Okay so I’m still sick, but I’m at that stage where I’m floating in and out of conscious thought and suddenly really talkative despite seldom making any sort of sense
WHILE I’M ON THIS KICK
LET’S TALK SPIT AND CURSE A LOT ABOUT THE SEPTIZODIUM
What’s the Septizodium?? Fuck if I know! In fact, fuck if anyone knows! Well, we know it was built in early 200 AD by emperor Severus, and we know it was a fuckin crumbly mess of shit by 700s, and we know Renaissance artists really liked drawing that fragment of it because like shit there’s so many of these man. We’re not sure what the name’s supposed to be about though. Like it might be a reference to the planetary pantheon, or it could be that the building was split into seven segments, or some people even think it might’ve been seven stories tall. Which is like? I mean look at that thing up there. That’s bamf as shit, but I’m not sure if that’s practical enough for RRROMAN standards. It’s more likely to be that oscillating three story structure there.
We don’t even know what it was used for? It was a facade for something, but there’s a lot of back and forth about what exactly it was. Evidently there was evidence of a water basin found in the remains, which means it might’ve served as some sort of facade to a fountain? Which like, makes sense? Because Ammianus mentioned it as a “popular place”, while also calling it a Nymphaeum in the same sentence (and also ostentatious, wow ooooh burn). Which I mean…is possible. But most Roman nymphaeums were smaller rotundas. I’ve never actually heard of a Roman nymphaeum that was a facade structure, or certianly not one this big.
Uhhhh boy I hope that made any sort of sense. I keep sneezing my brains out where am I where did these pictures come from.
