foreign films 2.0

hi all! follow-up on THIS post.

this is another very long post giving you film and series suggestions in foreign languages - i have included my three target languages and french just to spice things up a bit.

if you’ve seen any of these or want to expand on the post please fell free to do so!! this list is obviously very subjective and contains things that i have seen and enjoyed, so i would love to see a greater variety of genres/directors featured on here.

wakolda - this is straight up one of my favourite films ever. 1950s argentina. a family accomodates a guest at their hotel, unaware that their guest is nazi monster josef mengele.

tiempo sin aire - colombian mum and son escape the horrors of civil war and move to the canary islands, but the mother will not rest until she has found her daughter’s rapist. contains some graphic scenes, not for the faint of heart.

la regenta - adaptation of 19th century classic, both film and miniseries (3 x 1.5 hrs) available on youtube. the film is mediocre but the miniseries stole my heart. pious wife anita torn between sexy local liberal and dark imposing priest. features an absolutely superb carmelo gomez as the cunning don fermin.

el crimen del padre amaro - another c19 classic, this time in a modern latin american setting where hot priest gael garcia b. can no longer fight his feelings for a certain young lady…

ocho apellidos vascos - SOOOOOOOO FUCKING FUNNY!!!!!

la piel que habito - almodóvar, banderas, weird, cringy, intriguing,  “a horror story without screams or frights” [wiki]

[wiki]

el secreto de sus ojos - “Using a nonlinear narrative, the film depicts a judiciary employee and a judge in 1974 … as they investigate a rape and murder case that turns into an obsession for all the people involved, while also following the characters 25 years later reminiscing over the case and unearthing the buried romance between them.”[wiki] RECOMMENDED

vacas - portrays the conflict between two basque families that lasts three generations, starting in 1875.

la princesa de francia - looks ery promising, centred around a group of actors preparing shakespeare’s “love’s labour’s lost”, in buenos aires. read review here

ligações perigosas [BR] - recently released tv globo miniseries, NOT A NOVELA, available on yt. adaptation of laclos’ les liaisons dangereuses. set in 1920s brazil. love, sex, intrigue, DRAMA, 1920s music. great acting by selton mello and alice wegmann. i cried watching this. i love selton mello

justiça [BR] - also a globo miniseries, follows various characters in recife as each of them searches for their own private justice. RECOMMENDED

amores roubados [BR] - yet another miniseries, based on the book “a emparedada da rua nova”. leandro returns to his hometown from SP and becomes involved with three women.

3% [BR] - a dystopian thriller series, apparently available on netflix. “ The show is set in a future wherein people are given a chance to go to the “better side” of a world divided between progress and affluence in the Offshore, and devastation and poverty in the Inland, but only 3% of the candidates succeed.”[wiki] RECOMMENDED

pecado fatal [EU] - angst, drama, shy sweet love but also bitten family secrets. “a young man and woman fall in love on the night they meet, but he takes advantage of her when she gets drunk. although she doesn’t remember anything from that night, something nags at the back of her mind.” not the most accurate description - just watch it its good

o convento [EU] - a literature professor goes to a portuguese convent to confirm a conspiracy theory about shakespeare. this film is actually in english and french as well as portuguese, but i’ve included it here because it was directed by the great manoel de oliveira. stars john malkovich and catherine deneuve.

o dia de desespero [EU] - another one by oliveira, portuguese entry for 1992 oscars. the film shows the final days of the life of famed c19 writer camilo castelo branco, his blindness and eventual suicide. probably available on youtube.

malena - a classic, story of how a beautiful young woman is ridiculed by her prejudiced community told through the eyes of a young boy lusting over her. very tastefully done and visually very pretty. plus it has monica belucci

la prima notte di quiete - 1972. scruffy alain delon is bitter and elopes with a mysterious student of his who keeps some dark secrets. very beautiful visually, lovely music, unexpected ending. watch this if you want to be sad and vague

lºeredità ferramonti - set in 1880s rome, cunning young woman weds into a split family and wreaks havoc. dominique sanda is brilliant in this. also very nice music by morricone.

des hommes et des dieux - algeria. eight monks live a secluded life in the mountains. when war breaks out, they are forced to make a choice between their faith and their lives. “a luminous tale of faith and heroism”, and also very prettily made.

venus noire - based on the true story of saartije bartman, a black woman showcased in 19th century europe because of her body. explores prejudice, otherness, fetishisation, directed by tunesian abdellatif kechiche. RECOMMENDED.

la dame aux camélias (1981) - isabelle huppert stars as the destitute and illiterate alphonsine who travels to paris and becomes a courtesan. based on alexandre dumas’ novel, of the same title.

To Keep You Safe and Sound {1/?}

Summary Tucked away in the mountains of New York, Omega! Reader lives a secluded life with her Alpha! Mother, until two unlikely visitors intrude on their solitude. Tangled AU, emphasis on the AU.

Warnings ➤ Mild emotional abuse from a parent. Discussions of heats/mating cycles/knotting. Eventual smut (as this is an ABO dynamic fic series there may be elements of dubious consent). Each part will have part-specific warnings as well. Swearing (there will ALWAYS be swearing, sorry.)

Words ➤ 1390

Notes ➤ This is for my lovely, talented wife @bookybuns‘ 4k fic fest, where I claimed the aforementioned Tangled AU prompt. To be entirely honest, this is my first real foray into MCU fic writing. A HUGE thank you to @a-splash-of-stucky for betaing for me!

The two super soldiers stare incredulously at the prosthetic arm on the dash of their getaway car. It’s several minutes before the blonde one speaks, his words slow, as if he himself doesn’t entirely believe them. “Nat heard he was working on something that would help you, I didn’t expect it to be this…” A large, calloused hand wipes over his jaw, smoothing the thick beard that covers those angles the world has been used to seeing. “Not after he completely obliterated your other one.”

His dark-haired accomplice shrugs the aforementioned shoulder, his eyes full of wonder. “Whaddya think? Is he really all that mad if he made this?” His gloved hand reaches out to caress the replacement.

Frederic Leighton (1830-1896)
“Light of the Harem” (1880)
Oil on canvas
Currently in a private collection

In Islamic culture, a harem is a secluded living area for women that is forbidden to men. Also called zenana in South Asia, this private space has been traditionally understood as serving the purposes of maintaining the modesty, privilege, and protection of women.

If read individually “安” (an) means peace/safety/stability in Kanji, and “産” (san) mean production/industry, but “安 産” (anzan) together means safe delivery when giving birth, which probably explains why they are that horrified, assuming the worst when a bunch of foreigner males walking towards them wearing a t-shirt representing procreation. In addition, unlike the other 3, these 2, having lived in a secluded village all their lives, probably haven’t seen too many foreigners around (other than Sandal, of course).

To Keep You Safe and Sound {Prologue}

Summary Bucky x Reader x Steve. Tucked away in the mountains of New York, Omega! Reader lives a secluded life with her Alpha! Mother, until two unlikely visitors intrude on their solitude. Tangled AU, emphasis on the AU.

Warnings ➤ None at the moment. Keep in mind this is an ABO dynamic fic.

Notes ➤This is for my lovely, talented wife @bladebarnes‘ 4k fic fest, where I claimed prompt 31. Tangled AU. This is not the official submission, just a prologue so I can rest easy. At the moment this is un-beta’d. If you are interested in beta’ing for me, PLEASE send me an ask. I’m looking for one or two people who express interest in helping me perfect what is sure to be a long-ish series.

Now or ever.’ The other Alpha unceremoniously dumped a carseat at her feet, and a manila envelope was handed to her. ‘I will ensure everything you and the pup need are taken care of, but if I find out you’ve so much as breathed his name, I’ll cut you off.’

The mother of the pup in the carseat nodded tersely, before scooping up her newborn child, and turning towards the door.

‘Oh, another thing. If it turns out to be as intelligent as he is, you will contact me immediately. Any information you need is in that envelope.I don’t require, nor want, you to contact me for any other reason. If I find out you haven’t contacted me about it’s intelligence, you won’t like the results.’

‘It is a she and her name is Y/N.’ The woman’s voice was strained, as if she was holding back the urge to challenge the Alpha behind her. ‘And don’t you fucking touch her ever again.’

I’m low-key scared that I might have a crush on someone right now why can’t I just be a heartless bastard and never feel an emotion again

So guys, here me out:

Sheith Dragon AU, because I’m really passionate about dragons.

So let me introduce you to an AU where the paladins are spirits/dragons who watch over their land, VERY heavily inspired by the dragons in Breath Of the Wild

  • Dragons are immortal creatures, but can willingly change into a human form. Usually these dragons are humans that convert into a dragon at the age of 18, after making a pact with the guardian spirit (read more about this concept here). So they basically will look like a teen for the rest of their lives.
  • When dragons die an unnatural death, they can reincarnate, since they’re guardian spirits who have this “Godly” mandate to watch over their land.
  • Usually dragons are creatures that keep to themselves, and choose to live a long, fulfilling immortal life without any humans involved.
  • But sometimes you have exceptions: Lance, for instance, is a dragon who has settled down with his own family and children. He has his parents, his brothers, sisters & cousins, and cares deeply for all of them.
  • Humans don’t know about the existence of dragons. They’ve heard legends and myths, but little do they know that there are dragons living amongst them. So Lance, who regularly passes by to visit his great-great-grandchildren, tells them that he’s a close friends of their parents, and doesn’t reveal his true identity.
  • Keith is the guardian dragon of fire. Keith used to live a secluded life, among the volcanos, when one day he climbed up the highest mountain of his domain and met the dragon of the sky: Shiro.
  • At that point Shiro had changed Keith’s perception about life and the little humans forever. But due to certain events, Shiro was destroyed by the same people, because they were afraid of Shiro’s dragon form.
  • The people who killed Shiro are known as Galra, who are the only humans who know about the dragons’ existence, and how to kill them. They captured and experimented on a dragon in the past.
  • Since Shiro’s death, Keith has spent years and years looking for Shiro’s reincarnated human form. In order to find him, Keith has resumed his human form himself, and lives among the humans in order to find him. Later, fate leads him to Shiro, but Shiro himself has zero recollection about his previous life and the fact that he’s a dragon.
Bite Me (Part 17)

Characters: DeanxReader, Sam

Warnings: Angst (self-hate, shameful thoughts, inner struggles), some fluff to help smooth everything over, lip on lip action, mild language

Overview: You were raised in the hunter life. You fell out of it. It wasn’t your choice to get pulled back in.

Word Count: 1,773

A/N: This is the LAST CHAPTER in my first ever fanfic. There is an epilogue after this, and then it’s all over. I’m both excited to share it with you and sad to have it all be over. Lee and Han (@wheresthekillswitch and @hannahindie) have been betas for this from Day 1 and have encouraged me, caught all my letter errors, and helped me make it to the end. These words, like everything else I write, are for me. Feel free to join me in the adventure.

Read (Part 1) (Part 2) (Part 3) (Part 4) (Part 5) (Part 6) (Part 7) (Part 8) (Part 9) (Part 10) (Part 11) (Part 12) (Part 13) (Part 14) (Part 15) (Part 16)

It was a slow endeavor, preparing to leave a place I’d only just started to settle into. I’d felt more safe in the three months that I’d been in the bunker than in the five years I’d lived secluded in my small town. But Castiel’s words resounded through my brain like church bells in a tall steeple, signaling my chance for redemption. And with each toll I slowly packed items in my duffle bag, keeping it all in an empty room of the bunker until it contained everything that I needed. And when that point came, I knew it was time.

I’d hidden my bag in my truck the night before, a small action of dedication to my decision. I’d wanted to wait until another hunt came on our radar so I could opt to stay behind, but things were quiet, and my soul was suffering, and I knew that if I waited any longer that I’d lose my willpower. So I hid the bag and woke up early that morning with as much steel resolve as I could muster.

Dean was already in the kitchen when I plodded in in my bare feet, his fuzzy gray robe bringing a small smile to my face. I walked over to where he was slowly sipping his coffee and tucked myself under his arm, nuzzling my head against his chest.

“Morning,” I murmured, wrapping an arm around his back and pulling the mug out of his grasp with my free hand. I took a small sip and winced at the bitter taste that flooded my mouth. “Would it kill you to put a sprinkle of sugar in here?”

And the experiences of Afro-Latinxs (Latinxs of African descent, black Latinxs, Afrodecendientes etc.) are diverse.

Every single Latin American region and country has subtle differences with their experiences around blackness.
You have Caribbean Latinxs of African descent, you have Central American Latinxs of West-Indian descent, you have the Garifuna cultures (who’s experiences may vary depending on the country they are from)

You have some in the U.S. Who may be mixed African-American and non-black latinx. Or some mixed Afro-Latinx and African American.
You have Afro-native/ Afro-Indigenous groups.
You have those who have different religious beliefs, some who live in secluded areas.

You have some who’s entire nation is mostly of people of African descent (e.g DR)
You have some people from countries where the black population is much smaller and less talked about/known.

etc. etc…

Scandinavian tales and creatures

Trollefolk, also simply called troll or vittror, are not that different from humans, though they live secluded lives deep in the forests. Some of them have the tail or horns of an animal, which they keep hidden when others are nearby. They have their own farms, keep cattle, get married, and work and live just like humans. However, they are capable magic users and not part of the Christian community, and are therefore shunned and feared.

Fallout 4′s plot is ripped off from New Vegas

A group of assailants led by a mysterious man attack you and take something from you before leaving you out in the cold (pun unintended)

You follow the trail of hints (especially in 4 where you have no choice but to follow the trail) and find out it has something to do with the secluded genius who lives in an isolated compound.

And rules the region with an army of robots

You get involved in the conflict between three factions over rule of the area and over an energy source.

There’s the aforementioned secluded robot geniuses, who needed something from you in order to upgrade their robots.

There’s the foreign invader force that seeks to take control of the region and has some fucked up ideology.

And there’s the morally grey “good guys” trying to take control away from the secluded robot geniuses.

The player can choose between these 3 factions or make their own.

It ends with a big climactic fight over the energy source.
