sea of monsters set

At this point it’s been pretty conclusively established that the ocean is weird, but one of weirder marine phenomena I’ve encountered is the sea monk or sea bishop, an animal that was sighted of the coast of Poland in 1531, washed up on Danish shores in the late 1540s and went the 16th century equivalent of viral.*

*This of course had nothing whatsoever to do with the Protestant Reformation or Henry the Eighth declaring himself head of the Church of England.  Scientific interest only.

Pretty much every major work on fish in the next 100 years included one:

Guillaume Rondelet (1554) [“human features, but with a coarse and rude outline […] the head was shaved and smooth; the shoulders were covered by a cape.”]

Pierre Belon (1551)

Conrad Gesner (1558)

Richard Breton (1562) [Breton was a Protestant, which may explain the increased levels of eldritch]

Caspar Schott (1662)

Johann Zahn (1696)

And a late entry: this abomination from Robert Chamber’s The Book of Days (1869)

Explanations for these include most of the usual contenders: monk seals, grey seals, hooded seals, walruses, angel sharks, deliberate fraud of the Jenny Haniver variety,  Steenstrup’s ever popular ‘squid doing victory arms’.

The Edge of the Abyss (The Abyss Surrounds Us #2) by Emily Skrutskie

Three weeks have passed since Cassandra Leung pledged her allegiance to the ruthless pirate-queen Santa Elena and set free Bao, the sea monster Reckoner she’d been forced to train. The days as a pirate trainee are long and grueling, but it’s not the physical pain that Cas dreads most. It’s being forced to work with Swift, the pirate girl who broke her heart.

But Cas has even bigger problems when she discovers that Bao is not the only monster swimming free. Other Reckoners illegally sold to pirates have escaped their captors and are taking the NeoPacific by storm, attacking ships at random and ruining the ocean ecosystem. As a Reckoner trainer, Cas might be the only one who can stop them. But how can she take up arms against creatures she used to care for and protect?

Will Cas embrace the murky morals that life as a pirate brings or perish in the dark waters of the NeoPacific?

Disclaimer: I received a copy free from the publishers via Netgalley is exchange for an honest review

The Edge of the Abyss by Emily Skrutskie follows the events in the previous books. Cassandra Leung has pledged her allegiance to the ruthless pirate queen Santa Elena, rather than return to the safety of her home. The Reckoner she was training, Bao, has been released free into the vast ocean. Cas is now training, she’s in the running to take over Santa Elena in being the captain of the ship. However, that is the least of her problems. The Neo-pacific and the whole eco-system is in danger. Bao isn’t the only Reckoner roaming free, there are many other illegal Reckoners sold to pirates that have escaped their captors and are wrecking havoc in the ocean. It’s up to Cas and her fellow crew members to stop it.

There are so many things I love about this duology. It is a futuristic science fiction book, a fantastic one at that. It has pirates! Sea monsters! A f/f romance! And just a lot of badass ladies.

The world building is fabulous as usual. I really liked the introduction of the pirate alliance and expansion of the pirate world, that was a really interesting aspect. This series is very action packed, which I also really enjoyed. Skrutskie has a really good writing style which makes this a very easy and quick, fun read.

I was a massive fan of Swift and Cassandra’s relationship in The Abyss Surrounds Us and I loved the further development in this instalment. They are truly a great power couple. In The Edge of the Abyss, there was a lot of conflict in their relationship between them following the revelation in the previous book, but also due to Santa Elena showing a lot more interest in Cas and her role in potentially taking over the ship. This led to some really surprising development with Swift. We find out what really motivates her. We explore her internal conflicts, her wants and wishes, and I really loved that.

Santa Elena is also another favourite of mine. She’s intelligent, brave, fearsome, manipulative, and ruthless – she’s a true pirate queen. I’m a little disappointed in how it all ends for her. The rest of the supporting cast were also great, which came as no surprise.

Overall, though, this is a great ending to a fantastic duology. A duology that I’ll forever be recommending.

I’ll definitely be reading more from Emily Skrutskie because I love her writing – I’m especially excited her next novel Hullmetal Girls, pitched as a YA Battlestar Galactica ‘in which two girls risk everything they have for new lives as mechanically enhanced soldiers; after a rebellion against the governing body forces dark secrets to the surface, the fate of the entire fleet is left in their hands.’ HOW AWESOME DOES THAT SOUND?!?

This was the last thing you expected. This was the last thing you needed right  now. There was no way this was happening. These were the thoughts that were running through your mind as you stared down at the pregnancy that tested with positive results. This was definitely happening. You didn’t know what to do. You didn’t know if you should cry or what. A baby was the farthest thing from your mind, and you weren’t even sure how Sam would react. You never even really talked about having kids to begin with. Things in your’s and Sam’s life were about to take a drastic turn down a road you never thought you would take.

Kraken Caller (Druid Archetype)

Few things signify the terrors of the deep more than the image of massive tentacles rising over the sides of a boat and attacking the crew. The classical image of a kraken is one we’ve seen time and time again, with its own variations here and there.

Regardless of whether you prefer the old norse giant squid or the giant piscine humanoid of Clash of the Titans, wherever you find monstrous power, you’ll find those seeking to take that power for their own, whether that means controlling the monster, or becoming it yourself.

Thus, using druidic arts tied to the water and perhaps a little bit of magic stolen from the krakens themselves, some druids seek to emulate those magical and incredibly cunning squid monsters, for good or ill.

In the Golarion Setting, these druids universally worship Besmara, goddess of pirates, sea monsters, and the waves. In other settings, you might do away with this restriction or choose another appropriate deity.

Swimming comes second nature to these mystics, so they rarely risk drowning under normal circumstances. This is especially true since their lung capacity and oxygen retention becomes supernaturally high.

Just as other druids resist the magic and powers of the fey, so too do kraken callers resist the power of the beings that dwell in the depths.

The real power of this specialization, however, comes with their wild shape. Though it is limited only to aquatic creatures, these druids learn to tap into the might of krakens to take on a strange hybrid form, growing multiple tentacles to attack and befuddle foes with, not to mention climb. The more powerful they are, the more tentacles they can manifest, though if they retract several, they can improve the length or muscle mass of those limbs to better strike foes. Additionally, this form can also jettison ink underwater, filling an area with an obscuring cloud.

More powerful members can even swim swiftly and breath underwater, making them terrors of the deep in their own right.

Interested in a water-themed druid that be particularly vexing in combat? This may be what you’re looking for. Its annoying that the tentacles do not count as primary attacks, but they’re meant to supplement whatever normal attacks you have access to, so it’s not that big of deal, that and they are also useful for performing dirty tricks and other combat maneuvers, so a build with that in mind is perfect. Use spells to further control what your opponent can do, and watch as you and your allies pick them apart.

These druids can be rather nasty, but what’s more interesting is figuring out their origins. They might be devotees of a god of the sea, stealing, emulating, or even serving the tentacle horrors below. Alternately, they may view cephalopodic beings as merely another part of nature, and seek merely to emulate them the same way druid animal shamans do with other beasts.

The Cult of the Night Sea might seem, at first glace to be mad druids devoted to the bizarre abberant horrors found in the underground lakes and seas of the Deep World. However, while they do emulate such beings, they also fight against them, using their mastery of water to keep vampiric mists from escaping to the surface, and their tentacles to use unconventional tactics against the bizarre formless things in the dark waters.

Creations of a masterful kraken mage in aeons past, icthyocentaurs long ago gained their freedom from that master, spreading across the oceans. Some, however, in sinister devotion to that creator, or perhaps to arm land-dwellers against them, have taught some flesh-warping magic to more terrestrial druids, having little use for it themselves as already aquatic beings.

Puwami Coast is a craggy, cliff-laden shore, peaceful and picturesque, with a healthy population of hippogriffs. However, few approach it these days, as a tentacle humanoid has repeatedly appeared to accost visitors, lashing out and toying with them.

anonymous asked:

Can I request Saizou and Kamui going to the beach? While Saizou is out a small crab comes out and scares little asugi and kanna and they force their mom to turn into a dragon to 'protect' them. Which leads to the children rapping on her lap, please!

[I have no idea what you mean by ‘rapping’ but I’ll do my best here <3]

(Want to change the name? Use this!)

It was supposed to be a nice, peaceful day on the beach. The first time your two boys hit the ocean, in fact. While they were normally very adventurous and fun-loving, you were rather surprised by the day’s events.

It all started when Saizo abandoned you with the children. “I’ll be right back,” He said. Something about going to buy something to eat for everyone, like a right proper Papa.

“Hurry back.” You said with a sweet smile, which you were glad to see he returned thanks to the fact you managed to convince him not to wear the mask (even though he put up a serious fight).

And he was gone for roughly seven minutes before all nine of the Hell’s broke loose.

it's been a hell of a week, but here's to the weekend

Okay, guys, so I had the worst week in the history of worst weeks, but it’s the weekend now and next week is a brand new start, am I right?

Anyway, I just wanted to tell you guys that I love you very much, and I hope you have a great weekend! Stop by my ask if you want to talk because I would love to! Here’s you some fic recs in case you’re kinda bored:

  1. When the Smoke Cleared | A semi-monster hunt goes wrong and Thalia is forced to deal with a concussed Percy. Along the way, she learns a few things. Set between Sea of Monsters and Titan’s Curse.
  2. I Didn’t Need To Hear That | An accident with Aphrodite goes wrong and Percy and Annabeth can hear each other’s thoughts. Well this makes secretly being in love with your best friend awkward… (This hasn’t been updated in like three years, but it’s soooo good)
  3. The Quest For The Cestus Apple | A story where Annabeth Chase eats a mystical fruit that makes her fall madly in love with the first person she sees. Now Percy Jackson must find a cure to get his best friend back, survive another myth and discover the ambiguities of love and passion.
  4. Your Hand In Mine | Annabeth’s the girl who hardly ever loses a race, and Percy’s the new kid who doesn’t have time for track team. It’s a love story waiting to happen. AU.

  1. Matched | A match made in the Ark is put to test on the ground. (Or, where the Ark matched people up together, and Bellamy and Clarke are like the strongest match ever. Then they get to the ground.)
  2. in the silence between worlds (that’s where I’ll find you) | It’s a goddamn tragedy that both of them could be so incredibly in love with each other and yet neither could notice it.aka everyone knows Bellamy and Clarke are in love except for Bellamy and Clarke.
  3. The Punishment | (Where Bellamy takes the punishment for Finn just because he doesn’t want Clarke to watch Finn get hurt. And then he’s so wrong.)
  4. Inconceivable | "Well,“ Bellamy says dryly, "this whole diplomacy thing sure is going great.” (Or the one where they have to do it bc of grounder tradition.)
  5. Blank Canvases | “You mean to tell me that Clarke Griffin was going to get me drunk so she could take advantage of me?”—Bellamy and Clarke take part in a Grounder custom that involves body paint. Lots and lots of it.

Here’s something some of you may have never seen before: the original Hunter x Hunter pilot episode from 1998!

This stand-alone OVA was released as a part of the traveling “Jump Super Anime Tour” in 1998, and was shown alongside a pilot for One Piece! It became available for purchase on VHS later, through an exclusive mail-in offer from Weekly Shonen Jump. Animation was handled by Pierrot Studios, unlike the series produced in 1999, which was made by Nippon Animation, and as such, the art direction and vocal cast are completely different.

The pilot covers the first two chapters of the story, but takes liberties. And by liberties, I mean they fight a giant sea monster.

The setting and character design are also extremely different from what we all now know and love! It’s always interesting to see all the changes a series goes through over the years.

Happy new year everyone!

◣One could easily assume the enormous, sharklike creature was far from his normal habitat. And whoever one was, they would be correct. Bruce was the farthest from home that he had ever been in all of his Cetus years. But the concept of home was very little on his mind, currently, for one way or another the creature was lost. It had been simple enough to follow the Forest River. Simple, as it was, indeed, a very expansive river. However, never in his years had he imagined that he would have taken a separate route and diverged to the wrong outlet, his internal compass failing him and the skies cloudy enough to block the sun, and further obscure his bearings.
Thus, the titanic creature trudged along the Mirkwood Forest, the leaf litter scattering as his webbed claws kicked up the decaying matter and his talons like meathooks scraped the earth. Out of the water and his main element, Bruce’s speed appeared greatly reduced.. After all, Cetea were not referred to as ‘sea monsters’ for no reason. Luckily, his bearlike gait and appendages, and set of strong lungs allowed the sharklike creature to travel on land, for as long as he preferred.
And it appeared as though he would be doing just that, as the sound of running water had long left his ears.
A snap of twig caused the twenty-footer to halt suddenly, sharp snout pointed towards the source of the noise. A sniff of the air bestowed nothing than the decay of the leaves and the thickness of the humid fog around him. No… not entirely… He picked up something in the quiet, unsettled wind which only graced his presence for a moment every hour.
Something else was near him.
Bruce arched his back, lowering his soft, vulnerable underbelly to the ground as he crawled forward around the bend of knotted tree roots and ageless stones. As he neared the corner, the Cetus slowed to a stop as a stranger finally came into his sight, oblivious to the enormous monstrosity a few meters away.
This was no elf. Wood elf, or otherwise, it was far to short. Too beardless to be a dwarf. With the few near run-ins with orcs, Bruce could gather from scent alone that the creature was not one of them, either. Curiosity got the best of the giant sharklike being and he crept forward, round pupils in his blue beady eyes dilated with interest.
The creature was barefoot, with a head full of curly, wispy hair, and pointed ears protruding under the locks. So short in stature was the creature, Bruce was certain that he would have almost missed it had it not been for the Cetus’ incredible sense of smell and detection.
As far as sight went, the Cetus couldn’t spy any weapon on the other’s person. Granted, that didn’t make the situation completely safe, especially if the weapon was concealed, but it gave Bruce a slight ease of mind. As the creature’s back was turned towards him, the Cetus advanced forward, careful of his steps. It wasn’t until the giant sea monster was right behind him that Bruce finally voiced a greeting.
“And who might you be, lil’ morsel?” The words came out in a noise more like a growl than an actual voice. Following the greeting, the Cetus’ lips parts, displaying a myriad of serrated pearly whites, flashing with such white lethality, it was a wonder that the other wouldn’t see his own reflection in them.

@spiritofthealtaria | Starter w/ Y

If there was one thing that the Kuroneko Family would soon be learning about Y, it was that he was reckless with his health. It had only been a few days since his arrival, and he was still feeling horrible. He knew that Shugo had been visiting the real Yoshiya and giving him check-ups, and that the two of them were gradually adjusting to sharing a life. It was because of Shugo’s trips that Y knew where his alternative and Humra were.

So, what better stupid thing to do than pay them a sudden visit?

Y arrived on the boat quite impulsively. It was nighttime, and a clear night at that. He hadn’t been thinking about time differences when he came. To be fair, he wasn’t thinking straight in general thanks to this horrid state he was in.

“ I probably shouldn’t wake her up… “ He mumbled, disappointed with himself. Y took off the messenger bag that he had kind of stolen/borrowed, relieved to lose the weight of burn heals and antidotes. He had been hoping to quietly leave the bag somewhere that Humra could find in the morning, then leave without troubling her… But what he hadn’t planned on was his popularity. Not with either human on the boat, but with the sea monsters who guarded it. One second, Y was quietly setting the bag down… and then a Tentacruel was yanking him off the deck and throwing him playfully in the water.

                 Excuse his surprised scream.
