self portrait with rita

At Columbia they were grooming a starlet named Rita Hayworth. Her photographs were hanging in the halls of the studio. Her face looking at you straight-on, one shoulder turned, was on nearly every magazine cover. I used to run into her in the makeup department. Rita was one I envied. I envied Rita her sophistication, although she was no more than a year or two older than I. That look made a difference in how the studio perceived you-as a sub-adult or a glamour girl. Not until years later would anyone refer to an actress in public as a “sex bomb.”
