On January 24, 2017, 19-year old Pearl Moen was senctenced to 15 years in prison for attacking and nearly killing a complete stranger in November of 2015. Then only 17 years old, Moen tried to kill a 23-year old woman who was sitting on the sidewalk outside of an apartment complex in Austin, Texas. Moen stabbed the victim over twenty times, causing severe damage to her nerves, severing some of the tendons in her arm, puncturing a lung, and causing massive blood loss. Miraculously, the young woman survived these injuries, but her attacker had not been caught- Moen had fled after the stabbing, leaving her victim for dead. It wasn’t until February 14, 2016- three months after the attack- that Pearl Moen was arrested after her mother called the police to say that her daughter matched the description of the stabbing suspect she had seen on flyers. Disturbing excerpts from Moen’s diary were read at her trial, including one entry from the night of the stabbing.
“So, okay, I’ll start with the exciting bit. I stabbed an innocent woman to death earlier today. (Technically yesterday since it’s 1 am). It was absolutely fantastic. Murder gives me a high unlike any other. It feels like this crisp unreality, flashing and sparkling, adrenaline and shock. Fight or flight mode. How do I even go about describing it. The whole thing was unreal. I’m so proud of myself. I stabbed her like 20 times. Maybe more. I wasn’t counting. She screamed & grabbed at me saying ‘what the fuck?! Help! Leave!’”
She is currently being held in Travis County Jail.
