This is probably my favourite bit about this episode (although i loved it all) - the fact that, not only does beach city have an underground drift racing circuit, but that the cool kids, ronaldo and the unnamed girl who works at the cinema from Lion 2 all take part
also i bet ronaldo stole that scooter from peedee.
By my reckoning, Steven creates 9independent timelines.
4 perish at the Sea Shrine, all having used the Hourglass. Each of the timelines belonging to these Stevens is now Steven-less, as none of them have returned to their original timeline.
–1 “Original” Steven (Steven Classic): dies at the Shrine after destroying the Hourglass.
–3 “Band Member” Steven: all die at the Shrine. All Stevens seen in the Steven Civil War except for the one in the hoodie can be considered offshoots of these timelines.
2 are left in timelines where they have the Hourglass, but have not used it. These Stevens have no idea about the conflict that caused the Steven Civil War, and are unlikely to have gone back to the Sea Shrine. They may in fact just take the Hourglass back to Pearl, preventing any further time travelling.
–1 “Carwash” Steven: When Original Steven goes back the second time (“I wish I could go back and stop myself from stopping my dad.”), he only takes the previous timetraveller (Band Member 2), not the Steven from that timeline.
–1 “Scooter” Steven: When Original Steven goes back to stop the band forming (“Don’t start the band Steven! It will only tear us apart!”), he is attacked by the Band Members and escapes. This timeline’s Steven is left alone and confused.
3 are left in timelines where the Hourglass is destroyed before they can touch it. It is not out of the question that any of these Stevens is the “real” one: ie the one the series currently follows. We have seen no reference to the events of this episode since.
–1 “Gem Glow” Steven: This Steven only briefly witnesses Original Steven and the Band Members poof in and then out, before barfing on the beach on Cookie Cat’s “grave.”
–1 “Rose’s Room” Steven: This Steven never sees his time-travelling doubles, as he parachutes from the quadruple bunkbed slide in the background. This Steven would have no knowledge of the Hourglass or the horrors surrounding it.
–1 “Sea Shrine” Steven (New Steven): This is most likely the Steven the series is currently following. He is wearing a hoodie in the Steven Civil War, and is the last Steven left standing. He goes on to play an awesome set with the Crystal Gems at Beach-A-Palooza.
This leaves us with an some unsettling developments:
If destroying the Hourglass erased all timelines it had travelled to, then Original Steven and Sea Shrine Steven (alongside every other Steven) collapsed into a single Steven in the Sea Shrine Timeline. Steven is more than like likely traumatised. All other timelines either do not exist, or have had their Stevens returned.
If it only destroyed timelines it had influenced, then we still have 3 timelines.
If it only destroyed timelines in which is was used, we have 5 timelines!
But if it didn’t destroy the original…
The Original Timeline (Episodes 1-22) is now Steven-less. The Gems (and Greg and everyone else) are left with nothing but a scooter and a helmet. We are left with endless tears.
The Gem Glow timeline (Episodes 1-current), the Rose’s Room Timeline (Episodes 19-current) and the Sea Shrine Timeline (Episodes 22-current) are now completely separate from the original, and all completely plausible as a “Main Timeline.”
What could this MEAN?
(p.s. The Ocean Gem timeline is factually identical to the Main Timeline (whichever one that is), as Steven did not influence anything in this trip.)
Oh man, that was a great episode! I loved how very openly they talked about consent and how awful it feels when that is violated. Steven is an open and loving little guy but he was so shaken by Kevin’s behavior towards Stevonnie in “Alone Together” he couldn’t get past it
I dunno, I feel like its such a good thing to cover, ‘cause its something a lot of kids go through. There’s a really gross feeling that lingers when someone is very pushy and violates your consent, and I feel that they were faithful to this in how uncomfortable and angry Steven and Connie still were about the incident
Another thing I liked is that even though Greg told them they shouldn’t dwell too much on Kevin or give him the time of day, its still a conclusion they needed to come to on their own. ‘cause yea, the best thing to do is not let that person continue to effect you negatively, but its hard when you’re hurt and angry. You can’t just turn it off because someone tells you its what you should do, you need to get to that place yourself, however you do that. That’s what Steven and Connie (and Stevonnie) did, they had to be angry and want revenge before they could realize it, but they came to the conclusion on their own to move on and, I dunno, its really important to me to see that
Interested in seeing they ever expand on that vision Stevonnie had, too. They had one when they were having the panic attack in “Alone Together”, which was easy to read as a metaphor, but now it definitely seems to be utilizing Steven’s gem powers (likely linked to his astral projection/possession/dream hopping abilities)
Also, the cars and the driving in this episode looked really neat (how does Stevonnie know how to drive a car though, especially a stick shift)
Also also - Jenny called Stevonnie “they”! I’m so happy about that!
Also also also, Ronaldo with his little razor scooter cracked me up
