Williams recently teamed up with Dude Perfect to show off her mad abilities. She’s able to hit a hanging water balloon and a canister sitting on one of the guys’ heads, all with bull’s-eye precision. Eventually she tries out a huge new racket that doesn’t look Wimbledon-approved but is definitely fan-approved.
Serena Williams, an athlete, a tennis athlete, is in this video.
Tennis is one of the most stuck up sports on the planet, typically meant for the wealthy and rich.
And the white.
And here’s Serena Williams, who’s had so many racial slurs hurled at her, who’s been called unfeminine because she has the nerve to be muscular and black, who has the daring nerve to not let all these white folks around her forget that she came from Compton, who was demonized for daring to show her legs on a magazine cover as if it’s never been done before.
Here Serena is, showing off her legs, twerking, showing off her sexiness, being completely unashamed of her blackness. (Not that she ever has been.) And the whole world is seeing this as Beyonce sings.
Serena’s appearance is more than just another black girl in a black video. It’s flaunting blackness in a world that wants you to be anything but black. I read it as a form of rebellion.
