I've heard a lot of people say it's appropriative to learn Mandarin? I'm Armenian and want to learn Mandarin but after seeing so many posts online about how it's cultural appropriation I'm a little confused to be honest. Thoughts?
OH. MY. GOODNESS. I CANT BELIEVE PEOPLE STILL THINK THIS….LEARNING A LANGUAGE IS. NOT. CULTURAL. APPROPRIATION.
Repeat after me, everyone: LEARNING A LANGUAGE IS NOT CULTURAL APPROPRIATION.
OH MY GOODNESS WHERE IS THE LOGIC IN THAT EVEN??? IM CHINESE SO AM I NOT ALLOWED TO LEARN FRENCH, GERMAN, JAPANESE, OR TAGALOG BECAUSE ITS CULTURAL APPROPRIATION ?????????? (sorry i’m not frustrated at you, just at the people who say these kinds of things)
ME RIGHT NOW:
The only situation I can see where language learning can be problematic is when you have people who only learn basic phrases just to hit on girls (or guys) - in fact, I’ve encountered many people who only learn “I love you” and “I want to make love with you” in Thai and Vietnamese WHICH IS GROSS AND DEFINITELY NOT THE RIGHT MINDSET TO HAVE. But if you genuinely want to learn the language, discover the culture behind it, visit the country, understand its literature, etc., THEN IN WHAT WAY WOULD THAT BE CULTURAL APPROPRIATION?
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go study Mandarin if that’s what you really want to do. If I wanted to study Armenian, you wouldn’t consider that cultural appropriation, right? I have tons of Mandarin resources on my blog, I encourage you to go pick up a grammar book or learn some vocabulary words BECAUSE LEARNING MANDARIN AS A FOREIGNER IS NOT CULTURAL APPROPRIATION
19/08/2017 - Today I made some flashcards for Spanish and also I started learning some HTML and CSS on codeschool because it’s free this weekend and since I’ll be studying it in college (hopefully I’ll find out on Monday *internally screams*) I figured why not take advantage of that! I hope ya’ll had a nice and productive day
No, this does not excuse their actions. It could be their first time using it, but they should have guessed that posting art without the artist’s permission is wrong. It’s not a hard concept to understand at all.
Plus they have not only reposted art, but also gifs. People work their asses off on those gifs and you can’t just disrespect them and post it all so casually. They have been warned by more people too.
