean
Viktor is a good coach. Strict, talented.
But Viktor is kind. He gives praise like a waterfall, overflowing and loud and it makes Yuuri drown.
My comment: Okay, so I’m pretty sure Yuuri isn’t the only one drowning here; I kept drowning in the prose in this fic and forgetting to breathe. Just… lush. And then there’s the sex. Even more lush. Can one say “yum” about sex? If so, yum.
The WIP I’m watching (and you should too)
Winter Song by proantagonist
The set of Yuuri’s mouth softened into a private smile as Victor squeezed his knee beneath the table. His hands were bare, free from the gloves he so often wore when they were together on the rink, and the heat of his palm burned straight through the denim of Yuuri’s jeans. He slipped his own hand beneath the table and found Victor’s. Hidden from sight, their fingers began to flirt and play. A secret conversation all their own that needed no words.
Yuuri was aware that at some point—a moment in time he couldn’t quite place—Victor had become his boyfriend.
There wasn’t a single instant when it happened. It was a slow awareness, as if Victor had silently been asking the question for months now, and Yuuri had been giving him the answer a little more with each passing day.
My comment: Everything that happens off screen during the show. I swear this is so on point, I’m nearly convinced that proantagonist is one of the show creators. SO FLIPPIN GOOD, OMG. The writing is utterly captivating, the characterizations are perfect, and the sex is fantastic, too, guh.
