[Potential spoilers] What I hope, aka an anatomy of That Nygmobblepot Scene
That scene played out the way it did for a reason. If the show hadn’t wanted to emphasize the depth of feeling – all the feelings - between these two men, and crucially for the audience to pick up on these feelings, it would have played out entirely differently.
For one, it was almost wordless.
Oswald and Ed said everything they had to say through facial expressions and (limited) gestures. This allowed the emotions to come
through with far greater intensity than if they had simply stood
there yelling at each other. They conveyed the layers, the
complexity of what’s going on here; the aggressiveness of
Oswald grabbing at Ed through the bars, that grab of pure rage that
also looked just a little too much like yearning, like
reaching out; like raw, unvarnished need let loose and howling.
They couldn’t have done any of this
with words. Words would have defined things too precisely; contained
things, left no wiggle room for nuance. Clearly, that wasn’t wanted
It was perfect. It was AWESOME.
