Self-Care Tips: How to Put Yourself First When Caregiving for Another

Taking care of yourself first is a priority. In many cases, caregiving is a full-time job. It demands most of your time, attention and energy. If you don’t take care of yourself, you’ll have nothing left in your reserves. Following these self-care tips are a wonderful way to get started and put yourself first.

Take a moment to remind yourself right now that, regardless of your current level, you are doing a phenomenal job. One can only move so fast, so please give yourself more credit.

In the world somewhere, right now, someone is pouring coffee in a hotel lobby in an island town waiting for the sun to come up, thinking about how in the world somewhere, at the exact same time, someone else is making tea before bed on a warm night in the countryside. And somewhere else, someone is waiting for a train in a busy city to get dinner with the girl he is breaking up with, who is putting on mascara across town thinking about her brother who’s bartending in LA and the open invitation she never thought she’d want to use. And no matter what you’re doing right now, and whether or not you’re happy with it, it’s oddly comforting to think that any life you ever dream of having exists, and at any given moment, someone else is living it.

Those negative thoughts that you’re having right now?

Ditch them.

Those thoughts that you’re not good enough, smart enough, or talented enough?

Let go of them.

You only deserve to reside in thoughts of beauty and empowerment. Don’t allow for toxic ones to hold you back.
