I wonder what Doggett thinks when he watches Mulder and Scully interact. He adores her and must have wondered how her partnership with Mulder worked. And then we get the "Essence" kitchen scene which feels like a private M+S moment until we pan out and see Doggett. And it's just like?? They're so happy to be together, and they trust baby goat enough that they allow him in on Flirty Theorizing Time at home. And I just wonder if seeing Scully smile melts his heart like it does mine.
One of my favorite season 8 things is that as soon as Doggett meets Mulder he starts to understand Scully (and the X-Files) in a way he didn’t before. He used to take it for granted that Scully would be the one with the out-there theories, and then Mulder shows up and suddenly Doggett’s asking her how it is that she came to believe. You can’t really know the cost or appeal of belief without knowing Mulder. You can’t really know Scully without knowing Mulder. So I think for Doggett it’s a sort of bittersweet mix of knowing how hard she worked to get to this point, which probably does nothing to help his (low-key) crush on her (that he knows is a non-starter), but then ultimately just being happy to see her come out the other side with something like contentment. And he’s glad that he still gets to be a part of this team, because all the baby goat wants is to be part of a good team. Doggett always used to talk about Mulder and Scully like they share a brain, and seeing that they work well together despite being so different gives him hope that he’ll find where he stands, too.
Also thanks for calling him baby goat it makes me so happy
