PDP Introductions: Karin Asaka [EN Translation]

Karin’s introduction in Dengeki Online came out right after I translated Shizuku’s introduction… nice timing. Let me know if you find errors!

As with the others, this is an SIF-style dialogue, with Karin addressing the reader, a fellow student, before recording her introduction video (the text of which we got in the initial PDP member profiles).

Gakuen Bungou Stray Dogs 2017 Character Profile and Q&A

i’m so excited for this new anime! the visuals look great and i can’t wait uwu

(i’m not an active part of bungou fandom, but i saw this on twitter and i decided to try my hand at it! also can someone please let this grandma know how to put this all under a read more, that would be much appreciated)

Our spring is still young and a little painful! The return of Bungou Seishun Graffitti!

Nakajima Atsushi
A very normal high school student except for the fact that his white hair stands out. He became a member of the Armed School Council (as an assistant) due to certain reasons and helps solve fights at school. According to Dazai, he’s “a man of love and justice”.

Dazai Osamu
A mysterious young man who’s tall and has disheveled hair. He’s the secretary of the Armed Student Council, but never does any paperwork. His hobby is committing suicide. Because he keeps going in and out of the hospital, his real age is unknown.

Oda Sakunosuke
A student teacher who was assigned to the school. It seems like he’s acquainted with Dazai, but the details are a mystery. His usual breakfast is Canadian bacon and scrambled eggs. His favorite food is mixed curry.

Akutagawa Ryuunosuke
Known as “Prince of the Infirmary”. He wears a frilly piece of cloth around his neck, but even he doesn’t know what it’s called. Since he coughs often, he’s frequently in the infirmary.

Nakahara Chuuya
A delinquent transfer student who wears a black hat and knows about Dazai’s past. His hat was confiscated on the first day of his transfer because it was against the school’s dress code. Short.

Sakaguchi Ango
A prefect who’s trademark is his glasses. He doubts if Atsushi’s white hair is natural. Known as “Professor[-like] Glasses”.

Question 1 - Please introduce yourself.

Atsushi: My name is Nakajima Atsushi. Other than the fact that my white hair stands out, I’m just another normal high schooler. I became a member of the Armed Student Council because of certain reasons. My favorite food is chazuke! Being alive is such a wonderful thing. It’s another new day after you sleep and wake up, and you get to eat!

… Um, my hair is actually natural?

Dazai: Introduce myself? A self introduction… what do you want to know about me? My name? It’s Dazai Osamu. I’m the secretary of the Armed Student Council, though paperwork is rather annoying. I spend my days looking for good ways to commit suicide. Since I’m always in and out of the hospital, I’ve had to repeat the school year for a number of times…

Hmm? What is it? So… you’re curious about my age. I’ll leave that to your imagination.

Akutagawa: I am Akutagawa. I am a mere high school student who learns at school and lives on the streets. I suffer from a respiratorial disease, so I unwittingly spend half of my time at the school infirmary. I know more about the arrangement of the medicine cabinet than the school nurse. I am greatly troubled by the fact that someone has started calling me by the nickname “Prince of the Infirmary”. I would like to ruthlessly get rid of useless hindrances and people who create needless havoc, but at this point in time there are no such people for me to get rid of at school.

… That frilly thing on my lapel? I know not of it’s name.

Chuuya: Aa? Why the hell do I have to introduce myself. It’s damn annoying.

… Ugh! Fine! I just gotta do it, right?! I’m Nakahara Chuuya. It pains me to say this, but I have something like an unfortunate acquintance with that asshole Dazai. That hat that I like… is at home right now. Like hell I’m letting the school confiscate it because it goes against the dress code!

My height…? If you treasure your life then you sure as hell better not say any more than that.

Ango: I’m Sakaguchi Ango from Class 3B. My height is 178cm, and my weight is 62kg. I am currently appointed as a school prefect. It seems like the recent transfer student has a very striking hair color. He claims that it’s natural, but whether or not that’s true…

Pardon me? … Wait, this is a mole. It’s not dirt.

Odasaku: A self-introduction? My name’s Oda Sakunosuke. My friends call me Odasaku. I’ve been assigned to this school as a student teacher, and I teach Literature. I don’t think it’s anything particularly worth mentioning… Is this enough [for a self-introduction]? Ah right, I eat curry rice three times a week. It’s not that I like it specifically, it’s just a habit of mine. The curry rice that I eat has vegtables that would melt in your mouth and beef tendon that’s been stir-fried with garlic. It tastes light. I cook that with an excellent blend of spices, then mix it all up with a lot of rice. I eat it with eggs and sauce.

… Hmm? Dazai? Dazai is…

Aa, sorry looks like it’s time for the staff meeting. We’ll talk more about that later.

Question 2 - Tell us your favorite class.

Atsushi: My best subject is Physical Education! Today we had a joint-PE class with Dazai-san and the others, but Akutagawa had to leave for the infirmary in the middle, and Nakahara-san picked a fight with Dazai-san, then Dazai-san disappeared all of a sudden… It’s a pity it didn’t seem like a Physical Education class anymore. It’d be great if I could do sports properly next time…

My favorite subject is probably Literature. I don’t really understand some of the more difficult things, but I’m happy that I get to read a lot of books!

Dazai: I don’t particularly like class. I already know these things without having to be taught, so why do I have to go out of my way to be locked up in a small room just for that. It’s not even a good way to kill time. Especially Physical Education, since it’s still so cold during this time of the year that I’d rather sleep in the infirmary. But Akutagawa-kun’s there in the infirmary… and Yosano-sensei would find out that I’m skipping class. Kunikida-kun would start nagging at me too.

But during joint-PE class today I passed by Odasaku. That wasn’t bad.

Akutagawa: Due to the fact that I spend half of the school year in the infirmary, I lack enough information to form a proper opinion of my likes and dislikes of the classes. In general, I don’t dislike any of the classes. Though I’m rather stumped over the calculation of definite integrals [in mathematics], I’m satisfied with the classes overall.

I would like to join swimming classes once.

Chuuya: … Class? Not interested. It’s just that I can’t stand to be worse than that asshole Dazai. Even though that jerk’s literally just a bandage attachment, his brains piss me off…

That’s why it’s not a matter of liking or disliking it. This is a showdown between me and Dazai. And if it’s a fight then there’s no way I’m falling behind. That’s all there is to it.

Ango: I don’t really understand the point of this question. To like or dislike it, I’ve never thought of class from that point of view. It’s because class is something you’re always supposed to attend. It’d be troublesome to constantly skip class the way Dazai does. Ah yes… to be good or bad at it, if it’s from that perspective then I understand. Anyone would have a tendency to score well or score badly in particular subjects.

Naturally I don’t have any subjects that I’m bad at.

Odasaku: My favorite class? I’ve never thought about it. I don’t decide to do things based on whether I like something or not. For most things in general at least. I’m a teacher, and since teaching is a job where it’s required for me to conduct classes, then that applies even more. If we’re just talking about likes and dislikes, then I don’t dislike my job as a teacher. Though I don’t look like it.

Speaking of, I passed by Dazai on campus today. It seemed like he’s actually attending class for once, though I wonder how long he intends on staying a high schooler.

Question 3 - Please tell us what you had for dinner tonight.

Atsushi: I had chicken chazuke today! Umeboshi topped with shredded nori, and also yesterday’s leftover chicken. When you take a bite of that together with hot soup and the little strips of konbu floating on top… that’s the best! Every day I get to eat, go to school, and work for the Armed Student Council even though it’s a little tough. I’ll work hard tomorrow as well!

Ah… um, I really have to go talk to Sakaguchi-san… He probably won’t believe me even if I tell him that my hair’s natural. I’ll go ask Dazai-san for advice…

Dazai: Hm…. How annoying. If Odasaku’s there then I’ll have to properly go to school, so I might as well go to sleep. But I’m hungry… But since we had Physical Education today I’m exhausted… And I hate having to boil water. I want my food to come to me…

Hey fooooood – cooooooome –

Akutagawa: Western-style food. I designed a menu that considers nuitritional value and prioritizes nourishment to the respiratorial system. However, as I do not have a large appetite, I do not consume very much.

I hate mikans, but I occasionally crave some after meals.

Chuuya: Boiled spinach with mitsuba and miso soup. The ingredients [for the miso soup] are tofu and green onion. And grilled fish. And rice. Then I might as well make the side dishes for tomorrow’s bento. That fucking Dazai always steals from my bento…

I’ll definitely make him cry tomorrow.

Ango: Since I have to prepare the paperwork that’s due for submission, I don’t really have time to cook. When this happens I eat energy bars that I bought from the drugstore with other nuitritional suppliments…

Haa… I’d like to have a warm meal.

Also, Nakajima Atsushi-kun. Let’s have a proper talk tomorrow.

Odasaku: I was gonna go with curry but I’ve already had that yesterday. I made nikujaga today. I was thinking about things while making it so I made a bit too much. There are a lot of things to think about in this world, and whatever you think about wouldn’t necessarily come to a good conclusion. Since it can’t be helped, I brought the extras to Dazai’s place. He probably thought that preparing a meal was too troublesome and was rolling around on his bed anyway. Dazai’s been living next door for a while now. Hopefully he found the food before it got cold.

I’ll see you tomorrow then. Don’t be late because you stayed up all night.

if you thought akutagawa’s answers sound weird, it was deliberate because he is literally an old man and hey, it’s april fool’s. hope y’all enjoyed this and lmk if i messed up anything o/

slef-medicate  asked:

Hi! Can you link me to the sites you're using to pre study AP chem? And do you have any pre study for AP US history?

For AP Chemistry:

(note- I talked to my ap chem teacher at the end of the year and asked for course-specific things to study. this varies depending on your teacher/school. what I specifically have to study can be found here

official college board page - lots of good resources for staring out. the website outlines exactly what you should be learning within the course, which I have used to study various elements from within that.

bozeman science - videos on literally everything, arranged in an orderly manner! the videos make it super interesting (can be used for pretty much any science class,  too.)

science geek - this is for a specific school, but ive found the powerpoints and notes on there super useful

free practice tests + exercises

learnorator practice tests - use these with the bozeman videos

things to print out + keep on your desk (also videos)

cracking the ap chem exam (book)

nice, mostly free things

memorize elements + give rice for every correctly answered question

crash course chemistry - not necessarily for ap, but still super helpful, especially if you’re a super visual learner. also, I love hank green

AP United States History:  (I have to take this next year, too. I haven’t considered studying for it, but I think I’ll start now haha)

official college board page

study notes page - all you need for the actual course. might do you some good to read through a few of the tabs just to know what to expect

wonderful videos - literally my faves. scroll down for non-exam stuff

crash course us history - again, not necessarily for ap, but if you’re not a huge history person, this will be the best way to get an introduction. say what you like about john green, but he can teach history soups well.

free practice exam

learnerator page

crash course book (nothing to do w the youtube)

textbook notes (depends on your course, still generally has a lot of good stuff)

practice quizzes

hope this helps!

Sight beyond Sight: Chapter 2

Summary: When Kimberly lost her eye sight, she gained something back in return and entered a world that she never thought existed.

AN: So this one has a bit more violence in this one. It has a scene where there is some blood, (not a lot) but I wanted to add a warning here as well just to be on the safe side. Also I did a little research when it came to Kimberly’s new adjustment but if i missed something, please let me know. Also if you want to give advice concerning the topic at hand it would be much appreciated.

Also another warning, there are some derogatory terms in this chapter as well.

Chapter 2: A cacophony of endless sound.

“Love is blind, and therefore not responsible for whoever she bumps into.”
Matshona Dhliwayo

Kim took about three weeks off from school after her accident.

At least that’s what Principal Caplan ruled it after “investigating” the situation concerning Kim’s injuries on school ground. Naturally it was Amanda’s father who had tight connections with the schools board of education that convinced them not to make his daughter a person of interest. Even though Trini knew that it was Amanda and Harper that shoved Kim face first into those acidic chemicals, there was no proof to officially punish those two girls.

But Trini knew. Their smug faces, the fact that they would giggle each time they cast glances at Trini, it was all saying the same thing “We’re untouchable and there’s nothing you can do about it.” The fact that they would get away with such a horrible action infuriated the yellow ranger to know end.

She didn’t care about their history. She didn’t care about some leaked picture drama in the past. There was no excuse for blinding her best friend.

She wanted to hurt them, to tear them apart, she wanted to cause the same pain and suffering that Kimberly was going through right now. But if she did that, then she’d be lowering herself to their level.

“Kim wouldn’t want that Trini.” Jason told her one day. Right before she was about to jump them from behind. “Especially after she’s changed so much for the better. This would be letting her down”

And Trini knew Jason was right. Kimberly turned  a complete 360 in her eyes. She was nicer, more open and most importantly she treated people the way that the deserve to be treated. Without judgment. She wasn’t the vein self centered mean girl that she was in the beginning. She wasn’t the bully that would send nude pictures of her friends to her boyfriend anymore.

She wasn’t that person and to do something like that would go against everything that Kim stood for. But that didn’t make Trini’s anguish or guilt go away. It just made it worse.

All she  could do was sob into Jason’s broad chest as he held her trying his best to dissipate Trini’s every growing guilt. If only she never told Kim about what Amanda said and told her that she was still in the science building. Kim might still have her vision today.

Kimberly liked to watch a lot of movies. And she’d like to think that she’s watched quite a few movies when dealing with vision loss. The movies make like to romantacize things when it came to being blind. There would be a montage of someone learning to read braille, they would fly by and pick it up in a heart beat and at the end of the film the blind character would end up becoming a public figure of sorts and end up making a world changing discovery all while saving the planet and getting the guy or girl in the end and living happily ever after.

But what they don’t show is how is the struggle that a blind teenager goes through. The complete overhaul of your school schedule to fit in those important introduction to braille learning, learning how to use a cane (which kimberly hated. It just reminded her of what she lost), learning to use audio books, having an aide following you around, it infuriated her to no end.

Kimberly absolutely despised having an aide with her. She prided herself of her independence and self reliance. Having someone around assisting her felt like having a baby sitter at her age. And apparently these aides weren’t to keen in being around her. She must have scared of four different aides. The last one reduced to tears as she ran off swearing never to work with another blind kid again.

On her first day back, her friends welcomed her with open arms. Naturally everyone in her group asked how was doing. Billy was the most excited as he literally jumped into the pink rangers arms asking how she was holding up and if she’s feeling better. He was always a sweet kid.

Zack was his usually sarcastic and dark humored self. But he meant well, even if he sometimes stuck his foot in his mouth.

“Hello Kimberly! Its good to see you!” he shouted. Which earned him a grimace and laugh from the pink ranger.

“Zack. She’s blind. Not deaf.” Jason reminded the black ranger. All Zack could do was blush at his embarasing mix up and apologize. Trini was uncharacteriscially quiet throughout the greeting. If it wasn’t for Kimberly hearing her familair footsteps and picking up the scent from the lemonade flavored lip gloss she was always wearing she wouldn’t have known that Trini stuck around.

“Hey Kim.” Trini gave her friend a timid response. Still unable to look Kim in her eyes. Not that she could since the pink ranger had on her perscription sun glasses. Her pupils were still sensitive to the lighting.

“Trini…” the former cheerleader placed her hands onto the shorter Latina’s shoulders as she rubbed them gently. She knew that Trini blamed herself. She could sense the girls heartbeat changing ever so slightly whenever she was around them. And it absolutely shattered her.

“You know when I was in the hospital, you guys were the only ones that visited me. That really kept me going you know?” She looked back up to her four team mates. The same team mates that never judged her or turned their backs on her. The same team mates that turned her into a better person.

“We’re just glad you’re back Kim.” She could hear Jason’s comforting and authorative voice. “It wasn’t the same without you.”

“Yo I really dig your shades. You got the whole Agent smith thing going for you.” Zack’s joke managed to get a laugh from everyone in the group. Even the previously wordless Yellow Ranger.

“Actually it’s more like Neo.” Billy began countering Zack’s statement. “ Agent Smith’s glasses aren’t as round as yours, and your rims are thicker so-”

“Oh god…”Kimberly just shook her head and smiled. Sight or no sight they were the same goofy idiots she knew and loved. “I really did miss you guys.”

“We missed you to K.” Their leader would mirror the group’s sentiments as the five of them walked down the halls of Angel Grove High to tackle the rest of their day.

Kimberly prided herself in her ability to do things on her own. She was a quicker learner and very skilled at remembering things after being taught to her only once. Her fellow rangers could attest to that as they’d all agreed she picked up those combat skills a lot quicker than most people. She was by every definition of the term an “independent women.” Yet her first few classes in the morning were those “Special classes” (according to her mom) that would teach her the tools and skills she needed to learn for every day life. And for the first time Kim found herself struggling.

She had to relearn everything from scratch. How to read, how to compose written sentences (she’d have resources available to her for that though) even simple things like math and searching the internet had it’s own system. Something that Kim was oblivious to. It was the first time in her life that she felt alone and frightened.

And it was the first time that she realized how many things in life she took for granted. Going to the movies with her friends, watching Billy’s face light up when talking about whatever sci fi movie that was released this week (It was some kind of new Star Wars film. She wasn’t into that genre), Seeing Zack and Jason’s face light up and laugh at random reasons, and Trini.

God how she’d miss looking into those deep brown eyes of hers. She knew the Latina’s face by heart. She probably studied it so many times that she could remember it even if she was blindfolded. Which ironically isn’t that far off in her current situation. But it was the little things she also missed. Texting with the group, taking photos on her instagram account, using her smart phone, everything that she loved doing she had taken for granted.

The day she was released from the hospital she wanted to use her phone to post an update on her facebook telling everyone that shes happy to be back home only to be met with the realization that she wouldn’t be able to see the keys in order to type out the message. Hell she couldn’t even see the apps that were on her smart phone. She actually broke down in tears at that very moment knowing that her life would change forever. Her own mother could only console her distraught teenager daughter the only way she knew how. Holding her and rocking her back and worth while rubbing her back as Kim clung to her mother’s waist like she used to when she was a little girl. “You’re a Hart. Kimberly. And Hart’s always find a way to keep beating. Even if the rest of the body shuts down.” her mother would say to her whenever she doubted herself. Kimberly would take whatever comforting and encouraging words she could get.

At Lunch though most things remained the same for the most part. Billy would go on about whatever science project he was working on while Jason would warn him not to blow up anything or cause anymore fires, the young science and tech entheusiast would keep saying “it was only that one time!.” Which wasn’t true. It was multiple times. But she was happy for that small twenty minute break of normalcy in her new routine. And like always Trini would be sitting next to Kimberly.

That’s something she’ll never take advantage of again. She was so grateful that the short Latina was there by her side. What was different was that Kimberly was not only able to hear the conversations going on in her table, but she was able to hear other people’s conversations around her. The jock’s at the table laughing at a video where one of them was beating up a smaller student, the cheerleaders at their usual tables making nasty comments and slut shaming comments about other students on facebook, she was able to pick up Amanda’s hateful words about her. About how “kimberly got what was coming to her. That bitch deserved it.” and Kimberly was outside of the lunch room of all places when she heard it!

Was she going crazy or was everything just…louder? The constant noise in her head and the overwhelming of her senses was giving her a headache. She felt Trini’s hand touching her shoulder in concern. The yellow ranger must have seen Kim’s face of discomfort.

“Kim? You ok?” Trini asked. Her voice laced with worry. “Do you need to go to the nurse or something?”

“No, I’m fine.” Kim waved off the other girl’s concern rubbing her own temples. “It’s just a small headache. Really I’m ok”

“You sure kim? You don’t look so good.” It was Jason’s turn to voice his concern for his fellow ranger. “Maybe Trini is right. A trip to the nurses office might be a good thing.”

The pink ranger was about to protest until she lifted her nose towards Jason’s direction. Her sense of smell being attacked overwhelmed by whatever meat or meat like substance Jason was eating for his lunch.

“Jace what the hell are you eating?” Kim asked in disgust. Jason just looked at her in confusion as he took another bite of his lunch.

“Uh…meat loaf?”

“Is that what it smells like?” The pink ranger would inquire, again scrunching up her nose in disgust. “It smells more like spam and greasy bread ugh.” She placed her hands over her own stomach as her sense of smell was attacked with the strong odor from Jason’s lunch. For kim, she never really paid attention to what her friends ate. Before her accident she never even noticed the quality of the food in the school.

But now the blind ranger’s sense of smell was not only bombarded the scent from the cafeteria but all around her. The fresh cut grass they were all sitting on, the salad dressing on Trini’s lunch, the smoke coming from the teacher’s lounge, it was pulling her sense of smell in multiple directions at once.

She never ate the school lunch before, she always brought her own organic and preprepared lunch with her to school. She never trusted the food before but after taking in a whiff of what Jason was eating she sure as hell wasn’t going to be dining down on whatever Angel Grove high was feeding their students.

“That’s because you never ate the school lunch before princess.” Zack smirked taking in a forkful of the mashed…whatever that they were serving today. “Us poor kids? We gotta go with whatever the public schooling system feeds us. Which isn’t so bad. Taco tuesdays are great.”

“I kinda like the deli sandwiches they give us on fridays. The sandwiches are always squared, and it comes with a donut from Krispy Kreme.” Billy chimed in as he took a bite from his peanut butter and jelly sandwich. It was the least offensive food item on the table. Kim however barely touched her own food. She didn’t have much of an apatite these days.

“Sorry guys. It’s just that everything smells so…strong.” The brunette just squinted her eyes trying her best to block out this new sensation she was feeling. It didn’t help knowing that the sun was shining down on her still sensitive and raw pupils. The sunglasses only could do so much.

“Hey Kim. I was thinking. Maybe we could talk to Zordon about your accident. He might be able to do fix this.” Jason suggested. His tone changing in the slightest.

Kimberly’s head snapped up at her friend’s suggestion. She never thought about it before. Zordon did come from a planet where his technology was more advanced than theirs in terms of discovery and progress.

“Yeah. I mean he’s gone some serious star trek technology going on. It’s worth a shot right?” The other rangers nodded in agreement. For the first time since her accident, Kimberly started to feel some hope. As their lunch period was coming to a close and the group got up from their seated position they were greeted uncerimoniously by a very nasally and annoying laughter. Kimberly knew who that laugh belonged to. She cringed enough times at it’s droll sound from behind her back.

“Well if it isn’t the charity case and it’s group of school Rejects.”

Kimberly flinched at the sound of Amanda’s familiar demeaning voice. The other four people in the group just glared at the resident queen bee and her entourage just surrounding them. Kim could hear Ty and Harper’s malicious laughter in the background as a crowd started to form around them.

“Hey Kim. Welcome back. I see that it’s be kind to the handicap day. And look! You got yourself a seeing eye dog! How sweet.” Amanda cooed as she batted her eyelash towards Trini. The Yellow ranger only narrowed her eyes towards her in anger in response. A mixture of giggles and murmmers surrounded the large forming group as the rest of Kim’s friends stood in defense. Jason was the first to speak out.

“Amanda why don’t you do us all a favor a leave? We’re not looking for trouble.”

“Yeah don’t you have a sugar daddy to annoy and bum pocket change off of or something?” Zack would retort. He was never as nice as their fearless leader of the group. That seem to have riled Amanda’s feathers.

“Hey Chink, why don’t you make yourself useful and take your mommy to her chemotherapy session. I hear she’s coming up towards her expiration date.”

That seemed to have worked on Zack as he looked as if he was about to Lunge towards Amanda. Girl or not nobody was about to make light of his mother’s situation. If it wasn’t for Billy and Jason holding the black ranger back and convincing him not to engage he probably would’ve lost it by now.

“Are you serious Amanda? What the hell is your problem?” Trini was starting to lose her own patience as Ty and Amanda stood directly in front of her. Blocking her path. She just glared up at the two taller bullies leaving Amanda standing face to face with Kim.

“Relax. I just wanted to welcome Kim back. So she can SEE. The warm welcome that she’s getting ” Amanda added a petty jab as she blinked her working eyes in front of the now quivering blind girl. She leaned into Kim’s ears and sneered quietly. “ After all, you know all about sending people visual aid right?”

Kim could only bite her lip at Amanda’s reminder of what she did. It wasn’t one of Kimberly’s proudest moments. And there wasn’t a day that didn’t go back that she wished she could take back what she did. A part of her even wondered if she was a nice person to Amanda, maybe the girl wouldn’t have turned out to be such a callous bitch to everyone.

“By the way. Nice shades Kim! Still managing to stay fashionable even after your blunder I see. What are these Prada?” Amanda snatched the glasses off of Kim’s face. For any normal person they would barely feel anything other than some embarassment, but with kim’s accident being recent it felt like someone was pouring scalding hot water into her eye sockets. Kimberly screamed in pain as the harsh sunlight came in contact with her still weakened pupils.

She clenched her eyes shut covering her scared frontal face with her own hands. The endless noise of disgusted yelps and laughter filling her ears pumling her ear drums mercisly. “amanda did you see her eyes? They’re white as hell! God her scars are so gross” She could hear harper and Ty’s laughing as Trini and the rest of the group was trying to break free.

“That’s enough Amanda!” Jason yelled as he and Zack tried to advanced towards her only to be blocked by a group of his own former peers from the football team. Trini tried to break free of Ty and Amanda’s grasp. Even Billy who was usually the calmest of the group had to be held back by Amanda’s entouage. Amanda just walked up to Kimberly who still had her eyes shut. Tears were already starting to leak from the pink ranger’s defective eyes.

“Don’t think I’m gonna take it easy on you just because you’re handicap Hart.” Amanda sneered one last time before violently shoving Kimberly to the ground. “You gotta watch where your going Kim. You really should try to see what’s in front of you.”

Amanda gave one last spiteful laugh before throwing the ranger’s sunglasses down onto the ground. As Kim fell to the dirt her head came in contact, even in her muddled state of mind, her senses were still in overdrive, Trini yelling Kim’s name as she rushed towards her along with her other friends, the sounds of footsteps rushing towards her, the heat coming from the mass of bodies surrounding her, as she drifted off into the darkness, the blood from the cut on her head spilling out of her wound the only thing running through her mind was the endless echos and vibrating sound that would never cease.

AN: I know I ended this chapter in a bit of a downer. But I wanted to set this up for something much more extraordinary in the upcoming chapters! It’s definitely gonna take a much more intense spin. At least I hope it comes across that way. lol

“If You Had $10,000, What Would You Do With It?” and Other Questions in The Art of Conversation

When you first meet someone, you generally don’t ask them this right off the bat.

You ask them about what they do, their hobbies, school, work, stuff like that.

When I meet with Japanese students for tutoring (at my fav 24-hour cafe), there are a few things I have observed (and have been taught) about conversations (particularly introduction conversations) that aren’t present in American culture:

  • Only answer what you were asked. If someone asks you how you get to school, just say you get there by car, not “Well, public transportation here is not very good, so I go by car. I wish we had a good transit system, but the city is too wide.” The other person 1. tunes out, 2. thinks you are self-centered. I’ve been told that it also makes you look pretentious in a sense because in Japanese culture people who talk a lot (like above) are trying to look smart. Of course, there is still the art of not sounding too harsh or straightforward with terse answers, but I think these are two different things.
  • Even in a normal conversation, you shouldn’t drag on too much. A couple weeks ago, Naoto (someone I talk to fairly regularly) asked me what I was doing the next day, and I said it was me and my boyfriend’s anniversary. He asked what we were going to do, and I said, “Well, I think we’re going to go to dinner, but we’ve both been kind of sick, so I’m not sure if we’ll stay that long or go to [that particular restaurant]. He also has been working a lot, so he might be really tired. So maybe we’ll just watch a movie” Seriously, all I needed to say was that we’re going to dinner. (God, there are so many things I can think of where I just needlessly dragged on instead of answering the question. “I don’t eat fish or meat, I’m vegan. I usually eat tofu or frozen dinners because I’m not good at cooking.” “Oh, my parents are divorced. Well, not divorced technically, because they never married, so I guess just separated. I have a stepmom. though.”)
  • Don’t answer every question with 私は、私は、まるまるまる。It’s really boring and also makes you look chatty (in a bad way).
  • You want to ask questions back. Make the other person feel important as well. I know this is an American thing too, but I think less so. You don’t want to repeat back the same exact questions necessarily, but just don’t keep it very…disinterested, I suppose.
  • At the same time, don’t ask questions that are too probing or personal. One time I asked someone what their mother does, and they said part-time at a grocery store, but mostly at home, and I kept asking questions because I’m really intrigued by the stay-at-home mom/part-time job thing (I had just finished a book on housewives in Japan), but I could tell after that they were annoyed so I stopped.

In reference to this title, a very subtle yet clever question.

If you had $10,000, what would you do with it?

By far, the strangest question I have been asked in an introductory conversation, and I really thought nothing of it. I just said, “I guess I would buy a new car for my boyfriend’s family and save the rest.” But why?

“A lot of people ask this to see how the other will answer. $10,000 is not a lot. If it were a million dollars, that would be easy. Buy a house, save some. It’s a lot of money. But you have to choose wisely with $10,000. If I want to get to know a girl, I always ask her this question. If she says, ‘I’d save it all,’ I would think she’s kind of conservative. If she says, ‘I would buy clothes,’ I would think she is a little shallow. People ask this as sort of a judge of character.”
(less important side question: also another example of how girls can never win because they’ll be judged no matter what they answer with?)

I have never heard something like this in English. Perhaps something I would hear in a job interview? More commonly, maybe, “What would you do if you found a wallet on the ground?” but that’s a question that is obviously pointing to your values. Just another testament to the subtlety of Japanese language and culture.

The most common questions for when you first meet someone:

Where are you from?

What do you do? (occupation)

Do you have any siblings? (technically 兄弟 is brothers, but it also means siblings in this case.)

How old are you?

What are your hobbies?

Where do you live?

What’s your favorite food?

What’s your favorite book?

myongji university brochure - an interview with jonghyun, key and taemin
translation by: thatcoolcatmeow (via mini9296)

q. please tell us what you’ve been up to (lately).
jonghyun: we worked mainly overseas for two years and recently resumed promotions in korea after releasing “odd”. i’m glad and excited to see fans after a long time.
key: aside from the promotion of shinee’s album i’ve been performing the musical “chess” with the role fo anatoly. i’ve (also) been busy appearing on various shows.
taemin: i think “view” and other songs in the album have received so much love from everyone. it’s encouraging as everyone (seems to) love the album that all of our members worked hard on.

q. i heard the album is a hit worldwide — including in the u.s. and japan.
jonghyun: this album was ranked first on the billboard world chart. i feel very good that it received favorable comments from various places. also, last march, we held a concert at tokyo dome after our fourth year since debut in japan and, also, held a concert tour in twenty cities too.
key: i feel thankful that we are gaining good results overseas, too. we did try hard but i think we’re very lucky too.
taemin: it feels great as all the efforts we’ve put so far have come to frutation. i also feel thankful to sunbaenims who have pioneeed in the overseas market. we will work hard to become more influential artists abroad.

q. when thinking about your university what’s the first place / time / person that comes to mind?
jonghyun: i remember being very nervous when having (my) admission interview for graduate school at the end of last year. i don’t know how many times i practiced my self introduction and answered for expected questions whenever i had free time. but, at the interview, my mind went blank and i couldn’t think of anything. it was the most nervous moment (of my life) after my debut stage.
key: many sunbaenims of myoungji university who are successful in the broadcasting industry comes up in my head — just like the sunbaenims i will try hard to set a good example of my university and major.
taemin: when thinking about my university…, people in my film and music major come up first. although i cannot spend a lot of time with them because of my promotional activities i think my university life will be memorable because of them.

q. if you have a life motto, what would it be?
jonghyun: it would be “approval over understanding”. things that seem tricky or not understandable at first sight — if you approve of it’s existence as itself and search for solutions you can make a breakthrough.
key: mine is simple: i want to live in confidence — things like: “you will do well since you’re kibum!” (laughs)
taemin: my one is simple too: “man proposes, god disposes.” try as best as you can leave the rest to god’s will!

q. you have already succeeded as singers — if you have other goals, what would it / they be?
jonghyun: i don’t think visible resutls like numbers or size are important — just like having a deep meaningful conversation with someone, i want to do music that will remain for a long time.
key: a life enjoy and accepting the moment. i want to live each moment of my life accepting results whether they are bad or good in a humble way.
taemin: i want to be an artist who is able to send clear messages to people.

q. what would you like to say to your university friends?
jonghyun: we are young / our body and also our mind. so, try to experience as many things as you can.
key: there are times when you have to domsething you don’t want or things because of the situation — but, once in awhile, please think about what you really want.
taemin: above all, i want to say thank you to my friends in the film and musical major.

[translator’s notes]

i. this isn’t word for word. there are mistranslations here and there.
ii. please do not retranslate into another language.

i. jonghyun is currently working on his graduate degree. key and taemin are working on their bachelor’s. they are all majoring in film and music / musicals. jonghyun had previously attending chungwoon university — alongside onew — where he received his bachelor’s degree in broadcasting music. more information can be found here.

Hey Guys! Since I’m scratching on 50 followers, I think it’s time for an introduction post.

My Name is Annika, but I like my nickname Nani more. I’m 19 years old and from Germany. I’m doing a gap year right now to focus on self studying, but I will be a high school senior in the year 17/18 again :)

The languages I study are korean and swedish, but I’m interested in a lot more. I’m studying english since 3rd grade, so more than eleven years. Btw, if you have any question about german or english, you can pop into my inbox anytime! I love helping people :) And if you just wanna say hello or need advice, don’t be shy either, I’m really extroverted and enjoy making new friends a lot ♥

Apart from languages I took AP Biology, AP History, AP Politics and AP Psychology in School and continue to study these Subjects even now in my free time, especially Biology and History, because I enjoy them a lot.

My inspiration for this studyblr/langblr are of course @languageoclock @scottish-polyglot @langsandlit @studyign @elkstudies @studycxlture @acadaemic @theorganisedstudent @zeestudies @thepurplestudies @wit-and-learning @stuhdies @studylikeaslytherin @studybyeol @neko-studies @lazyhermione and more! I follow over 900 blogs and they’re all awesome and I’m really glad they exist and help other people to achieve their best! :)

I post anything study and language related while trying to keep the aesthetic of my blog light and pastel. If you wanna have me reblog something for you I will forget that aesthetic and do that, so if you have anything that you wanna share with more people, just message me!

Some random facts about me:

1. I’m really tall, standing at 5′11ft. But I guess thats normal when the average height of your female family members is about 5′7ft and the the average height of your male family members is about 6′3ft.

2. I love listening to french and korean music, on some days really girly stuff, on some days aggressive hip hop.

3. I love anything cute, pink and fluffy. I’m a real girly girl and I embrace that ♥

4. For my gap year I’m working in a care home for rich af elderly people.

5. My dream is to work in a hotel and change my location every year so I can travel the world, not as a tourist, but rather as someone living there.

I don’t really have study-inspired social networks except for this tumblr, but if you still wanna follow me, my insta is @annika_ries and I have a youtube channel with my best friend called @officialsamesoul :)

Sooo, enough of me, I hope my experience stays positive here and if you wanna talk, you know where you can find me!

Thoughts and Highlights from GW-EP01

The Self-Destruct Plan.  Heero Yuy probably never goes into any mission without a self-destruct mechanism attached to him or to his Gundam. He thinks he can accomplish any assignment (one does not need to squint to see he has his own share of moments of superiority complex), but he never discounts the possibility of him failing. And his answer to a mission gone awry is pushing that red button. His answer is suicide.

All right, I get it. Heero is so dedicated to his missions and so faithful to this some unspoken kill-yourself-in-case-of-failure Gundam Pilot Code to a point that the fandom could only give him the moniker “The Perfect Soldier”.  The whole thing’s almost reminiscent of samurais.

But what really bothers me is the lack of solid back story to support why he does what he does, or simply why he is who he is in the series. Heavy trainings? Sure. Use of torture? Possible. But his Episode Zero (or an English dub snippet of Endless Waltz between J and Dekim) does not fully succeed in presenting the answers that we can say have molded him into someone who thinks “life is cheap, especially mine”. It couldn’t be Odin Lowe’s death, because even before that, the little Heero is quite hardened already for an ordinary child. Okay, perhaps Lowe had him undergo an arduous training at a very young age, but I refuse to believe the cheap-life motto will come from someone who taught Heero to follow his heart. I just can’t.

I’ll probably have peace of mind right now if the creators have focused on that instead of continuing the story 30 years into the future, complete with cryogenized couples, Generation Xerox, and family trees practically becoming soap opera bushes. But alas, the creators’ time and effort is on Frozen Teardrop for three years now and counting. :(

The Self-Introduction. The fandom used to construe the “My name is Relena Darlian, what’s yours?” scene into meanings that range from sensible to ridiculous. However nicely constructed those interpretations may be, they still have no basis other than the assumptions they cooked up around Relena’s personality. Of course, that’s prior to the release of Episode Zero, which gives this moment a significant meaning to Relena’s identity and characterization.

Just a refresher: in Relena’s Episode Zero, she meets a new student in her school that looked a lot like the pilot Heero Yuy. He keeps to himself and the other students are avoiding and him for looking like a homeless war orphan. Relena feels alone too, even if she’s surrounded by crowds that fawn over her. Despite them probably sitting on the opposite sides of the financial stability spectrum, Relena feels a connection to the boy.

But Relena never gets herself to introduce herself to him. When she overhears her classmates talking about how the boy is part of a terrorist attack and that “they shouldn’t let anyone without some sort of social status attend this school”, she immediately tries to find the boy. She thinks that status shouldn’t matter, that they should all get along and be friends. Unfortunately he has already left. She regrets not reaching out to the boy when she has the chance, thinking that she should have at least asked for his name. “This is how I should have done it,” Relena says to herself, extending her hand in front of her. “My name is Relena Darlian, what’s yours?”

Initially, this scene symbolizes a desire for friendship. Relena is a lonely girl and we know it’s a comfort to find someone whom you think is similar to you, especially when you feel so misunderstood or sad. But it proved to be more than that. Our eleven-year-old Relena suddenly thinks of a level field, of equality, of why social strata shouldn’t dictate who should be ostracized. She thinks that difference shouldn’t be the reason for people to divide themselves. She thinks of coexistence! Perhaps she got the ideals from Mr. Darlian, or it’s probably her Peacecraft genes talking to her. We don’t really know. What we do know is that even this early, Relena is already taking her baby steps to pacifism, even if subconsciously.

She pulls this self-introduction again in the first episode, perhaps to rectify her first mistake of not reaching out when she has the chance.

Knowing all the backgrounds, it’s a nice juxtaposition of scenes for the characters of Heero and Relena. One believes in the disposability of his life upon a mission’s failure; the other believes every single one of us is significant. From here, we see how their beliefs change and develop as they themselves grow as individuals. :)

Of Beauties, Psychos, and Wiz Khalifa: The Reinvention of Fall Out Boy

by Erik van Rheenen

Fall Out Boy’s announcement for this summer’s co-headlining tour with stoner rapper extraordinaire Wiz Khalifa and college-kid favorite Hoodie Allen nearly drowned in a riptide of fan backlash, a maelstrom-of-sorts swirling with expected-if-closed-minded comments sticking the band with the obligatory “sellout” stamp and raised wavering eyebrows about FOB’s resolutely un-pop-rockish tourmate.

So here’s a lifeline: the Boys of Zummer lineup makes sense, if not from a spelling standpoint (not fixing that “Z” makes me rebel against my internal copy editor) than from a ticket-selling one. My only real problem with the tour is the co-headliner — I wish the boys of FOB hitched their star to a more technically adroit and refined rapper than Wiz Freakin’ Khalifa — but the mixed-lineup bill, especially with two artists with absolutely inescapable songs, will get butts (and, presumably, well-hidden, sneaked-in blunts) in the seats.

While the staunchest of the new-Fall-Out-Boy-sucks crowd can’t fault FOB for scheduling a high-profile, big venue tour alongside a Top 40 mainstay (I’m almost making this sound like Monumentour, Part Deux yeah?), the gripe I’ve read most often is that touring with Khalifa — as opposed to, say, Paramore or Panic! At the Disco, again — is equivalent to a betrayal of the band’s roots.

“These aren’t the same guys who played basement shows and DIYs in Chicago,” says the prototypical new-FOB-sucks fan, “They barely play anything off Take This to Your Grave in concerts anymore.”

do you ever worry that people think you’re like a self centered ass for always talking about dance because i always get concerned that just stating i dance makes me sound like one of those people who think they’re better than everyone just because they’re a dancer and it’s like no you don’t understand it’s that i literally have nothing else to talk about dance is the only thing i care about and have the time to do so there’s nothing else for me to say
