Layne attending a party at her home in 1998/1999 (she said it was a couple of years after Demri’s death, which was in October 1996). She said after most of the crowd left at night Layne was still there, and she wanted to go swimming so Layne followed her to the pool. Layne didn’t get in, but sat in a chair sipping a beer. He told her as a kid that he excelled at swimming, he said “I loved to dive into water.” He said the water felt like a whole other world. As Layne sat there and Nancy was swimming, a huge meteor went over them and it lit up Layne’s face. She said he looked like a kid again, and at that moment there was no darkness in his life. Layne said, “Did you see that? How close do you think that was to us, Ann? Do you think that almost hit us, Ann? How lucky are we to have seen that?” Ann responded that it was beautiful, and Layne retorted, “Do you have any idea how rare it is for a meteor that big, and that bright, to come that close to us? We are really really lucky people Ann. You and me.”

So the compass is the Pirates of the Caribbean Jack Sparrow compass. That compass is not like north or south - it takes you to whatever you want most at that particular time. And for me I kind of feel that is what my life is. I kind of go with what I want to do and what I want to achieve and how to be successful. And it’s never necessarily about right or wrong or what is good or what I should do. It’s always, always been what I want most and that’s why my life has always been what it’s been - like a traveler’s life and following the football. Because that is ultimately what I’ve always wanted. I do travel all the time and sometimes it gets hard. You’re on your own and you miss your family, but I never really feel like I’m lost. I always know that there’s a purpose for what I’m doing.

When Sunil Yapa’s laptop was stolen, he didn’t just lose his computer — he also lost the 600-page novel saved on it. Yapa summoned the will to write it all over again — but a little shorter this time. This second version has turned into a newly published novel about recurring themes in American history.

Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of a Fist was inspired by a real-life event; in 1999, thousands of demonstrators disrupted a meeting of the World Trade Organization in Seattle. Badly outnumbered police resorted to using tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets.

“Here’s a moment that we forgot about, or got lost in the news cycle that I think was a very important moment in American history,” Yapa tells NPR’s Steve Inskeep.

There are stories that are not romances. I can understand saying, “I don’t see this story as a romance, I’m not interested in exploring any relationship extra-canonically, I’m interested in X, a main focus of the story, that’s what I’m here to talk about.” but Sherlock is a romance from any angle. If you’re not interested in the relationship between Sherlock and John, I don’t know what you’re watching. There isn’t much else to hold on to. Whatever else there is is only there to provide obstacles and commentary on that key relationship.

I mean, that’s it, right there. Relationship. Love story. However you want to interpret it: still a romance.
